Woo! Spock's Beard/Mastermind is a would be a good double show.

I have Volume I, III, and IV is on the way. Volume I was made in '87 and it
has some good rocking songs. They have an ELP sound on the first one. This
is due to Bill Berends using midi-patches on his guitar. The first volume
is reminicent of ELP but with a hard rock sound. The dummer is really good.
He uses the snare a lot. Overall, they produce a hi-octane prog rock with a
lot of great melodies and some good jams. One song "Tiding of the Battle"
really evokes that feeling and sounds very DT-like in terms of chops and
    progressions.

Volume III is more mature work and moves away from the ELP sound. Music is
    fairly complex and melodic.

I don't think that the singing is bad. It doesn't take away from the music.
Actually, Bill's voice sounds like Brett Kull's voice of echolyn.

    >During the show, they played "Ride of the Valkyries" and "William

Yes! Classical tunes in hard-rock style. Awesome.

I was surprised to read on the 'Jam recently that ZEBRA was still
around, releasing albums in only selected cities.

Is this the same ZEBRA from the 80's? Randy Jackson, Guy Gelso, and
    Felix Hanemann?

ZEBRA and SAMMY HAGAR played at the first arena concert I ever went to,
in 1985 (at the Civic Center in Rapid City, SD). It was a fantastic
show. It was Mardi Gras time, and fans were throwing pearls on stage
(some sort of Mardi Gras tradition, as ZEBRA originally hailed from New
    Orleans)

ZEBRA's debut album came out in 1983, when I was a senior in HS (that
should date me...). It just blew me away. They had a unique sound, and
Randy Jackson's vocals were very different than anything else I heard
(reminded me of Jon Anderson of YES). When I first heard DT, I harkened
    back to ZEBRA's debut.

Subsequent albums were disappointing. Their live CD from 1990 was
    great.
    Update anyone?

    Hello,

Well it's me posting once again. First I would like to clear up the
coment on Chester Thompson, the one I am refering to is Santana's
current keyboard player. He is seen in the hammond organ and SY-99,
during Santana's live video, just in case you're wondering (D-Man).
Now, about those keyboard videos; I haven't received any replies, why?
Am I the only keyboardist in this list? I sure hope not. Please help
me out on this one, I am searching for something that will help me
develop my soloing. I would like to find something in the progressive
type playing. Any suggestions are welcome.

DEREK SHERINIAN: Just in case you're reading this, I want you to know
that we want you to make an instructional video PLEASE!!!!! You are an
    INCREDIBLE keyboardist!!!

    Hello Jammers,

just to address a couple of points on the five or so jams that come every day.

Jan Hammer ---------- The keyboardist for Mahavishnu Orchestra in my world. Probably his best work, check it out if you are into jazz fusion or want to try some technically incredible music at low prices (these are generally available cheap, they are on a major label). Try "Birds of Fire" or "An Inner Mounting Flame" for starters.

Mastermind ---------- Mastermind was brought up in the last jam. I saw them again over the weekend and Bill Berends is truly one of the fastest guitar players I have ever seen. He plays MIDI guitar as well as electric and acoustic. They have four albums each with the trademark Berends guitar and bombastic drums of Rich Berends. "Volume One" reminds the listener of ELP except all of the keyboard is really guitar synth. "Brainstorm" is full frontal assault of guitar. A couple of long tracks with reoccuring themes and a couple of covers "William Tell Overture" and "Ride of the Valkyries" are mixed with some shorter Bill Berend's originals. "Tragic Symphony", the third album is a bit more mellow, a couple of softer pieces and some acoustic guitar is added, less MIDI. The singing gets much better on this one. "Until Eternity" moves in the direction of fusion jazz and gives the impression of Mahavishnu Orchestra at times. The best Mastermind album IMO. Most stores should be able to order the last two disks from Dutch East India's Prozone label if you are interested. A remastered version of Volume One came out recently, I think Brainstorm is currently out of print. Contact Bill Berends at bberends@mosquito.com if you have any questions. He will get to them when he gets back from his Japanese tour. Or you can get to his WWW site through my Unsigned Bands page.

DT- B-sides ----------- If the band has written as much music as quoted on the jam, then we better hope the album does well and we get lots of singles filled with B-side tracks, either that or an EP may be in order after this album. Actually it might make sense to do an initial tour and then after a few months cut an EP with a redone or live version of the most radio friendly song off of the new disk, and then market it to the new fans. Who knows?

    Later,

    Mike

I'm sorry, but I've seen DT many, many times (at least 5 or 6) being that I live on Long Island and La Brie was GREAT early on but began to screech out the highs and just didn't cut it live. Don't get me wrong, he IS an awesome singer, but there so many other bands I've seen live that the singers were just amazingly dead on! When I saw Fates Warning for Inside Out, Ray Alder blew me away..so crisp and clean. Warrel Dane and NEVERMORE had my mouth on the floor when I was blessed to see them open for DEATH before Century Media pulled the funding out from under them. At this point, I've seen DT so many times and am disappointed that the new material isn't as remarkable as the glorious WDADU and I&W that I'd much rather see ANGRA, GAMMA RAY, BLIND GUARDIAN, LABYRINTH, SYMPHONY X (and these guys live in New Jersey damnit!!!!!), hell...any European band that will grace our shores once again..ELDRITCH anyone???

