Hey all.. anyone have a spare copy of LATM they could sell me. I've been
all over my local stores and haven't found it. Just picked up WDADU last
night. Forgot how much I like some of the songs on that CD.

    Hey, guys.
Steve from Tucson has returned after a long abscence. I have
once again obtained E-mail service and am at the ready to participate in
the stimulating conversation that is the YtseJam Mailing List. However,
I do not, at the present, remember how in the hell to sign up again.
Anyone wanna throw me a rope on this one? I'd appreciate it...like,
    alot, and stuff.

I suppose this has been discussed on the jam before but what are everyones
favorite Dream Theater songs off each album they have (bootlegs included).
I'm just totally curious. Mine are:

Images And Words: Learning To Live tied with Metropolis
I think that LTL has one of the most interesting and complex
structures I've ever heard and I love it while Metropolis for some reason,
    really gets me pumped.

Live At The Marquee: Another Hand
            This floors Charlies version...enough said.

Awake- Space Dye Vest tied with 6:00
SDV has to be the most beautiful piece I ever heard recorded by any
band in my life whilst 6:00 is another very cool faster paced DT song.

    The Silent Man- Eve
Quite possibly the best Dream Theater instrumental I have ever
    heard in my life.

A Change Of Seasons- The Big Medley
As much as I love the title track, I have to say the demo versions
are better. The Big Medley is amazing...just the way they pieced all the
songs together in a 10 minute track.

Scenes From A Memory- Oliver's Twist
Pull Me Under is an awesome track and although, it is missing
something without the lyrics, its none-the-less interesting to hear. I also,
strangely enough, love the George Winston track, Autumn Moon that was put on
by accident. Good ending to the disc even if it isn't DT.

    Thats all

    Hey all:

I was at the December 5 "Fix For '96" show at Mulcahey's on Long Island.
It was an amazing show and I've been looking for anyone with a boot from
the "Fix" that would be willing to hook me up with a copy. I haven't seen
anything on the DT newsgroup for the past 5 months, so I decided to
re-subscribe to the Jam after a long absence. And I see 5 posts about
"fix" boots. If anyone can help me, I'd be really appreciative. I don't
have much to trade, but maybe we can work something out.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

98 Rock was a great station in the early 90s. I used to go visit Mojoman
(remember him? :) at Loyola College just to listen to the radio. That
was the first place I heard such bands as Scatterbrain and School of
Fish. Then it started to suck a couple of years later. Glad it's back,
cause Syrinx and I will need good tunes for our trek this Saturday to see
    Finneus. :)

Hey, I'll be home and I don't think I have anything to do that night (Saturday). Any NY jammers up for going? I'm dying to see a prog band live. You just don't get that in Vermont.

LOL! That reminds me of a story. I saw the Rolling Stones at Shea Stadium in 1989. I was way up in the nosebleeds. The stage was out in the outfield, and I was behind the Mets dugout. Oh, well. Anyway, sometime during Living Colour's set, these two guys showed up, and sat in the row in front of us. They each had armfuls of merchandise - hats, t-shirts, whatever. They sat down, each smoked a joint, and left ten minutes later. They didn't even *see* the Stones! Forty bucks *each* to load up on gear and get high. I just don't get it.

I'll try again, but I don't know if I can say anything different than what I said last time.

Somewhere in the back of my melon, there is a list of 5 or 6 qualities of music. Just about everything I enjoy listening to exhibits at least one of these. But there are two - heavy, thrashy guitar playing and melodic, hook-laden singing with great harmonies - that never seem to go together for whatever reason. The GalCows have both in abundance. They're great speed players, and they get that sort of old-Anthrax metal groove going. But then, just when you think they're going to launch into a screamfest, this amazing chorus comes with some of the most beautiful vocal harmonies you've ever heard. This seems like it would probably be out of place, or not flow well, but GC's music is seamless. They've also got some hilarious lyrics (ala Scatterbrain) that just crack me up.

    I hope that helps.

Oh, man...you know not the waters in which you swim....

    10. Vixen- they broke up before they could be dropped. And I would hardly put them on this list. They only had a couple of hits. Their hair and make-up were out of control, however.

    9. Scorpion (yes they lasted into the 90's but barely) Actually, they are not only still together, but they still have a record deal and had one well after grunge hit.

    8. Winger > I'll grant you that grunge (specifically Beavis and Butthead) destroyed Winger.

    7. Trixer Their self-titled debut was released in 1990 and their hair was just normal, long-hair. Interestingly, they were wearing flannel in their videos and on stage LONG before Pearl Jam did.

