Are you serious? Neal Schon? I mean I liked Journey when I was in high
school but, really? I guess I have heard just about everything he has
released and my feeling is he is a perfect example of an average guitar
player becoming a huge star. Mostly pentatonic, not very exciting. His
fast passages are extremely sloppy. Can you honestly compare anything he
has written to Learning to Live, A Change of Seasons, Metropolis, etc.? I
    sure can't.

I might believe Rothery but Schon......no way!!!

I was just thinking that earlier. Reading about all those guitarists and
not one mention of Neal Schon. One of the best guitarists os his era. And
his era's been going for almost 30 years. I hear he's got a new solo album
coming out. I can't wait. :) Beyond the Thunder was just a real nice,
non-showy, groovin album with lotsa spirit.

Rothery's another badass who rarely gets mentioned. He's another guitarist
who's not all showy like the shredders that get listed, but I think I like
that more out of a guitar player. Sorta like Alez Lifeson. They play
important roles, and don't get carried away with them.

    Kinda not shredding...

Jeez, 7 jams in one day! And I wouldn't doubt it if the 8th ones waiting to
jump into my mailbox. I bet if we took out all of D and Adam's posts, we'd
    probably have 2 or 3. :)

: Awww, Ernie, you should know this better, don't you? :)) If I

Well, Bernd, you should know better than anyone that your band's name
tempts ppl to make dumb, pointless jokes.:)

    :> Superior - Behind
    :
: That title always makes me think of an awesomely cute ass. :-)

    see what I mean? ;)

Bad mood songs.... well, Fade to Black used to do the trick, but it's lost
it's edge after so many listens. When I'm angry-depressed, Pantera's TGSTK
seems to do the trick. When i'm just feeling doen, QR's 'Someone else' off
of PL fits quite well... that song is so DEEP. THen I like listening to
all of Awake when I'm frustrated.

Of course now adays, it's all been replaced by Tool. A song like 'H.' or
'jimmy' can really hit you emotianlly hard. And whenever you have one of
those 'fuck everybody, society sucks' days, 'Aenema' is just perfect.

    Regarding his post on 7/8/97...

You mentioned Michael Lee Firkins in there along with Jason Becker...

I just wanted to mention that MLF does play one of the songs on Jason's
newest cd, Perspective. On "End of the Beginning". And he did a great
job! :) He really did get Jason's guitar sound and feel very well.

If you like the guy, check out the cd. Hey, you won't be disappointed
    anyhow, it's Jason's! :)

    Take care all,

I'll admit right off the bat that I'm not a huge Rush fan, but I enjoy a lot of
their stuff, especially the 80's albums. My question for all you Rush/prog
fanatics is this: am I the only one who finds "2112" to be an absolutely boring,
obnoxious, insufferable piece of work? No flames, please, I'm not disrespecting
anyone's opinion, if you like it that's cool. I'm just wondering if anyone else
    feels the same.

Well, to be honest, I am a HUGE Rush fanatic, but I won't take your comment
    personally.....

Anyway, I always leaned more towards Rush's work from Permanent Waves to
present....I own Chronicles and never really cared for too much of the
70's stuff.....but then I decided to buy FLY BY NIGHT and 2112 just for
the sake of owning 70's Rush music....well, FBN never really grew on me,
except for Anthem which is great. In the beginning, 2112 was to me what
it is to you...long and boring...then, I just listened...over and over..
I downloaded the lyrics and memorized them like I do the rest of their stuff.
Then....I just worshiped the song....and it's been that way since. I
think you really need to listen to it for a while and it will grow on you.
I think that if you are not open minded to a 20:38 song, then of course
you will hate it. But if given the chance, the whole album will grow on
you. I love every song on 2112......who knew? So, I have opened up to the
70's stuff a little more. From their entire collection, I am missing only
5 albums all hailing from the 70's....Rush fanatics, try to figure the
    titles out ;)

But, I wish I didn't bother getting Presto....IMO, that album sucks.
Excuse me, 2 good songs (The Pass, Available Light) are good and the
rest put me to sleep....it's just boring stuff....kind of like hearing
    some soft rock crap.....oh well....

