I don't know about some people, but I found both Men and Women's
lists to be tremendously funny. Some of the stuff on the Men's list was
just beyond laughter... my wife got a MAJOR kick out of it. :)

Folks, if that sort of humour turns you bitter, you take yourself
    FAR too seriously. :)

    Hi everyone,

It is very cool having a computer at home finally. So I can now post
all kinds of useless drivel about bands that I like and such *grin*.
Hopefully someone finds it of use....maybe.

    > I was going through the new DreamDisc catalog and was wondering
    > if anyone had any opinions on the following bands. Next to
    > each one is the description that DreamDisc gave - I'd also like
    > to know how accurate their assessment is...:

Ok, this shit is right up my alley. So here goes.....

    > Kamelot (Crimson Glory/Queensryche type)

I have their first disc "Eternity" and it sounds EXACTLY and I mean
EXACTLY like Crimson Glory. Some of the songs aren't as good as CG
but the overall sound is there. I haven't heard their new disc
"Dominion" yet but I should really get it soon I think. Hopefully
    they will tour Germany soon.

    > Psycho Drama (ala Crimson Glory/Queenryche)

These guys are good and are even on the Internet (PsycoDrama@aol.com
tell Corey that Jason sent you). Corey Brown is the singer and is
very good. Some of the songs are not all that memorable but still
overall they are better than a lot of the crap out there. Really
nothing like CG but just straight power metal like Gamma Ray maybe or
Rage (but nothing so fast as Rage). Hard for me to explain. But the
band is from Colorado and you can get the disc for $17. Try it out.

    > Heir Apparent (ala old Queensryche)

I have both of their CDs "Graceful Inheritance" and "One Small
Voice". "One..." has better written songs but they are wimpier than
the ones on "Graceful...". I don't recommend either of these very
highly. I got both mine for very cheap so I wasn't too mad. Plus I
just have to own everything *grin*.

So all in all I would go for the Kamelot first and then the Psyco
Drama and then the Heir Apparent if you have extra cash lying around.
But above all I would suggest Blind Guardian. They are my second
favorite band after DT. You can find a lot of web pages about them.
If anyone has more questions feel free to e-mail me. I am an expert
    on BG *grin*.

Zowie, looks like Rikki's back from the lurk, so here I am too.

I don't know if The Urge is out of print, but you should also keep an eye out for Stu Hamm's first solo disc, Radio Free Albemuth (the album, and a couple of the tracks, are named for Phillip K. Dick novels, although the disc is completely instrumental). I don't think he's done any solo recordings since '91's The Urge, but he of course shows up now and then on Vai and Satriani albums, among others.

This is a terrific CD, which is why it's occupied Slot 4 in my CD changer for time out of mind. (That's high-rent territory in my changer, too. :)) Someone praised the first four songs -- yes yes yes! I like every song on the CD but those four are a great beginning, and I especially like "Highland Wedding." One of the best instrumental/guitar CDs I've encountered; highly recommended.

He's a nice guy, too. He was backstage at a Blue Oyster Cult show several years back now and basically making as if he was a part of the wall -- very unassuming. BOC's Eric Bloom (who knows me) turned to me and said "Ever hear of the Dixie Dregs?" "Sure!" "That's Steve Morse." "Wow!" And Steve was totally free of that rock-star attitude. Steve's still from here (Atlanta) and he might not live too far from me. I'll go give my car a wash; ya never know..... :)

I'd say something snide and unkind to the people leaving, but why? In some cases, friends are leaving; it's too much like the last day of school.

Easy. Vocals - Gregoor van der Loo. Guitar - Scott Ian and Steve Morse. Keys - Kevin Moore (hey, he's not in the band any more! :) Bass - me. :) Drums - either Vinnie Paul from Pantera or the guy from Altura (cause he wants to so bad, and maybe if he got the chance to, Altura's next album wouldn't suck so hard. :)

I never meant any disrespect to Tull. Just thought it odd that they beat out "...AJFA" with a five-year-old album.

BTW, Tull fans ought to pick up Magna Carta's tribute, "A Collection of Tull Tales." Derek S, Still (nee echolyn), Robert Berry, and other notables such as Keith Emerson do much justice to the old standards, while injecting their own adaptations and feelings into it. Drawback - Magellan's "Aqualung" sounds like it was recorded in a bathtub by a couple of 16 year olds who decided to play with every toy in the studio.

I firmly believe that High Tension Wires is an absolute MUST in ANYONE'S cd collection. It's domestic, and sometimes you can even spot it as a "Price Buster". Go out and buy this album from one of John Petrucci's main influences... you will marvel at the arrangements, technique, taste and sheer compositional power of the music. NOT Heavy Metal... but EVERYONE I know including MANY MANY MANY Death Metal and Black Metal fans LOVE This album. --------------------------------- >He also made a >pretty nasty comment to Eddie in between interviews backstage, something to >the tune of: "Enough about your hip, motherfucker, this night is about ME!" Allegedly. And this accounting has been made only by VH fans, as far as I've heard. I've never read the interview or seen or heard footage of Eddie recounting this, though it may indeed have occurred.

