It is due to an unmistakable fact that your anima has superceded your
idosychrous vaccicule and there are aggresive cedophytes altering the
electroprothetic impulses of your rural fronterial cortex. This can
be interdicted with 500 cc of psuedotrimethylglucosium phosphate
injected directly into your appendectimal serrutorium, resulting in a
philanthrofication of profitable econimic inenduities into the bovine
enclosure encapsulated in my denim depository.

Hi all! Just had to broadcast a few items to the Jam because it's
    easier this way.

Jeff Esshaki, Jai John, Patricia McLoughlin - your DW discs are already in
the mail as of now, but your PT discs are not as of yet. It's anyone's
guess why, but this reversal of shipping order usually doesn't happen.

Dan Tarquin - your tapes are on the way (re-sends).

Syrinx, Sean McFee, all cover artists - resends are on the way.

Matt Erwich - can you get in touch with me? I think I owe you money.

The rest of you - Count your blessings! Nothing has gone wrong with your
order yet! :) And an update will be put up shortly.

The reason there's no DT content right now is because there's
fucking nothing to talk about with regard to DT right now!! Duh! Once
something significant happens, we'll have tons of shit to post about.
Until that time happens, there's nothing wrong with related band posts,
related topic posts, and even general friendly back'n'forth.

Any of you veterans ever think to yourself, "Why do I try?"...

Say, is anyone still on here that was on here before I was? I
believe I subscribed in October 1993.

How the fuck did we get on the topic of rap???

    Anyhoo,
This DT/Electra gig. I think Electra needs to get thier heads out of
thier asses. Isn't Silverchair under one of thier labels? I hear the
new single on the radio, and it just reeks freshly-wetted-rolled in it's
own shit-dog hair. Yeah, my opinion's purely subjective, I totally
understand, but when some whiny teenager's up there cracking his voice in
front of the microphone while thrashing his single chord on his custom,
limited edition series Roswell Rhoads guitar (Has anybody here played
one? I'm interested in reviews from yous guitarists out there), I don't
want to endure it or "let it grow on me" because MTV says they're
cool...I turn the fucking radio OFF!

And the same deal applies in this new Bush single. My GOD does this guy
jump out of key and out of song.

My point is that these "new alternative" bands don't have any soul to
thier music. If it's one thing that I totally dig, it's the soul of a
song that sways your emotions, like that of Learning to Live, Voices,
Mirror/Lie, Nothing Else Matters. It's a rush gained from the
combination of tempo, groove, and textures, and some more of that theory
shit that the guitarists dread that these bands don't realize they lack,
or maybe they do realize they lack it but the record company wants them
to play crap, or they don't get their money. (Ahhhhh, Eyes of a Stranger
just started on my li'l radio, KUPD rules).

Vince and I were discussing how annoying it is to endure this shit when
it comes on the radio, how boring it sounds, how uninspiring it is, and
how boring it is to play. Take the Time, on the other hand, is one of my
all-time fave songs, and I've only taken a look at the song/tab book and
haven't learned it yet, it's not an E pentatonic that gets the job done
in this song....try playing something in C# minor for a change, and see
what I mean. It's a little different than slamming that pick through an
Em chord over and over and over...it's a hell of a change, and I find it
    refreshing.

To tie a little ribbin around this whole post and just sum bring it back
to my original dilemma, I believe it's an un-solvable one that's only
been bitched about several millions of times (my God, there's even a
couple movies with this conflict--Airheads and Ford Fairlane) and will
continue to piss off the musicians struggling to make ends meet yet try
to maintain thier integrity. It's all about money. Soul doesn't mean
shit. Scales don't mean shit. If shit means money, shit means shit.

On the lighter hand, I see a rather refreshing onslaught of rockers
crashing through the airwaves lately, with bands like Offspring, Foo
Fighters, and Naked. It's nice to know that when the waves of rock
trends pass over, there's a comfortable layer of great metal to remind
people what soul and integrity is...until the next wave of Big Trend
comes around. Hello Ozzfest and Cryptic Writings!

Just FYI: You US guys are an album late. The third Enchant album is
out here in Europe. I just forgot the name of the thing ;-)
They also played one of the new songs on the tour with DT. (wow, DTC)

Oh, and don't get CDs for Dr. Mosh. I bought a "Wounded"-CD for him
*months* ago and he waited till "Wounded" was released in the US
    instead.

Slash's Snakepit album is more probable. They've been promising a new
Guns N' Whatnot album since the summer of '94, it'd be my bet there's
nothing more coming from that camp. You will probably get Axl's solo
album under the name of Guns N' Roses, if anything.

Not that I care anymore though, I ceased to be their fan sometime
around 1993-1994, where something terrible :-) began happening to my
formerly so small world of music.

