hey, hate to bring up this totally non-DT subject, but if anyone bought
the new Machine Head album today, I'd like a review (i.e. how it
compares to Burn my Eyes). Send it to me privately.

Ahoy,
Ahh yes... here it is at long last! After spending an hour and a half
looking hopelessly for Metal in Best Buy, I happened across HitNF, which I
had completely forgotten was out today! I have only listened to it once
through so far, but I I think I like this ablum much more than what I heard
about it. Yes - their sound is different on this album, but if you think
they sold out like Metallica, I believe you're wrong here. Queensyche is
still going strong here, as far as I can hear. The songwriting is still
overall great, good vocals, good musicianship. Sure it's no Metropolis Pt1,
but it's the same band you used to know. While I preferred the music of
Operation:Mindcrime as Queensryche's best stuff, this is still a great
album to me. Hell, if you still don't like it, be happy that they're still
around, even with all the SHIT that became popular around 1993 or so. I
like this album and encourage you to buy it, besides you get 14 songs,
great art, and hey - it's Queensryche! Ryche and roll! Heheheh ... had to
say it.

Who are you to tell them what they should and shouldn't do with
their music? Sure, they may have a dollar or two from you, but you aren't
giving them any respect. That simple. I'm not arguing with your logic...
as long as you concede that it's disrespectful of the band.
I'm only responding because you asked.

It only gets BETTER on that album. Yes.

Nope. :) Besides, this was released before DT released WDADU...
and FW is an influence on DT.

On the contrary... APSoG is WHAT I crave. :)

How very interesting, Mike. In spite of your hopes, you seem to be doing
your best to get the flame war started. Y'see, there are a good number
of people who think that the "music" of now is out of touch with talent
and good taste.
This will be my only post on the subject. I also don't want to see a

Quoth 2387: DT being on Elektra..... EastWest merged with Elektra records
Reply 2387: Elektra, Eastwest, Atco (IAW), and Atlantic have always been under the Warner-Elektra-Atlantic (WEA) moniker, part of the Time-Warner conglomerate. Only WDADU, on Mechanic (MCA), wasn't under the big roof.
Quoth 2385: here's a question for all you fiends: why would labrie say "this is something new we've been working on" refering to "to live forever" on a 1993 boot (dance of eternity) when the song also appears on a 1989 boot as well (consciously unreal)? might they be trying to pass off old unreleased material as all out new material? might they be (gasp) lying? Reply 2385: 1. I hope he meant "friends' instead of "fiends", or has it come to that?? 2. As many Y'Jammers already know, many bands often "preview" new compositions from conception to public release. ACOS is a great example of compository evolution. Another piece that many faithful Y'Jammers will recognize is "The Mirror" on Awake. This previewed in various forms on boots and on the LIT video (where it is un-named) as "A Crack in the Mirror/Puppies on Acid" (I believe these are correct pre-release versions). They are not "trying to pass off old unreleased material as all out new material", but should rather be thought of as 'works in progress' (I think I've heard something like that before).

Right, except the albums they did Sans-Gabriel but still Avec-Hackett were still great albums (Trick of The Tail, Wind & Wuthering, Seconds Out). It wasn't until Hackett left that they started to suck (except Duke). I guess I should say "suck", more like went to a more commercial friendly pop sound.

Most of the album is darker and less "groovy." But the sound is, in general, similar. The instrumental sections of TDE are more in line with the rest of the album than the parts with vocals. IMO, TDE is the least impressive song on the disc (that's not a bad thing though, as it *is* my all-time favourite CD by anybody.) There's a lot of variety on PS, too, so it's hard to say that any one song is representative of the sound.

Heh. Listen to At Fates Fingers again. Try to keep track of the time sig changes. Leave the Past Behind is, IMO, rather repetitive, and I would guess that the band shares my opinion that, while it's a really good song, they had enough better stuff from Parallels on the CD.
I'm personally not too fond of Chasing Time. I thought they had a lot of better songs that didn't appear on it, while putting a lot on there that didn't thrill me as much. It also lacks the continuity of sound that all the albums have, and it's not as much fun to listen to straight through. I think that in order to get the best of Fates Warning, you need to buy all of their albums.

