The answer to this is yes, you should have bought it. Spock's Beard is the
best new prog band I have heard. I saw them at ProgFest '95, and they
stole the show. I have their CD "The Light," and it gets some serious
rotation in my CD player. I am going to get their new one as soon as funds
permit. But I can not say enough about these guys, but I will say this
little - they are the tightest band I have seen ever, and that was only
after being together a year or two!

I have to go on record and say that Lillian Axe is one of my all-time
favorite bands. They've put out five albums and every single one is
killer, with Poetic Justice being their masterpiece, IMHO. When you say
that it sounds like a lot of other "80s-90s metal," I have to disagree.
They have some definite prog influences and their lead guitarist is
classically trained, though I guess this becomes more apparent on the
next release, "Pyschoskitzophrenia" (or however you spell it). Also,
their lead guitarist, Stevie Blaze, my ALL TIME favorite lyricist. Sort
of like if you took the elevated prose that JP uses and combined it with
the rhythmic sense that KM used, that's what you've got. I hear the CD is
out of print now, so if you see it or any other Lillian Axe albums in a
used bin, if you like hard rock and are on this list, do not hesitate to
pick it up.

Umm..Yeah! It depends if you are interested in hearing some great
progressive rock (not metal) that takes influences from Pink Floyd, Gentle
Giant, and turns it into something modern and innovative sounding. It
basically takes the instruments of the 70's (mellotron, hammond organ,
moogs) and makes it sound 90's.
>What does it sound like?
I described them a few times on the jam, but I don't feel like typing it
over again. I'll send you my comments over email, and if you are not
convinced to buy it, I'll send tape a bunch of their songs and send it to
you free of charge. That way you will be able to decide for yourself.
That's how much I like 'em!
Walter.

True.

Nyet. Atco used to be a div of Atlantic. Atco ceased to exist when it changed names to EastWest.

Right. They (are/were?) owned by MCA, Music Cemetery of America.

They use Drop-D tuning on most of their songs...not all though. Plus a lot of distortion on the bass, and using an 8-string every once in a while might add to it.

I'm curious as to what you all think of WAAF's playlist and how it relates to the radio's lack of air time given to the stuff we want to hear. It seems that they are playing some of the groups mentioned on here (IME, VH, KORN, AIC, TOOL, MANSON, NUNO, MATALLICA:)
If *all* you're going to do in replying is rip on why Offspring/Bush/etc. sucks and therefore the station sucks, SAVE IT: I'm not interested... Or, if your obseesion is just too great, at least identify it in the Subject line so I can quickly skip over it :)
WAAF has pretty much been the one station around here (New England) that I've been loyal to since the 70's. While it's true that the bar has been lowered in general, AAF seems to have still held on to a little bit of what made them the frequency of choice :)
http://www.waaf.com/Playlist/currents.html
Oh yeah, while you're there, why not poke around till you find the request form and flood the mothers with DT requests? I've asked (nicely :) for PMU and UAGM this week. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If it's the same as 96, the opening bands would be *Einstein* and *Beth Hart Band*. You should hear Monument before DT goes on, though :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So how was NUNO at the Paradise, ytselocals?
The great thing about the Paradise (at least it used be) was that even if a show was sold out, you could go around to the back alley, grab a trash can for a seat and it catch a pretty loud sound coming through the walls :)

Sorry for making them seem like Savatage clones. I think I did use the name Savatage a bit too much in their description. They're not though. Their music has a sound all its own.

This is a topic that I, personally, appreciate.
I spend a great deal of my time trying to find music that makes an impact, because of some emotional "power" that it has. Through transcribing songs like these, I've come to realize that it's not so much the notes and the chord progressions that make the songs passionate... but rather the musicians' capabilities of turning a piece of wood, metal, and/or plastic into a voice. For me, Jason Becker will always be the supreme example of this. He's said that he always wanted to create music that would be emotional and dramtic, rather than just rock and roll. A lot of his inspiration came from movie soundtracks.
Some songs that accomplish this:
Quietus (From Fates Warning's No Exit... part of the IGoD epic) At Fates Hands (and Fates Warning's subsequent instrumental version, At Fates Fingers, with Kevin Moore) Jewel (Marty Friedman's Dragon Kiss, featuring Friedman and Becker) Altitudes (Off of Becker's Perpetual Burn... an album FULL of emotional guitar instrumentals) Empire (Jason Becker's Perspective. There's this one squeak sound he makes, that I just can't get over... I always make a face when I hear it... I've been trying to replicate that sound for months!) Scarborough Fair (Queensryche's version) To Live Forever (Pretty much every version of this song) Diary of a Madman (Mostly the solo and the end of the song... long live RR) Gutter Ballet (Savatage, of course) For the Love of God (Vai's Passion and Warfare) Winter (Tori Amos) Braveheart (The soundtrack)
There are so many more, but off the top of my head, these are a few good examples. Amazing, how mere tones and dynamics can touch something deeper than words ever could... it's like the direct route into the soul... heartfelt music. There is no more beautiful thing.

I'd like to throw my $.02 in here and say that Criss was a hell of a guy, too. He always remembered me when they came through here (DC) and would stop and talk for a while. A great loss.
As for songs that get to me...
Kayleigh - Marillion - I know it's not metal, but this song has the ability to reduce me to tears. The Killing Words - QR - 'nuff said Anybody Listening - QR - see above Nothing Left To Say - FW - Their best? Maybe.. except for Guardian - FW - talk about capturing feeling in a song... Scarred - DT - I still think this may be their best composition to date. Silence And Distance - Angra - Mellow, but powerful. Beyond The Realms Of Death - Judas Priest - if you've heard it, you know why it's here. When The Crowds Have Gone - Savatage - Jon's singing may not be perfect, but this has so much feeling. Burning Bridges - Crimson Glory - sad and haunting, with Midnight really feeling it.
I'm sure there's about fifty more, but that's all I can think of.

Actually, I got DoL and LitS both from CDEurope. They don't advertise them on their web page, but I had ordered something else from them, and they sent me a catalog of boot material on paper. So I was able to order both double CD sets. However, I've since ordered from them, and haven't gotten any paper catalogs, so perhaps they discontinued it, or maybe you have to request one. Also, now I can't remember if it was CDEurope, or CDConnection. A lot of help I've been here, but the point is, if you're really looking for boots, you have to dig some. DoL was the best $40 investment I ever made. The 1993 version of ACoS alone is worth it (plus you get Eve with samples).
