I'm not going to repost the whole thing. I thought you would know I was joking.
Should have done the smiley. :) I don't like country, but I realize that
there is some real musicianship going on there. I just can't STAND the vocals.
Although, I think the lyrics themselves might be even worse for me. I don't
know if you remember my post a few weeks ago about vague lyrics, but most
country lyrics are UNBELIEVABLY cheesy to me. Like, so much so, that I wonder
how anyone with any taste could sit there and listen to them and not gag. I've
already basically said why in the past, so if you want to hear my justification
, email me privately. But my point is, the "I hate it because it sucks"
comment was intended as a joke. I sincerely don't believe that one form of
    music is superior to another.
Also, I have a little more respect for "real country" than for all the
pop crap that's getting churned out nowadays.

    >Is there a new Dream Theater album coming out in teh near future?

NO! You've heard the last of that band. I've been asking the same
question for over a year now and have decided that this mailing list is
the closest I'll come to anything new related to Dream Theater.
Unfortunately most of it is rhetoric and conjecture, but I still enjoy
it (sometimes) just the same. It's unfortunate that their last release
COS was engineered by a crack head and thus falls short of a
    professional recording.

Even if they do put out another CD it will probably be "aggressive"
instead of "progressive" so a lot of those metal heads out there will
revert to listening to Metalica or Megadeath or Slayer or some other
"slam your head against the wall/kill everyone" type of band. No
insults intended here. What's happening to this world?

An unrelated question: Can some of you double-bass drummers out there
tell me how you approach perfecting your double-bass drum playing? Do
you plant your heels all the time and work on speed and consistency or
do you play with your heels up using the balls of your feet or do you
switch back and forth depending on the speed you need? Inquiring minds
    would like to know.

    God Bless,

    Michael C.

Hmm, talk about elaborate strategies to get people into DT :).
Actually, that reminds me of something that happened to some friends
of mine a number of years ago. They had gotten a tape (pre-recorded,
not a dub :) of some band like either Black Sabbath, Annihalator,
Exciter, or something like that. I can't remember other than it was
a (well, was supposed to be) some heavy band. Anyway, it ended up
having The Eurythmics actually on it. Crazy :).

Out of that list, I'd have to give the award for Highest Energy Performer to
ST in general, and Mike Muir specifically. I saw them on the tour with
Metallica and Danzig, and I didn't think he'd survive all the jumping around
and shit. After all, he's not exactly small. Not only did he survive, but
after the set, he jumped into the crowd (this was at Great Woods in MA, for
those that don't know it, it's an outdoor arena with seats under a pavilion,
and a huge lawn area behind that) and proceeded to go through the pavilion
area (being mobbed by fans), jumped the fence onto the lawn, and went all
the way back through the lawn and exited at the back. I've never seen
anything like it. Total mob scene. :)

I'm always amused by the bootlegging debate. I reiterate, I not only do
not condone or tolerate the widespread acceptance of bootlegging. But the
few of you who seem proud of buying bootlegs of the new material have
    lost my respect completely.
Another thing that I wonder at this moment, I don't see any connection
between DT's style of music and Megadeth. I've never considered them even
remotely similar, perhaps someone can explain to me what Im missing.
I finally went out and bought the DragonAttack CD. Although all of the
vocals were quite good. It wasn't Jeff Soto's or LaBrie's that impressed
me. ( They to this point have been two of my favorite influences) It was
Glen Hughes. Get Down Make love seemed to have an emotional power to it
that I don't hear very often. Spark is something that can't be taught,
and wow, that man has it doesn't he.
Ok...im done babbling....back to work on my new project...

Actually, I thought Maiden's downfall (I use that term very loosely
since I do like X-Factor some, and some post 7th Son albums, too. I
also saw them live with Blaze, and liked him, though not as much as
Dickinson) started with the departure of Adrian Smith. Don't get me
wrong, Janik Gers is a good guitarist, but I prefer Smith's cleaner,
more precise style to Gers' sloppier (though more overtly energetic)
playing. I just like the way Smith and Murray complimented each
    other more.