Today I received my bonanza order from Knights of the Round. I would highly recommend this online cd shop. Service was quick and prices were reasonable. The first of the seven cds I bought which I will review is Kamelot - Dominion. Their debut "Eternity" was hailed by some as the reincarnation of Crimson Glory, and labelled by others as a rip-off of CG. Which was true? Well, both had a point. The new release, "Dominion" sees the band losing a bit of the polish, and becoming a bit less Midnightish in the vocal harmonies. This is not to say that the band has lost its progressive sensibilities. On the contrary. The lush keyboards are still around. The Midnight-clone deep within vocalist Mark Vanderbilt's heart of hearts still draws breath - only with a little more of his own character. The instrumentation is still interesting. I guess the sound of the band could be termed a tad bit more "mature" this time around, although most people cringe at such adjectives. Overall, I need more listens to completely judge it, but if you liked Crimson Glory, the first Kamelot album, or just progressive metal of the "Noise" label style, well, buy this. I think Mape was singing the praises, also. Next review will cover Jens Johansson's "Ten Seasons."
GO WINGS!

Hrm... I just got this one today, and I expect the jam to get flooded with "SELL OUT!" complaints. I can understand where people are coming from shouting this, (place big butt here) BUT I can understand the bands' change in music. Perhaps (has it not occured to anyone else?) the bands get bored (God forbid) of the music they write. Personally I have become quite bored of my 300+ CD collection. I crave something new. The music I write in the future will likely reflect this. I think the same thing goes with bands like QR, Rush, DT, etc. It's not so much as progressing, but getting a fresh new start on something. My musical tastes vary sometimes slightly and sometimes dramatically from year to year. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. You can't expect the band to create the same thing over and over again unless they are simple musicians afraid to create a new horizon for us to look toward. Otherwise, they'll just be another one-hit wonder whose songs all sound alike.
I really, REALLY like the new Queensryche. It's experimental to say one thing, and they haven't changed a bit. My favorite vocal harminies are all still there in great abundance, and the music is still undeniably Queensryche's. I also caught a hint of new influences in the music. Anyone else? I swear a couple of times I heard some Saigon Kick in there. This album is somewhat reminiscent of the original Saigon Kick album, I think. I really dig it.
Pity those afraid to explore the new album. HI HO!
Well, I did it. I went out and purchased Bela Fleck and the Fleckstones' Three Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest today. I must say... different. A rockin Banjo player and alot of Jazz influence. The album's very, very good, I must say. At least till I hit the RAP song which totally ruined the great foundation of admiration I'd built on the previous tracks. I skipped that and lived in fear that there was gonna be rap the rest of the album. I HATE RAP. Anyway, they don't rap on any other albums so they? Singing's kewl, just no rap. He had a kewl mellow voice for singing. If I wanted to pay to hear people talk, I'd call my friend's mom long distance for an hour... Otherwise, though I'm not a jazz fan I really enjoyed it. :)

well, about midnight monday, after i concluded for the 14th time I wasn't gonna be able to figure that chem stuff out, trodded off to a record store and picked me up a copy of Hitnf.....based on what i'd heard on this here forum, i was expecting some crazy grungy guitar assault all the way thru the album.......nobody told me about the slow grovvy stuff....
First listen, as I always do, was a sit down with the lyrics in hand and just listen to each song carefully.....and at the end, i was thinking, boy this album is sooooo bland, just really sorta blah, y'know?
But, then I started listening to it in the background while i studied, the way i usually listen to music, as a soundtrack for my life.....and it started grooving into my head, and i really started enjoying it, and now i think it's a pretty darn good album......where after the first listen, I would have given it a 2.5*/5 rating, i think it's up to around 3.25/5 now, and as i keep listening, It'll prolly grow on me even more (after all promised land went from a 2.75 up to a current 4.3/5)
3 least faves, and why (i know you all care so deeply) WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT SONG HERO??? ewwwwwwwwwwwww....but then again, i can just see myself hearing that one time when i'm in a really mellow mood and really *understanding* it, but for now, definitely hands down the worst song on the album for me.....
"all I want": They shoulda brung in Liam Gallagher to sing that bastard, woulda sounded perfectly natural.....
"get a life": suffers from the afterlife syndrome: a perfectly cool song ruined by a cheese-shit chorus.....you gotta get a life, gotta get a life get over it already......
3 best songs so far..... "some people fly": I kept waiting for the bettencourtesque solo to break out in that song, it reminds me so much of extreme.....brought a tear to my eye.....early fave....
"hit the black": this song just plain rocks.....i promised myself i would never do a review just saying something "rocked", but that's the only way to describe "htb"...."i'm going down to a place where I can see all there is to see in me" is tied with "if this is the youth of tomorrow, i'm running the other way" for best lyric on the album, in my opinion
"spOOl": YEAH! a psychotic sounding song! love it when QR does this...gonna get close to you,,,,,promised land....and now spool those other two are in my top 5 QR songs of all time, so I'm guessing that spool's gonna be my eventual fave on this album....
Partha Sarathi Mukhopadhyay
p.s.: i just did get totally burned on that chem stuff, and this was a bit of catharsis, ok? so forgive me my rambling, and just tell me what you thought of the album.....
