Here I come, out of lurk-mode, to insert my $0.02 in this great topic.
There are many songs that arouse some passion (I am in the middle of
doing a paper on this very topic for school), but these have to be the
all-timers..

Wow.. there are so many.. those are probably the most emotional
songs I know of.. they all are very, very touching, each in their own
way.. And I don't think Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder in particular) gets
enough credit. Their (his) songs come across as some of the most
emotional in any type of music.

I have a question for parents out there - Why do parents always seem to blame rock bands for bad things? Here's why I ask.
I was listening to Howard Stern today and a lady called up who said that her daughter was raped at a Marilyn Manson concert and blamed the band for not doing anything about it. For one thing, the band has a shitload of lights in their face and can't see much of anything past the first few rows, second of all, even if he could see all the way to the back of the arena there were thousands of people there, how is he suppose to look into the audience and see some guy raping a 16 year old girl.
I feel terrible for what happened to this girl, but why do the bands always get all the blame when bad things happen? Women have been getting raped for thousands of years, rock and roll has only been around just over forty years so what's their excuse for the time before rock and roll was around to be the whipping boy of the world. What if a guy went to a Tony Bennett concert and later on that night raped or murdered a person, would they hold Tony Bennett responsible? I think not.
I'm really interested in hearing what parents have to say about this. I'm 35 myself but don't have any chiildren. I've been to hundreds of shows over the years and listen to everything from Tony Bennet to Mercyful Fate and I've yet to have the desire to do something bad to someone because of a song I listen to or a concert I've been to.

How about "I remember a time". His voice is just so damn pure, it personifies the innocence painted by the lyrics.
I'll "To Live Forever" to the list. Again for the vocals at the beginning. There's a reason I have it in my sig :)

Hehe its funny that you mention it.. i feel the same way ..i like the part of acos that says "love is not just a passing ?? , its a state of heart that goes on forever" and the stuff that follows it, more than the new lyrics..i dont know i guess it just fits more . Now about the voices solo ..ive always HATED it..to death..i mean my first opinion when i bought it and was hearing it with my brother was "wow..dt got kirk hammett to guest solo on this" cause it wanders aimlessly (the fast wah part) i dont know..ive always hated wah-ed solos. imo they sound sloppy.

hmm, there has beena local band around here for a few days wit that same exact name. I have one of their tapes lying around somewhere also....As I recall, there was only one song tht I liked a lot. The rest was just ok. I'll have to check out the page in case they might just be the same band.

I think you hit on the right word here: vague. Silly as it sounds, I too like the lyrics to be a bit vague. Just doesn't have the impact to me if the lyrics speak specifically about something. Don't tell me flat out, give me imagery and metaphors that tell me a compelling story, which I can perhaps then relate to my own experience. Lyrics like that can be very powerful.
Some songs that "move" me:
"Only a Matter of Time" - Dream Theater: My all-time favorite DT song, and it's basically a string of metaphors and images one after another (a particularly powerful one is of the young musician, aka Kevin Moore?, playing in his room dreaming that his chair is a stage and the wall clock is an audience). After each image is portrayed to us, their one unifying theme is summed up in the closing verse: "Likely or not it's a dream that we keep, and at odds with our senses we climb. But if faith is the answer, we've already reached it, and it's only a matter of time." Great stuff...plus it's proggy as hell, too. =)
"A Change of Seasons" - Dream Theater, "Subconscious": I agree with the last poster in that I wish they hadn't changed this for the released version, but not for the same reason. I simply wish that they kept the incredible neo-classical sixteenth-note extravaganza in the second instrumental section, where the entire band is so tight they could cover an airlock. This section always gives me goosebumps. I know they had to let Derek contribute to a section, but why this one? =)
"Operation:Mindrime" - Queensryche: Not the song, but the album, for I consider the entire album a song and won't listen to it if I don't have time to get through the whole thing. Just a great story and powerful music.
"Dreams" - Van Halen: Sammy's best lyrical work ever. It doesn't hurt that I played this tape very prominently on the way home after going through a rather difficult breakup with a gf at the time. This, along with "5150" (which helped remind me why I broke up with her in the first place <g>), got me so uplifted from that downer of a day. I still pop in the CD to listen to these two songs every once in a while (sadly, most of Van Halen's material suffers from the poor lyrical quality I mentioned above...hopefully that will change with Mr. Cherone in the band).
There's more, but I didn't mean to make the descriptions this long, so I'll stop.
One more thing (as if anyone's still reading this): What's going on with the petition? How about an update? Has it been sent? Is it still being edited and prepared to send out? Inquiring minds (and crazy DT fanatics) want to know!

