I've heard an advance copy of the Album Of The Year, and I could almost
definitely say that the title is in no way sarcastic (esp. since we
probably won't see a DT album this year). Think of the brilliant Real
Thing, crossed with the vastly-underrated King For A Day... with a
little bit of Angel Dust thrown in. The album has a lot of variety, and
some damn good songs as well.

    To answer Rahul's question:

What I meant by 'memorable vs.forgettable' was more quantitative than
qualitative. What I (and suspect others) like so much about prog is that
it doesn't follow any kind of formula really, as most radio oriented pop
does etc. And from that comes a tendency to have longer songs that don't
depend on that momentary seduction of a hook in the chorus. So if a
progressive group can borrow a little from that pop mentality, and
integrate it into their music, I think it's the best of both worlds.

It doesn't *bother* me that I rarely am humming "Close to the Edge" while
in the car. However, when listening to a prog tune for the first time, I
think it's testament to the writing if I find myself humming something
from it after the first listen. I really like that direction.

To sum up: I don't think it's bad necessarily if a song doesn't have an
ear-candy hook. When we buy a CD like Close to the Edge, I think it's
safe to say that we're in it for the long haul, and that we're not
looking for a quick fix. However, if the music happens to catch our ears
from the first listen, that's not a bad thing either.

Hi my name's woot glad to meet you

I'm still way behind on jams, but i figured i'd drop a line to all the
homies just to let you know that i'm not dead.

I recently attended my first 'Tallica concert, complete with exploding
amps, the swinging wire guy, the falling off the ladder guy, and the
flaming guy. Even though I knew it was coming I was very impressed with
it. I especially like how they all gathered at one end of the stage and
played the last song (motorbreath) by the light of a few 60-watts hanging
from the rafters. Are all concerts as loud as metallica concerts? Not
that loud is bad or anything, but I still can't hear as well as I should.

If anyone is interested, the setlist (in no particular order) was:

    new stuff:

    King Nothing
    Hero o' the Day
    Until it sleeps
    Ain't my Biznitch
    Wasting my Hate

    Old stuff:

    Motorbreath
    Green Hell
    So What
    Fade to Black
    Master o' Puppets
    One
    Fight F wit F
    Creeping death
    For Whom the B t's
    Nothing Else Matters
    Enter Sandman
    Seek n' Destroy

I'm sure there's more that i can't remember too. they also had little
excerpts of a bunch of different songs that they didn't feel like playing
the whole thing, and Jason had a pretty cool bass solo.

Corrosion of Conformity opened and they were so good that i almost wish i
hadn't sold their tape. they played deliverance, albatross, clean my
wounds, and some stuff off the new album. almost an hour in all.

in other news, Extreme's III sides now officially kix nadz. except for #1
which is kinda pointless and #7 which is way too sappy, the rest of the 70+
    mins is very good stuff.

Skip this next part cause you don't care:

I recently placed 5th in the discus among the biggest schools in the state
at this weekend's Idaho High School Track & Field Championships. I'm not
bragging or anything, just letting you know why I haven't been posting very
much lately. Also, 3rd place was only a foot farther than my throw was.
    Anyway back to the ranch.

ps does anybody else have a problem with their amp dying when it's on clean
tone? It works fine when i have the dirt on, but as soon as i need clean,
my amp shorts out. I'm pretty sure it'd not the cord. any help from all
    you hairball wannabees is appreciated.

about 50 jams ago was my 1500th jam! yip! yip!

woot is wearing brand new shorts and they are already chafing his A

I know a few people beat me to it, but I have to give a big "thumbs up" for
the new Clockwork CD, "Search". They pack a lot of great, progressive metal
    into this 4-track release.

If I had to compare it to one of the bands that have been discussed on the
Jam, I'd have to say it would be Shadow Gallery. Cool keyboard sequences,
great chops guitarwise and very solid rhythm section holding it all together.
The vocals is lightyears ahead of the "Weaving Web of Time" epic (and he
could have the longest name in rock! :)

Definitely worth the $8, especially if you want to help support progressive
rock. Can't wait to see what these guys can do with the financial backing of
    a major label!

    Hi gang -

Just a quick question here... I recently saw a full-page ad for the new Amorphis EP "My Kantele". I got the impression from the ad that it has already been released, but when I raced down to my local CD store (who has every other Amorphis release except for "Priviledge Of Evil") there was nary a new EP to be found. Does anyone know for sure if it's out yet or not? If so, how is it? As if I don't already know... if the material is circa "Elegy", it's gotta rule! Thanx!

    Laterz, friends... Matt T.

BTW... I'm going through withdrawl symptoms here... still no "Precious Things" and I'm number 54! Aaaargh... :-)

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with some decent quality, but low-priced (I'm not rich, after all :), effects for bass. I got a little info on the Zoom 506 multi-effects pedal, with mostly good comments. I haven't actually tried out anything yet, but wanted to see if I could get any tips before I go out and actually try some things. Please e-mail me privately if you could. Thanks.

It might still come with the fan club subscription. Ask Mr. Elliot. Aside from that, I assume no DT fan in their right mind would part with that CD unless the price is mighty high.

    > Also, can anyone with the John Petrucci guitar video send me a >review...I'd like to know if it's worth the $50.

