I love Warrant (especially how they've matured) and this is my second
least favorite disc. It is VERY alternative though there are some
imaginative things going on that I wouldn't credit an alternative band
with ever doing (READ: time sig. changes, jazz chording).
But where the hell are the guitar solos!!!???!?!? I think there are 2
real solos on this disc. VERY alternative. Plus Jani Lane can't get
away from filtered mics. Would I call it a "sellout" performance? I
dunno. Songs like AYM show that there's enough of Dog Eat Dog and
Ultraphobic in this disc to see a gradual change (READ: not sudden
like Metallica during AJFA and black album metamorphasis), but it
makes you wonder.
My girlfriend asked me the other day why metal singers need to sing so
high up in the vocal range. I didn't really have a good answer for
this. I just kinda said that metal is aggressive and powerful and I
never met anyone getting a good yell out of their body in the lower
registers. Anyone else?

Unfortunately, I'm not yet blessed with a cd player in my car. Later this

My general way of dealing with CDs is perhaps a little different from other
peoples - I put music on as background almost all the time (I'm a software
engineer during the day, and I use music to block out the conversations
from all other cubicles around me so I can concentrate).
I don't know - mabey it's the fact that I wrote down exactly where the
extra tracks start at that helps. Of course, half the time, I simply stop
the CD before it plays those tracks, but hey...

A few folks have mentioned some negative thoughts on Malmsteen's attitude
and playing. I have to agree about his attitude from what I have read and
heard, but I must say that I think his playing still is awesome. Sure, he
doesn't vary his style much, but IMO, he has been putting out consistently
excellent albums since I have started to listen to him. I have probably 8 of
his albums, with the newest one in the mail now, and every song is a good
listen. The people who like his stuff expect a certain style :
neo-classical, fast, and melodic - and if he changed too much, I probably
wouldn't like him too much anymore. You have to give him credit in that he
has perfected his style and continues to please fans of his music with every
new project and gives them what they want to hear.
On the GC hidden tracks: I agree that they are extrememly annoying. To the
guy who said 'try listening to Soace in Your Face' on a car stereo : That's
for damn sure! If I want to hear thos tracks , I have to manually forward
through every empty track to get to it. I don't even waste my time anymore -
what a waste of a track if I don't get to listen to it.

Umm...if I may make a point here...We've had two threads about Marillion in
the last few weeks.
(1)The "Marillion sucks" thread. This had vritually no useful content, it
was just people bitching at the poster, then more people bitching about the
bitching, until it's all just bitchers and bitchees.
(2)The thread/post where someone actually explained what Marillion is, what
he/they liked/disliked. This thread was *very* useful. From it, I determined
that Marillion is probably not a band I would care for, as I lean more
toward heavier, more aggressive music.
Basically, posting that something "sucks" to a mailing list like this is
counter-productive. The point of this list is to provide a forum for
discussion and an exchange of ideas. Posting mindless drivel doesn't help.

To be honest, I could give a shit what others think of my musical tastes. Some people listen to music like some watch soap operas: so they'll have something talk about with their friends, not because there's anything of any redeeming value in there (although they may not know that). I don't...
Back in the 70's, I recall there being a lot less commercialism (actually almost none save the PSAs) on college radio. At the time, this is where one tended to find the kinds of songs we all complain about not hearing enough of today on the radio. Even the more commercial stations were playing more of the hard stuff. And people wanna talk about how the 70's sucked. It was a rare event for me to have to scan all my preset to find good music on the radio. I imagine there would have been quite a lot of DT of airplay had they been doing it back then (lack of influences having influenced, notwithstanding).
Now? I give the car (where I spend 90% of my time listening) radio the once over. If there's nothing there, in goes the cassette. Angelo Done Deal!

Perhaps you meant Jimi's and EVH's ranking being swapped? When Jimi did his 'stuff' for the first time, it was the first time ANYONE had, EVER. People just stared, never having been so blown away! EVH impresses me, don't get me wrong. He certanly has been innovative with some of the sounds he produces. What Jimi (and others like Les Paul, Buddy Holly) did truly changed the face!
It would be interesting to see how the survey was put together. My guess is the sample was somewhat/extremely biased :)

I'm from the Detroit area too, and it's true that Zrock did play some cool stuff in between all the crap they played. A couple months before they went off the air here there was an interview on something called "studio Z" with Mike Portnoy. There was nothing terribly interesting in the interview or I would have posted about it, but I did tape it and ended up with a nice DT studio version of Tears on tape. The guy who did the interview certainly didn't ask the questions I would have, but he didn't say anything too stupid, either. Anyway, if anyone's interested, I could tell you what's in the intervie , but like I said, it's nothing we don't already know. -Clark

