This is my opinion about metallica's last three (possibly 4) albums...
Metallica are sacrificing integrity for professionalism...
Professionalism is success in your line of work.
Everyone wants to work less for more cash, even Metallica, and now they are
doing it. It's not my right to say if this is good or bad...but I don't
listen to anything from "And Justice etc" onwards. You can't take away the
first three albums...ground breaking and often emulated...but now they make
more dollars by not selling albums to me...so good luck...and good riddance!
as for Megadeth...same thing applies (just not as cahsed as Metallica!).
Rust in Peace ruled...I haven't even listened to Cryptic Writings...
Priorities, eh?
Cheer

Two that I like, but I don't believe either are around anymore:
Chastain (Leather Leone singing) - borderline prog but not really
Saraya (Sandi Saraya singing) - straight upbeat rock and roll
That's as close as I can get at the moment ;)
NP: Saraya - "When The Blackbird Sings..."

Wow, I haven't heard these guys since they opened for Dream Theater in Rochester, NY for I&W. I wasn't expecting much from them (I mean... the name..."Galactic Cowboys" doesn't inspire confidence in musical ability :). But I was really impressed with them! I haven't bought any of their albums...what is a good one to start with?
Btw, the coolest part about that concert was the chorus on "Take The Time". Right before the chorus, the Galactic Cowboys ran on stage and sang the chorus with DT :) It really rocked, and it really got the crowd riled up. Then again, it doesn't take much to get the crowd riled up during that song ;)
Btw, the worst part of that concert was the other opening band, which had a member of Ratt (? I think) in it. :P I caught a drumstick from their drummer and a girl who came to see this band actually tried to fight me for it. I fought for a second, and then I thought...why do I give a rat's ass about this band and gave it up. :) That's ok, though, I got one of JP's picks later on!

My life is complete, I have seen DT live, finally! In this post I will try to convey what a wonderful experience this was, though I probably not do it justice. I left work yesterday at noon so that I would have plenty of time to prepare for the best concert of my life. First thing that I did when I got home was jump behind my drum kit to try to relax a little. Then straight into the shower, into my room to get dressed and finally start my pre-concert check list(earplugs, tickets, Remo Snare drum head for MP to sign, camera, but no Official Ytsejam T-shirt yet!) So as I leave the house, I swing down past the garage to check the side door that we never use and what do I behold; a package stuffed in the door containing my Ytse-T-shirt!!!(thanks Pat Griffin) It actually arrived 7 days ago but the freggin' mail man couldn't be bothered to bring it to either the front or back doors, so he decided to put it in a door that never gets used! I'll kill him! Anyway, that worked out, so - have shirt - will travel. I headed over to pick up the rest of my car group which consisted of my keyboard player, Vanessa, and her parents.(Fans down at the show were impressed that someone's parents were interested in DT, including Derek S. who we met before the show, coming out of the tour bus!) So we arrived down at Metropol at 4:30 and then walked a couple of blocks to get something to eat. I didn't even wait for the rest of my group to finish eating before I took off and headed back to get in line. I got back around 5:15 and asked if anybody had seem DT enter the building yet and everyone said "no". I could hear the techs doing sound check on the drums so that kept me occupied for awhile. I didn't see any Jammers before the show but I did talk to another drummer(Brian). Around 6:30(?), DT finally shows up riding in taxicabs(from the airport?) and grab their gear from the tour bus. We were in line directly in front of the bus door and got to meet Derek then. He asked how everyone was doing and we(mostly Vanessa) got to talking. We asked if they would be playing at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach and he said probably later in December.(Vanessa's brother-my lead guitarist is working down there and we told him that we would visit when DT came through.) Anyway, all the fans were super considerate of the band trying to get their gear and get into Metropol for sound check, and everyone just relaxed and let them go about their business. The whole band walked right by us and I leaned out to wave at Mike P. He saw my Ytsejammer T-shirt and stopped, unbuttoned his TAMA jacket to show me that he had his Ytse T-shirt on too, and then shook my hand!!! My night could have ended right there and I would have been satisfied! To meet my drumming idol was one of the best experiences of my life! Thanks Mike! So DT finally got into Metropol and I think that they only had time for one song during sound check(Under A Glass Moon). The gates opened around 7:30 and I had only one thing on my mind; getting in the front row! No problem. After handing over my tickets, I made a B-line for the stage. I ended up about 5 feet off to the left of the center of the stage.(Right in front of where John M. would later be.) Now on to the start of the show! Big Wreck started playing around 8:10. I personally thought that
they were a decent group. I'd classify them as sort of bluesy-rock and definitely better than alot of the alternative garbage bands that have swamped the music industry currently. This was backed up by Vanessa and her parents who thought the same as me. The crowd was receptive for the most part except for a few people who were yelling from behind us. The lead guitarist/singer said to them: "Man if you only knew what we had to do to get here." I think people forget what bands have to go through(DT included) to establish a name for themselves. So I listened subjectfully to BW and thought that they did a good job. As a side note about fans thinking that DT should open for a bigger band, I would give this a resounding NO WAY. I want to hear DT play 2 and a 1/2 hours plus in a smaller venue rather then hear them play 45 minutes in an arena! I couldn't recognize the DT demos that they played between bands other than "Where are you now" and "The way it use to be". Definitely cool songs though! Of course, the last song was "Rooster" and then the real music began!!! The lights went down and the roadies unveiled Derek's lava lamps and Mike's monster drum kit. Then the intro music starts and Derek strides across the stage, starting the keys intro to "Lines in the Sand". Then follows the rest of the band and my night to remember has begun. The set list is as follows: Lines in the Sand Burning My Soul Voices Hollow Years Crack / Puppies ACOS II Innocence Just Let Me Breathe Peruvian Skies Pull Me Under Take Away My Pain Scarred ACOS IV Winters YTSE JAM (Drum Solo-not long enough Mike!!!) New Millennium Encore - Metropolis Pt 1 This was taken from the Set list that I snagged after the show. Thanks to the roadie that handed in to me! Anyone who thinks that Derek's keys on the new album are weak has to see him live. I couldn't believe how many parts that I though where John P.'s turned out to be keyboard parts. The guitar and keyboard parts meshed so well together. John P. made his lead parts look so simple. He would have one foot up on the monitor and just lean back and rip! It was great to see him live! John M. also made his bass parts look effortless. I was only 4 feet from him and gained a new appreciation of how skilled his is. The Stick also was simply impressive! Jamie L. held nothing back and went for every throat-tearing note. Astounding vocal range! But the show for me was Mike P.!!!(I'm biased since I'm a drummer) Anytime that he didn't have to be sitting down, he was up and spinning cymbals, spinning drumsticks, throwing drumsticks(I got a finger on one put couldn't pull it down; next time!) or just pumping up the crowd! Good show Mike!!! The whole group is something to behold live. So tight, so in sync, truly worth the 7 year wait that I had to finally see them!!!
After the show we were rudely rushed out by the rent-a-cops. So I headed for my car, dumped my tour T-shirt that I bought($25.00), and grabbed my snare drum head out of the trunk. First out was Derek escorted by what looked like a 16 year old girl.(I'm sure she was older though) They headed for the bus. He came out latter to sign stuff. Vanessa got her picture with him and he signed my Set list. John M. also made a B-line for the bus and came back out. Got his autograph too. John P. came out next but I didn't get his autograph(I'll get it in Myrtle Beach). Then Jamie L. came out and I got his autograph.(He was alot more down to earth then people made him out to be.) Great guy. Then finally around 12:30 Mike P. came out. I got him to sign my set list and my drum head which he made out personally to me. That will be hanging on my wall above my drums for an eternity!!! As well as the pictures that I got with him!! Oh well, definitely a night that I will not soon forget and worth the wait. Thanks for the great show guys, and hope to see you in Myrtle Beach at the House of Blues!!! BTW, Metropol spelled DT wrong(you know-THEATRE) on their sign out front. My boss here at work is giving me that look like "don't you think that you show do something constructive now?" Silly man, 2 hours of sleep was not enough for me. I think I'll find a nice place to lay done and take a nap. See-ya, and sorry for the long post, Shawn

