The ability to just as easily dispute this statement and declare that they
suck, makes your statement an opinion. Also, you declare this statement as
FACT, just after criticizing me for being "so full of right." Looks like a
clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Nothing I said was proclaimed as fact. I simply was stating that listening
to Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell is like sitting in a college class. It's
torture to me, because aside from having to decrypt what he's trying to
say, I have to do it while listening to his horrid vocal melodies (or lack
there of). Reading Shakespear is not entertaining to me. Listening to PJ
or SG is not entertaining to me. I'm not disputing that they are viewed as
talented to some, however, I can think of many more talented people,
possibly because their talents interest me more. DT always interests me,
even with their lyrics. I love the music and James' melodies, so I can
listen to the lyrics. Most of the time, I don't know what they're about,
but to try to figure out what every word means, would not be entertaining
    to me.

Thanks if that was directed to me- I'm proud to be a weirdo. Now, all's we
can wait for is the new Fates Warning song called "Cherry Pie" and the two
new Dream Theater singles "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" and "Girls, Girls,
Girls" (no offense, old Motley fans). For a real treat, the first single
from Savatage will be Welcome To the Jungle!!!!!!!!

Hi Gang, Just wanted to say thanks to all who responded and gave me recommendations/advice on which discs to buy/not buy. I got some great info that helped me narrow my list down to an order I MIGHT be able to afford! Anyways, I have just 2 more questions if anyone can help:

Could anyone with Symphony X's DWoT tell me what they think of it? I have gotten one messgage praising it very highly, and would like a couple more. Is the concensus that it is better than Damnation game? It is a pretty pricey disc, but will be worth it if it as good/better than DG.

Does anyone here have any newer discs from Vicious Rumors? I have welcome to the ball, and S/T. I would appreciate any thoughts on other discs.

Once again, thanks in advance for any info, and I am grateful for the great info/suggestions I have gotten from here. This is by far the best source I have for finding great new tunes!

Okay, since I started all this shit about the 'dumb' americans I'll forward my reply to D-man. He was the first one to make any comments and I thought it would die out soon, so I mailed him personally. Actually, what I said counts for all of you...

I didn't mean to offend you. I mean, if you would be talking about all the different states in America, I wouldn't have a clue if Nebraska is close to wyoming or so. So just for better understanding, I thought I should have cleared that up. Maybe you know where Belgium is, but that doesn't mean that everybody does. Like I said, I don't know where Nebraska is (well, on the other side of the ocean of course, but hey...:-))

    >I must say that whoever this guy was talking to must have been an idiot! >Most Americans' education levels far surpass the education levels of Foreign >countries. This is due to our countries dedication to acceptable education.

    [soapbox mode on]

Bullshit. Of all of the world's industrialized countries, the education system in the USA ranks DEAD LAST (or close to last anyway) in the maths and sciences. And overall the US education system is rated as one of the worst in studies done by the UN and other organizations. In world wide tests of students in the maths and sciences, Americans didn't even come CLOSE to students in countries like Japan, Singapore, Sweden, Finland, Romania, etc. The literacy and employment rates in the US doen't even compare to that of Scandinavian countries (which are at about 99.9%).

I think the American education system concentrates so hard on brainwashing you that they forget about your real education. The pro-USA (as if no other countries exist on this planet) attitude in the American media (and living in Canada, I see it first hand) is self-evident, and given the way it focuses on American history, American geography, American this, American that, I wouldn't be surprised if the education system does the same thing.

And it's obvious from your message that you, like so many other Americans, think the US is the #1 place to live in the world, that no other countries can compare to it, etc. That's simply not the truth. I can't blame you for loving your country and being patriotic, but you must realize that in reality there are many other countries on this planet that are also great places to live.

Now, I'll probably get about 1000 flames for bashing the US. But let me just say right now, that that is in no means what I'm trying to do. The US is a great country, but it seems like a lot of Americans seem to have attitudes that would suggest it's the ONLY country in the world. That it's the be-all and end-all. This is evident in a couple of the messages I've seen lately. Especially this one.

