The Mercury Lounge is pretty nice as far as NYC clubs go. It's very small.
The performance area is separate from the main bar and it's just an open
room with 3 or 4 tables on each side against the wall. The sound is always
great and that's what really counts.
If you're planning on going, call the club. Sometimes the headliner plays
in the middle of the bill at a reasonable hour. They also stick pretty
close to the showtimes, so don't be late :)

I think a lot of people are missing the point here (and I am not
picking on this post in particular)... No cops are going to kick in
your door if you have boots of the 96 shows, DT's label isn't going to
drag you into court, the world will not end if you are found out. The
main issue here is that Mike Portnoy (you know that pretty cool
drummer in DT) asked us to be cool and not distribute boots of the
shows. Now Mike P. is a big bootleg fan, he doesn't mind bootlegging
at all, he merely wanted us to show him and the band some respect by
not letting these special shows get all over the place. I think this
is a fair thing for Mike to ask of us. Even though I didn't get to go
to the Fix shows, I'd like the opportunity to do so in the future. If
we are cool and respect the band's wishes, I am sure more cool things
like these types of preview shows, Christmas CDs, etc. will be made
available. Now if Mike reads the Jam and sees a bunch of people
trading Fix for 96 shows, starting tape trees, offering to burn CDs of
it, it'll probably piss him off (and rightfully so). You can bet our
respectability as a whole in the eyes of DT will be greatly
diminished. So if you ever want to see DT show up at a YtseCon in the
future, be cool and respect this one small favor Mike asked of us. If
you have tapes of the show, cool...listen to them and enjoy them (I
wish I had them), but don't distribute them on the list.

it is a really nice place, and a great place to see a show
*(a few friends of mine saw "Jars of Clay" there a while back).

Hi guys
I sure wish that I owned the technology to put our Metropolis up on a web page. That way I could really show you guys how cool this is. Until then, you're just going to have to settle with the tape we plan on making as soon as the season is over. Even then, you're going to have to send me a tape for me to copy it for you. I have posted this many times and only gotten about 11 responses. I am doing everything within my power to back up what I say.
And, hey, I am trying to be humble about my efforts. I know that we are still learning, and all I feel is that we deserve is better placement in our CLASS. We do deserve to be in the lowest class because this is our first year. Compared to Bear Creek and Northglen, we are babies. I wasn't looking for a negative response, and I only posted because I needed to get those things off my chest, and I figured that you guys would understand why I feel this way.
If you are interested in hearing Metropolis and are willing to send me a tape, please mail me personally.

Chris - I mean nothing personal by any of this, but if you're so offended by the views of some (hopefully most) of the 'jammers, and fear DT reading this stuff, simply give away all of your DT material except WDADU, I&W, Awake, ACOS, and promptly resign from this list. I'm afraid bootlegs are a way of life here, and have been since long before you were a member.

It all comes down to: do you respect the wishes of the band. The band has asked you not to spread your recordings all over the world. So don't!! This is something that could potentially hurt the band if it were to get to the record company, so why do it? I own some boots from way back when. But none of the current Fix shows. I respect the band a lot, enough to not go out and get any Fix shows, even when I could by emailing certain people on this list. I can wait. can you?

How about this scenario. DT played 5 new songs during the Fix shows, they have what? 15 new songs written. It's looking more and more likely that this album will not be out in 97' , at the pace they are writing new material. Add about 6 or 7 new songs before the recording process. Who's to say the tunes they played at the Fix gigs will even make the final cut. Hopefully this thread will die out soon,

of the fact of the record company, i dont think it would hurt it, but you are RIGHT on when you say DO YOU RESPECT THE BAND? this is NOT a bootleg issue, this is an issue simply on these fix shows. you dont need a reason, either you respect the band or you dont. if you dont, are you a real fan? i'll tell this much: i have tapes of the fix shows, i obtained them hearing that guys in the band werent up for it, but sure, none of them ever are but portnoy, i'll also tell you though now after i learned even portnoy disagrees with the passing around of these tapes they are going on my shelf and will remain there. its a simple matter of respecting their wishes. you're on this list in tribute to the music of these guys, and these guys themselves.
i'll finish it with this: they asked the fans not to distribute these shows, if you dont abide by this, you most likely figured they werent talking to you, you couldnt possibly be a fan ;) ~Rip

In this case, the distribution of these recordings is a violation of US copyright law, which is a felony. Under other circumstances, it isn't, such as Mr. Bahr's CDs, because those are APPROVED BY THE BAND AND MANAGEMENT, whereas with the Fix boots we have the exact opposite situation - the band specifically requested no taping. You entirely miss the point - are you ignorant, or just being deliberately obfuscatory in order to aid your rationalizations?

I didn't know much about DT until after I & W came out. After I bought WDADU I recognized some of the songs from when they got played on KNAC back when it was released in 89. Although I like LaBrie better that CD, I don't think he was nearly as bad as some jammers make him out to be. Even though I get flamed for this every time I mention it I don't give a fuck because it's my opinion and if someone can't accept it and accept the fact that people can disagree then fuck em, but WDADU is *my* favorite DT album. I think it would've sounded better with JLB singing it (as MB's WDATU shows) but I still think it's a kick ass album. They had a small budget when they recorded it so they didn't have a lot of time to polish it up and tinker with it a lot. I think it has a raw energy to it that has been lacking since.
Now, that doesn't mean I don't like the other stuff; I like EVERY DT cd, I personally just like the first one the best.

There's nothing wrong with waiting for the new album and keeping some of the mystique around the new material. Ryan can do whatever the hell he wants with those boots, the fact is, the Band has asked not to have those spread around, which is a reasonable request but it is no ones place to dictate to Ryan what he should do with those boots. So, get off the guy's back and if you dont like his decision, tuff shit. Your not him.

What would you like from me, blood? Like I said in my original post and a few times in this response; I emailed you and you didn't respond to my emails, what did you expect me to think. If you would've emailed me and said "I've got other trades I'm working on and I can't get to you for another year" I would've said "fine, I'll talk to you in a year." I wouldn't have been really happy about it but I would know what's going on.

There are some people on the jam who have spent time with me here at home and know I have two dogs. They know my dogs mean more to me than anything in the world, including myself. I would lay down my life for my pets because without them I'm nothing. And I feel exactly the way you do about people who mistreat animals. In fact, my dog Amanda was taken from a guy who viciously beat her. We had her a whole week before she would even come to me she was so afraid. Everytime I think of how that man must have beat her it brings tears to my eyes. But all I can do is just give her all the love I can and she has slowly come to the point where she doesn't hide behind the furniture when people come over to the house now.

I still haven't received an email from you saying when you were sending the tapes out. That may be for a number of reasons since I've tried to send emails to Mape several times but it always bounces ack to me. But please take your time. I don't want to live with the possibility of you getting sick because you had to send my tapes out.