..and the older I got, the more I played with my weenie again, but
then, that's just the way it goes.

You guys are funny...you (myself included) want the whole world to be open minded about DT and all that they have to offer, yet some of you are too ignorant to realize that rap is an art form and also means a lot to a lot of people. How hypocritical. Some people on this list should really grow up and have respect.

Ok, I finally got APSOG. Or, actually I've had it for quite some time now, but I wanted to listen to it over and over again before saying anything.. And now I would say I've reached enlightenment. It's the best CD ever made. Period. Sure, comparing it to I&W is hard, but at least at the moment I think APSOG is superior..

I won't write a full review (I'll save that for the upcoming FW mailing list) but I'll just say that parts 6 and 8 are my favourites at the moment.

Finally, have you guys noticed that FW actually comments on KevMo's parting ways with DT in the song? It's in Part 5, towards the end:

"I will not apologize, I will not defend any Moore, any Moore."

    bad joke, I know.

Have a nice summer folks, I'll be signing off in a day or two.

    go rangers, antti

I'm on a roll! Two posts in a day.. Maybe it has something to do with the examination sessions being over for the semester.

The topic doesn't refer to Learning to Live in Tallinn in the sense that I'd have to learn to live here, I'm just fine thanks, but rather the fact that this particular Dream Theater song can be heard in Tallinn's biggest and most popular nightclub every night.

They play the climax part of the instrumental section during their much-touted laser show at "Club Dekoltee" here.. Raitz might've heard it too, though I don't think he's the Dekoltee-going type. Neither am I, though, just for the record, I prefer Club Hollywood :)

And, because of this, DT even got played on national television.. One of the three Estonian channels I get featured the "Miss Eesti" beauty pageant early this week, and before and after each commercial break you could hear the instrumental climax to LTL.. Mainly because the pageant was held in Club Dekoltee and they showed part of the laser show before and after each commercial break.

Have I bored everyone to death yet? I could go on about how they sometimes play Dream Theater in the Finnish sports news.

    Maybe another time.

how much rap have you actually listened to?!?! i mean, i'm not a big fan of rap, but at least i give it a serious, open listen if i *do* hear it. if you are willing to categorize all rap as mindless, low IQ music, then you are just ignorant. i suggest that you guve a serious listen to artists like the fugees, arrested development, and nas... if you still think it's all mindless after *openly* listening to those artists, then it says more about *you* than it does about rap.

    >Generally try to make themselves look tough even tho' most >of them are under 150 lbs.

just like many, if not most metal and rock musicians who create a larger-than-life image around *their* music. what the hell is your point? you can't honestly tell me that dave mustaine's attitude and is remotely justified by his physical stature.

    >> blasting at high volumes out of their car (usually a real beater) windows >> to annoy passersby.

again, i fail to see how this is different from what a lot of metal and rock fans do.

    >don't like rap. In addition to what Adam said, I hate it when people refer >to what rappers do as singing. Are they dumb or something? I don't hear >any musical notes. I also hate that rappers become famous for doing >something that almost anyone else can do (unless you stutter or something, >although that could become a new style of rap).

ok, this is bullshit. i guarantee you that most people cannot do what good rappers do. it takes an incredible sense of rhythm and vocal inflection to achieve the sound that they wish to achieve. defining singing by western-art-music concepts of melody is absurd.

    >I also hate it when >somebody who says that he/she listens to rap rips on metal. I mean, people >have different tastes, but don't rip on real music when the music you >listen to is close to not even being music.

ok, this is just utterly hypocritical. if you think for a second that you're not doing exactly the same thing, than i feel truly sorry for you.

    >difference between any of the CDs he has (which are a lot), but he just >tells me that I CAN'T HEAR THE DIFFERENCE. It really bewilders me how he >says they are all different when there's no significant difference between >most of them.

your friend is right. just like you're right when someone says to you that all of d.t.'s progressive instrumental sections all sound the same and you respond by saying that he's not hearing the intricacies. it's the SAME GOD-DAMN THING!

i'm sick of this bullshit, so listen up, people: it is a fundamental fact of life that if someone is not familiar with a musical form or genre, they will think it all sounds the same, and the sounds will all blend together. if you don't think this is true, than i suggest studying musical forms from around the world. different cultures and groups hear music in fundamentally different ways. it takes an active listener to discover how it is one listens to different forms of music and to discover how and why it is how it is, because each form demands different things of a listener.

if you aren't willing to take the time to learn something about a particular form of music, just keep your fucking mouth shut about it and don't pretend like you know the first thing about what you're talking about, because you literally have no clue. if it all sounds the same to you, then it's a sure sign you haven't taken the time to *seriously* learn about it.

if you don't know anything about it, then shut the fuck up until you do.
