Speaking of WASP, they're back!, the new stage show is gonna be
really sick. I heard that they will have a nun tied to a cross, then
    perform
some bloody rituals on her. The old WASP is back.

    >Scary stuff going on over here in CA. Cults, Comets, Aliens??? WTF????

Same stuff going on here in Canada a few days before the CA cult shit, some
guys burned themselves fot the same reasons. Idiots.

Now for my Queensryche review.... Operation:Mindcrime is a great album,
    these
guys really have some amazing talent, the vocalist kicks ass!, the drummer
    rules!.
I heard they just released a new album. It must be even better since they
    had
all this time to evolve. Some guy played a song for me "Get a Life", he
    said it
was by QR. He likes to play jokes on people, for a second it sounded a bit

like QR. QR would never write shit like that I said, I'm sure of it.

Yes, mind you... i'm pointing out that crap breeds crap.... don't think I
    judge all CD's (a book ? :) ) by their covers... I'm not out to start a
flame war here ol chap... and I wouldn't consider Poison mainstream in the
terms of todays mainstream... I still have their tapes, watched the
videos... learned the riffs... Poison was at their height between the years
of (?) '88 -'91... grunge was unheard of then (by the masses) I even used
to be into the likes of Dinosaur Jr., Bad Religion, and others... except I
sold them to a used CD store.

You know, I find this rather amusing. Isn't it strange how it's OK
for someone to listen to bands like Bad Religion, Nirvana, and Pearl
Jam and then after time they "evolve" into this greater musician and
then shun all of that despite the fact that they "used" to like it?
I don't understand. I can still kick back to Nirvana if I want to.
After all, the music's what I buy the albums for, not the artists. I
started into music listening to shit like that. Even though it is
shit, I still like it. I even know the words to most of the songs
off of Dookie for crying out loud. That's the kind of stuff that
made me start out as a musician as pathetic as it may seem to some of
you. It's not a bad thing to cling to my roots, as long as my
branches continue to reach for the sky. :)

Jeez, I gotta quit that philosophical talk. I sound like Confucious.

Yeah, well, this is a Dutch band, and since I live in Belgium (for
the American audience: Belgium is quite near Holland) it was quite easy to
purchase the CD. The only thing I can say is that they kick ass, although
I don't think their music is DT-ish. (there is one song, though, that
reminds me very much of The Ytse Jam (instrumental, crazy riffs and so
on...)) They are all very-talented musicians but the vocalist's voice is
completely diferrent from Labrie's. Anyway it's definitely prog (or, what
is by most people on this list considered prog, in other words, you'll
    like it :-)).

Regarding QR, some bands change significantly over time and are no worse for it. Rush has changed their sound with every album. I love every single one of them because the quality of their song writing and playing has not degraded.

I agree that Empire was a ride on the gravy train for QR. PL was a soul searching album, and though the music wasn't as enjoyable to listen to, it still lived up to their previous quality standards. IMO, the new one doesn't from either a writing or playing standpoint.

Having heard the entire album, I'm voting with my wallet and not buying the thing. I am still a fan of the band, and hope that they snap out of it.

I wanna get in on this 'cause I love Cornell and I truly believe Soundgarden to bethe closest thing to prog grunge will ever offer. Temple of the Dog was HIS PROJECT almots completely as Cornell wrote all songs and I *think* helped produce. Vedder only sat in on "Hunger Strike". This album was from Chris to his good friend from MOther Love Bone whom Eddie replaced. It was an extremely personal project for Cornell. And I think Vedder is a good lyricist. Being a singer, I really concentrate on that, and it seems lyrics are an improtant part of prog music (as opposed to "Peaches", "Glycerine" or any handful of ridiculous atl. lyrics). I also believe Cobain was a really good lyricist, though I hate the livin' hell out of that band. Cobain was the 90's Dylan (whom I also hate)--great lyrics...incredibly crappy music and minimal musical ability. Steve LISA: "Poor Bart. Always chooses rock." BART: "Good 'ol rock. Nuthin' beats rock!"