As a true fan of classical guitar as well as a player, I thought I'd do a little pitch for a new cd my teacher Jim McCutcheon (internationally reknown) has just put out with his partner oboist Mark Twehues (also internationally reknown). The cd is titled "Moswcow Nights" and is a very remarkable performance (I was there for a bit of it). The disc is dedicated to performing Ukranian classics as well as well known pieces from "The Nutcraker" among other things. If any of you Jammers are into classical music (guitar and obeoe among all things), this disc is pretty impressive. If you any of you want any ifo on getting a hold of the disc itself or a copy, just mail me. As for EJ related news, I've had a correspondance with his keyboard player Stephen Barber for a couple of months and he sent me this cd with a composition he wrote performed by a brass group out of New York called The Meridian Arts Ensomble. The group is dedicated to playing tribute pieces by Frank Zappa as well as pieces commissioned by composers like Barber. The performances are really magical, and I'm not really even a brass fan! Barber's "Semahane", meaning Whirl Wall is based off the Sufism ritual ct of love, drama and faith. It is a very powerful performance and I just thought I'd help spread the word a little. .....Always wondered what happened to the guys in the period between a religious-overtoned, generally uplifting album like _III Sides_ and a cynical, darker _Waiting for the Punchline_. (From "Please tell me God isn't dead" to "There is no God". From "Don't Leave Me Alone" to "Leave Me Alone").
Gary Cherone never lost his faith. If you look at lyrics for the songs on Punchline You'll see that Gary makes good use of irony and sarcasm throughout all the songs. Its just that Nuno & Gary choose to make it a more raw, less processed album than 3 Sides. I like 'em both.

I think those are two of the better songs they've written. The way voices builds, then stops all of a sudden when JL says "love...just don't stare" is so cool. And the word speak, as in "so speak, I'm right here" is damn near a musical orgasm. Same for the excellent use of vibrato in the word bed (...devil in my bed), makes me shiver. The song is full of builds to sudden quiet, then building up again. Scarred is just plain incredible. Who could say they don't like the way JL screams "Maybe you leave me here to burn", then falls into the next line? I agree with everyone who said that ACOS was a song that they could listen to over and over without ever getting tired of. I too have let it repeat into the fifth and sixth time.

Hey everyone... I have a question [raises hand].... is this "guitar solo" actually a keyboard solo or a guitar/keyboard solo or a guitar solo?? The reason I ask is because there seems to be two different sounds going on in this solo... and knowing KevMo's talent he could certainly pull off something like this. Any ideas? If you take a closer listen there seems to be guitar chords in the background, too. Am I crazy or are they just overdubbing here?

I have to agree with the person who said that the studio version of A Change Of Seasons lacks something. I liked it up until I bought the Scenes From A Memory disc which has a so much better version of the song (vocalist audition w/Chris Cintron). This version just floored the studio version from the lyrics to the more raw feel of the music. At the end, the "don't go's" sound a lot better than "I will live on....". This is all just my opinion, no one has to agree. However, ACOS (the album) wasn't a total waste of money, I love Perfect Strangers and The Big Medley and by all means, I like ACOS (the song) to some extent.
For those who love When The Crowds Are Gone, check out the live version off Ghost In The Ruins...the way this song sounded literally made me cry (and I hate to admit it). The vocal/guitar part was perfect and totally flawless (Jon and Criss sound so f***ing cool together). It really doesn't get me moving until the "I never wanted to see, never wanted to be, I wasted my time till time wasted me" part. By all means, this is a classic performance of the song and I recommend it to anyone. Jon's voice also sounds much better in this version.
