Well, I've had one affirmative response to my story, so I thought I'd go ahead
and post pat ads wht kind of reaction I'd get. If people like it, I'll post
more. If they don't, I'll just send it to those that do.

    Enjoy!

    Metropolis
    by Eric LaRue
based on "Metropolis" by Dream Theater

"The smile of dawn arrived early May
She carried a gift from her home.
The night shed a tear to tell her of fear and of sorrow and pain
    she'll never outgrow.

    Death is the first dance-eternal."

The city moaned as the violence continued. The gunfire, the shouts, and the
crackling fires all contribute to a collective Metropolitan cry for peace.

    "Sleeper! Sleeper! Wake up!"

Sleeper, true to his name, remained in his deep state of unconsciousness.

"Sleeper! Wake the hell up! I need your help, dammit!"

Sleeper didn't respond. In exasperation, Miracle said, "So that's why they
call you the sleeper! Damn you, I guess I'll have to do this myself. So don't
blame me if I screw up!"

    ---

Paul was rushing to get in his uniform so that he could begin his watch on time. As he was struggling to get ready, his sister, Jennifer walked in. "You need to slow down, Paul."

"Yeah, let's see you be a cop and take it easy!"

She laughed. "No, I think being a cop's sister and a cop's wife will be enough for me."

"Oh, being a cop's wife will do a number on you, trust me." He had a bittersweet remembrance of his late wife, who died in childbirth of their first child.

    "Yes, but Daniel's worth it."

    "You'll make an excellent wife."

"That's why he's marrying me! Now come on. You need to get some breakfast."

Paul chortled. "You really will make a good wife!"

    Jennifer simply smiled.

Paul was ecstatic when she announced that she was engaged to his partner, Daniel Marks. Now his partner would also be his brother in law. Now they'd have more stuff to argue about.

    ---

Paul arrived at the station and met up with Daniel. "Paul, how are you?"

"Pretty good. You ready for your big day Friday?"

"I've been ready for Jenny since the day you introduced us!

"Keep your cock in your pants, Dan. We've got to get through tonight, first!

"Oh, come on, Paul, you're no fun!"

    They both laughed.

    ---

The war began again. The screams of light raged across the night sky, as they always did. And in a small corner of the war were Paul and Dan.

"Well, you ready for this, Paul?"

    "As always."

"Well, let's do it. Womb to tomb?"

    "Birth to earth."

    "Bernstein sucks."

    "Webber is God."

They both chuckled at the humor of their own joke. And with their nightly ritual complete, they went out to face the battle.

Paul and Dan ran out, as they had been trained to do, and kept looking for cover. Each time they reached a new haven, they looked around, aimed their gun, and fired. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they missed. It didn't matter, just as long as they didn't let any civilians get hurt, and as long as they didn't get hurt themselves.

Suddenly, Paul ran out from behind one of the barrels and met head on with laser fire. He fell down instantly and was taken down flat on his back. He lay there, frightened, breathing heavily, wondering what was to become of him.

Suddenly, he felt someone grab a hold of him by the shoulders and pull him away. He couldn't see clearly who it was and he wasn't strong enough to fight back. He just could pass out and let himself be dragged away.

He just hoped this person was friendly.

    End Part 1

Complete with burning guitars, bashed up drum sets and sealed with a kiss,

came across and add for a few cds, and I was hoping somebody could give some insight on these bands/albums: Altar of Kings self titled album, described in ad as Bay Area Metal, Loud and Catchy; Change of Seasons "Cold Sweat" described as Dutch Progressive Metal; and New World "Changing Times" described as "A perfect link between Pantera and Dream Theater". I am of course especially interested in the New World cd, since I think both Dream Theater and Pantera are great bands and a mix of their styles would make for some very interesting music.

    Hey hey hey...

Well, still no one has responded to my plea for help regarding the "Guitar Talkin / Acoustic + Clinic" DT boot CD on Kobra Records. Surely, SOMEBODY's gotta know something... anyone? Argh... I guess I'm resigned to suffer indignantly... :-)

Hey, got a question about a band I've read good thingz about: it's a band called Anathema. Metal Maniacs magazine is TOTALLY raving about their latest album. And, I kind of take what they say seriously since their raves turned me on to Amorphis in a big way. Anywayz, if anyone has any comments or whatnot regarding Anathema, please either post it to the Jam or e-mail me privately. Thank you.

