True, but isn't it illegal to create bootlegs, esp. if the band doesn't
    want it?

I hope I come off intelligent in this post..... :-)

I consider progressive metal to be the new 'alternative' music. With
'alternative' I don't mean whinny lyrics and a bunch of bad distorted
guitars, I mean 'alternative' in the sense that most prog bands are doing
whatever music they want to do and they are generally not worried about
large scale acceptance of their music. To me this is what alternative music
is.... smashing pumpkins and every other band are just a bunch of mainstream
musicians trying to please as many people as possible but at the same time
trying to give the image that they're independant of the mainstream they are
creating. Theyve all became the musicians that they used to laugh at.
    Later,
    Scott

OK, I was thinking that prog deals more with alot of experimented
sounds, time changes, and very involved themes. Symphonic I was
refering to as something that will use some of those experimental
sounds (I count PF's early stuff with Syd as Prog), but symphonic
sets more of a scene. Lots of thick textures and ambiance. Not a
whole lot, if any time changes. Just basically I guess what you
could still call "prog lite." Pink Floyd and Marillion are what I'd
    condider a "Genuine Draft". :)

I dunno. It's hard to define this stuff ain't it?

Here's a thought- why don't Dream Theater put out their new CD on their own
label. I don't know how hard it is to get your own label but Testament did
it on their 1995 album, Live At The Fillmore. Just a thought...

    New CD's I got at a record/CD convention...

Queensryche- Someone Else promo. The B-side to this is SE with the full band
and needless to say, I am amazed. They added quite a lot of lyrics in this
version. My favorite part on this song is the horns they use in
it........more bands should use horns like they did on Promised Land and the
    band version of Someone Else.

Drown- What It Is To Burn promo. This one features 2 remixes of the song-
the inhuman dub and the firedog mix. Great industrial band who focused more
on the metal part than the industrial part. Unfortunately, these remixes
focus more on the industrial part.

Seven Mary Three- Forty One Minutes Seeing that any kind of alternative
turns into a heated arguement on the net, I'll make this short. Call 'em
alternative, call 'em grunge, to me, they are just old-style rock n roll.
This ones a bootleg from a radio show and features most all the tracks from
American Standard. The best two tracks are Cumbersome and Lame.

Paradise Lost- Dead Good Awesome bootleg disc from their 1995 Draconian
Times tour. Not sure how well-recieved they are on the jam but if you like
the band, this is a definite collectors item to have. The first 12 tracks
are a little hard to hear on the vocals but still clear enough. Highlights
of the first 13 tracks are "Hallowed Land", "The Last Time", "Yearn For
Change". I'm not real familiar with much of the older stuff but lets just
say, even that sounded pretty good. The last 5 tracks are the best of the
set..(from a different concert). The songs they play here are "I See Your
Face" (great song), "Rememberance", "Forever Failure" (sounds better than
the studio version), "Shadow Kings" and one other one. Not great
packaging..just a picture of the singer on the front (who oddly looks like
James LaBrie) and a photograph of the guitarist on the back and a band pic
    inside the cover.

I saw a lot of Dream Theater stuff but couldn't find any single CD's. I was
primarily looking for single CD's because the double bootlegs were all 40
bucks and the single boots were 20 but alls they had were doubles. I was
also looking for the Lie single but without success. I've said enough for now.

Are you sure you read everything about this topic? The issue isn't that
Skadz prohibited trading of Fix boots on the 'jam (he didn't), the
issue is that the band has asked that recordings of these concerts not
be distributed until the album is released (actually, they requested
that no recordings be made at all, which is admittedly wishful thinking,
but many have extended the interpretation of this request to distribution
as well, which seems reasonable to me).

Personally, I don't care if those who have recordings make copies for
people who ask for them. What you do behind closed doors, so to
speak, is your business. The problem that I and many other people have
is when people use the ytsejam mailing list to publicly solicit,
advertise, or promote an organized tape tree or CD project of the
Fix boots. This goes blatantly against the band's specific wishes,
and makes it look like all ytsejammers have no respect for the band.