Save your money on this one. It is basically King of the Kill Pt. II which may be good or bad, depending on how progressive you like your music. I personally hated it and just recently sold it. Gone are the days of the insane speed harmonized solos of deity Jeff Waters. If you are new to the wonderful grace and speed of ANNIHILATOR I suggest you pick up "Never, Neverland" or "Alice In Hell"..then "Set the World On Fire"....then, if you MUST get "King of the Kill" or "Refresh the Demon"...they aren't that bad considering what else is out there...but when you compare it to what Jeff Waters is capable of its a damn shame! The last 2 ANNIHILATOR albums are basically just him and a drummer and its SOOO simple. The solos are okay, but the lyrics sound like an eigth grader wrote them...you know..every single line ryhmes. Dunno why he's putting out this crap..I think he needs to be surrounded by musicians...not just him and a drummer. The first two ANNIHILATOR albums are HIGHLY recommended to any fan of speed/progressive metal.

    > Ivanhoe - recommendations for first purchase?

I just bought an album of theirs "Symbols of Time" that I just can't seem to get into. Musicianship is great but it just doesn't do it for me. I'll sell it to whoever wants it for $18 ..(bought it for $25).

Well, it's not a question of which one is better so much as, what are your musical preferences. Do you liked polish prog metal like Crimson Glory's "Transcendence?" If so, go with "Eternity." If you like something a little more varied, go with "Dominion."

    >Letter X - Time of the Gathering. I currently have 'Born into Darkness'

    Never heard of them.

    >Annihilator - Refresh the Demon. Anyone have this? I never heard of it before.

I have heard nothing good about this album. From what I understand, each Annihilator album has been worse than its predecessor. From the two cds I have, "Alice in Hell" and "Never, Neverland," this certainly has been the case. If this cd is expensive, I would recommend buying Stratovarius' "Episode" instead! You will not go wrong with that. And I guarantee it! (Well, not really, but...)

    >Ivanhoe - recommendations for first purchase?

I am not too familiar with this group, other than the fact they are reportedly a Dream Theater clone. I have one album on cassette somewhere, and it didn't knock my sock off. (Couldn't even knock *one* sock off!)

    >Symphony X - S/T How does it compare to Damnation Game? (also, has anyone found Divine Wings of Tragedy anywhere for < $30???)

Other Jammers know better about this than I.

DANGER DANGER DANGER. This may not be what you are thinking. I have "In Search of Sanity," and I even made reference to it on the #jam Wednesday night (Blood on the Ice - in honor of Patrick Roy, Peter Forsberg and Claude Lemiuex bleeding all over the Joe Louis Arena ice surface - so, do I have a future in IRC play-by-play, fellas?) Anyway, if this cd came out before "ISOS", as I believe it did, this doesn't have the same singer (Grimmett, from Grim Reaper, FYI) and it's some crappy English Death Metal band. From the snippets I remember on usenet, the loyal fans were pissed when "ISOS" came out. Let *that* be your guide. I am pretty sure this "hell" album was pre-ISOS.

Don't worry, my Thunder review will be coming out soon. I know you can't wait.

I actually think Vedder and Cornell are awfully good, but I wanted to mention a couple of lines far more egregious:

"Somebody get me a ladder." Greg Lake, making no sense in "Still...You Turn Me On." It's a great tune, but what the hell is THAT line all about.

And what about "Roundabout?" "Mountains come out of the sky....AND THEY STAND THERE?" What the hell ELSE are they gonna do, Jon? From the same man who brought you "Here is my heart/Waiting for you/Here is my soul/I eat at Chez Nous." "I eat at Chez Nous?" Can someone interpret this one for me?

Kevin Gilbert was guesting on a morning show in LA (Mark & Brian on KLOS) some number of years ago and was making fun of some of these lines. But he's got one of his own -- "We've got dogs and Valvoline/It's a pretty damn good time." I guess, in his defense, that he KNEW he wasn't making any sense, but....glass houses, man.

Neil Peart is my favorite lyricist, Rush is my favorite band, "Distant Early Warning" is one of my ten or so favorite songs in the history of history. But I'm wondering about this one: "We need someone to talk to/And someone to sweep the floors." Sweep the floors? He needs a housekeeper? What?
