I was making two counterarguments in one sentence. Notice the "And for
those who think the album (spekaing of FII) sounds disjointed" -- many
people were saying that FII sounds disjointed in parts (namine Peruvian and
Trial as examples) and syaing that Awake was smoother, which I don't agree
    with at all.

    >Personally, I don't think I've

Awake sounds great production-wise, sure I'll agree with that, but then
    again, I'm not a production-head. And, there weren't 100 keyboard sounds
on Awake. You'd be hard pressed to find 10. Then again, you wouldn't find
much more on I&W or FII either, but I prefer the sounds used on those to
    Awake. GO fig.

James said Kevin showed up, and that he hung out with them. He didn't go
into much detail about the night, instead he kind of got defensive saying
he had no problems with Kev. I'm not sure why he went that route with the
conversation because I never implied that I thought differently. He
reitterated the known, that Kev is in film school and still writing
material. I was trying to get some detail on their evening together, and
    it just didn't happen.

(This is a separate enough issue that I'm making it a separate mail from my
    last one)

Hey, let me add my 2 cents that Drain STH is a very cool band. And they do
have some proggy elements. In several songs they switch from a 4 to a 3
meter from verse to chorus, and one song (Stench) has a verse in 11. So,
they do have some leanings in Our Favorite Direction (OFD?)

Booty-kicking band. Saw them open for Type O. I'm in lust with the
    drummer. ;)

Well one band I haven't seen mentioned, who **ARE** a genuine progressive
rock band and have a female singer
are Strangers On A Train. They are yet another one of keyboardist Clive
Nolan's many bands (other's are Pendragon, Arena and Shadowland) They have
a sound of a mixture of Clive's other bands (of course :) ), they released
two albums that are now long been unavailable due to their record label
going bust. Clive has managed to get the rights to these albums back and
will be re-released next year along with a yet to be recorded third
    Strangers album.
Another one to look out for, though not progressive is The Wishing Tree,
Marillion guitarist's Steve Rothery side project, with Enchant's Paul
Craddick on drums. Vocalist Hannah Stobort (something like that). Lots of
acoustic songs and a few more rockin' ones, make a very enjoyable album.

Indeed. Actually, I think they're both fairly hard, but not impossible,
to find. What IS a bitch to find is the "Rose Colored Glasses" single,
which has a live version of "Someone to Hold Onto" on it. There are a lot
of folks here who'd probably be bored to tears by this stuff, but, if not,
Animal Logic is a hell of a band.

    > Then there are the couple of tracks on "Victor" that are sung by Dalbello.
    > She's got a set of pipes, and a kickass attitude.

And let us not forget that "Gonna Get Close to You" off "Rage for Order"
    is a Dalbello tune.

Since we've expanded the discussion a little, I'm surprised no one's
mentioned Sean Yseult from White Zombie. She really whacks the hell out
of that bass. Or Jo from Boltthrower, now that I'm thinking of it...

If I remember correctly, the prog-metal band Conception did at one
time have a female vocalist.I can't remember her name right off-hand,
but I also believe they released an album or so with her.

On another note, if you're looking a good prog-metal bands with female
musicians, I have a wonderful recommendation: Braindance.

In one sentence, BD are "cinematic-neuromantic new age progressive

They have both a female guitarist and keyboardist, both of whom can
    rip it up immensely.

Their first ablum, _Fear Itself_ is highly recommended.

Thanks for pointing this out. Upon further investigation into this topic,
it turns out that although Live And Alive (vol. 1 & 2) are a copy of
Consciously Unreal (like I claim), there are two extra tracks on vol.2 not
on Consciously Unreal. Apparently, these are the tracks you're commenting
on, namely the guitar solo and OaMoT, which include James on vocals and
are quite possibly from the 1992 US tour.