Also, I wuz totally jamming to the Ryche's "Warning" today, and I just had to ask the question that's been haunting me for years: What the hell is Tate mumbling in the middle of "Roads To Madness"? I think it's my all-time fave Ryche tune, and I'm dying to know what he's saying in that part where they break it down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, 'nuff said. Sorry 'bout the NDTC (at least for part of the letter...)

Winger - Paul Taylor toured with Steve Perry a couple of years ago Pre Winger, Reb Beach did plenty of session work for producer Beau Hill. The Kip Winger sol album is superb (-:

hey all.. just snagged myself a kick into a dream today, figure it couldnt hurt to give a happy little acknowledgement of it here.. one of the far better audience recordings out there, some parts of it you'd think were soundboard, not to mention its ultra-groovy-cool :) so if you're looking for something not the japan PPV show, this would be it. its got TOWHTSTS on it too :)

other than that, if you all want to hear some really demented music thats been recorded by two people who've never met in person in two whole other states completely over the internet, go to http://beefquad-x.home.ml.org/ i've never plugged this before here, so why not, i just set up the page and all.. no dt covers yet, but one day we will.. its a project done by ben laussade and i, so go give it a look if ya got nothin' else to do :)

well, i'll give this much info on it- if you're in america, tough cowhide, you're probably not going to find it here.. i only know of a few guys overseas who've got it.. but if you do find it, i want one too :)

anyways, i figure the lack of cow content has been a bit too low lately, i justt need to revive it a bit.. see.. i'm reinstating my idea previously noted about a year ago, we have to buy an island on the fiji island chain, then we can construct this giant cow, and run a global domination system where we dispatch giant hovering cities that fly around with 900 decibal speakers playing DT everywhere they go, then people who suck can just be hauled up with some hooks and fed to giant festering bulls in three piece suits who when you look at them the wrong way imagine what you might look like in their breakfast cereal maybe in the ring of a cheerio or something... well.. then they eat you. we'd all quit our jobs and school, and we wouldnt need money because we'd dominate the world and we could just lower some people down into farmlands and take some crops, and we could eat little bits of cows, without hurting them.. like we could put them to sleep for a while, then remove some meat, then they'd wake back up and we'd give them some flowers so they could still be happy, then even vegetarians could enjoy the wonders of eating meat, and then we could take this new cloning idea and clone the guys in dt so we can create a whole race of people that looks just like dt and you wake up in the morning and drive to work and theres fifty thousand mike portnoys on the highway honking their horns and screaming "HEY FUCK YOU BUDDY!!" and then you wake up cuz you had a nightmare and in the real clone world all the mike portnoy lookalikes are real nice and everyone is in harmony because of the music of dt.

or then again.. maybe i'll go get on irc...

    later ;) ~Rip

ps- wondering what happened to the flying cow? stay tuned.

Hello, everyone. I am working on a MIDI file that plays ACoS. A big reason I decided to try this is because I could not find one anywhere when I looked for one. I couldn't find LtL either, but that's beside the point. If anyone knows where a MIDI of ACoS can be found, could you let me know somehow? Otherwise I'm going to keep banging my head against the keyboard until I finish it. I've almost worked my way through part 2, so it'll be a few more days, to say the least, before I'm finished :)

One other question: Is anyone else getting spammed by Kiss the Stone (KTS)? I am getting a couple dozen garbage emails a day from all sorts of people, but the subject is always "A Secret Message from KTS" and the emails all have to do with bootleg CDs. I think I have been accidentally signed up to a list, in ack mode, that deals with KTS bootlegs. If any other 'jammers are familiar with this list, please tell me how to unsubscribe, because I've tried everything I know, but nothing seems to work.

Got to go now, so be cool, everyone,

and that's just the subject line!

finally catching up on all of the jams, and so I have some questions/comments.

first, somebody (Kevin Madden?) mentioned that he saw a Finneus Gauge CD -- can anyone tell me more? My understanding is that they do not begin recording until later this month... And what about Still?