This isn't about opinions. It may be your opinion that the band's request
is unreasonable, and that the Fix boots deserve to be heard by all.
That's fine, but what about my opinion, as a fellow ytsejam subscriber,
that going against this request, reasonable or not, shows a complete
lack of respect? By using the ytsejam to organize this boot distribution,
it gives the impression that my opinion is the same as yours, and it's not.
In other words, to paraphrase Mr. Ptacek, do whatever you want, but don't
bring the 'jam down with you.

It may seem extreme to protect the image of the ytsejam like this, but
you have to realize we've got a pretty good thing going on here.
The band members acknowledge ytsejam t-shirts at concerts and clinics,
and if you talk to band members after concerts and mention you're on the
'jam, they recognize you as a member of their biggest unofficial fan
club. In other words, they like us; they really like us. <g> This may
not seem like much, but it's alot more than other bands give. As a
counter-example, look at Rush. Neil Peart has a disdain for all things
online, and the TNMS mailing list is pretty much ignored by Rush, if not
ridiculed sometimes (this was my impression from subscribing to TNMS a
long time ago; things might have changed, but I doubt it).

Finally, I want to make a point to those that think they don't owe the
band anything. In my 2.5 years as a ytsejam subscriber, I don't recall
_ANY_ specific request by the band to this mailing list. Mike Bahr
has been reigned in once or twice, but for the most part they've let us
do whatever we want. Sell boots, do CD projects, make tape trees, etc.
I don't see what's so wrong with honoring the one request they've given
    directly to the fans.

There. That last paragraph was my one and only attempt to sway some
peoples' opinions. If it didn't work, then don't sweat it, reply to me
by email if you want. The main thing here is that if you still disagree
with me and want to trade boots, then just don't do it on the ytsejam.
By doing so, you're no longer just disrespecting 5 talented musicians,
you're also disrespecting several hundred other people as well.

<gets off soapbox and puts it away, hopefully for good>

OK, I saw a review of this band in the last Guitar School magazine I picked up. The tab for Cliffs of Dover is rather humbling dontcha think? :)

Space Needle - The Moray Eels Eat the Space Needle (Zero Hour) Any band that opens with a 13-minute instrumental foray called "Where the Fuck is My Wallet" is going to rate high on the "Screw the Hit Machine" chart. Especially when said foray begins innocently enough, with a gently strummed melodic chord riff, before devolving into a gratingly electric drone and then into free jazz. Or freak rock. Or noise. On top of that, when Roger Dean(known best for producing cover art for many a Yes album) designs your cover, the presumption is that the album is going to be progressive, exploratory, and blissfully bombastic as Yes. And it is. Vacillating freely between gentle ethereal psychedelica, indie-rock hullabulloo, sweetly harmonized vocals and an array of guitar freakouts that surely break federal, state, and local, laws. The Moray Eeels Eat the Space Needle is a bone fide enigma.

Now, not that I've heard this, or probably would want to, but it sounds like he's trying to describe it as Tales of the Topographic Oceans style Yes stuff. I just thought that someone here might be interested in that since I know there are quite a few Yes fans out there.

I > think about half the album really doesn't do a whole lot for me, but the > other half IMHO is some of the best Helloween EVER (i.e. First Time, Giants, > I Believe, etc.). Great stuff...

COOL!!! I thought i was one of the brave few who actually likes this album too! I think its much better than the disappointing "Pink Bubbles Go Ape". "Giants" had me rewinding solo after traded off solo :-) "I Believe", "First Time", "Music", and "Longing" are friggin' beautiful! Hearing Kiske sing that song by himself and just a guitar is awesome....emotional indeed. You can throw "Crazy Cat" together with "Heavy Metal Hamsters" (from PBGA)..kinda cornball but still fun.

    > I still can't get used to Andi Deris, > though. Just doesn't do much for me, ya know? BTW, does anyone know the > circumstances regarding Kiske's departure? Was he booted or was it > voluntary?