I have the impression that LaBrie is the one > who tends to mock up at shows more than the other two, however I think > this must have been because his voice was in a bad condition for quite > some time... and even up until the recording of Awake... I am sure he is > capable of doing the whole Awake album a lot better, as I am sure that his > poorer performances were just because he was going through a bad phase.

Maybe so, but the last 3 or 4 times I've seen them LaBrie didn't hit the highs cleanly. I can understand if he has a bad phase here and there, but it is just too noticeable for me.

    > Ray Alder I like, but his live stuff honsetly I can't stand. As far as I > know, Alder makes a serious mess of things at shows, however I could be > wrong, and all of the above is IMHO... ok?

I'm not sure which shows you saw..I saw them twice for Inside Out and he was mesmerizing. Hit every note and had excellent phrasing. I have bootlegs from No Exit where he was obviously drunk and his highs were ear-shattering and inappropriate, but he has since matured and is an amazing live singer...made a mess of NOTHING as far as I'm concerned..of course all in IMHO too ok.

I just got irritated of this JL > bashing like some others have on the jam... well that's all! :) this isn't > meant as a flame! > Jam ON!!! :)

I don't know why you guys think I'm bashing the poor guy..I'm just saying there are MANY other singers I'd prefer to hear rather than LaBrie thats all..to each his own. The 'Jam has been a pretty open forum as far as discussing other bands, DT are GREAT , but at this moment there is such an abundance of great music and bands, that I prefer bands like HELSTAR (in their prime at least), ELDRITCH, ANGRA, SYMPHONY X, etc.... instead of "Awake". It seems that some place DT on way too high a pedestal..just an opinion. Its not like I'm saying LaBrie completely sucks man!! Because I know he obviously doesn't (his stuf on the RUSH Tribute is excellent). Look...they all have their merits...I prefer my own little triad to yours..so it goes.

*** You know what I was just reminded of as I wrote that last line? Anyone remember the TriForce from the Legend of Zelda?? Gotta admit that game ruled (Parts I and II) as well as Castlevania and Metroid..had to kill Gannon with a silver arrow if I remember correctly?

*** Also, Tombraider for Playstation is one fucking AMAZING game..in fact, game is too simplistic a word..the music is just KILLER!>!>>???!!!! Gotta give credit to the composers...This is stuff I would expect on a STATOVARIUS album or something!!

anyhow....I think this is the most I've posted in a year....

cheers, Carlo (aka Fates, aka YtseSatan)

    Hey Jammerz!!!

This is major DTC for me! I have yet to see DT live other than the Images and Words, Live in Tokyo vid, so a friend of mine in the music industry felt sorry for me. Last year he went to the NAMM show and got and autographed pic of His Highness, John Petrucci, for me, signed to me:

"To Nick, John Petrucci" in blue indelible marker. JP is evidently a bit less adept with a marker than a guitar, because he even got his fingerprints on the pic in the blue ink.

A year went past, and Shahab, the friend mentioned above, had yet to even tell me of the picture (because he lost it.). Well last week, he coughed it up and smiled and said "Don't ever say I never do anything for you."

The pic is of JP standing w/ JPM100 model #1, wearing his "DESTROY" motorcycle jacket. It's now framed, pending my making a dozen million photocopies and wallpapering my room.

My brother got these toys for Christmas called "Beast Wars". Your typical Transformers rip-off (very blatant too -- gorillabot is named "Optimus Primate"). Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there another series of toys also by the name of "Beast Wars" several years ago? They were little rubbery action figures standing maybe half the height of a G.I. Joe, and had animal heads. I've got one somewhere, a tapirman missing its arms, but no box/wrapping to check the product "name". Anyone care to shed some light on this conundrum?

    Hi.

Someone said Masquerade is a Christian band? ummm..not the one on Metal Blade. They seem to me as though they are definitely NOT Christian...i may be wrong but....not that it matters but I don't want anyone buying it and thinking it's Christian.

Speaking of Christian bands though, I think I remember a band called Holy Soldier that was nifty. I heard they have a new CD but with a new, crappy singer and the old singer, Stephen Patrick has a solo disc. I've been meaning to check it out.

I got the Victor CD i asked about. Hmmmmmmmmm.....odd....yep, it's NOT rush. I don't know about it yet. Alex must have some pent-up rage inside of him.

I also got Helloween "The Best - the rest - the rare". Pretty cool... Michael Kiske is a terrific singer and has definite Geoff Tate sound. The guitars are also neat.

While in the CD shop, I saw a bunch of stuff that shocked the snarg out of me, including: -not one but TWO DIFFERENT HELSTAR cds - I have heard a song or two from these guys. Any opinions? - Mayadome - anyone? Big sticker saying something like "PROGRESSIVE METAL QUINTET". I didn't want to spend any more money today. I got the Artension a few weeks back and while the guys were certainly good, and the Keyboard dude likes to play, the lyrics suck and for some reason it's just not in the CD rotation...i don't know..maybe it will grow on me.

    MIDNIGHT COME BACK!!!!!!! MIDNIGHT RULES!!!!!!!!!

    sorry about that.

Sorry about the 0% DT content. oh well, we are ALL waiting. In this area, I certainly spread the word around work about DT. Heck, I am already telling people to go the record stores April 22 for the new fates warning (although maybe i shouldn't do that because last time I did that someone took my advice and bought the CD i was promoting and I had to SEARCH for it but i still got it..hey look i can ramble.)

one last thing to end this, my largest post, someone mentioned Mr. So&So, would you please send me a description on their CD? And one other band I've heard good things about - Opeth (a black metal band?)

    bye

    Phillip