    >Incidentally, if Eddie and the boys were the publicity-seeking assholes that >many have tried to make them out to be, then they would have toured with Roth >and made the countless millions that were waved in front of their faces.

They don't need the money. They may just find (in saying THEY I refer to EVH and spouse) the attention fun.

    >VH is not a >nostalgia act (like Kiss),

Go ahead and insult Kiss and their fans. >I'm sick of hearing uninformed people make blanket comments about this >situation.

How do YOU gauge who's informed and who isn't? How do you have any idea what other information we might have? And what veil of ignorance causes you to believe that a VH Mailing List would be an unbiased forum for discussion? That is an area where you'll find mainly VH support. Of course their going to accept Eddie Van Halen's word as gospel. I personally do not.

    >some of the recent mudslinging has been ugly, admittedly. There are still >many matters for debate, and many assumptions that >can only be made on the basis of opinion.

Including yours. In any situation where the parties involved disagree and you weren't there to witness the event, you can't claim that what you speak is fact.

    >However, why would Eddie lie about >this? What does he have to gain?

There's an obvious PR angle to be seen as to why EVH would lie. His fans don't like being jerked around. He may just have needed to save some face. Van Halen needs the image they have, or the albums wouldn't sell. The market isn't there for their type of music without their good names. I have a few other theories. Eddie's fucking OBSCENE ego may have prevented him from letting Dave take the spotlight again. Eddie has always been an attention hound, and with Sammy, for a long time he ran the show completely. Strange how as soon as Sammy started to put his foot down Eddie fired his ass out the door... The other common theory is that Eddie's wife made the decision because she's historically HATED DLR since she met him. I bet it's a combination of both. But that's just my opinion, and until you posted this VH defense, I'd not said word one about my particular theories on the jam. Now when I'm through with making my point, I will not address this issue here again, as it DOESN'T BELONG on the jam. I just can't stand to see a one sided argument. If you've any interest in continuing it, you'll e-mail me privately.

    >The bottom line is that >Eddie's going to do what HE thinks is best for the band and himself as a >musician.

Yes. Indeed. Like his cocaine and alcohol addictions. Wise career moves for himself and his band.

    >As always, he's saying "just shut the fuck up and listen to the >MUSIC." Say what you want about EVH, but there has scarcely been a musician >who is more purely and wholeheartedly devoted to the art of creating music.

How you can say that just infuriates me. I am willing to bet we have members of the Jam here that put more hours of blood, sweat and tears into music than Eddie Van Halen. When we saw him at the preshow party before the Jason Becker Benefit, it looked like he spent a hell of a lot more time tanning, getting his makup done and shopping for his outfits than practing and writing. There are literally MILLIONS of musicians out there. How you can say that there are few as dedicated as EVH just astounds me. There are scarcely any musicians out there with the money, power and promotion that EVH possesses, but in a 20 mile radius of my home there are probably 20-30 musicians that put more effort and soul into music. Eddie's making no sacrifices for his music. He's soaking the angle that works for the cash. Where's the last solo he did that was anything NEAR what he used to do back with DLR? He's playing for the money and the attention. Not the music. That's just my opinion though.

    >I >think on this list that we can all agree that any other approach to making >music smacks of selling out.

VH's music smacks of a lot of things. Selling out might fit in there.

    >The sad thing is that there are many VH fans who >think Eddie OWES them something, and that he should listen to their blubbering >complaints about what to do with the band. Oh >yeah, and there's no way there would ever be a Van Halen without Mikey.

If I buy a VH album, VH OWES me a quality piece of merchandise. If I find it to be otherwise, I am absolutely going to let everyone that might buy the album know, because with bands like VH, you're not going to see many bad reviews (though you may just hear some repetetive cheesy music). > Oh >yeah, and there's no way there would ever be a Van Halen without Mikey.

ROFLMAO Umm... were you deaf when David Lee Roth parted ways with the band? How about when Sammy left? You can replace a bassist like Michael Anthony. He doesn't have a memorable signature sound. It's quite a different story with a vocalist. When DLR left, people thought it was the end. And to many fans it was. Sammy appealed to a younger crowd... they basically did the impossible to survive. They may do it again, but the kids aren't going to get into it as much, I bet. That music is not "in". And many of the longtime VH fans (myself included) are sick of the soap opera. ------------------------------- >The rumor about Billy Sheehan and VH started because Eddie did a benefit for >ALS in Chicago and the Band Eddie had was called Lou Brutus or something >like that and the bass player for the set was Billy Sheehan.

Actually, it's been said that they were considering Billy way back when Talas toured with VH. Now it's being said that MA is not happy with the new direction of the band and is considering leaving.

I was at that Benefit concert. Great show until all the asshole VH fans started ruining performers sets by screaming "EDD-IE EDD-IE" I heard one person say "Screw Jason, let's see some Van Halen!!!" Great people those VH fans. Lou Brutus is a DJ on a local radio station. There was no band name to my knowledge. I left just before they played (because I've lost all respect for Billy, Eddie, and Steve Lukather... though I'm sure Rod Morgenstein kicked ass). --------------------------------- >"Ah, let's end this charade.