Hello all, Alan Estrada Adler wanted to know the best Saigon Kick album. Well, that's a tough call. They are very different albums from one to the next. Most of my favorite songs are on The Lizard, but that's not my favorite album. If you want to e-mail me or something, I can give you further info. They've got an album due out this year, BTW. Like we'll ever see it... I think we can all agree on one thing about GFTPM Top 100. It sucks. A top 100 is just as pointless in a magazine as top tens are in here. I got The Urge when it was new and started looking then (five years ago). It's not only impossible to find new albums, but even used are hard to come by. I'll just listen to Quahogs Anyone? and imagine his older stuff. Have you ever seen him live? A-MAZ-ING!!!!!!! Dream Theater Content!!!: Was talking with a guy named Mark Terrance, guitarist for None of the Above, an NYC band NOT worth checking out. All the sam he is a great guitarist, shades of Eric Johnson. Well, he just mentions in passing conversation that he was acquainted with Mr.Petrucci in the olden days of Long Island. Seems he met John through John's wife who he was taking lessons with. Said John was a blast to hang out with, and amazing to see play up close when the band was still doing the small club circuit in NYC. Just a piece of nearly useless trivia I enjoyed. Oh, and one last thing: sucking suck sucks.

Howdy, Ytse-Ed asked about 'Tage albums to get. EOT was suggested but that has Zach singing on it. I think he meant which 'tage with Jon. As a person who has all 'tage material, I would recommend Hall of The Mountain King and then Gutter Ballet. I also like the forst album but be warned, it's different. More of a hard edge shred metal. I'm not saying that's bad, it's just different from the rest of them. Avoid the second album Fight for The Rock-boring and stale.
Over the holidays, I guess I got bored for a while and started watching Wheel of Fortune. On this episode, there was this tall hair god in a pin stripe suit. The whole time I'm thinking, "I know this guy". He introduced himself as none other than Michael Moore of Triumph. Did anyone else see this? I went right for the closed where all my vinyl is stored, found one, and sure enough there he was. He didn't win but it was cool anyway. Too bad they didn't have Vanna dance or air shred to 'Rock n Roll Machine' :>

When did you see them? Was it when they opened for Van Halen last summer? That show was filmed in Toronto and MuchMusic runs it occasionally as a Big Ticket. I no longer have this on tape, but someone else may.

Dtto on The Damnation Game! ALL of you should check these guys out if you haven't yet heard them. They are outstanding. Romeo has chops galore, the keyboard player has a few nice tandem leads and the rhythm section has a very strong resemblance to DT. The singer is a little raunchier than James, and does not have quite as high a range, but is still excellent. I have an e-mail link to the band now, so fire away if you have any questions. :) I have asked about touring. So far, there is no North American tour planned for the new record The Divine Wings of Tragedy. That may change once Zero Corporation finds out that this continent is crawling with people who are interested (hint, hint). :) Madsman, aka Chris Ptacek, has a couple of samples from the new one and all I can say is WOW!! Imagine a neo-classical DT fused with the vocals from A Night at the Opera and that pretty much covers it. Of course, Romeo's fret melting is a given. :)
IQ tends to sound quite different from one release to another. In general though, they are neo-prog and are similar to Marillion. This is particularly true of Ever, which reminds me quite a bit of Hogy Marillion (the uptempo stuff). I also have The Wake, which is a much darker record that is more reminiscent of 72-77 era Genesis or, to use a Marillion example, Grendel. I would suggest starting with Ever if you like the upbeat stuff. Otherwise go for The Wake and relive some great old Gabriel influenced Genesis.

WARNING!!!!
Those of you who remember the period when Graham Bonnet sang for Rainbow and Michael Schenker will find this guy VERY similar to Graham. If you hated his vocals (I did), I strongly advise that you listen to this disc before buying it. The vocals alone killed it for me. Instrumentally, these guys are OK, but, like most of the other allegedly DT-like bands, the songs don't measure up on the whole. That's my opinion of course. I won't go as far as to use that most hated of terms and say they "SUCK", but the album didn't inspire me to slap my cash down on the counter. :)

Seeing that some of you buy import CD's a lot, I thought I'd ask this question. I'd like to buy some stuff from a Japanese web site, but they don't yet accept credit cards.....only bank transfers or international checks. So I went to my bank to get the scoop on this, and found out that they can get me a "draft" for $20 (I guess a draft is some sort of international check) or they can wire the money for $40. This seems a bit unreasonable to me, so I was wondering if any of you know of better ways to send the funds.

Now, as much as I'd like to see Billy Sheehan in VH, it looks like that is definately not the case. I got the following from one of the VH pages:
December 29, 1996 Rumors of Michael Anthony being out of Van Halen NOT true!
Michael Anthony's brother Dennis, just called us about the rumors concerning Mike leaving the band and they are without a shadow of a doubt, 100% UNTRUE.
Dennis laughed off the rumor and found it very amusing how widespread it had become.
"Mike is on vacation in Colorado, having a total blast snowskiing. He loves his job and is very happy in Van Halen. Everything is fine."
"The band will be returning to the studio after the first of the year to continue working on the new album."
Hopefully, this will teach us a lesson about rumors because this surely isn't the last time false rumors will circulate. It's amazing how these rumors even spread, especially those that contain false details, ie, Billy playing on the last two VH albums, Gary wanting Mike out of the band, Mike being quoted in a radio station interview that he wanted to quit, etc., etc., etc.

International money order has been recommended to me by a friend. The USPS can do this, and I don't think it's that expensive.