    > 6. Warrant (the new stuff is cool, but face it they just aren't as popular > as they were in the 80's)

I'm confuses with your running order. You're ranking Warrant as being dropped quicker than Trixter? Warrant put out three albums w/ Columbia before they were dropped (interestingly, their last and best album for that label, Dog Eat Dog, went gold at the same time that grunge exploded). Trixter got dropped after two albums.

    > 5. Firehouse

Surprisingly, Firehouse is still w/ their original label. They've put out four albums. But I'll grant you that their hair, in the early days, was pretty sad.

    > 4. Nelson

Their debut album "After The Rain" was released in 1990.

    3. Motley Crue (they were alright in the 80's, broke up and amazingly are > back together > Motley never broke up. They put out a self-titled album w/ former The Scream vocalist John Corabi, who, since Vince has rejoined the band, is now working w/ ex-KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick. And again, they are still w/ their original label.

    2. Def Leppard (they just suck, but give the one armed drummer Rick Allen > some credit for carrying on through his ordeal)

Adrenalize went multiplatnium and that was in 1992. Their greatest hits album has been in Billboard's Top 200 ever since it was released (for the most part). And again, they are still with their label and put out the excellent "Slang" last year.

    > 1. Poison. (look at them now! Shaved heads and all!) > First of all, let's get one thing straight: Poison do NOT have shaved heads. Brett Michaels shaved his head for a movie he wrote, directed, produced and starred in called "A Letter From Death Row." The scene in question occurs when Michaels' character gets attacked in prison and the inmates shave his head (for real). Since then, he has grown his hair long again. All the other members of the band still have long hair, except for bassist Bobby Dall, who just cut his hair. And for the record, Poison's "Native Tongue" was released in 1993 and went gold. The band was only released from Capitol Records in 1996. So I'd say that although the band's popularity is not what it used to be, they have obviously survived alternative and are going to release a new album w/CC Deville in late '97 or '98.

As much as I've enjoyed this, I don't think it really suitable for the jam. You should check out the 80s metal list.

Hey Pat, it's funny you should mention hearing DT on 98 ROck this weekend. I think you said you heard PMU on Saturday. Well, on Sunday around 3pm-5pm I was driving with my brother and I heard the DJ say "ANd coming up, some Dream Theater by request". Whoa cool!! I was almost home by that time and I feel stupid for not remembering to go in the house and turn the radio on to see what they actually played. PMU I would guess.

The last time I heard any DT on 98 ROck was when Awake came out. Actually, I can't really be sure if I heard any of the tracks but one day I DID hear "And that was Caught In A Web from the new Dream Theater album". THat's pretty cool. When 103 was still the Underground, they played DT all of the time. They even made I&W's the "cool album of the month" (or something like that) for 2 months in a row in early '93.

One time I heard ACOS on the radio after the Greaseman and before that Furell sports guy's show on JFK 1300. They played it from the begining right up until James should have started singing but then it looped back for more instrumental stuff. I couldn't believe I was actually hearing ACOS on the radio!!!

Does anyone know when the pix of the Fix for '96 shirts will be added to the web site?

Can someone give me the address for that web site that was selling the DT mousepads?

..well, new to me! I just picked up some new CDs over the weekend, and I must say these all kick serious ass. None are actually "new", but I still feel the need to review them for the people who still haven't checked out stuff by these bands. I figure a simple "they rock" isn't good enough, so if you want, read on, I've briefly reviewed all of 'em. Remember, please, that all statements herein are strictly my opinion.

Megadeth "Train of Consequences": Yeah, this is a single, BUT...the song "Crown of Worms" kicks butt. My first reaction was humming the ol' Diamond Head song "The Prince" 'cause the main riff is so similar, then I realized that Sean Harris from DH helped write this sucker w/ Mustaine. It's nice n' fast, really thrashy, and has some good guitar solos from (I'm guessing) Marty Friedman. As for the live takes, Nick Menza reaffirmed himself in my book as a drummer with a ton of endurance. There's quite a bit of double bass and it's really fast. I don't like the live mix, tho...On "Anarchy..." you can't hear the guitars very well for most of the song. Other than that, this one kicks butt.

