Cliff Totten, man, you really hit the nail on the head in your praise of
"Perspective". Dream Theater is my #1 band, but "Perspective" is the most
beautiful CD I know. Technically gifted musicians, and compositions that really
bring out the deepest emotions easily. The one thing about it is that I can't
listen to it too often, because it affects me very much emotionally. I don't
have that with any other album to such extent, not even other music that makes
me think of girl's I've broken up with...really weird, really intense...and
definitely a must-have for anyone who likes good music ;-)

I was a bit disappointed in Artension. The press said it was great, and very prog and DT-like, but in fact I am not satisfied about the guitar work. The keyboards are fine, but then it's almost a solo project of the keyboard player, really.

Just want to clear something up. There has been a wee bit of confusion regarding something said/typed by yours truly. In jest, I said "mentioned" that I had DAT'ed the Birch Hill show. A lie. A revision of truth. My heartiest (tougher than "heartfelt") apologies if anyone's hopes were upped for nought.

On another related note, if somebody *did* tape the show, it would not be the best idea in the world (or even a decent idea for that matter) to release that show now, seeing as how DT's management are real wary-like at this juncture. Any sane bootlegger would wait until after the new album (do we have a title yet?) comes out. Or, at least, that's what I'd do if I were a bootlegger. Which, I guess I am, since I DAT'ed the Birch Hill show...

    KIDDING!! Geez!

There was some discussion of the "Supernatural Fairy Tales" boxed set a week or so back. I just got this a couple o' days ago, so let me give you a brief (and I mean brief) "review":

    Buy this boxed set if...

    (1) ...you love progrock and are not familiar with barely anything. This is the reason I bought it. Sort of like a big, more permanent, mix tape. The only "featured artists" I knew before purchase were/are ELP and Yes. It was this boxed set that has shown me that Genesis did, at one time, not-suck. They were actually good at one time! All in my opinion of course (flame if you dare)... And now I can tell you what Magma and Gentle Giant and a horde of others sound like. Fave so far: Focus. Who'd of dreamed up combining yodeling and prog? (2) ...you're a collector, familiar with all or most of the material, and a completist. (3) ...you want a bunch of *great* CDs to listen to in the car, especially with non-progsters in the car. "Isn't there anything *else* on this CD/tape?" A standard complaint, I'd surmise.

Does it remind, at least partly, his solo piece "Midnight Express" off "Waiting For The Punchline"? It was bluesy, raw and extremely cool, let alone played technically flawlessly.

"...Punchline" has to be my fave Extreme album, though it did take much time to get used to.

Hmm... Whereas I might just agree with you on "Ya-Yo Gakk", I also might throw "Juice" in the same bucket. It's too Satriani-esque.

It's too much to say it lacked good songwriting. It does have "Die To Live", "The Boy From Seattle", "Kill The Guy With The Ball (The God Eaters)" and *especially* "Tender Surrender" on it. Some of it I consider even better than some of Fire Garden. Overall, it rocks. Even my least favorites "Juice" and "Ya-Yo Gakk" fit in somehow. Add Deen Castronovo...

Is it just me or does "The Boy From Seattle" really sound something like Hendrix?

That's how I get my kicks.

I noticed a few posts lately about christian bands and the good music they often make regardless of the music's message. I would like to LOUDLY agree and to say that anyone out there who is passing over certian bands based soley on their christian label is being foolish. Some of the very best music I've heard is from the christian sector. Not only are there the bands on major labels that we all dicuss routinely (Galactic Cowboys, King's X, ect.), but there are many lesser known bands that are just as good. However, they majority of these bands are on independent or christian labels only (Tourniquet, Masquerade, Resurrection Band, Believer, Precious Death, The 77's, Tamplin, Bride, ect to infinity...). Check some of these out, you may just like what you hear. Remember listen to THE MUSIC first and form your opinion afterwards. Okay, stepping down of the soap box now.....enjoy.... ~Matt

    Time: currently about 23:00 EST

At this time last week, I was repairing a tire in a Superfresh parking lot in the rain in New Jersey. Whoever invented the system for changing the tires of Dodge Caravans needs to be drug out in the street and shot. The spare is located *under* the car, and can only be unattached with the aid of the jack handle, the jack being stowed in the hood, screwed tight to the side with some sort of child-proof lock. Ridiculous!