I agree. Deris doesn't do much for me at all. I never liked those "earthy" singers (ala Graham Bonnet). Overall he's not bad, its just that when compared to Kiske he's dwarfed. The circumstances regarding his departure is one LONG and sordid affair. Although the way Andre Corbin and HELSTAR parted ways is probably the WORST. Anyone know if he's still gonna play guitar on tour for FW?? I heard Jim Matheos decided against it. Basically what happened is that Weikath became increasing jealous of Kai Hansen's playing abilities which increased the tension in the group. Weikath's jealousy proved unbearable and Kai split and formed the now majestic GAMMA RAY (thank god!! :-) After Kai left, Weikath's jealousy focused on Kiske for some reason, rumors spread and tensions mounted and Kiske decided to split (or was asked to leave by Weikath..I forgot?) At this point (after Chamelon tour) Ingo was kicked out by Weikath for drug abuse. Still with me...it gets worse..........

When Ingo completed rehab and tried to rejoin HELLOWEEN, Weikath wouldn't let him join and hired Uli Kusch (incidentally GAMMA RAY's first drummer). Being that Ingo's passion in life was to make music with friends (he stated this in an interview before his suicide) he decided to end his life way too early and threw himself in front of a train. The world lost a great drummer that day...all because of some stupid fucking control freak. Anyhow..thats the current state of HELLOWEEN and its members. I'm not sure how Marcus fits into all this..maybe he was neutral.

Here is what Michael Kiske states at the end of the liner notes on his solo album:

"Funny thanks to the remaining rest of HELLOWEEN for being a loud warning for me about what "true" art and friendship was never meant to be." Du gleichst dem Geist den Du beg reilst, nicht mir. -(Goethe, Faust I)

    Anyone know what that means????

Hope that cleared it up some. At least instead of one band creating great music, there are now two (HELLOWEEN & GAMMA RAY).

    cheers, Carlo

Since I was thinking about HELLOWEEN's "Chameleon" I was thinking of the song "Windmill" and started remembering all these songs that I had interpreted weird lyrics from.

HELLOWEEN "Windmill" The chorus he's singing..Wiinnndmill, wiinndmill, keep until (or something like that). I always thought he was singing, "Wedding Bells, Wedding bells, ring until then"

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN: "I'm My Own Enemy" Whoever posted that at 00:59 into the song he sings "Hacking robot power..." was dead on..I searched this out and when I found it I couldnt stop laughing. I think he's really saying something like, "Up until now we were one....

    QUEENSRYCHE: "Before the Storm"

This is a GOOOOOOD one. My friend pointed this out when I was driving eastbound on the LIE (I actually remember where I was cuz its so funny). When Geoff sings the chorus "Before the storm, before the storm.....I could swear he's really saying (you'll love this!)..........."Pour this coffee, pour this coffee, pour this coffee, ohhhhhhh, pour this coffee, pour this coffee" I thought that was so friggin' funny :-) Probably so funny because of the absurdity of the lyrics...imagine QUEENSRYCHE writing stuff like that?!?!?!? "Toast this bread, spread the jam,..ohhhhh...scramble these eggs."

IRON MAIDEN: "Bring your daughter to the slaughter"

Doesn't it sound like Bruce (when he sings the chorus.."Bring your daughter, bring your daughter...") is actually singing...."Bring me a doughnut, bring me a doughnut, bring me a doooooooooooughnut.."

Anyway, just a couple of tunes to lighten up my crappy spring break (Its just gorgeous here in sunny Queens). Also, does nayone know if the first two NITRO albums are any good. I know the guitar work is insane cuz Michael Angelo is on it, but I wanna know if its something like TNT or more like RACER X?

    hey jammerz!

