Criss Oliva died on October 17, 1993 in a car accident after a drunk driver hit him and his wife head on. His wife has recovered, I believe but Criss Oliva sadly died. But he left a legacy of amazing music behind.

Well, the bassist is Pete Way, who was in a little band called UFO. Hence the stupid name of the group "waysted."

I think it may be hard to find in the states nowadays. I am not sure. It is a really good album, though. I know I have seen a live cd "live at brixton" I think, by Brian May for sale in the bins at Best Buy. Imported from England, naturally.
I am listening to Black Sabbath's remastered "Born Again" right now. This is just a weird combo with three original Sabs (Iommi, Butler and Ward) playing with Ian Gillan. Just odd. Man, does Geezer have a *nasty* bass tone or what?
So 98Rock is back to playing DT, eh? I remember back when PMU was the rage, that was the breaker of the month or whatever they called it, but 103 underground was a MUCH better radio station. I even heard Fifth Angel on there. Too bad it' now a crappy "free form alternative" station. I remember hearing PMU and wondering, when they said it was Dream Theater, if it was the same DT that I remembered from having the WDADU cassette. The music sounded right, but that singer! He was no Charlie Lee -er, I mean- Dominici.

Well my jamming friends, have I found something kewl...
I was perusing through the local Wherehouse (which I have determined is now a used CD store that just happens to also sell new CDs), in the "budget" CD bin, you know, where they sell the promos and stuff that nobody wants for $0.99...
Anyway, I happened to spot this interesting CD cover with these scientist dudes standing around one of them Newton's Balls thingies (you know, conservation of momentum...balls on strings which stay in place when you drop one and the one on the other side takes off...boy, am I ramblin'...). Along the top of the cover was the name "WORLD TRA" with the rest covered up by that yellow used sticker. So I flip it over and see these four semi-hair endowed men attempting to look "happy tough". I checked the date...1989. The label...PolyGram. The songs...around 5 mins per. Could it be...?
I checked it out. Mind you, I do not have the latest World Trade from Magna Carta -- _Euphoria_, I think -- but I had heard somebody say that they sound a lot like Yes. Well, these guys do, too. Did I find an elusive debut CD from World Trade, or am I imagining things?
I happened to swing by another semi-local Wherehouse and perused their budget CDs (ok, secret's out...now you know why I have over 300 CDs), and spotted a Lillian Axe CD, _Poetic Justice_ and gave it a listen. Kewl stuff. Bought it. It's a 1992 release and sounds like a lot of other 80s-90s metal that you may have heard, but for some reason it sticks better. Production? Musicianship? Both? BTW, this one has the much talked about (at least in the last 'Jam) Axe songs "See You Someday" and "The Promised Land". Good schtuff.
OK, that's enough. Back to those killer 4 page essays. Only two left.

Hey Dig! NIce suggestion, and also props to everyone else who sang their praise for Galactic Cowboys: Space In Your Face. This stuff is pretty damn cool. I thought when y'all said they had senses of humor in their stuff I thought it might be stupid, but now I see what you mean (that part in NO Problems is great, going from the dark subject matter to the happy-go-lucky chorus is pretty damn cool), plus their lyrics are damn good too, takling topics like abortion are pretty damn tough for most bands, but they do it quite well. They sound like a mix of so many different things, I mean their guitar work reminds me of Metallica/Megadeth/DT. But their harmonizing vocals remind me of some Shadows Gallery and Spock's Beard. All together a pretty good buy (I have no idea why it was so cheap... $5.99 for all their CD's). Now that I have heard this stuff, where to next? What is another good album of thier's? I will even take just suggestions for other bands too. Also, what's the best to start with for Savatage?

Savatage is indeed a cool band. For everyone that keeps asking what happened to Chris; he was killed by a drunk driver back in '93, an unfortunate loss. for more check out the FAQ at: http://www.winternet.com/~sentinel/savatage/ It's the official web page. Has anyone else noticed that the radio stations in S. California suck donkey? The poor excuse for a rock station (95.5) plays Crap. I've been dying to hear a real band on the radio down here. Just a little DT, or 'tage, I want Dio, and GnR, and all those other real bands from way back when back on the radio. The only thing playing down here is the same ten top 40 songs over and over again. I think I'm going to take my stereo up to the roof of my dorm hook up some really big speakers, and blast DT into the next state. So if you hear DT and your radio is off, now you'll know where it's coming from. So in conclusion, alternative crap is dead, bring back the real straight ahead rock like it used to be. And long live DT. Hey, if I win the lottery, I'll make my own record label, and get DT in the studio ASAP:)