Um....YYYYEEEESSS!! It's very worth it. This video covers all aspects of playing, from "simple" warm up that take years to learn to extended legato and sweep picking runs that only the master Petrucci can execute.

    > Lastly, does anyone have the tab for ACOS...Mainly just the first >distorted guitar part after the acoustic.

All of this on the big .56 (or higher ;) gauge B string:

    0-7-8-0-5-7-0-3-5-0-2-3-0-3-0-7-8-0-5-7-0-3-5-0-2-3-0-3*

that * means artificial harmonic. I think it's at the three, that's where I play it anyways.

Anyone ever slapped some .11 gauge strings on their guitar and tuned down to C? Man, this is an awesome sound. Very heavy, without the Korn-y tone that usually comes with most big B strings. Me likes it :)

Peace and love, and good happiness stuff, ~Vince

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

On this black metal thread that Carlo started and now it's kinda snowballing, there is some need for some definition about musical genres...

First Carlo said: >>HAIL IN FLAMES and DISSECTION!!!!!!

    >From: matt rosin <msr7146@unix.tamu.edu>

    >you should check out Dimmu Borgir. they are far superior to either of these >bands. you also need to check out Cradle Of Filth. > >as for Dark Tranquility... they're good, but, quite frankly, they're kind of a >rip-off of My Dying Bride, who are far superior in all respects.

In Flames isn't black metal. They belong to a relatively tiny subgenre of death metal called NWOSDM. Anyone remember NWBOHM? Well, this one means "new wave of Swedish death metal". The NWODSM scene is located around Gothenburg in southern Sweden and practically all the guys play in every band of the scene. NWODSM mixes death metal vocals, melodic speed metal riffing and Scandinavian traditional folk music. Other noteworthy NWODSM bands are Dark Tranquillity, Edge of Sanity and (even if they aren't Swedish) Amorphis.

Cradle of Filth isn't black metal (anymore) either. They have been (around their first album "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh"), but the latter two efforts have been what they call gothic dark metal. I don't really know how to pigeonhole Dissection, I haven't been listening to them much, but I think the way my ears hear it is brutal death metal. With lousy sounds.

Somehow I fail to see how you can compare MDB and Dark Tranquillity. Well, maybe it's just me. :)

Me neither. I've heard AtG several years ago and they totally unimpressed me. They sounded like crap back then, and I usually lose my interest after such a listening experience. They may have developed, of course. I just doubt it.

    > The author says In Flames is a cross between 80's style NWOBHM, Northern >Swedish folk music, and death metal. Any help would be >greatly appreciated.

Sure. If you like Amorphis, get EVERYTHING by In Flames. You will love it. 101 per cent guarantee. Technically, In Flames is possibly even better than Amorphis (and that one took a LOT of me, I'm a Finn and we don't exactly walk around giving favorable comments about Swedes :)), but if you are VERY averse to death metal vocals, give them two listens before you buy the albums. Maybe the best way to introduce yourself to their music is to get their EP "Subterranean", which includes IMO their best song "Stand Ablaze". "Jester Race" is absolutely fantastic as well. Their debut, "Lunar Strain" isn't quite as good as the other two.

    >BTW - just picked up Apocalyptica (Four Cellos playing Metallica) - that's >some wild shit, but I really dig it! Laterz...

Hey! This guy has some great music taste! :) Hey Matt, get your hands on Therion's "Theli". You will love it. I give you my money back guarantee. If you don't like "Theli", I will buy the cd off you. :) In fact, email me, I just might have some other bomb proof recommendations for you.

In fact, as interesting as Apocalyptica may sound at first, it actually is pretty boring after the fifth listen.

    >From: Phillip <pkish@sprynet.com> >Subject: The beautiful world of black metal...

    >I originally heard bands like Emperor and Mayhem, the so-called "black >metal" gods and was NOT impressed at all. Sounded like a wall of >shrieking...

Now here's the first one (hi Phillip!) who is actually talking about BLACK metal.

    >Then I discovered Samael....WHOA!!! Complex music, dark vocals, satanic >lyrics.....I have heard this to be classified as Black Metal and the >vocals aren't the regular shrieks I'd heard before but closer to death >metal...Very EXCELLENT BAND!!! I have only heard their latest two CDs.

"Passage"? No black metal here. Dark metal with a drum machine and some industrial influeces. BTW, if you wish to keep your hearing, never attend a Samael gig. They have absolutely no clue how loud one can play indoors without deafening the listeners.

    >Next up I heard Cradle Of Filth...this was indeed quite good stuff with >the shrieking vocals but still the music was better than decent and it >did have a certain evil atomsphere that is cool to me. Lyrically, it's >not too shabby either although I could do without all the vampire crap.

The vampire crap is there because like their music, the lyrics are also influenced by 18th century British literature. BTW, in case anyone has a clue how the hell Dani produces the infamous shrieks, would you please explain it to me as well. Especially I would like to know how this is executed on stage.

    >The packaging of Cradle of Filth in particular was very nicely done with >lots o..hehehe..neat pictures and lyrics and quotes and stuff...

Actually, some time ago a dude got arrested in England for wearing a Cradle of Filth tee shirt. If you want to hear the detals, email me. The full story is not something that can be discussed on the jam.
