    Hello once again.

I thought I'd post my initial thoughts on the newly released Galactic
Cowboys CD, "The Horse That Bud Bought."

The previous description saying that it was like Machine Fish with the
harmonies thrown in is quite an apt description to me. I was thrown off
at first by the first song, "Tilt a Whirl" but the rest of the album
seems to continue in the direction of MF. It's definitely got some good
tunes ("Bound", "I Can't Wait", "My Life) and overall I'd have to say
that this disc is not going to disappoint those fans of GC, especially
those who enjoy MF. I'd rank it above MF but I don't know if I would
put it ahead of their first two discs just yet. Time will tell. It
actually took some time for MF to grow on me and this one caught on a
    bit quicker.

It would seem to me that it would make perfect sense to have GC open for
Fates Warning at the gigs in Texas and yeah, Louisiana too. That would
    be cool. yeah.

Picked up the new Galactic Cowboys today, "The Horse That Bud
Bought". Figured I'd put in my two drachmas. Dan, feel free to copy this
over to the SIYF list. Oh yeah, everyone give a high five to Dan
Temmesfeld, who is mentioned in the liner notes!! :)

The cover and packaging are just strange, but I actually kind of
like them. Monty's artistic style is derivative of a lot of
animation-style visualist type of art, and it works really well with the
images of the disproportionately-huge Horse on the cover and trayliner.

As for the music, I still am going to take time to familiarize
myself with the individual songs. Early hot spots are Evil Twin, Oregon,
and Ribbon. But as for the _sound_ of the music... now this is where THTBB
is a big improvement over Machine Fish. They fixed Monty's bass and
Wally's guitar so that the distortion sounds a lot cleaner and tighter,
and not as sloppy as on MF, though it's not as tight as on SIYF. Drums
sound less artificial, a process that has gradually gone along since the
first album. Vocals! Whoa, this band has vocals again! :) But seriously
folks... it seemed they were minimalizing the harmony work for MF, and
it's back up a notch on THTBB. Maybe Wally finally learned how to sing?

The songwriting continues to progress. As I thumb through the
lyrics I notice longer, more poetic songs; short but very tightly written
songs, condensed and yet expanded lyrics... they say more and more with
less and less with every album. They're learning where to move on and
where to explore. The self-titled album is just so immature in general
content, even though some of the songs are memorable enough to hold the
listener. This time, they're getting a lot more mileage from their ideas.

Anyway I'm certainly not disappointed. On the Horse scale of CD
ratings, I'd give this album four road apples out of a possible perfect
five. Not bad at all. Worth your while to try out, if you can find it.

    Hi all

Last night my girlfriend gave me her opinion of the new Paradise Lost album
'One Second'. She said she hadn't been so impressed by an album after just a
couple of spins since she first heard 'Awake'. Praise indeed!

On the subject of violin players, A. Nonymous mentioned Eddie Jobson from UK.
This person forgot to mention that Eddie also used to play for Roxy Music (if
ever a band had style, then it was Roxy Music) and for Curved Air (where the
Police drummer, Stuart Copeland, also swung the sticks for a while). On the
subject of violins in metal, how come nobody has mentioned that excellent
band from the shores of Albion known as Skyclad? Well worth checking out some
of their stuff, and if they ever play somewhere near you - GO!

Serious question: why would anybody want to own more than one copy of the same
album? I mean that seriously. It's just beyond me. I mean, be honest, there
are loads of great musicians who don't get the recognition that they possibly
deserve, but I don't owe them a fucking living.

Any news on the new albums by Vauxdvihl and Vanden Plas?

    stay safe and happy listening

    >Hey, I'm a big Kansas fan, too, but I haven't heard of *either* of these

It's called People of the South Wind: A Tribute to Kansas on Dreg
    Records.
It's on cassette and can be ordered from:
    http://www.human.com/dreg/
    dreg@hutman.com

They also have a sampler cd, and full-lengh cds from Facade and
    Clockwork.
I ordered it all, and can recommend Clockwork.

The live cd is called Kansas: Dust in the Wind on EMI-Capitol Music.
    Catalog number 72438-19411-2-6
I found it a the local electronics conglomerate, Circuit City, for
    $5.99.
There is no info about when the show was recorded but it's copyrighted
    1997 and 1992, so
I assume it was recorded in 92 and released in 97.

It was a part of their "Bleeding" tour and I filmed the almost 3 hours (!!!)

    > Actually, they did! Damn... I know too many people in the biz... so > now we know you support sellout bands just like Bafu...

    [snip]

    > No, we won't give it a rest, we like it when your pants are down...

Excuse me, folks, but this is getting quite out of hand.

Whereas I may find some of Bafu's argumentation irrelevant and some of his logic faulty, I still feel that I know when someone has come to the right conclusions.

I've seen a lot of shallowness, misunderstanding and opinionated people singing gospel to their own, superficial opinions. Sometimes it makes me think that the freedom of speech is way overrated.

Okay, I take it, MOST people are opinionated. Taking sides, I still know I am. This is still no good reason for superficiality.

