In high school, I bought just about everything that Shrapnel records put out
as well as stuff from all the up-and-coming shredmasters. If anyone wants to
swap tapes, please let me know. I'm not into it as much anymore (nor do I
have the extra $$$ to waste on Craig Goldy and Ritchie Kotzen CDs...), but I
do enjoy listening to them once in a while.

If anyone has any of the "newer" Mike Bahr CDs that they would like to trade,
I have "Scenes From a Memory", "Antiquiites" and "When Dream and Today Unite".
I'd like to get "Precious Things", "Darkest of Winters" and any other Mike
    Bahr creation.

After, this show, I clarified some things:

-There is 2 guys in Neil body, one for his arms and one for his legs.
This was my idea after the first part of the drum solo(the one in three).

-Geddy can still reach the higher in freewill! I was so proud of him!

-Alex's solos are better than ever.

-Some people don't have a place in a Rush show. The girl in front of me
had her peak in roll the bones. Most of the time, she was sit.
-"Hey! Wake up! You have 2112 full version in front of you!"
      -"What? 21 what?"
      -"Nevermind..."
And she went to the bar during Natural Science...

PS. D-man! Where were you? I checked all green caps of the Peel pub!

As much as I'm on the side of Richie concerning most of his 80's views, I
have to point out that "10 seconds to love" from the Shout at the Devil
album, is indeed about 'elevator sex'. I also have to state that after a
week of listening, Generation Swine is my least favorite album of theirs.

Dickinson's Accident of Birth is the best album I have heard in probably 5
    years.

I feel I must stand up for Tom Cruise here. You're ignoring a third of his
acting range. He's not just young and cocky. He's also Brash. And no,
Brash and cocky are not the same thing. Well, not exactly. Not entirely
anyway. But no one does Brash like Tom Cruise.

I agree fully. Saw them at Ozzfest 8 days ago. By far the best second
stage act. Even surpassed some of the main stage acts (Fear Factory),
IMO. Drain will definitely be one of my next CD purchases. The only
thing that bugged me is that the only band with a drummer that plays
simpler beats than Drain is AC\DC. A monkey could drum AC\DC. It would
take a smart monkey to drum Drain. Lastly, the lead singer kinda looks
like Sebastian Bach from a distance. :)

    To the jam:
I wanted to drop a line to say thank you to all those who took the time to
write and support me with your get well wishes. Techrat showed me every
jam and e-mail I received about my accident. It's cool to know that the jam
really does care for it's own, despite any difference of opinion. I'm sorry
I'm not able to personally respond to all the
e-mails; Techrat killed most of them on me. (Way to go, bud!) Since one handed
typing is kinda useless, I think I'll be lurking for a while.
    Once again, thank you.

Yeah...I didn't end up minding Kari Wuhrer too much (though I thought it was
amusing that she played a college student several years after appearing on
"Remote Control"), but I'm not sure most of the folks who've followed in her
footsteps have been talented in the slightest. Then again, I suppose their
pulchritude is talent of a different sort.

    >stomach a little "Up All Night?" Can YOU?

I'm not sure Slaughter's a TYPE of music, but I agree with your point. I
can't stand the band. I think "having an open mind" is something along the
lines of being willing to fairly evaluate the music -- if Slaughter released
a new album and it was better than "Awake," for example, being able to
recognize it as such, rather than dismissing it out of hand.

There isn't a lot of music out there that I dislike, but Slaughter's in that
category. And I know there was some positivity being expressed about the
band earlier, but I don't care for Depeche Mode, either. I don't much care
for the Wu-Tang Clan, either...I'd opt for Public Enemy or Urban Dance Squad.

    So there's that.

And, making up for the mainstream-ity of the last set of CD's...

    Hello there...
            First off:
    >if your at a Steve Vai concert do you cheer louder when he plays a slow
    >melodious riff or a furious octuplet tapping frenzy?

Actually, I wait until the end of the song so I can be sure to hear
everything. :) At G3 shows, I save frantic screaming for Stu Hamm's bass
    solo.

    >there must have been people posting to this list expressing their
    >dislike of technical guitarwork.

This may have been me. I expressed a dislike for guitarists that perfect
the technical only to sacrifice feel. I feel that Malmsteen is this type
of guitarist. Vai is IN NO WAY this type of guitarist. If I implied
that, it was a mistake on my part.
But so you know, my favorite section of a Vai song (though not my
favorite song entirely) is in For The Love Of God. It is a hammer-on,
slide combination. I don't have the disc handy, or I'd give you a time
index, but this section is the best in Vai's repetoire, IMHO. There is
the perfect balance of technique and feel in that song, IMHO. For a
similar comparison, see also Joe Satriani's Baroque: the single greatest
    song ever recorded.
            Chris Bellardine:
    >I read some posts about Satriani and Vai being to best, but these guys
    >don't play with the caliber musicians that Petrucci plays with.