That 45-minute ordeal (gimme a break - I'm not mechanically inclined!) left my pal Toby and I filth(ier than usual)y and more bad-tempered than before. The following events didn't help matters either. Those events being trying to find Birch Hill. Damn sneaky club -- where was it? The directions we had said to travel south on Rt. 9. They didn't mention that Birch Hill is not *directly* on the highway. We were thrown for a loop, getting hopelessly lost in a matter of minutes (gimme a break - I'm not navigationally inclined!). As if searching for a higher answer, we looked to the sky. And saw searchlights. "Let's follow 'em," Toby suggested. "We're already fucked." And so, like a village simpleton chasing after the will-o-the-wisp, blindly let a bunch of lights in the sky guide me through a mess of back streets. Where I found an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a BIRCH HILL!!! The dumbest strategy in the world, and it worked!!! Who'd've thunk it?

Several high-fives and hillbilly-whoops later, I was paying some cad $2 to park in a mudpuddle. I'm cool with that, sure-fine. Then we lept out of the car and raced to the club to stand in line. The wrong line. "Um, Tobe, that sign says Baysharks [or something close to that - you know, that rave bar or whatever]... I don't think this is Birch Hill." It was at this point that I made out the opening strains of "The Killing Hand" filtering in from next door. Curses abound, and we ran for the *right* door. "Maybe the opener is a cover band... A cover band that has James LaBrie on vox!? Shit!"

Luckily for me, we weren't carded, though those signs on the door ("All Ages/Under 21 To Drink tickets will be refunded") unnerved me. Seeing as how both of us were/are 17. i/we then made the mistake of bumping into a bouncer, did we not my rings? (David Brin rules!) Luckily he either didn't care or didn't notice through all that muscle (gimme a break - I'm not muscularly inclined!).

We missed the openers, we missed the first several songs, but we were content. Until we ran into the back of the "wall" of humanity. Geez. At least I'm tall. Toby, on the other hand, was not so lucky. Better him than me! Oh... But, uh, were there any other 'Jammers standing right in front of the stairs? I didn't ask. Any of you look *just* like Slash (w/o the hat)? Any of you *huge* (at least 6'6" and 250 lb standing about 5 feet (20 rows of sardines, er, people) in front of me) How about the guy that had his expansive stomach smashed into my back for 20 minutes? I was the tall long-hair wearing black.

Talk about idiots, there were quite a bit of 'em at Birch Hill. And 75&% of 'em were females (suiting up flame-hood). I realize people may trying to convert their girlfriends by bringing 'em to a concert, but, geez, couldn't you find a cheaper place to make out? There was this one chick <ducking> who, honest to God, walked in and out of the concert, smashing her way through the mass *THREE TIMES*!!! She wasn't the only one doing this moronic practice either. Aye-aye-aye...

And then there were the drunkards. Take Johnny-Chugalug there, who *punched* Toby in the face accidentally as he spun around in a daze. Johnny, who tried to apologize by putting his arm around Tobot's neck and slurring "Sorrry, buddy... Didn't mean 'ter..." The same guy who, when he gave up on apologizing stumbled off, smashing me into the guys in front of me (apologies to those folk if they're on here - it wasn't my fault!). Or, take the two tanked guys in the "parking lot" who narrowly escaped being crushed beneath the grinding wheels of my Revolution, er, Caravan. Who in their right mind would try to cross a street no more than a foot in front of a moving car?!

All this complaining... I haven't once mentioned anything *good* about the concert. How about this? IT FUCKIN' RULED!!! DT was amazing, well beyond what I had expected (first timer). "Caught in Alice's 9-Inch Tool Garden" blew me away. New songs with vocal harmonies! Weee -- I'm bustin' a gut for the album! Maybe two guts even -- who knows?

In other news, my window didn't place for the second year in a row in the Avon Grove High School Annual Holiday Window Painting Contest. Apparently, poorly-drawn 101 Dalmatians and Precious Moments nativity scenes (children with huge heads and "droopy-eye") are *better* than KILLER ROBOTS. Maybe I should give up...

Hello, First off: Does anyone own the *Spirit of Radiostar* Rush boot? I saw it at a local store and was tempted to buy, but it's not on the NMS List of Boots. Anyone? Private mail please. To the guy who wrote this... >>As exhilirating as self-appointed street-sweeping (or "zamboni-patrol" >>depending on where you're from) is, seeing someone else do this never >>fails to remind me what a truly evil man I am.