Anyway, that's my opinion.....2112 rocks, nuff said.

Rupert Hine........shitty influence, enough said....Even though RTB is
a pretty good album, man, they just fucked up on Presto....I don't know
what the hell they were thinking on that one. Counterparts hails as one
of my favorite, Animate/Leave That Thing Alone/Cold Fire are the tracks
played over and over, but the rest are good as well, the whole album rocks.
But I must say that Hold Your Fire IS a good album, one of my favorite.
The songs really are good and meaningful, IMHO, the lyrics and music
are some of the best in challenging the Lyric/Music "marriage" found
in music. Today's Alternacrap just seems to keep ending up in a divorce :P
Sorry, I forgot the IMHO with that one ;)

Have a listen to his last solo album 'Beyond The Thunder' after all KorgX3

I wasn't comparing Schon to Petrucci either, I just had a thought of two
terrific guitarists who I admire for their playing and songwriting.
What was the last time you heard Schon play, on 'Infinity' or something
    else that old ?

Salutations from the management and staff of Ytse-Survey II (me):

Wow! The day after I last posted info about the survey, I received 25
entries at once! Good job, guys! I was getting a little worried there
for a second. We have almost reached 50 entries, well on our way to the
goal of 150. For those of you who haven't yet, e-mail me at
    syoung@phnx.uswest.net with your 10 favorite 'non-Dream Theater'
    bands/artists -- Entries will be accepted until 11:59 p.m., July 31st;
at that point, the entries will be compiled and a Ytse-Survey II
    champion crowned.

Current statistics are as follows (as of 7/8/97):

    Number of entries: 48
Number of different bands/artists mentioned: 184

Current Survey Top 10 (with number of entries):
    1) Rush (27)
    2) Queensryche (26)
    3) Fates Warning (17)
       Savatage
    5) Iron Maiden (12)
       Metallica
    7) Angra (11)
       Steve Vai
    9) Megadeth (9)
       Yes

Surprise, surprise -- Early on, it appears that defending-champ QR and
Rush are going to battle for 1st Place for the second straight survey.
Savatage and FW were always popular, as well. Iron Maiden is quite a
dark horse, so far. And Angra came out of nowhere. Yes was a strong
    contender last year, also.

Also making strong showings currently are (in no particular order): Tori
Amos, Genesis, Helloween, Lemur Voice, Yngwie Malmsteen, Manowar,
Marillion, Pantera, Pink Floyd, Joe Satriani, Stratovarius, Superior,
and Symphony X. As you can see, the wealth is being spread quite a bit.

We still have about 2 1/2 weeks, but don't delay -- SEND TODAY!

I found this bit of info on the Dokken and King's X pages:

DIO, Don Dokken, Jeff Pilson, Ty Tabor, Billy Sheehan, Steve Vai and
others have made a CD in Japan called "Munetaka Higuchi and Dream
    Castle".

Does anybody know anything about this CD and how to get it?
The info on the King's X page said it was only being sold in Japan and
that you would have to order it as an import. I have searched for it on
CDNOW and CDUniverse, but neither of them have it. What other sites are
there on the web where you can find specialty imports such as this one?
Please E-mail me privately with any info you can offer. Thanx a mil!

Just kidding! I suppose not, but I happen to love the song. Once, my g/f
was staying up at my apartment doing homework while I was at opera
rehearsal. Before I left, I told her to feel free to listen to any of my
CD's. When I came back, she was blaring 2112. I opened the door, looked
at the stereo, then looked at her. She was looking at me with the widest

When I'm in a really dark mood, not necessarily depressed or pissed
off, but just one of those serious, dark moods, I like putting on the
three Saviour Machine discs and playing them consecutively each in

Is there anyone out there that owns stuff from Angra, Shadow Gallery,
Superior, Stratovarius, and some of the other "great" bands I've been
hearing about on the jam? I'd like to find someone that owns at least
one CD of each of those (or almost all of them) that would be willing to
dub some of their favorite songs from those bands onto tape for me, so I
can have a listen. The more I hear about these bands, the more

others you might recommend for a die-hard DT/QR fan). Thanx!