second, I picked up the 'Dragon Attack' CD a while ago (among many others) and, in general, was not too terribly impressed. (This may be because Queen was my favourite band until I discovered Dream Theater; or it may have to do with the *reasons* that Queen was my favourite band.) What follows is a long and disjointed review, interrupted by a lengthy DTC aside. I thought it would be a good idea to balance all the glowing reviews that have recently appeared concerning this album with my more even-handed and objective viewpoint. (BIG smiley) The tribute is too wankerish overall, with only a few bright (read: restrained) spots. It smacks of a collection of eighties glam has-beens getting one last shot at what they do best. This does get better with repeated listens, however. (coincidentally, I felt the same about the Working Man tribute at first...though not so mean) I really like JP's 'another one Bites the Dust;' unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed by KJL's singing. Too 'raunchy' for my tastes. -- speaking of Mister LaBrie, I acquired a clandestine copy of 'Where Are You Now' during the short period in which it was available on some here-unnamed rogue website <g>; I realise that it is probably not entirely tactful to discuss it here, but I just hafta get my thoughts out. (Incidentally, I would have liked to see more in-depth discussion of the new songs after the 'fix' shows. But I realize that a limited number of people went to those, and memories are not all that they're ...something or other) Anyway, I really like this song. It is catchy and oh! everything; as someone mentioned, very radio-friendly. Perhaps of necessity, that precludes overt progressive elements; in this case, that supposition is true. But the high point for me is in the singing. If LaBrie would sing like this on all the songs, I'd just as soon forego any progginess --and I am a veritable prog-head. (I probably don't mean that. But the song is simply tasty.) Something that I found interesting is the first solo -- it sounds like Derek is doing guitar on keyboard. Intriguing; it sounds cool; but I hope that that is simply an isolated instance. I know that he has cited guitarists as his major influences, but I certainly would not want to see an album full of keyboard solos that sound as though they were meant to be guitar solos. Finally, I am confused on whether this is a live recording or not. It could be live because of apparent crowd noise at the end of the song, and because the keys and guitars are not 100 percent spot-on during the second solo (which, I'm sure, is one reason why the band doesn't want these available...see, they're not aliens after all); however, LaBrie backs himself towards the end of the song, which strikes me as being physically impossible in a live situation. (or we're back to the alien question...) -- back to the 'Dragon Attack' review -- a couple of the singers sound familiar, but because I haven't heard most of them since the 80's, I can't quite place them. To wit: Robin McAuley and Glenn Hughes (Mister Hughes sounds like a blues fellow, actually.) If someone could help me out there, I might remember you in my will. And finally, Tony Franklin has a *very* distinctive bass sound --in what band(s), besides the Firm, has he appeared? and really finally, the high points: 'Save Me' -- they managed not to ruin it; guitar on 'Another One Bites the Dust' -- introducing Mr. Petrucci le Fonque 'Sheer Heart Attack' -- if only because it is better than the original, which still drives me nuts (this is a bad thing). and really truly finally, the low points: 'WWRY/WATC' -- it's every bit as bad as everyone has said singing on 'Tie You Mother!' (Lemmy, go swimming with a brick); singing on 'It's Late' -- really weak voice; his backup is better (!) verdict: It's not Queen. but then, who is? -- one last aside on this topic -- does anyone else think that Queen's final three albums are some of the best produced albums out there? So yet another (albeit tardy) suggestion on the producer topic (God forbid they have not yet found one fer keeps) -- Dave Richards. And/or the rest of Queen. Maybe have Brian do a few guitar trax... wake me up when it's here.

I must commend you if you are still with me. and now for something completely different -- well, almost completely. Actually, it's only a little bit different.

as a result of jammer recommendations, I picked up Yanni's 'Live at the Acropolis' and the Gatherings's 'Mandylion' 'Live..' has spent a ridiculous amount of time in my player recently; really good stuff. Much more complex and intense than I expected. Excellent musicianship, too. I was particularily impressed by the bass and violin. The violinist seems to have graduated from the Jon-Luc Ponty school of Razorwire and Flying Fingers. 'Mandylion' was not quite as impressive, unfortunately. interesting in bits, but overall not very exciting/outstanding.

and since I'm so conveniently already on the subject, here follow reviews of two more discs that have taken up residence in my player: Mike Oldfield's 'Ommadawn' and Gentle Giant's 'Freehand' --'Ommadawn' is hard to describe to one who has not heard Oldfield. It is very much like soundtrack music, I suppose, with a clear progression in each long song to the inevitable conclusion (which, frighteningly enough, is polka flavoured...one wonders what the message is here.) Really great compositions, altogether, with lots of catchy bits and snatches of near-silliness (tho no 'piltdown man' here, thankfully). --'Freehand' is the first GG album to attach itself of its own accord to my fancy. Maybe it is simply because of 'Talybont,' maybe because it is a well-rounded album...in any case, if you enjoy complexity in instrumentation and voice, in shorter compositions, these guys are for you. caution: listen before you buy -- probably an acquired taste. octopus is good, too. reference: echolyn sounds as tho they may have been influenced by these guys.

after all that, I feel as though there were more I wanted to say. I will spare you, those of you who are still awake, and stop here.

    until next month,

    r.christopher hailey