Anyway, this is way off topic, but I just found some of the above comments to be so far from the truth I had to reply. The American education system is certainly one of the best in the world, but among industrialized countries, it is one of the WORST. So to say the US is dedicated to acceptable education is very questionable. Our education system here in Canada isn't ranked much better than the American education system, and as a student myself, I see it first hand, and it pisses me off. Things could be much better. And the only way the education system in the US will ever be improved is if more Americans wake up and realize that it needs a lot of improvement. As long as you think certain things in the US are automatically great just because it happens to be the USA, those things are never going to be improved.

I think this is one reason that the band didn't want the boots going around. They (and I totally agree with them) don't want you to form your opinions of the new material from an unofficial third rate copy.

I don't think this dude took that joke that seriously folx. What he said sounds like a joke to me... besides... there are plenty of albums out there that are GREAT that have no one on the drum kit.

Don't get all bent out of shape because Europeans don't know every little state in America. Guys, I don't EXPECT you to know everything about Europe, that's why I put the damned remark in my post in the first place. Actually, in the future, I hope that the Americans will do the same, so that we, Europeans, will know what you guys are talking about.

No, I think you're the fucking idiot, Cook.

Those questions are a hell of a lot more obscure (especially for a European as opposed to a Canadian) than asking where Belgium is. Belgium is a fucking country for christ's sake. How anyone could not know where it is is beyond me. There's a little bit of a difference between knowing the provinces/states/whatever in a country and knowing where the hell the country itself is! Perhaps you may not know where some little countries in Africa are, but to not know where a country like Belgium is, well, you should be ashamed of yourself.

The fact that Americans actually waste their time memorizing the capitals of all the states (isn't that what an Atlas is for?) and other such useless facts that can be looked up instead of learning useful SKILLS, explains why the US is so far behind in the maths and sciences.

And I believe whoever posted that list of stupid things Americans have said to him. Some Americans actually think it snows year round in all of Canada. Some Americans are shocked that there are parts of Canada that are actually as far south as the Northern tip of California. I've heard stories from my friends about how they went on vacation to places in the southern US, and some of the people they met there were surprised they already owned bathing suits! I've even heard stories about Americans coming to visit Toronto in the summer and thinking they'd need to bring a heavy jacket.

Now, 99% of Americans probably wouldn't be so stupid, but considering we hear things like this regularly, it's no surprise that Americans have the reputation they do. I saw this one episode of Jeopardy where they had a category on Canada. One question asked what the capital of the Northwest Territories is. All three of the contestants responded, and none of them got it. Two of them picked cities that weren't even in the NWT.

    >IMHO, QR are definitely peers with Cobain ... I think QR are the >better musicians, but both bands are rock bands, both are Seattle >bands, and both are popular nationally.

By this argument, Hendrix and Soundgarden would be musical peers.

    >It's true. They were both professional musicians at the same time, >from the same area, and in the same (very general) genre of music >(perhaps more so now, judging from what I've heard about HitNF).

Perhaps they are growing a bit more toward the grunge sound. Or, more accurately IMO, toward simpler song structures.

    >From what I understand, the band NEVER hung out with the "grunge" >crowd and there was a general dislike from Cobain towards the "other" >metal scene. Just hearsay...Anyway, check out the film called "Hype" >(recently discussed here) and see how grune was only one small part >of the scene.

This is the best assessment I've seen. Remember, QR got their start in the early 80s... at least 5 years before the grunge scene got going. They also were (and still are, maybe less now with HitNF) a metal band, a very different scene. Calling QR and a grunge band peers is like saying a long-distance runner senior who lettered in track is peers with the quarterback of the 7th grade varsity football squad in the same town. In a sense, you could call grunge bands the "little brothers" of Queensryche.

My brief view on HitNF: It's got simpler songs, but most of them are pretty decent and catchy. There are even a couple that hearken back to Rage for Order. I just don't know if it's where I'm at musically. I'll probably grow to like it over time, but I doubt it will grow to be my favorite Queensryche album.

As an American, I agree with much of this post, and like you, I was confused that an American actually posted that the U.S. educational system is the best, when we have so many illiterate and unemployed people here. However, you simply can't argue the fact that the U.S. has made the most advancement in our short 200+ years of existence. In the past century alone, the U.S. discovered flight, crossed the Atlantic by air, put a man on the moon, and sustained life in space for 6+ months. These are the greatest advancements since the invention of the wheel. Plus, we have Dream Theater.
