a starting point for those interested in hearing GC. BTW, anyone
notice how that sorta bluesy part of the title track from SIYF
(the part with the guitar solo, I believe) kinda sounds like part of
Floyd's "Money?" Well, I think it does :).

Hi, folks I haven't been posting at all this year, but now I'm finally up to date with my work, so maybe there's a chance for us to spend some time together, like we used to. Let's hope so!
Those of you who remembered, I tried to get in contact with Swedish/Scandinavian jammers, mainly for obtaining the X-mas CD. But also for upcoming occasions. And one major of those is approaching, namely the Fix'97 ! Are there any of you that are thinking in your wet dreams that you are going down to Germany to see any of those concerts? For me this is almost certain, since I've been chatting this matter to a.o: Lars"ORION"Karlsson, of the DT FAQ; and he's really hooked on it! So for us it will probably be the BREMEN-gig, maybe even the BONN. So to you Scandinavians; are you going? then, let's go together!
And to you German jammers; which way is the best to obtain tickets? Jason Breitweg tried to lurk something, but as far as I know he hasn't found anything quite yet, and I'm really embarrased using my not-so-good semi-German these days! So, please, Hilfe Freunden ! Do you even know of any cheap (=unexpensive) place to stay for the night, let me know, will ya?
Any news about having Fatez opening? I recall they've got Kevin Moore, AND that they are releasing a CD pretty soon. In my wildest dreams I see TWO Fixes in ONE !!!!!! Man, would that be great! First hearing what FW sounds like with my God on Keys, and even more pre-releasing tracks... WWOOWW

For those seeking Savatage: Just keep in mind that their earlier stuff is a lot different from their newer stuff. There earlier stuff is heavier. I personally like all of it, but it may throw some people if it comes unexpectedly. Remember that Jon Oliva sings on their first 7 albums and Zach Stevens on their last three (Edge of Thorns, Handful of Rain, Dead Winter Dead). Jon Oliva sings a couple of tracks on Dead Winter Dead so that would be a good place to start to sample both vocalists, and besides, it's a concept album, how can you go wrong?

I listened through the Majesty demos and have a few stray thoughts that must be expressed.
First, the music is all right for a sophomoric effort. However, if DT had followed the route of "Your Majesty" rather than "March of the Tyrant" they would have ended up as... Winter Rose?
Second, they were QUITE right in booting out Chris Collins. Sounds like David Bowie trying to be Geoff Tate. Given their propensity for firing their vocalists for better ones, the next step is (obviously) acquisition of Luciano Pavoratti.
Third, who wrote those cheesy lyrics?
All in all it's an interesting listen. Immediately I wanted to do a cover of "Your Majesty" and "Vital Star". Anyone know where I can get sheet music for this? =) Yeh right.
I'm actually quite impressed. When they were recording, I was sixteen and dreaming. Eleven years later, I'm still (mostly) dreaming, but eleven years of practise has not got me nearly as far as it's gotten Dream Theater.
I think an interesting idea would be for DT to borrow some guest musicians. Not replace any members, you know. Like Crowded House did for that "I want you to want me" song -- there's a guest vocalist. Maybe they could borrow Satriani? Neil Peart? Pavoratti'd better not get too close, he could be in danger of having to sing prog music. heh. I'd really like to hear a bass voice, or a good female on one of their songs. I'm thinking NOT Lou Reed but maybe Johnny Cash, NOT Linda Ronstadt but perhaps Bonnie Tyler. "You could by my Vital Star..." no, no, definitely NOT Madonna.
oh well. Just taking a break from organizing tribute stuff, God there's a lot to sort out.

For the people who wanted to know which Savatage discs to get, heres my recommendations of each:
The Dungeons Are Calling/Sirens: if your into a very heavy Savatage, check this out. It features Jon Oliva on vocals who has a much higher but equally as great voice. His voice goes so well with the heaviness of the music.
Power Of The Night- same as above but features one powerballad that deserves mention called "In The Dream".
Fight For The Rock- the album everyone hates...its much more glam-ish but still has its moments and the drums sound great on the disc. If you buy it, be prepared for shock.
Hall Of The Mountain King- the heaviest Savatage to date but also incorporates a progressive style into their music rather than just playing metal like TDAC, Sirens and POTN.
Gutter Ballet- very diverse comparable to HOR but with Jon on vocals. The album has everything...ballads (When The Crowds Are Gone, Summers Rain), heavy stuff (The Unholy, Of Rage And War), acoustic pieces (Silk And Steel) to an almost gothic-feeling Hounds.
Streets- if you like Dead Winter Dead, you'll love this...another rock opera (in my opinion, much better than DWD) about a rock star drug dealer living on the streets. Awesome s..t here.
Edge Of Thorns- this is more of a hard rock album but with great talent put into it. Criss Olivas last and Zak Stevens first. Criss left us with an amazing set of work.
Dead Winter Dead- rock opera, lots of slower stuff but does include a couple heavier pieces.

Ghost In The Ruins- live album from 1987-1990. For the fans of the heavier stuff.
Doctor Butcher- 25 bucks...Jon's new band...VERY reminiscent of early Savatage for those who miss it.

This song also touched me. But then again a lot of songs do, such as every DT song, a lot or some of Queensryche, Fates Warning, Galactic Cowboys, Rush, Lillian Axe, and even Night Ranger, Firehouse, and Stryper. Of course some songs "touch me" by giving me a rush (no pun intended) such as CIAW, Helloween's "Kings Will Be Kings," Stryper's "The Rock That Makes Me Roll," or Rush's "Jacob's Ladder." How about it, jammers? What are some other touching songs out there? Here are some of mine:

Has anyone else heard of the Swedish band Morgana LeFay? My brother has their CD "Maleficium" and it rocks! They are heavy with some powerful and intricate grooves. So how's the singer? He is very reminiscent of Jon Oliva of Savatage. I couldn't believe it the first time I heard it. I had to keep reminding myself that this was not Savatage. The music has a quicker tempo than most of Savatage's stuff, and I have now learned to distinguish the difference between vocalists. There are tracks where he doesn't sound like Jon Oliva, but others where he seems to belt out a Jon Oliva-type note. And "Maleficium" is a concept album of sorts, so it is pretty good album. I don't know how easy it is to get their stuff, but several mail order places carry them.