Galactic Cowboys "Galactic Cowboys": What can I say, the CD starts off with a mooing cow. How can you beat that?! The song "I'm Not Amused" is pretty much stuck in my head. Very good song. This band sounds heavier than I expected. Thrashier too. I think I like the singer and the guitar tone the best. Do I hear an 8-string bass? The bass player has one in the vid for "I'm Not Amused", but I can't tell an 8-string bass from my left butt cheek, so I don't really know. The only downpart to the CD is that it has its long slow parts and it can bore me. Oh well. Maybe I just need more time with it. Overall, a very good buy.

Galactic Cowboys "Space in Your Face": I gotta back up D-Man here, it's excellent. Sounds like Pantera with a good singer (i.e. one that doesn't puke in every song). Very melodic, heavy, fast and varied. They go from fast thrash to groovin' blues really suddenly and smoothly and right back, and that's only the first song!! "You Make Me Smile" has a real catchy chorus, and it makes me wonder why this band isn't more widely known. I love the guitar tone. These guys remind me of old time Anthrax. They have a real comedy to their music, but it's not silly shit. A good example is the song "No Problems" where it's really fast (kinda punky too) metal and then it goes to this light & happy chorus where they sing about having no problems. That's just so damn funny! I love it! :)

Stuart Hamm "The Urge": Satriani plays bass too, huh?! That's what this CD sounds like to me. Kinda cool to have Eric Johnson playing on some songs. The highlights for me are "The Hammer" which sounds very Satch-like (only on bass), and "Quahogs Anyone?" which is a live take. QA is an instrumental all on the bass, and my fav part is when he starts ripping out the Linus and Lucy theme on the bass (Hello, Mr. Hoey?!). Yes, ALL PARTS at the same time!!! Kicks butt. His tone is really treble-y and chorus-y. It's pretty much the same as his live tone. Bottom line--if you're a fan of Satch, Vai, Johnson, Hoey, etc., you're gonna like this a lot.

Fates Warning "Parallels": Not my first Fates CD, but this is definitely different from the only other one I have ("The Spectre Within", 1985). Whoa! I see why DT likes to tour with these guys! Can we say proggy? Can we say........Queensryche? Nah, just kiddin' ;)~ They're very good, heavy when necessary, melodic throughout, progressive, and the guitar harmonies remind me very much of Judas Priest and Queensryche. They're not as glammy as I would've expected from a metal CD from '91. They have a lot of substance in their music and their lyrics, and they have a lot of talent. The drummer has some neat chops in various places and he seems to play everything in the perfect way. The only drawbacks I can see are that the CD isn't as heavy as it could be. Kinda sounds to me like they're holding back the distortion a touch on certain songs, but it all adds to make the music a touch different. Kinda reminds me of the ol' soundtrack to the 8-bit Nintendo game "Strider", only better. On a side note, that game rocked!

Extreme "III Sides to Every Story": This CD is the "Oh!!! THEY played that riff" CD. Almost every song reminds me of my freshman year in HS ('92-'93). I haven't gotten a good enough listen to judge the whole CD yet, but it's very catchy, and Nuno sounds wonderful on it. I really like "Rest in Peace" to start with, and I'm sure I'll love the whole CD after I get in a good listen.

Savatage "Handful of Rain": I decided to save the best for last. I bought this CD because I liked Alex Skolnick's work w/ Testament, but I wasn't prepared for what I got. This band is incredible. Singer sounds like Flotsam & Jetsam's singer to me, and the rest of the band is excellent. Very heavy, very thrashy, and the piano parts laid down by Jon Oliva are just so heavy in their own way. I never get bored w/ this one, it keeps me interested. Personal favorites: "Taunting Cobras", a great thrash song, and "Alone You Breathe", possibly the best song I've heard in 1997. AYB is a great power ballad written in the memory of Chris Oliva. It's very passionate, and it really touched me. That's incredibly rare. The last song to do that to me was by a christian band named Nouveaux. On the same lines, in AYB, the lines "I am the way, I am the light" are sung EXACTLY the same way as a common christian church song called "We Are One Body". Ironically enough, the lines in that song are "I am the way, the truth, the life. I am the final sacrifice..." I wonder if they picked this up off of that song. Hmm...

Sorry about the length of this, but I felt the need... Laterz,

Peace be with you and God bless, ~Vince

Hi Everyone! This is my first post. I have been lurking for some time now though. When I went on my spring break I forgot to bring some DT home with me. So I was suffering DT withdrawal halfway through my break. I decided to go out and buy a Savatage CD, having heard good things about them on the jam. I got "Handful of Rain," and it was the best musical experience I've had since Awake. I, like Shane, am wondering which Savatage CD I should get next? I've heard good things about "Dead Winter Dead" from friends. Keep Smilin'! Joe
