    Hello, everyone!
This is my first posting on this list, however I have been lurking
for some months now, but I thougt I wanted to share some thougts on
the John P./Vai thing that's been going on. It's a response on a
    post dated 30.06.97.
I've been a DT fan since '92 and can't wait for the Sept. release!!!
Before I go on, I have a request: Does anybody out there have info on
    the singles released off I&W?

(Someone claiming that Petrucci is better than
Vai, and that Vai doesn't play with musicians of the same caliber).
OK. First of all, I must admit it's hard being fan of both DT and
Vai, when confronted with the P vs V deal. As a fan of both
guitarists, I must claim that V. could play rings around P.

Then, of course, people would say: P. is more accurate live, than V.
is on most nights. That is probably correct, however, V. takes more
chances, he runs around more etc. When P. is doing a note-by-note
accurate passage he stands still (at least he used to), bites his
lips and buckles his knees and stares at the fretboard.

Vai's musician's are awsome, but if they are better than DT, I doubt
that, if they can be compared at all.

Vai has played with many moer bands and artists, and recording
    projects.

And, remember: Vai was a Zappa touring and session guitarist and
transcriber for 5 years, more or less, and the 1982 Zappa band was
probably the best live act that's existed, ever.(If you like, add
    "one of") :-)

Vai also does a lot of stuff himself, all the song writing,
Production, engineering, bass duties and runs his own studio, and he
    does everything brilliantly.

Not only my opinion, but also cold, brutal facts. :-)

Don't you think Machine Head must have been listening to Rush while they
were growing up? Their latest album is entitled "The More Things
Change..." and they keep repeating exactly the same lines from Hemispheres
    in their interviews too.

    Coincidence? Perhaps.

Hello, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Jim Suplizio I'm 26, I live in Raleigh, NC (moved there from Jersey about 9 months ago) and I'm a computer programmer. I joined this list to discuss and listen to discussions Dream Theater and bands like DT. I could honestly give a flying flip about this homosexuality string that people won't leave alone. Sexual preferences are up to the individual and regardless of another's "opinion" everyone has the right to make their own choices. But discussion of those choices belongs on another newsgroup, I'm here to talk about music.

On a better note I see people talking about what they play when they're trying to pull themselves out of depression, here's my usual

    1) Candlemass: Solitude 2) Testament: Return to Serenity 3) Savatage: Believe 4) Metallica: Fade to Black immediately followed by So What Then putting on a little death metal that seems to match the dark mood (ie Morbid Angel or Edge of Sanity) and I start feeling better or at least temporarily forget.

Am I the only one that worries that material like the above will be cut-n-snipped by that evil new producer ?? I tried to reach the band through "my sources", but so far they are not coming through. I can fearfully see it now: Burning My Soul 4:05, Just Let Me Breathe 3:55. But some "long" songs (just to please the old guard) = Peruvian Skies 5:45 and Metropolis II 6:02 .......

Well, this depends on when you went to high school. The first three Journey albums are great prog-rock (w/o Steve Perry, btw, which is a bonus point in my book). Especially the middle album Look into the Future. It just that they sound 20+ years old (because they are).

    Ahoy,

I had a wonderful idea 'ze other night. How about those of you jammers in Houston all getting together at a restautant for an evening of good food and prog talk? I decided to put a date way ahead of time would be wise, since most of us will be working during the week. I figured a good place to meet would be Texadelphia (home of great food) on Westheimer? Anybody in Houston or it's surrounding areas knows where this street is, or can find it no doubt. It's not a large place, but has a large outdoor deck area and plenty of space, and would probably suit nicely. The date I had in mind is August 8th, a Friday - some of you might be heading back to college later in the month, so this would avert that. Not to mention Queensryche on the 15th (I think), so that would still be free as well. Email me personally with all replys and/or ideas... Methinks this would be very cool! - Mark -

No, no, NO! I DIDN'T compare Ged's voice to Hootie's! I said it "sounds like Hootie...with Geddy singing." I should have said, "it sounds like Geddy after too many Molsons at a Hootie and the Blowfish Karaoke party.

The songwriting aspect is very subjective, so I'll defer to your opinion on that one. However, I think it is safe to say that 9 out of 10 guitarists would agree that Petrucci smokes him from a technical standpoint. cheers, -Neil.

if i wanna break a depression, i've got a handful of songs that usually help quite a bit...

"Sisters" - Steve Vai "Surrounded" - (duh) "Dying Day" - Vai "Suffocating the Bloom" - echolyn (yeah, the whole album) "Love You To Death" - Type O Negative "Voices" - Vangelis (again, the whole album)

someone mentioned being depressed and wanting to listen to depressing songs to wallow in your own self pity... been there, done that. "Something I Can Never Have" - NIN. that's always a good one for me.

No, i wasn't at the show, but I'm still curious, is the offer of the ann arbor poster a regional thing? Or is that in every Blues traveller CD across the nation? (or do they advertise a LA Forum show poster in CDs shipped to Southern California?)