Ummm.... WHAT!? Stu Hamm (Joe's touring bassist) has won bassist polls
up the wahzoo. And on top of that has played with Eric Johnson, Steve
Vai, and Joe Satriani. Satch has also played with Nathan East, Manu
Katche, Gregg Bissonette, and Johnathan Mover. Each of those guys is
among the best in their field. Vai has played with Billy Sheehan, Rudy
Sarzo, Gregg Bissonette, Terry Bozzio, Frank Zappa, and Devin Townsend
(kidding :) ). I think you should make better informed judgements before
posting them to the Jam. This sounds like the opinion of someone who
knows nothing about the artists he is arguing against.
This is not to knock JP. He is phenomenal, and plays with some of the
best musicians out there. But to say he is better than Satch or Vai
would be starting that legends debate again. JP is amazing, 'nuff said.

    >If anyone here hasn't seen "Face Off" yet, for hell's sake, GO.

Agreed! This bumps Grosse Pointe Blank into the #3 spot for the year. #1
still being Chasing Amy. It'll be tough to dethrone that one. This is,
of course, excepting the SE Star Wars Trilogy. Empire is the greatest
movie ever made and what is understood need not be discussed (it's
    anonymous, so it ain't plagiarism...).

Hi, all!! I'm fairly new here, so just wanted to sorta say hi to = everyone on the jam. I'm an 18 year old DT freak, and it's great to = find people who actually know what prog is. I thought I was the only = one around who listened to both Genesis and Metallica. :)

I know, I'm a newbie, and really haven't been on the jam long enough to = be posting this after just lurking around for a few weeks, but this was = just something I had to respond to.

: BTW, Motley Crue??? What the hell? I thought things were pretty bad = with : all the Megadeth talk, but Motley Crue? We don't care people! This = is a : Dream Theater list! That means we prefer hearing about Dream Theater = or : other PROG music! You know, like Rush, Fates Warning, etc.? That's = PROG! : Not cock-rock, not Motley Crue, not even metal, but P-R-O-G (not = Prague)!

Maybe you've forgotten the other half of what DT is labeled. Usually = its called Progressive METAL. I may be a prog freak, but I'm also a = 100% down to the core metal freak. Being a metal freak does not mean = you worship Satan or wear all black. I don't do either. This jam is = for DT, but there are people on this mailing list who like metal too. = So, unless most of the list protests, we're free to discuss whatever = kind of metal we want.=20

Just a little worthless rant I had to get out of my system.

Um to quote Motley Crue in "10 Seconds to Love" from the Shout at the Devil cd (which is a darn fine cd!): "Touch my gun but don't pull my trigger. Let's make history in the elevator."

Sounds like elevator sex to me, but what do I know. :)

No no, I recant. I -am- gay. It was childish of me to take back something which obviously took a lot of courage. So, in short, I am gay.

    Gayer than a hootananny.

OK.... heres the run down on Paramaecium (the band) and Within the Ancient Forest (the album) - (BTW an australian band.)

    >> 5. Within the Ancient Forest - Paramaecium =20 >How does this one compare to the first album? I kinda >dig the slow=20 >heaviness with the occasional orchestral feel of the first >one, but I=20 >haven't heard aquat form this.

    >Their first one was entitled Exhumed of the=20 >Earth, I believe. Some good stuff if you dig that heavy >rock and=20 >roll, and can stomach those cookie monster vocals :).

OK - the orchestral feel is way more than occasional here- this one is *MUCH* more varied and musically interesting... much use is made of piano/keys, also sprinkled throughout are flute, harpsichord and cello giving the whole thing a gothicy / medieval feel.... the vocals also are somewhat surprising ... along with the "cookie monsters" the singer also uses a 'normal' singing voice, as well as (3) different female vocalists, including one soprano. As well as! both male and female 'spoken word' parts....=20

Overall this is still a 'heavy' disc - Paramaecium have suceeded in a very heavy ,slow, dark, moody feel ... but if thats how you like it - its brilliant! and the variety and texture of the various vocal and musical components make it a very listenable disc... dare I say very progressive . = =20 (Basically - I am not a big fan of death/doom and although this album is based in those genres I am growing extremely fond of this one - a definite 'grower'...)

    > I know there's a book that goes along=20 >with WtAF, too.=20

The book with this album comes a short novel - although you have to buy it= seperately. and though I have it I'm yet to read it (its been here on my bookshelf probably over 9months - so basically i'm just a slacker) but my brother in law read it said it was a really good book - but then again he is a big fantasy fan.....=20 so ... I'm yet to pass judgement on it.

this is from the liner notes ->

'the storyline of this album is entirely based on the novel "Within the Ancient Forest" by (vocalist) Andrew Tompkins. The novel is written in the fantasy genre and it tells the story of De-nyl , a young man searching for ultimate truth and meaning for life in a land where Immortals, dragons, magic, and the powers of darkness are very real; a search which eventually leads him to the legendery Firetree and immortality. The story is an allegorical account of Andrew's own search for and discovery of absolute truth and meaning of life. If you read the lyrics you'll realise that this album provides only a glimpse of this incredible story. In short , the album is imcomplete without the novel.' <- guess i'v got some reading to do then. :) =20

as an aside Jayson Sherlock (the drummer - and quite good at it too) thanks some band called Dream Theatre?=BF in the thank-yous.=20 =20