7/8 is nice... :-) I once heard some nice piece by Pierre Moerlen's Gong in which they shifted from 7/8 to 7/4 or vice versa, I think it's Crosscurrents, or at least on the CD of the same title -- anyone remembering this one?
Actually I used to be affiliated w/a women's music initiative in which most were into sax, followed by keyboards and vocals... but only 2 each playing bass, dr/perc, and guitar... stilistically it was very jazz-oriented...
That's why I feel priviledged to have a female guitar player who also is into heavier stuff, too... though she wants me to move to drums for the reason that drummers are more difficult to find than bass players, and we can't need someone w/just a "getting that darn drum job done" attitude... but then I don't get identity problems over that... the reason I refused to touch any guitar (and sing...) from age 14 to 17 actually was that my stepmother wanted me to play all that boring stuff in church (and still worse, she had no insight whatsoever that I didn't share her religious beliefs...).

Oh, prog-wise I still could recommend Heaven the Hills (though they have a male guitar player)... A excellent (jazz) guitar players also are Susan Weinert and Emily Remler...

Hi Ytsejammers!!! I know Kuba, and know his opinion about FII. Althought I don't agree this opinion, he obviously have a right to his own opinion. Mr Ptacek, what a narrow-minded are you? Can't you use a more polite words to describe Kuba and his letter? I think, you are an idiot, if you can't respect opinions of other people. This is a childish behaviour. How old are you? 15? This is strange, that a few weeks ago I red a discussion on YTSE about rights to opinions, and now I'm reading these f***ing bullshits!!!! I think , the european prog-metal scene is better than in US. We respect rights of others, but you don't. So, I wish you good luck on your way to knowledge about a music. I think, you probably will bring me down in your next letter, but nevermind. I f*** it, and f*** your mail. I don't understand, why some people on YTSE want to make a battles with others. In my opinion it should be a friendly channel for real DT fans. I'm thinking, what other bands you listen to, Mr Ptacek. Can you tell me? You probably have a sunglasses on your eyes, and don't see any aspects of some things.