Skunk Anansi. People should try Skunk Anansi. You *could* buy the album but
you could *also* just buy the Strange Days soundtrack, with their flagship
song on it. It's pretty good - the song and the soundtrack. Not the movie.
:( The trailor for the movie was really cool, though. Like that never
happens. I tell you, it's that same guy doing the voiceover for all those
trailers. It doesn't matter how crappy the movie is, because gravely-voiced
VO man will make it sound really cool! "Joe Schmoe...was an ordinary man...
until one day at the supermarket, his whole life will change...Now, he's on
the run...from the pissed off checkout girl who wants to kill him...and he
has no idea why..." and so on.

    woah. </tangent>

Skunk Anansi is the only non-rap band I know of with a lead, black, female.

And oh yes, that sountrack has a great picture of juliette lewis grinding a
microphone stand in the liner notes. That's worth it right there.

Last weekend, in a 10-cent bargain (read: crap) bin outside of a Delaware
record store, I found what turned out to be a real gem. A 1995 promotional
Elektra sampler CD featuring "Perfect Strangers" by DT on track 1. (Yes, I
paid a dime for a promotional CD -- flame away)

The tracklist of the sampler, cleverly titled "Attack of the 50 ft Ear
    Infection", is as follows:
    1. Dream Theater -- Perfect Strangers
    2. Anthrax -- Fueled
    3. Down -- Stone The Crow
    4. For Love Not Lisa -- Coming Into Focus
    5. Kyuss -- Gloria Lewis
    6. Redbelly -- Can't Get It Back

Is this item worth anything? Not that I have any intention of selling it
(although maybe a trade-offer for a Lie single would change my mind...),
I'm just wondering if it's at all rare, if I 'discovered' something here,
or if everyone and their brother somehow 'connected' has got it and it
really *is* worth only the dime. After all, think about little Timmy and
that operation he's longing for... Eh, maybe not. Thanks.

This has probably been mentioned in the past, but am I the only one who has thought about
letting the various CD clubs know about progressive music? Would anybody be interested in
organizing an Email bombing of Columbia House to convince them to carry more prog bands and
labels? I think this could actually do some good with a large club like Columbia House, but I
haven't a clue how to organize it. Since, this type thing has been done before, maybe someone
in the know would volunteer to organize it. Anyone?? We could each send a letter telling
Columbia House about how many CD's we'd buy if they'd carry our favorite prog bands. We could
list those bands and the labels they're on. Who's with me?

Just so you know, one of the Jam's own, Mike Bahr, sells a CD replica of a
Queensryche boot with the MTV Unplugged show on it. It's called "Silent
Lucidity". Of course, it's only the 5 tracks MTV aired (I Will Remember, The
Killing Words, Della Brown, Silent Lucidity, and The Lady Work Black). QR
also played Scarborough Fair, Anybody Listening, and Rockin' In the Free
World, but MTV never played those tracks! (Those bastards!) Anyway, in case
    you didn't know, Mike's URL is http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/home.html. I
think he wants something like $20 for a copy.

Yeah, I have that one. I haven't heard them in years! (Maybe I'll dig the
CD out for a little trip down memory lane...) I ran out and bought that CD
after I heard "Nice Dreams" on the radio. What a fookin' amazing tune!!!

I don't think my last mail about hearing the radio edit of You Not Me last
night ever went through, so we'll see about this one. I was just reading
what is quite possibly the last bastion of quality journalism in the free
world, The Onion, and came across a reference to OFB.

Will someone please send me the URL's of the webpages with Dream Theater
guitar tab? Yahoo fucking sucks, and there are a ton of pages down and out.
Send mail privately if you please.

Thanks to ALL in advance. Hey, I'd tell you if I knew!!!

    >wow.. . female guitarists are rare, but even rarer is the female guitarist
    >who plays Prog and not Indigo Girls! hehe... no offense to the Indigo
    >Girls

Hehe...I also like Meredith Brooks, so what can I say. However, I prefer
    heavier stuff.
I shocked the hell out of some fellow college-mates who wanted to hear me
play guitar last weekend...they were totally impressed. (Only because I
was rare, IMO...I suck...that WAS NOT a personal plug. Anyone who knows me
can verify I have no self esteem)

    >Also in Erotomania, notice how the main theme isn't 5/4 all
    >the way through. . it's 9/8 on the fourth measure. .. very subtle
    >indeed! I love 7/8, but my heart lies with 5, I think. I tend to write
    >in 5 a lot. . .