Generalizations, skin-deep analysis or the absolute lack thereof, jumping on the bandwagon of accusing someone of jumping on a bandwagon... That's what I see and what I don't believe in. There HAS got to be more to life than "that comfort zone you've grown to love".

Most people dislike what they don't understand. I thought that given a certain educational and intellectual level over the average, the factor decreases. I've proved myself wrong. I lack the knowledge to say if that is caused by the haughtiness of spirit or just a big superiority complex. This is where progress equals stagnancy.

I'm implying: don't ever think you're good enough to be the judge. Some people, I already think I know who, will definitely quote this sentence and accuse me of trying to be one. I'm not. I'm just trying to get my message across.

There was a discussion similar to this one we have here in an estonian FidoNET area. Finally, the moderator just had to ban the topic. It always has the tendency of getting personal. It has here. "Bafu supports sell-out bands, you do too, you suck..." Blah blah. Why? Why is people's negative attitude towards something beyond their grasp always aimed at those people who express diametrically different opinions?

And why even bother? Whose faith will you suffocate if you don't always talk about hating something?

I know I've forgotten to say something, I guess I've misused a couple of words. I may lack the education (with my 21 years of age, soon to be 22, I haven't even had time to graduate high school), but what I do have is intellect and an awkward ability to analyze. I do hope someone at least partly agrees with what I have to say, but knowing the general shallowness of American culture and the attitude it breeds, I'd rather doubt it. The list is mainly US-based, isn't it?

If you flame, do it intelligently, please.

Anybody in for banning the word "sell-out"?

Uhm, sorry but I completely disagree with this statement. If MP hits a 14" hand-hamered crash at the end of a measure instead of a 16" crash with a brilliant finish (these are terms I learned from looking at my friends Sabian catalog) I don't think anybody is going to care that much. However if JP takes off his low B it's going to make Lie sound a lot more wimpy. It won't have any balls OR chunk. I don't want to start a huge war here, but I think even MP will admit that he'd be able to get by with say, 15 cymbals, and the extra 5 are just for fun. Hell, Rod Morgenstein totally kicks ass with about 10.

Since GC opened for DT I thought I'd post to the list. I've got all the Galactic Cowboy's cd except for the new one which I will get. I think that the first cd is the best. I feel it has the best harmony vocals and isn't as thrashy as Machine Fish. Space in Your face is good as well but I really really hate the hidden tracks.

I wasn't planning on it since I tried to get a DT fantasy Basketball league going and no one was interested in that. I then did a fantasy baseball and I think only 1 person from the list joined up. But if there is interest we could easily get a Ytsejam league set up. I've only used ESPN's fantasy games and am pretty happy using them. All of it is done online and ESPN handles all the stat keeping and such. I'm not sure what the price will be but for first time users or non sportszone subscribers it may cost 29.95. I feel that it is worth it since it is a lot of fun. If anyone else is interested let me know and I will see about setting up a DT league. If no one is interested I will be playing anyway. So if you want to be part of a Ytsejam Fantasy Football league send me an email. You'll need web access and a decent browser Netscape 3.0+

I hope some other jammers are interested.

ah, finally, something I can talk about. I know dick about guitars. IMO, you can have enough cymbals, but as long as you're adding new sounds to your kit, it's cool. I mean, if you just add 3 identical crashes for the sole purpose of having some new targets or filling space, you need to find some better uses for your money. In MP's case though, I'm surprised he makes the sounds he does with only 20.

Along the same vein, I was at a Wynton Marsailis concert a couple of years back, and they had a guest drummer come in to do a solo. I wish I could remember his name, but this old guy, must have been 65 or so, hobbled in, sat down on the throne in front of a 4 piece with a hi-hat, a ride, and 2 crashes, and poceeded to perform the most amazing drum solo I've ever seen in my life. He went on for about 10 minutes, and everything he did was just unreal, and he did it on a 4 piece!!!! When he was done, he got up, not even winded, and left the stage. Just goes to show that it's not the size of the set that counts, it's how you use it. (Sorry, it was way too tempting.)

    I'm done sharing now.

If Al owes Pat tapes and won't pay up, he should not be on this list. It's a shame that you think that Pat should just deal with the loss, while Al stays on the list and just ignores his debt.

    Hello fellow jammers!

I would like to thank all of you who recommended Bruce Dickinsons: Accident of Birth-album.Otherwise I would have never bought it,because I didnīt really like his earlier solo albums.AoB rocks!Bruce has finally found his style. This album vaguely reminds me of Iron Maidens: Somewhere in Time.I really like all the songs in this album, but here are the gems(IMO,of course):"Taking the queen" "Darkside of aquarius" "Accident of Birth" Also,Iīm thinking about purchasing my first Queensryche-album.Believe it or not,I have never heard any of their songs(atleast I think I havenīt...")What album would you guys recommend as my first?

Anyone know why Fates isn't playing in Baltimore? I mean they are going through 3 cities in Ohio and can't play Baltimore where DT always sells out? That's the problem with prog music. Management doesn't support them they way they should.

This is my last post about the Al B subject. I sent him an email saying that he is off the hook. I've cleared him of his debt. I won't post here about it again.

To those that have flamed me about this subject. Stop it buttmunches :P

To those who have supported me. Thanks.
