Hello,
Got my OZZFEST tickets in the mail from TM today only to find out the
field is General Admission! And I called Vermont for nothing... Oh, and
since I know you all really like to hear about various musical
experiences, I thought I'd drop you a review of two recent ones for me:
last Friday I saw Collective Soul at the Tradewinds in NJ, and yesterday
I bought Sammy Hagar's new album. I can hear all your groaning from
here... heheh...
Collective Soul surprised even me. I'm a big fan anyway, but they threw
in a couple of surprises and played a lot of their heavier stuff (yes,
they have some heavy stuff) which I didn't expect. The sound mix started
off pretty poor though, with the rhythm guitar way too far back. Also at
one point, there was a second of ear-splitting feedback and I felt my
ear pop, PAINFULLY. You can now count me in with the legions of earplug
wearers now, I've learned my lesson. For details, if you care, you can
e-mail me. But the highlight of the show (don't read if you plan on
seeing them) was when they said they were doing a cover song like they
did on every tour. But this one was one even the lead singer never
thought they would play, but "it's just so damn fun". He said we'd have
to sing the chorus though: "I'm riding on the rails of a Crazy Train".
Hysteria and an amazing performance ensued...
On to Sammy... I have mixed feelings about this album. For one, its way
to mellow. Even mellower than his past solo stuff. While there are some
amazing songs (Leaving the Warmth of the Womb is an early frontrunner),
on the whole this just reeks of generic. I was actually looking for a
different album, but couldn't find it, so I got this. I don't think I'll
return it, but I can't say I recommend it.
Oh, and I'm still in search of NY/NJ area Rush and Queensryche tickets
if anyone cares to part with them. Next show: Cheap Trick, June 7 at the
Birch Hill. Why can't they play in the city again...:( OOOOH! Another
Jam just came in! Lunch time reading (and writing...)

And I love it. I don't know much about these guys, could somebody recommend
another record/s with them and perhaps give me some general info?
I've been recommended to buy King Crimson CDs too, any suggestions which
one? I understand there are quite a few to choose from.

This is exactly why I posted what I did...I thought it was more of that
bullshoot whining about James and his voice. Which in my eyes is
getting kinda' irritating, but that's my own opinion. That's

I'm surprised that record companies haven't started using "mainstream"
as a label. :) When you think about it though, half the bands that are
called "alternative" aren't even close. Collective Soul, of whom I am a
fan, is just straight rock. As is Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (though a
bit heavier). The labels that companies use are so indiscriminate that
they should abandon them and let the listeners create them. Seeing Van
HAlen in the metal section at stores and Megadeth in the hardcore
section always gets a laugh out of me. The only label that works is jazz
because its so easily definable (but also has subdivisions up the
wahzoo).

see, i just had to reply. i have this rare medical condition which requires
me to call someone a dumbass at least once daily. if i don't, i start
having seizures and run around screaming obscenities at light fixtures and
generally cause quite a scare at the office. it's not a pretty sight.

These are the rumors I've heard:
1. On European Headbangers ball last fall Slash said that he had 20-30
songs written and the other band members also had quite a lot and that a
album should be out in the summer of -97, I also read something like this
in guitarworld. If Axl didn't like Slash's songs they'd appear on a new
Slash's Snakepit album (the first one was great).
2. Then I heard that Slash guit/got kicked and Axl was going to be rythm
guitarist, also heard rumors about Zakk Wylde replacing Slash.
3. I recently heard that Axl bought the copyright to the name "Guns N'
Roses" and is starting a new band by the same name.
Points 2 and 3 are just rumors, nothin confirmed.
The five best metal vocalists (my VERY HUMBLE opinion):
JLB (no comment)
Ian Guillan ("child in time" - man)
Jaymz (maybe not technically,and maybe not live, but he has feelings)
Chris Cornell (if this counts as metal, i would say "bad motorfinger" does)

As a veteran of this list, I would much rather answer newbie questions
which will help create a fanatical DT fan, than just scream "read the FAQ",
and continue bickering about what belongs and what doesn't belong on this
list. Not that reading the FAQ is a bad thing, but I have seen it severely
outdated at times (which may not be the case now, because I have not read
it in quite awhile). I know that when I joined this list many moons ago, I
asked every single question that was on the FAQ, before someone finally
told me where to find it. Seriously, if we want the list to contain mostly
DT content, but we don't want anything discussed which is in the FAQ, then
that doesn't leave much room for anything but bickering, which is mostly
what we have now.
I propose shutting down the FAQ for a short time, and having an open forum
for DT questions and answers. This will not only enlighten some less
informed members to necessary information, but I think it will surprise you
how much even a veteran can learn. And among other things, I think it will
certainly improve the quality of conversation on this list.
This idea will involve patience from both veterans, who will have to deal
with answering (or at least viewing) questions that he has seen 100 times;
and non-veterans who will have to structure intelligent questions with the
intent to learn something about a great band. The thread of burning JLB on
stage, does not qualify as an intelligent thread, and I think even the
person who started it would agree.
While I was on a short hiatus, I did fall very behind on some of the
material that was popping up, namely the Christmas fan club CD, which I
would still like to get my hands on, and the Mike Bahr projects. However,
it seems that whenever I asked a question about any of this material
lately, I still had to filter through 100 messages a day, to read possibly
5 with valued information. I would like for this to change. Even a
message with only information that you already know, has value.
I'm not suggesting that only stuff that is important to me, has value. But
I am proposing that when composing a message, stop and question whether the
content is valuable to the list.
Let me know what you think about the open Q&A proposition.

Yah I believe that James is a better singer. But, don't knock Dominici

I think he sings pretty well, compared to a lot of singers.
Yall don't need to compare every single
band/singer/guitarist/drummer/ect.. to Dream Theater and then say they
suck because they don't have 'magic fingers' or powerful lungs.
So, I'll keep my 'When Dream and Day Unite', the Dominici version, and
I'll continue to enjoy it thank you.

wouldn't have so many jams to read if we were just restricted to talking
about Dream Theater, and silly little recipes you can do with LaBrie
cheese. If ya don't want to know about black metal, then...read past the
messages heh. Simple as that. :) I know where yer comin from though. I
kinda get annoyed when everyone starts talking about Fates Warning,
(I listened to some sound samples, and i wasn't impressed by the way...of
course Dream Theater took an acquired taste as well...but Caught in a
Web was the first DT song that I ever heard and I was drawn in right

ELP peaked on Brain Salad Surgery. That is the only ELP album which I
like all the songs. Also, there is this german band, Truimvirat, that
is sortof an ELP clone. IMO, their album _Spartacus_ surpasses any on
ELP albums put together. A lot of fans say that Illusions of a Double
Dimple is their best. Pompeii is one of their later albums before they
fizzled out. It is more pop but still has some great piano.

I must emphasize that those with extremely late CDs are the
exception and not the norm... it's just like a car dealership... every day
they hear from a hundred people whose cars broke down, but there are
thousands on the road that they don't hear from because the car is working
just fine.
Anyway I have the re-sends for Dave Hatlee and James Mohr already
taken care of, among others. I have to re-send about 2-3% of all parcels.
The monetary loss is only an annoyance because postal claims reimburses me
for the loss several weeks down the road.
I don't mind re-sending immediately and taking the temporary loss
because I know my customers deserve it, and I hope everyone else doesn't
mind me being a bit slow to deliver... mainly due to the high volume of
orders. Remember, Marcel Berkhout's Carpe Diem CD took almost a year to
ship, and the Van Halen UNCD took well over a year to ship, and I've
never even come close to taking that long.
