Never heard of 'em... Doubt Drain has either :)
Steve:

He's thinking:
1) After this shred fest is over, how do I get out the back door before
the jammanoids swarm?
2) Why the fuq did they put that picture of me up? I know I'm gonna
catch some flaq over that one :)
3) Can I possibly get Ibanez to charge more for this guitar?
4) These fuqin jamanoids know too damn much! I don't have enough shirts.
I better think up tougher questions.
> I don't know why my post was replied to with "It ain't braggin' if

I rarely know why I do most things.
It was a joke.
Apparently "showing off" was then interpreted differently from
"showman".
Where I come from (God only knows :), showing off and bragging often had
the same connotation.
I don't see JP as doing either, anyways. He enjoys what he does, and I
enjoy watching/hearing him do it. End of line....

Here's a possbility for a thread. Hope it hasn't been discussed before.
If it already has, someone e-mail me. Or embarrass me in public,
whatever gets you off ;)
Have we ever gone over great DT moments within a song? It can an be
anything. An individual moment, a group moment, whatevah!
For example, here's an MP moment:
During Lie at around 3:40-3:50, Doctor Portnoy provides me with a great
moment in only 10 seconds! Is what he's doing there, what I hear people
refer to as playing "accross the beat?" Whatever it is, it works!
Regards,
Jon

Like, duh... Everyone who believes that this might be Merlo
writing this, LOOK AT THE FAQING Message ID. It is from some dumbass on
eramp.net. There is no remailer at www.eramp.net, so likely it is a user
from there. Or in a more succinct way, a wacko from Waco, most likely.
(Apologies to those who aren't fucknuts from Waco.) Who'd you piss off

On another note,
I'm there for the Danvers Rudess/Morgenstern show, any other New

Nope. I think that fight left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
Dragon*Con kicked ass. It was, for me, a reunion of the Birch Hill '96
trip from the Heart of Dixie to New Jersey. I enjoyed spending a bit
more quality time with Paul, Wes, and Jennifer. You gotta love those
nonuple-occupancy hotel rooms :) To any other 'jammers that were there,
I'm sorry we didn't get to meet. I was wearing my long-sleeve Fix for
'96 shirt as prominently as I could. I guess DT shirts aren't so
noticeable when members of GWAR are parading around the room in all of
their unbridled comstumery :)
/me finally created some good-sounding .ra files! Yay! One of these days
I'll be considered computer literate, possibly....

And you and I think that's criminal. But it's also part of the beauty of a Rush show -- some people go ballistic when they hear "Animate" or "Roll the Bones," some when they hear "The Trees" or "In the Mood." "Tom Sawyer," "Spirit of Radio" and "Closer to the Heart" seem to be the most universal, but everyone has their favorites. My favorite Rush song (well...my favorite song, period) is "Time Stand Still," and I was thrilled that they've been playing "Resist" on most of this tour. It's a great thing, man, a great thing...unanimity is boring, thank God we've got something to argue about.
>From: Buck Stodgers <andrew.t.forcier@prudential.com> > >Actually, I wait until the end of the song so I can be sure to hear >everything. :) At G3 shows, I save frantic screaming for Stu Hamm's bass >solo.
As do I. But I play bass, so perhaps that's cheating. You ever notice that, though? Stu seems to get as much, if not more, appreciation for his playing than the other guys. It's amazing.

I haven't seen "Face Off" (plan to, of course, ASAP), but I'm with you on "Chasing Amy." It's the best movie I've seen since....hell, I don't even know. Don't agree with you on the all-time great, though -- I'd opt for "The Holy Grail." Seriously. Monty Python is, as they say, the shit.

Jammers,
I have a friend who is staying in Tokyo for the summer, and he told me that he would be willing to pick me up almost anything I desire. So, I started thinking about what Japanese CDs I wanted, and I couldn't think of too many. I have the following CDs from Japan:
DT - Awake DT - Live at the Marquee QR - Best I Can (single) QR - Promised Land QR - Hear in the Now Frontier
If any jammers have suggestions, please email me at bogie@mit.edu. I'm looking for stuff with hard to find tracks.
Also, if any jammers could suggest any good shops in Tokyo which have a good selection of bootlegs, please let me know of the addresses so that I can tell my friend to check those places out.
Thanks, Bogie

Just wondering if you caught Timothy Pure (the band)? I seem to remember something about them playing there this year. Their first album is really good, and I'm wondering what some of the new stuff sounds like.