Try commuting through the campus of Rutgers College, where on the main road, College Avenue, no one has any concept of a crosswalk. I can't count the number of times I've wanted to drop it into gear and spread brains on my windshield. Does that make me evil? Nah! Add imbecile pedestrians to jughandles as a reason to steer clear of driving in Jersey. Some people have no clue... Neat trick: when waiting for idiots to cross against the light, which is of course green for you, drop your car into neutral and rev the engine (or just hold in the clutch, for us manual shifters). I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who pick up the pace fearing their demise. Or maybe it was Dave Mustaine blasting from my car that scared them... A dream of mine is to buy a car completely made of steel, or build it myself. I would then humble all of the fiberglass conveyance driving Jersey morons by crippling their fragile vehicles. Ahhhh... the sound of crunching plastic as that Lexus driving bastard gets his due for not using a directional when changing lanes...

HUH? Oh, shoot... Did I waste your bandwidth? *drops into gear*

    Howdly Doodly Doo Jammers,

Here's my .02 about what Phil said: >Why do *I* love the 'Jam so much? Because I've found out about so much cool >music from listening to your jabber! :) :)

    >Here's a partial list: Superior, Lemur Voice, Savatage, Fates Warning, >Angra, Stratovarius, Waltari, Nevermore, Spock's Beard, Artension, Eldritch, >Helstar, Iced Earth...the list goes on and on. Plus several solo artists or >individuals who happen to be particularly talented at their instrument.

    >Thanks to all who put their musical thoughts here, especially if they're >detailed. Keep 'em coming, folks!

Phil, I agree with you 100%, and I also have found a TON of new music in the past couple months by reading the jam and looking up bands. The bands I have discovered in some way from the jam: Altura, Artension, Crimson Glory, Shadow Gallery, Galactic Cowboys, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Angra, James Byrd Group, TSO, Steve Morse Band, Enchant, Jason Becker, Lemur Voice, etc...My list also goes on.

I have bought more CD's in the past 2 months because of the jam than I have in the past 2 years simply because of the amount of good info I get from here. Sounds worthwhile to me!

Anyways, as far as the off-topic content goes, BIG DEAL! It is all free and frankly, how tough is it to scroll through unimportant posts? (Like this one possibly). Personally, I think if we just talked about DT all the time, then the list would actually be less interesting than it is now. As Phil said, Thanks to all for the musical info and keep it coming! Have a good day folks.

I got to talk to Mike at NAMM on Friday. I'm sure this isn't news to some of you, but in case you didn't know, they are waiting for the label to put out the next album. They are more than finished with their part. Mike said they have enough material recorded to put out three cds. It doesn't look like there will be a double disc because he is the only one in the band that actually wants to do it. He was there signing autographs (for Tama) along with John Myung for Yamaha and Derek was there too but I didn't know of him doing any autograph sessions. None of them did any playing, but plenty of browsing. John and Mike were both at attendance at the Billy Sheehan clinic and John went to a Tony Levin show on Sat. night. Want to hear any other details about NAMM such as Nuno Bettancourt's performance, e-mail me privately.

Hello, My guitar is in desperate need of refretting and maybe even a new tremolo system. Does anyone out there have any info on a respectable mail order guitar parts chain? I remember seeing Warlock ads in old guitar mags, are they still around? Also, if you know a place in Central Jersey (besides Sam Ash, their selection is unreliable), that would be great. Then my next question: My friend was saying I should just file down the frets, even them out again. Is this a good idea? The guitar is four years old, never refretted, I think it needs it. Oh, I don't know... It's a Washburn by the way. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    Andrew

Hey... no way... I won't tolerate this!!!!! Ray Alder flubs the live stuff so much more.... no way!!! LaBrie has to be in my Golden triad of singers, along with Tate and Kiske. I have the impression that LaBrie is the one who tends to mock up at shows more than the other two, however I think this must have been because his voice was in a bad condition for quite some time... and even up until the recording of Awake... I am sure he is capable of doing the whole Awake album a lot better, as I am sure that his poorer performances were just because he was going through a bad phase. Ray Alder I like, but his live stuff honsetly I can't stand. As far as I know, Alder makes a serious mess of things at shows, however I could be wrong, and all of the above is IMHO... ok? I just got irritated of this JL bashing like some others have on the jam... well that's all! :) this isn't meant as a flame! Jam ON!!! :)