Man, oh, man. Youse guys need to get Edge of Thorns. (It's probably my favorite). Lotsa great tunage as Handful of Rain, but it has Criss on it which makes all the diff. (RIP Criss). If that intro piano on the first track doesn't catch you from the start, somethin's wrong with y'all. Highlights of EoT: Edge of Thorns, Damien, Miles Away, Sleep, All that I Bleed. I dunno, the only song I don't like is Scraggy's Tomb. Makes me think of Scooby Doo. Weird. The rest kick some serious a$$!

I just got a few listens of the new Fates Warning. I must say they are trying some new styles in A Pleasant Shade of Gray (APSOG).

A Pleasant Shade of Gray marks a new chapter in the Fates Warning story. Not only is the album one song, clocking in at over fifty five minutes, but a couple of new muisicans were enlisted to help out the Fates Warning nucleus of guitarist/ongwriter Jim Matheos, vocalist Ray Alder and Mark Zonder on drums. Ex-Armored Saint bassist Joey Vera was brought in to round out the rhythm ssection with Zonder while Kevin Moore from Dream Theater was recruited for his expertise on keyboards. Matheos wrote the album from his home in New Hampshire after Fates Warning completed their tour for the 1994 release, Inside Out. A Pleasant Shade of Gray reflects the changes that the band has gone through over the years with its variety of styles and the maturity of the song writting and musicianship. Parts of the composition are reminiscent of vintage Fates warning from the No Exit or Parallels period while others section border on industrial, progressive rock and even classical. The album has a huge, atmospheric sound comparable to the likes of Yes or Pink Floyd thanks to the production of Terry Brown, who is famous for his work with Rush. All of the actual album artwork is also done by Hugh Syme who has done the last three Fates Warning covers as well as most of Rush's. The Progression that Fates Warning exhibits on this, thier latest masterpiece, can also be compared to the changes a certian Canadian trio has undergone over the years. It is this continuing development of Fates' sound that makes this the most anticipated and ambitious release of thier illustrious career. ------------------------
After listing to the disc, I can not help but wonder the influence that Kevin Moore may have had on this recording. The indusrtial sounds of some sections may indicate that he had a good deal of influence on the sound and writting. There are also a few sections that remind me of Dream Theater during the WDADU period. There is plenty of the Fates Warning sound that we all know and love to keep Fates fans happy.
I think they make have shot themselves in the foot by Making it only one song. It is indexed somewhat but not to the level where your standard DJ could take advantage of it. There are some pieces that I think would do well on the radio if given the chance.
This release is due out 4/22/97.

These days it seems to be harder to find an old metal combo where Cozy HASN'T been in than those he's been. He has also played for Gary Moore, Cinderella (as a session drummer for Long Cold Winter), Black Sabbath etc. I understand he also has a couple of solo albums (a song called "Bangin' on Drums" pops into my mind) under his belt.

Since Jens Johansson and Joerg Michael only appear on the latest album, the logical next step would be "Fourth Dimension", the album that introduced Timo Kotipelto as a lead singer. The older stuff isn't exactly the same band (Tolkki sings, he's improved all the time thru the years but he's nowhere near Kotipelto's range, but then, who is?). All the albums are all right though. Their new one, "Visions" will be available soon, too. The Timo guys have also had some talks about a live album, which would be recorded on their tour in South America (Brazil, Chile, Argentina) in July. I urge all the Brazilian jammers to attend their gigs...DO NOT MISS THE GIGS!!!

This seems to be the eternal fate of Morgana LeFay. I'm not saying that Cygnus is calling them this, but all through their existence they have been called Savatage clones (check out the Savatage home page, especially the part where there are recommendations about bands for Sava fans). IMO this isn't true. I haven't heard "Maleficium" (the witch), which is called to be their masterpiece this far, but despite some similarities, ML do have a sound of their own. It's just the singer that sounds a wee bit too much like Jon Oliva at times.

What is this '80s hair metal nostalgia wave that's going on? Why isn't anyone pining for the decent bands of the '80s? Take Cinderella for example. Granted, they were a hair and makeup band when their first album came out, but they dropped the image soon enough and their second and third albums were pretty good. When they finally started making serious music (Still Climbing) as a serious band , no one cared anymore.