For my money, Perpendicular is the best Purple album since Perfect
Strangers, and is one of the best ever. Morse brings a stronger sense of
melody and a fresh perspective to the band.

I'd reccommend the album to fans of Morse as being some of his best
playing. He just keeps getting better!

    IMHO, of course. :)

Not sure if this qualifies as funny or not, but Skadz, Wacky and I all had a good laugh over it:

Someone mentioned getting together at the Trinity Pub before the Strand show. When we got there, we cruised the streets a little and ran into the folks. They said not to bother going into the Pub as it was too crowded.

Well, we find a place to park the car and happen to walk by the Pub on the way to Strand. It didn't look too bad, so we (Skadz & I, sorry Wacky :) figure "let's grab a couple of frosties" :).

We get through the door and Mike is standing in front of us in line. We make no attempts to cut in front :) We shake hands, exchange a hello and are content with the brief encounter, knowing we'll be seeing him and a couple of his musician friends in a little while :)

Where do we get seated? At a table next to the group. We think back to the guys who originally bailed on the pre-game festivities, kick back, and all have a good laugh over it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    LensCrafters to the rescue:

Cuz it's just plain getting old already. It's been beaten so much beyond death, it's actually come back to life. Everyone knows the issues already, everyone knows there are people for and people against. Everyone knows an irresistable force has met an immovable object.

I had no problem at all with the topic when it first came up. I understand there are many on here for which boots are an important issue. However, folks have been talking about it for what, two weeks now? How many other fucking ways can you say the same thing? BURY IT ALREADY!

So we can move on to the next ulcer-inducing thread... :)

If you want to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, the next time someone - who apparently is just coming on board with the thread - asks about it, refer them to previous jams or send 'em e-mail. Understand that some percentage of the 900+ jammers don't give a flying fuck about it...honestly!

On second thought, don't worry. I'll skip over it :) Just figured in the two years I've been here, I have the right to blow off some steam once!

    Have a great weekend, folks!!

    Regards,

    Jon

I've read the posts on this issue pretty closely, since I'm the one that started it, and I don't believe anyone is buying/selling these shows. I suppose I'm one of the people that has lost your respect completely, but I just wanted to say that you're missing out on a mountain of material by condemning bootlegging. I am not trying to change your opinion, just stating that I, too, deserve respect.

BTW, even though I started the thread, and argued wholeheartedly for a day, I haven't posted on the issue in the last two days. I thought it was a good thread, but like all others, should not be dragged out forever. It was cool arguing and testing the tolerance of some 'jammers, but I'm over it. Thanks for all the replies - supportive or non.

y'know, reading a lot of the stuff on these jams, particularly what progressive means and that sort of thing, I have to throw in something here.

Sometimes music gets a label that applies to specific aspects of the style of music. Simplistic example, 'heavy metal': lots of loud guitars and loud drums and loud stuff, usually fast, etc.

But then you get whole genres of music who's label stems not from the music inherently, but in it's relation to other music. When this happens, uh, it gets, like confusing or something. Here's what I mean.

It used to be that alternative music was just that: an alternative to the popular forms of rock and roll. That was before Alternative became popular, and ceased to be alternative as a genre(because it wasn't alternative anymore) but remains alternative as a *style of music* that fits certain specific requirments that you can list, like offkey powerchords, loud 'n' soft contrast, and so on. There's two distinctly different ways of interpreting 'alternative' and it's important that you know which meaning you're using. Nirvana is alternative in it's style, but according to a dictionary definition of alternative, obvioulsy they're not alternative.

This works with progressive as well. You can use the dictionary definition or the style of music definition, neither is less valid, but ya gotta clarify what you mean. The FW example someone gave was a good one. Have they changed a whole lot in the last few albums? I don't think they have, but they still play in a progressive style.

forget about progressive *genres*, what makes a progressive *style*? Well, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about but I would venture something like odd time signatures, lots o' keyboards, and singers with high voices. :)

Megadeth is NOT a great live band. Performance-wise, they were flawless (I saw them in '95), but as far as the show went, it wasn't that exciting. Combined with the fact I dislike Youthanasia, it just wasn't a great show. Although I did enjoy "Tornado of Souls"....I had been yelling the title all night and Mustaine looked at me and said "just wait"...that was kind of cool.