Hey Jammers,
Had lunch with a friend of mine today who showed me the latest (July/August) issue of Internet Underground magazine. As you can probabl guess, this is a mag dedicated to the 'Net. One of their regular features is a section called the Web Guide that has a bunch of cool web sites and little blurbs about them. Well, this issue had a bit about the official DT site. Here's what they had to say:
"Lifting the Shadows: Thought heavy metal was all leather and 400 SAT scores? Think again, bub: The official Dream Theater page is dedicated to progressive-metal mavens who hope to re-establish heavy metal as a musical art form. They've got their work cut out for them, but this Web site starts the battle. Dream Theater has an intricate Fan Network, detailed member biographies, and links to other fans' pages."
That's on page 72, btw. IU's web site in www.wunderground-online.com, email is iu@mcs.com, if you feel compelled to comment.
On another note, I got the debut disc from finneus gauge today. After only one listen, I can only say I am impressed. The obvious comparison is to echolyn, since Chris Buzby played keys for them as well, but finneus sound quite distinctive. Much heavier, in terms of intensity (not balls n' chunk), than echolyn ever was, really, and much more jazzy/fusiony. I've heard some comparisons with early UK, which makes sense, as Scott McGill sounds like the second coming of Alan Holdsworth. I need a few more listens to get a really detailed impression. Check out my web page for a full review in a week or so.
Jam on . . .

Probably because your mail is coming from a new Message-ID. Perhaps this new acquisition fills you with pride. As for me, I think all you greedy e-mail address-hogging eels should be strung out on a barb-wire clothesline and hung out to dry in the stinging winds of a seething lava-flow. That'd teach you. Then I'd get out the yardstick and REALLY punish you, I mean get about five nuns with rulers and chalkboard erasers and go EDUCATIONAL on your ass.

The only weird part here is the attempt at framing Mr. Merlo as someone who, um... what's the word... ah yes, CARES. ;)
> Yet now, I feel as if I have been living, or typing, a lie. I haven't > been true to anybody on this list, and quite ashamedly, I have taken to > lying about something to my friends here for some time now.
Not to degrade the prose of Mr. Merlo, but we of the Bafu Collective feel that eloquence of this level on the part of D-Man would require at the very least a waltz with Ecstacy. (I'm venting my rage at the imposter by insulting D-Man. does it get any better than this?) :)

HELLO? Have you READ THE FAQ?? It says right at the top, "Maintained by Chris Merlo, who rebelliously burned his kindergarten school to the ground." Ergo, he never ATTENDED elementary school!! I think we can all tell from this little slip-up that you CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!

Am I Bafu?

OK, after I posted the setlist Sammy Hagar did at the concert he and his band performed in Sioux City, Iowa, on Saturday, June 28, I saw the comments of Vincent LuPone. These must be addressed.
First, Vincent wrote:
Okay, first there's nothing heavy or metal about any music sammy's ever done, he's a cock-rocker. Every single song is about sex. That sucks IMHO. Heavy music deals with heavy issues.
My response is: Vince, have you ever listened to anything Sammy has done? Obviously not! Let me cite the record:
"Salvation On Sand Hill" is a song about faith, a topic Sammy has never shyed away from. Many of his songs have been positive about faith, it's one of the reasons I like Sammy, who introduced this song in concert as being about faith and keeping your faith in troubled times. How many other bands/artists are as positive about faith like Sammy when he writes about it?
"Who Has The Right?" is about the violence in today's society. "Remember The Heroes" is about Vietnam vets and how bad it was for this society to forget them after the war. "Dreams" is about holding on to your dreams, no matter how many times you fail. ("Standing on broken dreams, never losing sight, just spread your wings....) "Returning Home" has always been one of my faves. "Give To Live" certainly has a positive message. "Kama" is about his daughter ("what do we call this miracle?...").
Sammy has plenty of the fast cars, girls, and party songs in his arsenal, but when you listen to the albums he has done, especially "Marching To Mars," you see that he isn't one dimensional in his songwriting.
As for the "80's" style, the bands/artists who were all glam and no substance have faded away. Sammy has lasted because he can write good songs, and his voice still is one of the best in the biz. I have seen Sammy in concert 4 times now, and he has never disappointed.
The song "Heavy Metal," featured in the animated film of the same name, is a typical rock song for the early 80's, but shouldn't be confused with Metallica.
So, chill out Vince, and go back and listen to Sammy's stuff, especially the songs not played on the radio. "Marching To Mars" is a damn good album, Sammy claims it is his best. It isn't metal, but hard rock (yes, there is a difference). You'll find more than cock-rock on it, I guarantee.
