Wow! The lists that people have been throwing out here have just been
amazing. I think my favorite thus far is Steve Zebrowski's, but they've all
been good. My own list of the most intense:

Rush: Time Stand Still, Dreamline, 2112, Different Strings, Distant Early
Warning, Prime Mover, The Pass, Hemispheres, Xanadu
Metallica: Fade To Black, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Sanitarium, Dyer's Eve
Satriani: I Believe, Flying In A Blue Dream, Always With Me, Always With You
Lost Souls: Gone and Away, As If I Cared, Deathmask
Yes: Heart of the Sunrise, Love Will Find A Way, Changes, Tempus Fugit
Fates Warning: Damnation, Eye To Eye, We Only Say Goodbye, The Eleventh Hour,
                   Monument
Weather Report: A Remark You Made, Havona, Unknown Soldier
Eric Johnson: Cliffs of Dover, Zap, Desert Rose
    Dar Williams: The Ocean, Iowa
King's X: Summerland, Goldilox, What Is This
Galactic Cowboys: I'm Not Amused, I Do What I Do
    Atomic Opera: Justice, September
Tori Amos: Winter, Silent All These Years
Aerosmith: Dream On, Seasons of Wither
Ian Moore: How Does It Feel, Muddy Jesus, Carry On
Pearl Jam: Garden, Indifference, Rearviewmirror, Release, Immortality
Roger McGuinn: King of the Hill
John Coltrane: A Love Supreme, Everytime We Say Goodbye
Steve Ray Vaughan: Life By The Drop, Pride and Joy
Youssou N'Dour: Xale, Set, Immigres/Bitim Rew
Miles Davis: All Blues, Seven Steps To Heaven
Dream Theater: Learning To Live, Scarred, Only A Matter of Time

Well, this is already way too damn long, so I'll quit here. There are many
    more....

Actually, I think that supports the "Metallica fans are stupid" argument
    pretty well, huh? ;)

On other matters, I picked up a new CD that some 'Jammers might enojy. It's
the new album from Boud Deun, _Astronomy Made Easy_. BD are an instrumental
four piece (gtr/bs/dr/vio) from the DC area (I think?). In a phrase, these
guys just smoke. They lay down all sorts of blinding riffs, often traded
off between the guitar and violin. They sort of remind me of a cross
between Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra in places, but really don't sound
like anybody I've ever heard. Should be heavy enough (tho' not metal) to
satisfy most Jammers. Also picked up CDs from Illuvatar (_Children_) and
Mind Gallery (_Guilty Until Proven Rich_) which are both pretty good, but
not mind blowing. If anybody wants to know any more about those, drop me a
    line.

Finally, for soungs that touch me (huh huh), I'll go for two that just leave
me emotionally spent after listening: "King", the last track of Marillion's
_Affraid of Sunlight_ album and the live version of "Supper's Ready" from
    _Seconds Out_ by Genesis.

This should be good for some flamage... but I received two songs
from the above album -- Edge of Thorns and He Carves His Stone. The first
sounds like a Bon Jovi song and the vocalist sort of ruins it at the end
because he keeps doing the Phil-Collins-never-stop-singing thing with the
    "Anymo-o-o-ore... anymooooorrrree" business.
He Carves His Stone wasn't too bad.. heavy enough certainly.. but
the lyrics were incredibly juvenile. This stuck me as a song that, were I
in that band, I would be looking back on now with a great deal of
embarrassment (esp. if I had written it).
The reason I wanted these songs was because everybody in this
group seems to like Savatage.. whereas I like very little of the one album
I do have (Dead Winter Dead).. mainly the classical sections and the last
song before they start showing off at the end.

Ever notice how record labels often gloss over certain details?
Where is Dibiase on this one? How about Aresti? They've been on every
album together except one until this one (Dibiase has been on all of
them). I'm glad they have a keyboardist though, that element was really
    missing before.
One last snap: WHY do so many prog-metal groups compare themselves
to Rush? I like Fate's Warning, but I wouldn't compare ANY success they've
had to Rush's on a critical, commercial or musical level.

    >could take advantage of it. There are some pieces that I think would do
    >well on the radio if given the chance.

