Brian Wherry was right about Chaos Theory being incredible... I can't wait
to get a hold of real recording from these guys! Talk about a _perfect_
opening group for DT... wow. In fact, in my severely deprived mental state
induced by waiting for the next DT album, I listened to the CT sound clips,
closed my eyes, and at times imagined I was hearing the new DT material...
Oh well. It was but a dream.
Catch this group if you can...

Don't Leave Me Alone was on the cassette of III sides to every story, but
not on the CD, which is a shame because it's a great song. Leave Me Alone
is on Punchline.

Well, here's my contribution to this thread:
Queensryche "Someone Else?" --preferably the full band version, but the
piano version is cool, too, since the song is best taken
along with "One More Time". This song, more than any
other, tells the story of my life. I know many of you
feel the same.
"Anybody Listening" --IS there anybody listening?
Extreme "God Isn't Dead?"
"Who cares?" --This would have been a great thing with
which to close out their career. Too bad it was followed
by "Punchline".
Rush "Closer to the Heart"
"Time Stand Still" --There's nothing better than good
friends, and you know who you are.
Dream Theater "A Change of Seasons" --"I'm sick of all you hypocrites
holding me at bay, and I don't need your sympathy to get
me through the day. Seasons change, and so can I. Hold
on, boy--no time to cry. Untie these strings--I'm
climbing down. I won't let them push me away." Mike
Portnoy must have been in tears to hear James sing this.
If I could not only write lyrics like these, but hear them
interpreted in this way...I have a lump in my throat just
thinking about it.
"Voices" --Wow. Growing up Catholic sucks. What a guitar
solo. The first time I heard it I cried like a baby.
Metallica "One" --the live version kicks much more ass than the
studio version.
"Fade to Black"
"To Live is to Die"
"My Friend of Misery" --let Jason write more!

I just ordered a CD from Dream Disc called "SILENT CRYING - Vol 1". My friend
said that it contains a collection of ballads from progressive metal bands.
Volume 2 is supposed to be coming out soon. It was only $12, so I got it with
my last order. Can't wait!

Hi everyone! I'm really excited to be telling you all about this new
band. They're from the San Fransisco Bay area. The name of the band is
Chaos Theory. The music is incredible. Heavy, complex, catchy,.... The
lineup is the same as Dream Theater: guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, and
vocals, and all of these guys are GREAT!
HI,
Do you live in the San Fran Bay area? I live in the South Bay and was
wondering if you have seen them perform and if so, where? Does anyone know
anymore about this band? Good ones, especially prog bands are hard to come
by around here.
Thanks for any help,

Raivo remarked:

Well, Raivo, "Leave Me Alone" *is* on _Punchline_. But on _III Sides to
Every Story_ is a song called "Don't Leave Me Alone." Very very powerful,
with a wonderful keyboard solo in the middle.
Always wondered what happened to the guys in the period between a
religious-overtoned, generally uplifting album like _III Sides_ and a
cynical, darker _Waiting for the Punchline_. (From "Please tell me God
isn't dead" to "There is no God". From "Don't Leave Me Alone" to "Leave Me
Alone").
Tell you what really bugs me about this, though -- "Don't Leave Me" only
appears on my tape version, not the CD version. Whafuck?
Cheers,
Phil

Jon DOES sing perfect! OK, maybe it's not perfect technically, but who
cares if he sings with SO much emotion that every time I hear the
fucking song, it makes me shiver!
Some really touching songs for me are:
Savatage (the kings in this area):
Gutter Ballet, When The Crowds Are Gone, Summer's Rain, Chance, Alone
You Breathe, This Isn't What We Meant, Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24, Not
What You See... (and I even haven't got Streets and Edge Of Thorns yet)
Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons, especially the 'I am sick of all
you hypocrites' part. I can listen to this song five hours long without
getting bored of it a second.
Stratovarius - Twilight Symphony, Call Of The Wilderness, (both from
Fourth Dimension, which is overall not a sad album, but these two songs
make the ending one of the saddest I've heard), Eternity, Forever.
Iron Maiden - The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, Alexander The
Great (even though these are very synthy, there is much emotion in it.
The ending to Loneliness especially rules!)
Therion - Some of the stuff of their album Theli. It's a really melodic
kind of death metal, sung by choirs, for instance parts of Cults Of The
Shadow, In The Desert Of Set and Nightside Of Eden.
Others include:
Gamma Ray - The Silence
Michael Kiske - Do I Remember A Life?
Queen - Innuendo
Brian May - Too Much Love Will Kill You

Get 'Twilight Time', or rather 'Fright Night' if you like good
old-fashioned classic metal with some classical influences. These albums
are both a bit less good than the others.
Get 'Dreamspace' if you like less heavy, sometimes psychedelic, stuff.
Get 'Fourth Dimension' if you like old progmetal like Queensryche.
Get 'Episode' if you like fast yet progressive and neoclassical stuff.
You can describe this album as a cross between DT, Helloween and Yngwie
J. Malmsteen. The last three albums are among the best ever made on
earth!