My name is Mark.. you may or may not know me but I've been on the jam for several months now and I love it!!! Anyways, My band, Rupture150, is opening for Dee Snider in Phoenix, Arizona on April 11th. It is as the Mason Jar, and we go on at around 8 (I think), and for those of you who know the Mason Jar you know that Franko (the owner) makes the band sell tickets, and selling tickets is pretty much the only way of getting gigs, getting a following, and moving on to bigger and better things. So any of you rockers in the Phoenix area, PLEASE come and support us if you can. We have played there a couple times before and the people who come to see us are much more energetic and "normal" than the usual crowd, so its sure to be a good time. We were the first band playing at our last show (Saturday March 22nd, for Enuff 'Znuff) and we had 80 or so people all standing up in the front, and even a little pit, neither of which have a seen before for an early opening band at the Jar before!! Anyways, the guys in Enuff 'Znuff (who were really nice and cool, by the way) and the employees of the Jar were very impressed by our performance and the energy we had. Chip Znuff even jokingly told us "Wow, you guys have more people out here than we usually do!" It was a really cool experience. Anyways now that Im thru with the story, I want to see lots of you Phoenix area jammers out there, tickets are only $12 in advance, and not only do you get to see a great up and coming local band (us) but you get to see a washed up aging rocker (Dee Snider, who I am sure will put on a good show as well)!

E-mail me (ace@onfire.net or Rupture150@alternacom.com) for info, or gimme a ring at 840-1918. Thanks alot for reading my long, boring and mostly useless message.

Note: There was no DT content in the preceeding message, and I DONT CARE!!! : ) ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Deep RUSH Thoughts:

If you rearrange the letters in the band member's names, you can spell "Rush is the greatest rock band in history!" Of course, you may have to add or delete a few letters...or use a different band's names.

Canada will probably never see a show like this either. :( I actually haven't heard "Abigail" or "Them" yet becuase I can't get them at local CD shops, but I think "The Graveyard" is damn cool. Maybe it's because I love concept albums, and I think the plot of TG is cool, but whatever the reason I can't help but think of TG as a masterpiece every time I stick it on. It's my fav KD CD, but the only other 2 I got are "The Spider's Lullabye" and "A Dangerous Meeting". I'm puzzled as to why I've read so many bad things about TG, when I love it so much. Sorry for all the NDTC but KD and MF are 2 of my favorite bands so I just had to respond. :)

I think of Genesis as being more along the lines of contemporary... When I think of the word progressive as related to music, I consider that to mean the band is highly skilled in complex and interesting music, odd meter (no not always, but more than a little), you know what I mean. DT, Rush, Fates, Superior, yes. Genesis, not in my eyes at least.... just a thought.

    Hello All ....

Long time since I have written here :) Just wanted to say a few things and go over some stuff and whatnot.

First off, I did a whole bunch of cleaning up of my error box and unsubscribing of people this weekend. If you got unsubscribed wrongly, I apologize, but I am in the process of automating the procedure, which will take alot of burden off of me, but also may unsubscribe a few people by mistake. I should have the process pretty much automated once I can spend a few more hours on the program I am writing to deal with the incoming mail. (I didn't enjoy having to go through almost 9000 emails this weekend.)

Secondly, now with all the unsubscribing and stuff, we have 1083 subscribers to the list. Just wanted to let you know.

Thirdly, the archive on ax is currently not working correctly. I am working with Jeroen and the admins at ax on getting this fixed. Once fixed, I will move all of the old archives, plus all the missed ones in to place. I also will make sure to update anything in the archive that needs updating.

Lastly, and this is the most IMPORTANT thing, is the IRC server. I have given some very serious consideration is the last few days about taking it down entirely. I orginally set up this server so that fans of Dream Theater could have fun and be able to actually talk to each other real time. At first it was real cool and still at most times is lots of fun and stuff, but as of late, I have been hearing about some really bad stuff going on on the server and I will not have this kind of shit happening on a server I run. So, basically here's the deal. I have gone to a zero tolerance method on the server. The new way is called one strike your out. If anyone complains about you to me, you will be banned from the server for good. Remember that if there are other people from your domain coming to the server, this will get them banned as well, so you better remember who else you are going to be pissing off if you decide to annoy someone. This is not a call for complaints about people and most likely I will ignore any complaints over the next few days. I know who alot of the troublemakers on the server are and I won't ban them immediately, but leave them with the warning that they better clean up their acts pretty fucking quickly or they won't be on the server anymore. I will not deal with people making death threats, ganging up on people, pissing people off, etc on my server, its not what the server was made for, it was made for people to get together and chat and have fun, so lets keep it that way. Just remember, though I may not be talking, I may be watching.

    That's all from me, Skadz