Best band I've seen live is Deep Purple, last November. INCREDIBLE! Everything about that show was perfect! I can't believe 50+ year old guys can rock that hard! I think Steve Morse gave them a much needed kick in the ass.

Next best was Yngwie Malmsteen in 1993...that kicked ass! He's quite a performer. Played for almost 3 hours!! It was well worth the $16 I paid!

I saw Iron Maiden (with Blaze Bailey) last March...their show is so stripped down...I was there for the classic Maiden songs and to see Steve Harris...not a bad show overall, but not all that special either.

Anyways, I've been to a lot of other shows, but I really think Deep Purple tops the list. If any of you have the chance to see them, do it.

I can't wait to see Rush, Queensryche, and DT...

Whoa! I have never, ever heard someone say that Joe was bad live, so this got me curious. I've seen him twice, and at both shows he was the most animated guitarist I have seen onstage. Especially at the G3 show at the Beacon. He even said that he had to take a minute to calm down so he could play Always with Me... I am saying this not to flame, but to inquire as to what made the performance suck? I would send this privately, but I think I'm not the only one who'll be curious about an answer to this one. ----------------------------

I was talking about the show he made here last year. It was just like that: he entered the stage, played the songs, spoke a few words (like, "How are you tonight?" and "Good night guys.", and that was all), walked once to the right of the stage (where I was) and another one to the far left, and then returned to his original position, which seemed very comfortable, 'cause he didn't leave it anymore. :) And he made ALL THAT in about 2 hours of show. I really expected more from Satch, as I heard on, e.g., Time Machine, but his performance really disappointed me and many other fans.

Well, he has been singing for almost 30 years and that's a long time, so I'd imagine that his voice is different than 'the old stuff.' You must not have heard their last cd "The Battle Rages On." Now *that* album sucked!

    Hey everyone.

I want to discuss a matter of respect here. I've seen a few posts here and there from people (some of whom I think are very intelligent, and valuable members of the jam) explaining the fact that they "don't owe DT anything". Of course you don't owe them anything. You don't owe them your ears OR your wallet. But any band that has given you as much fantastic music as DT has, and treats it's fans as well as DT does, deserves your respect. When the band makes a simple request of us, it's most loyal internet following, not to spread their new unreleased material out before they get the opportunity themselves, we simply must follow it. Okay... I won't even say "You must"... I will simply say that if you don't, then you do NOT have respect for the band. You are NOt a loyal fan. If that doesn't matter to you, then that's fine. Then there's the issue of calling me greedy, and self-righteous, along with the other people who support this side of the argument. Listen, I don't care, and WILL NOT care about your opinions of me. If you think I'm greedy, then you're misguided. I do not have any fix tapes, and I've made that clear. If you say I'm self-righteous because I fight for what I believe in, then fine. I will accept your label. But in this case, I'm not fighting for my own integrity, nor am I fighting for personal gain. I am going to put up a fight against this as long as I feel it's necessary, or until Skadz stops me. It's not fair of some of you people to drag this list down because you have the willpower of a small insect and can't wait to get the new DT material. Bad mouth me as much as you feel you can. I don't care... you have not put a dent in my argument or feelings in the subject, and have not yet made any substantial explanation as to why we should go against the wishes of the band we're here to support, in an issue where they can only be right, since it's their music and any dealing in it is upsetting to them. And again, I state right here, so people will stop acting like I'm saying "No Bootlegs": I don't care about bootlegs. If you want to do em, fine. If you want to talk about them on the jam, I have no right to stop you. Start a tape tree for DoE... do what you want... but the band asked us not to spread the new music around before they themselves have released it. I am fundamentally against the public distribution of this new music until the band releases it on an album, or disbands. If it takes ten years to put the new album out, I am willing to wait, rather than be a dick to the band. Ask yourself where the fuck you stand, and then act accordingly.