It's funny you should mentioned tha, Mike. Sunday, on the way home from
the Toronto clinic, I found myself obsessively rewinding this song
because of how much is actually going on in there. There's something
about the way this song is 'built'. The way the sound builds is
incredible and then, the section starting with "Do you feel you don't
know me anymore?" kicks in...Nuff said!
Actually, not nearly nuff said :) There needs to be digital information
on a sepearate track which controls the vehicle and makes it slow down
or pull over to the rest area, 'cause this could cause an accident!!!!
The guitar part from "And how come you don't understand me?" till "So
open your eyes" captivates me. JP is just all over the mutha fucka :)

I'd love to hear them cover Steely Dan's "Don't Take Me Alive". I think
JP would have fun with it. It'd be interesting to hear their
interpretation of it.

I noticed L.A. radio has gone straight in the toilet over the last few years.
KNAC is gone, KLSX is talk radio which sucks after Howard Stern's show ends,
and KLOS went "Alterntive." I guess KLOS is going back to a semi older format
like they had at one time, but it still sucks. Up here in N. Cal it's even
worse. San Francisco radio sucks blue whale's dad and the only half way decent
radio stations are in San Jose.

I only have the import of WDADU so I didn't buy the release by One Way,

GO SEE PRIVATE PARTS!!!!! If you haven't seen this movie then let me
tell you it's incredibly funny. I took my wife with me since I won tickets
to the premiere and she loved it; and she hates Howard. I've seen it three
times so far and will see it a bunch more before it leaves the theater &
will be there at my Laserdisc store the day of home release. For the
women, it's a real touching love story between Howard and his Wife and
I think it'll give you an understanding of why she's stuck with him for
all these years. For the Guys: Two words - KILBASA QUEEN! I can't say
more or it'll ruin the surprise, but it's worth the ticket price just
for that.

I agree. A friend of mine that didn't have a CD player had worn out a
tape of 'Awake' but had never heard this song, because it isn't on the
tape. When we were listening to the CD at my house, she said 'what song

We listened to it three more times.

First of all, this is in no way a flame directed at the guy who wrote this.
However, I laughed when I read it, because, as much as I love DT and pretty
much everything they do, these are two of the rare moments, and perhaps even
the only two moments in all the albums they've released, where I just cringe
at how bad I think it sounds.
First of all, ACOS. I got the studio release before I got my copy of
Subconcious, so it was the first exposure I had ever had to the song. And tob
be honest, I was never very impressed with it. That is, until I heard the
version recorded on Subconcious. I have never, for the life of me, been able
to understand even a little why the changed the lyrics to this song. I can't
explain why I don't like the new lyrics other than to say that they sound a
little... tacky. I know, this isn't a very objective word to back my argument
up with, but it justs seems that Portnoy's revised lyrics lack the lyrical,
eloquant, and maybe just a little vague quality that I love about JP, KM, and
especially JM's lyrics. These strike me as poetic, while the passage above,
while definately full of emotion, just sounds like someone shouting. Now the
original, or at least earlier, lyrics to these song are far more powerful to my
ears. I guess it's that they seem full of imagery, making me conjure up visions
that may or may not be what Portnoy saw when he wrote them. But that's what
makes it art. The passage above sounds too direct, too forced, too blunt... I
don't know. All IMHO, of course.
As for Voices, maybe the only DT song I've ever heard that does
absolutely NOTHING for me. I have never, in 200 or so listens, been able to
find one thing I liked about this song. And the Guitar solo, for me, is the
worst part. I think it wanders terribly, is completely lacking in dynamics,
and has the poorest choice of tone I've ever heard in one of their songs. It's
and has the poorest choice of tone I've ever heard in one of their songs. It's
not that I don't like JP's wah tone here, but it doesn't fit at all in this
song, to my ears anyway. I'm curious as to whether anyone else agrees with me
here, because I know alot of people love this song and especially this solo. I
guess I just don't get it.
Well, I'm not sure what I just wrote, but if you're actually still with
me, I just thought it was funny that two of this guy's favorite DT moments are
two of my least favorite. I guess it just shows what a variety of things there
to like in this music.
