I was listening to the radio the other day and usually it is just plain
crap. Well Saturday after noon I hear the beginning notes to Pull Me
Under. I let out a big "What the F$%k????". I almost wrecked my fiance's
car. I never thought I would ever hear DT on Baltimore's 98 rock ever
    again...

Just to clarify, Trixter and Firehouse aren't really 80's bands
considering both bands' first albums came out in 1990, believe it or
not. But Poison was definitely the kings of the make-up and poofy hair
in their day. Don't they have a new album coming out sometime this
year? I can't wait to get it. It seems as if virtually every band will
have an album out this year - QR, Fates Warning, Galactic Cowboys, Saigon
Kick, and even Slaughter and Poison (yes, I know there are a lot more
bands - I am using exaggeration). Most importantly, DT will (let us all
hope). All this talk of their new material is really making me anxious.

Someone posted earlier about how maybe the new QR will attract new
listeners who will then pick up their older stuff and become hooked. I
can definitely see QR attracting a wider audience because I heard some
people talking (who don't exactly share our musical tastes) about how
they heard the new QR album is supposed to be "cool." Well, let's take
this a step further. What if these people buy the older stuff, become
hooked, and then hear of a band that these other QR fans seem to like
called Dream Theater. At about this time of enlightenment DT releases
their new album and sales go through the roof and DT becomes the leaders
of the world with Take The Time as the international anthem. A man can
    dream, can't he?

Yeah, I noticed that; can't win 'em all. :)

Yeah, what was the deal with that guy? He had a very strong "I'm much more
important than you will ever be" attitude. Mike seemed just as pissed about
herding everyone outside as the we (the fans) were.

Visiting Toronto from California on business. What luck to catch Portnory
    doing his drumming!!!!

Totally awesome experience, I must say. I can't even remember what I said to
Mike at the autograph table. I think it was something like "bluah boublh
abhbhal buahlbha blahb honor to meet you hboa bhahob aohb anbonalehv bhaon".

I was the moron who asked Mike to sign my I&W CD liner notes thingy as "To
Johnny, Guess What, Chicken Butt!!! -MP". It's a long running joke I have with
a friend of mine back in California, who's just as fanatical about DT as I am.
He's going to owe me, big time! :)

That's all. Kinda pitiful for my first post to ytsejam in quite a long time,
    but oh well.

As do I. I thought I'd made that whole major Rush-head thing abundantly
clear (then again, I HAVE been gone a while). In any event, "Caress of
Steel" is one of my least favorite Rush albums, but it's still probably one
of my 50 favorites in the history of history. It's just that "Hemispheres,"
for example, would probably be in my personal top 10.

    And some other, random-type stuff:

Ah-ha! A band that someone here likes that I don't! I've got bad memories
of Lilian Axe, man, playing with a friend's band that was just much, much
better. One of those nights when the opener just smoked the headliner. To
    each his own....

Live as emotionless: Can't say that I agree. That's one area in which I'd
say Live is very, very strong -- they're tremendously INTO their music and
what they're saying. I don't always agree with what they're saying, but the
intensity of the music is first-rate.

I saw that Race on TV the other night (replay)...what a joke,
The first lap wasn't even over and there must have been 5 or 6
drivers already out of the race. That first turn was sad
    though.

Man, I could have *sworn* I saw that cd. I didn't check too
closely, so I could have been mistaken, plus there were a million
ads in the place for the Orion Studios show, so maybe that snuck

You schmucks coming down from Philly or wherever for the Orion shows
should check out this store I am talking about. It's not very far

e-mail me privately and I'll find out for sure.

Sunday morning I heard QR's new one, "Sign of the Times", on the radio
(right after Rush's "Time Stand Still" if you can believe it), and I do
believe that I'm going to have to go against the majority opinion here and
say I liked it first-listen. "Heretic!" What, I only... "And that was
    your *first* mistake!"

So anyway, after attending the Metallica show the other night, I've come up
with a few "theories". Some might find these a little "controversial". To
those of you easily alarmed, please hit page down...

    (1) Metallica fans are, on average, less intelligent, or at least,
    courteous, than Rush fans.
Basis: I bought tickets for both shows at the same West Coast Video. The
Rush line, everyone had exact change ready, and knew what sort of seats they
wanted. Most of the line got floor seats, me seventh row. For 'Tallica,
there were people standing up at the door with only twenties in their hand
saying "What, there's *two* kinds of seats?!" come ticket-sale-time roll
'round. Plus, Rich in my Drawing class, the kid who amuses himself by
making farting noises, laughing at plastic bags blowing across a field, and
punching his twin, is a Metallica fan. Point proven.

    (2) Dream Theater fans are more loyal than Metallica fans.
Basis: No surprise. Perhaps it was the man behind me screaming "YOU SUCK!!!
YOU FUCKIN' SUCK!!! YOU FUCKIN' SELL-OUTS!!! YOU FUCKIN' SUCK!!!". And
this man paid for a ticket.

    Call me Einstein...

Oh, yeah, the point to this message... Are there any reliable Internet
vendors that would carry stuff like Angra/Stratovarius/etc. with similar
ordering systems to places like CDworld and CDNOW? Now I realize big-time
prog-vendors may be an oxymoron, but there's got to be *one*.