Yep...because of their handy jazz backgrounds, the DT members do a lot of
funky, subtle time shifts. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! MUAHAHAHA! =D

    Re: Drain sth
    >I went looking for their album
    >the other day, but it was out so I got some other stuff

Yeah, they don't have a HUGE pressing number, so the CD's are usually in
or sold out! :) I got the disc a LOOOONG time ago, and originally I heard
them from someone from Sweden. They kick SOOOO much ass live. I talked to
the guitarist, actually. She was really kewl.

    > If you're looking for some kick ass all female music... you just
    >gotta get The Bangles! I'm sorry if it makes me look like a pud, but I
    >don't care! I LOVE IT!! Brings those 80s days back in full (and very
    >painful) force.

Hehe, I'd rather not remember those days ;) I was a little tool kiddie.
I tend to listen to more modern stuff, but I have nothing against the
    Bangles, so don't start testosterone-flaming me ;)

    >> with JUST female singers. (gotta look for people to idolize other than
    >> John Petrucci ;)
    >you don't really need anybody else. I'm a guy, and if this guy asked me
    >to . . .well, we won't get into that. But suffice to say, he's my hero,
    >and I would do _anything_ for him. . <wink, wink> <nudge, nudge> <sob>

HAHAHAHA!!!! All I can say is, I have YET to meet him, but I really
think I would die to talk to him for a little while. I also play the oboe,
and I have to talk to him about relaxation/performing...someday.....

    >That's just the way it is.

Well, I can't empathize. Most of the people in general I play DT for
don't REALLY like it...most of them are guys. Anyone who plays an
instrument is impressed at their level of technical ability, but most
people can't get into them, regardless of gender. Which brings me to my
other point...let me guess, MOST of the people you play DT for are guys
ANYWAY, eh? Statistically speaking, it's an invalid comparison if you play
DT for more guys than chicks anyway ;) <=- too much statistical measures
    classes for this psych major

    >which they shifted from 7/8 to 7/4 or vice versa, I think it's

7/8 is fun...even Alice In Chains used it on at least ONE entire song
(with the obvious exception of the chorus).... (for those of you who
    forget, it was "Them Bones.")

    >Actually I used to be affiliated w/a women's music initiative in which most

Awesome! I'm not too much into new-wave jazz as I am more blues-heavy,
grinding-ass-heavy-shredding music ;) I have too much anger to let off, I
guess.... :p It comes from being trapped in this shitty school with all
    these neo-hippies, I think....

    >That's why I feel priviledged to have a female guitar player who also is

    >but then I don't get identity problems over that... the reason I refused to
    >touch any guitar (and sing...) from age 14 to 17 actually was that my
    >stepmother wanted me to play all that boring stuff in church (and still
    >worse, she had no insight whatsoever that I didn't share her religious
    >beliefs...).

Hahahaha...religion?! What's that crap? (no offense meant, just
emphasizing that I don't believe in it personally) I had to sing for a
friend's band once...way too boring. Plus I had to stand there and have
everyone stare at me, which, IMO, without a guitar in front of me, is bad
    news. (paranoia! ;) kidding)

    >You don't mean Phantom Blue -?

Yeah, everyone else seems to remember their name but me hehehe. :) I
can't find any of their discs....

Well, I should be going...I saw the LA Guitar Quartet in performance this
evening--they were so awesome! Amazing stuff. They played an INTERESTING
(hahaha) version of Pachelbel's canon called "Pachelbel's Loose Cannon"
which was HILLARIOUS for their encore. The Manuel de Falla piece was
    exceptionally kickass!!!!

            Nite!