Well they might have wanted to do something different. It's kind
of nice actually that they're NOT going to piss everybody off by trying to
sell out. Rather they're trying to make the best music they can, full
speed ahead and damn the torpedoes. Sometimes I wish Dream Theater was
    more like that.

    >This release is due out 4/22/97.

I'll be there (well actually I won't, unless Metal Blade finds
some way to start leaking more stuff north of the 49th).. but I'll buy it
as soon as I can anyway :).

Just got my first Shadow Gallery this week. Their vocal component is one of the strongest I've heard in a long time. I'm not sure I'd say they really grip my emotions the way many other bands do though.

I agree with you 110%. I could grow to like the ACOS studio version a great deal if not for.. "that".. the lyrics in Part V are worse, I'd say, than tacky. Try the adjectives "cheesy, corny, clumsy". Which is really quite surprising considering how bloody AMAZING the rest of it is. Perhaps the band felt that the original "lyrics" for Part V such as they were need a revision (I'd agree to a point).. but totally changing them like that just makes them sounds sophomoric, if I may borrow Jazzmin's assessment of the Majesty Demos (it was Jazzmin, right?) I like Voices a lot though :).

    >>Burning Bridges - Crimson Glory - sad and haunting, with Midnight really >>feeling it. Yeah, they had some really *great* songs and with Midnight a fantastic voice as well. Anybody knows what he's doing now? I've heard he's on alcohol, living under the bridge (absolutely unconfirmed!) ... hope it isn't true!

And John Arch? He did "Night On Broken", "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken The Guardian" with Fates Warning. After that I only know that he was auditioning with DT, I guess to get Dominicis job. Is he in a band now? Any CDs after FW? His voice was weird but ... don't know ... I liked it!

A few jams ago someone asked for Sieges Even: You're right, I don't care for their new CD neither. But they also did "Steps" and "A Sense Of Change" (90/91). Check them out; at least the 2nd one! Unfortunately very weak production! But good, complex song-structures, well ...real prog! Somehow reminds me of Rush (but don't know why) ...

    >>Always wondered what happened to the guys in the period between a >>religious-overtoned, generally uplifting album like _III Sides_ and a >>cynical, darker _Waiting for the Punchline_. (From "Please tell me God >>isn't dead" to "There is no God". From "Don't Leave Me Alone" to "Leave Me >>Alone"). Right, that's a question I'd also like to get answered!

And to all those who still wonder about Spock's Beard: Don't hesitate! If you think you'd like a mixture of Pink Floyd, Yes and ELP: Buy them! They're fantastic!

I put Alaska. Don't that count for anything? :) That song makes me yearn to be somewhere I've never been. It's like a calling. I like Say Goodbye to the Morning alot, too. Put that one up there. That one touched me the first time I listened and everafter. Missed that one.

Was I fucking talking to you? NO! Shut the fuck up and move to the end of the line. This was for people interested in listening to Sav's other stuff. I'm sure if you didn't like DWD then you wouldn't like either Handful of Rain or Edge of Thorns. If only Bon Jovi had written songs like Edgo of Thorns. heheh... Bon Jovi still kick ass though if ya ask me.. Don't try to ruin it for everyone else.

Does anyone know anything about the band Manitou?? I got a couple of their songs on a tape someone made for me a while back. These guys are great. I can't find out if their material is available domestically (here in the states) or if it's available through in import place. If anyone has any info. e-mail me. Thanks

    Greetingz Jammerz -

This is in response to Ryan in YJ2336 saying how nobody though that any Shadow Gallery tunes are "passionate". I DO!! I DO!! :-) In YJ2334, I wrote that "Warcry" qualifies for my list BIG TIME. God, what a song! In actuality, I think that "Carved In Stone" just oozes passion... that's why it's one of my all-time favorite albums! Reading many of the other posts regarding this thread jarred my memory as to some of the other ones that get me warm and fuzzy... I never realized there were so many! BTW, going in the other extreme, one song that gets my heart pounding furiously every time is AC/DC "Let There Be Rock". Just picked up their new Live in Madrid video - F**kin' AWESOME! Laterz, friendz.... Matt T.