One last question, would anybody be willing to dub me a copy of the '95
Birch Hill Holidays show. I'm one of the handful that missed that tree. I
could trade something off my meager list o' boots, or blanks. One of my
kidneys? What do I need *two* for anyway?

A-number-one-thanks to anyone who can help me out on any of my
    above-listed-help-out-fronts...

Is this a hard to find in stores? It's sounds interesting.

You're so right, though, Kev. Brian is what drew me to Queen. Brian IS
Queen! Freddie happened to sing for the band :) One of my all-time
favorites is Liar from Queen I (I think, maybe Queen II :).

They certainly became an insitution. If you're at a football game and
you hear that beating drum sound at the beginning of "we will rock you",
do you think of Queen or do you think of picking up the phone to order
    Dominoes delivery? :)

If anyone runs any Jeff Beck stuff with Cozy, I recommend immediate
consumption :) Rough 'N Ready comes to mind. Very 70's sounding, rocks!
A little funky, too, with Max Middleton on keys as I recall...

    THE RIDE/THE HOSTS!/THE TOWN:

So, I ended up making the 10 hour drive to Toronto to see MP's clinic.
It wasn't that bad as I stopped in Syracuse at the nephew's pad for the
night. You damn Canadiens better do something about gas prices up there
or I'll have to mount a spare tank on the truck :) phew!!!

My nephew and I met up with Rick&Sue at a nearby TexMex place and
inhaled a few Marguerita's before heading over to the convention center.
I want to thank Rick/Sue for their hospitality!! I felt like we've known
each other for a while, eh? :) They were so good about getting us into
town easily, suggesting cool places to hang out... You can count on us
    returning for a longer stay!

    THE CLINIC:

The room looked to have somewhere between 100 or so people in there.
Pumped up people, that is! The show was a little late in starting. You
could hear Mike's voice off-mic in the speakers. Something wasn't set up
properly or whatever. Not a problem for me, though. Well, the curtains
open, Mike appears, and everyone is now "IN THE ZONE" :)

Mike asks the drummers to raise their hands. A small number of hands go
up. Mike decides that instead of boring many in the audience with
technical aspects of drumming, that it would be more appropriate to just
jam. I didn't see/hear any arguments from the audience :)

He wasn't able to get a soundcheck in before the start of the clinic, so
we had to "suffer" through the soundcheck... As if, during just about
any song, he doesn't already hit every piece of equipment!

Not being a drummer and not wanting to spoil it, I don't feel it
appropriate for me to comment on what Mike said pertaining to the
arrangment of his drums and music in general. Look at it this way: if
you wanna know, you'll just have to go the clinic yourself :)

Anyway, Mike proceeds to make everyone numb with the new stuff. I'll
tell ya, the sound just keeps getting heavier and heavier, plenty of
changes in time signature, and the sounds just really pull you in. Not
sure if it was on Lines in the Sand or Just Let me Breathe, but there's
something he does (remember, I'm not a drummer, so be nice to me :)
where he is just fucking with the very fibre of time itself! He's only
hitting the snare twice, but it's WHEN he hits it that makes it work so
well. If I had a sample, I could give you a time index. I wish I had the
theory to explain it. It's the kind of stuff I really get off on,
similar to the part right after "I remember a time" on ACoS.

In short: ***** You're going to like the new stuff!!! *****

I was at the Strand for the Fix for '96 shows (still have the tracks on
my arms to prove it :), so I'd already heard some of the new stuff. Of
course, the mix in this type of environment is so much more controlled
than it was at the Strand. As a result, I heard things I'd never heard
before. He played parts of Erotomania. This was great as I had heard it
at the JP clinic last year, so it was interesting to hear it again but
with the drum sound up front.

At the end, several in the audience were heard requesting Metropolis, so
Mike satisfied us by playing the instrumental section in the middle. A
ca Fuckin' Pella. I found myself singing the guitar and keyboards, he
    played it so well!!

    POST GAME ACTIVITIES:

    > From: "Greg R. Lee" <greg@aix.can.ibm.com>

Greg, sorry I missed you...next time I'm up there for sure...

    > The ding dongs spelled Dream Theater wrong -- the usual "re" offense.

I just had to get Mike's autograph right near the "re" article promoting
the clinic :) Nice Majesty symbol next to the name!

We weren't able to hook up for brews afterwards. I imagine Mike needed
to hang with the sponsors,etc... I'm just happy to have been able to
have been there. It may not have been a CD; but for an hour or so, it
definitely sent me to a place I needed to be.

In closing this long-winded post, I just want to say that Mike is one
heck of a nice guy in person. Very personable! He stuck around
afterwards to sign many autographs and for pictures (can't wait for 'em,
Rick :) I know it sucks that the group is having problems getting the CD
out. We just gotta be happy with what we get, though. For me, this was
an up close and in person mini concert. So at least there are Dream
Theater *sounds* out there right now. I'm happy... Looking forward to
all the reviews from the European jammers. There should be some happy
campers here real in a month or so :)

Best quote of the night was during the return trip from Toronto:

"I think the exit labeled BRIDGE TO THE USA was the one we wanted" :O

    Has anybody seen the bridge?

    Regards,

    Jon
