    > Hey everyone,

I was at the D.C. show on Sunday night when Big Wreck was given a less than hospitable welcome. Okay,
so they aren't bad musicians and the lead singer definitly has talent, in both vocals and guitar. But
I totally agree with a lot of you who say they are a Soundgarden, STP, etc. ripoff. Plus the singer,
to me, was a bit cocky to be opening for Dream Theater, eventhough he did say how dedicated DT fans
were and that DT were a very talented group. Yeah you think!..tell me something I don't know, buddy.
Why did he think we there risking our lives in the pit of hell called D.C., because DT sucks, no way!
Also, they shouldn't have jammed out evey tune ( most of them ran a scary 9 minutes) and who does the
lead singer think he is soloing when Demi-God Petrucci was going to be on in 30 minutes? Give me a
break and let your ego deflate a little. Could the crowd could have been nicer, yes, but I don't blame
anyone for not enjoying them perform. Big Wreck should consider that they are playing in front of the
most complex, die-hard, intelligent, and musically inclined group of fans in the world ( Yes, we DT
fans rule!) and should expect a bit of criticism from us. Hey if you don't like who your playing for,
go open up for Hanson or something. Never blame a DT fan for being critical, we have a right to be.

Thanks for reading my diary on the news stand,

    from coldfire:
    >Okay here's my DT goosebumps:
    >ALL of Hells Kitchen! That song takes me through the full range of
    >emotions! It has to be both the happiest and saddest song I have ever

i am in total agreement. simply perfect. i never heard it as a part of
bms, but, though that's a solid song and all, i'm glad it stands alone.

    from brian:
    >National Anthem of the United States of America.
    > [snip]
    >O'a' de land uh de free and da damn plantation uh de brave

wow. up until that last line, i thought that it was just in mildly poor
taste. i'm not one to pander to political correctness, but that last
line just proved to me that it was in really poor taste. why is this on
the jam, i have no idea... but i'm kinda offended, and i'm white. you
owe all the black jammers an apology, or some sort of explanation. i
suppose it was an attempt at humor (at least i'd like to think it was),
but if so, well, it didn't translate well. use some discretion when you
    post.

    from neil:
    >play". Well, nearly. It was, in fact, 21 years ago today that the Sex
    >Pistols released that great single "Anarchy In The UK". Nostalgia
    >night, tonight - the video of "The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle" pogo

ok, this makes me curious. the sex pistols personally make me want to
vomit, and there are few things in the world i would rather hear less,
and i always figured that any right-minded dt fan would feel the same.
i guess, though, that i was way off base on that assumption. go
figure--you learn something new every day. are there sex pistols fans
on the list? (i don't know why i'm so surprised about this, except that
i guess i just never expected it.) if so, what is the appeal? i miss
it entirely, and who knows, maybe i'm missing something good. i mean, i
doubt it, but what the heck, it's worth the question....

    incredulously,

heh heh! As good a way as any to write it! :)
I must say, though, I wholeheartedly agree with this. Peruvian Skies is
rapidly becoming one of my all-time favs.
While we're on the subject, all of Mike's double-bass playing just gets me
every time. Some of my fave DT moments are structured around Mike's
    double-bass playing. For example:

    Peruvian Skies (obviously!)
The end of ACOS (Seize the day and don't you cry...)
    The end of Innocence Faded
The end of Only A Matter Of Time
The end of Scarred (don't you just hate the way it fades out! I wish that
track went on a LOT longer!)

Other fave DT moments (while I'm on the subject):

The end of the TTT Demo (where KJLB goes Ooh ooh oooooohhhh, oo oo yeah
etc., with the piano bit, and then these lovely, warm keyboard chords come
in underneath, which they criminally left off the studio version)
The live version of Surrounded (LATM vers., all of it, but especially the
    end)
    The live Mission Impossible----->Afterlife (w / KJLB)
Voices (all of it, but especially the first verse, and the guitar (I think)
bit that goes speaker to speaker during 'The Spider in the window...' bit,
and when the first chorus explodes in)
    The rest of Scarred
    The mad jam during JLMB
The 'Still awake...'/'Wecome to the wasteland' bit of TOT
The slide guitar solo in Anna Lee
Moon Bubbles (I think it's called that) on the Live In Tokyo video
    Eve

I could go on... and on...

Still looking forward to the 9th...

    Andy.

Why are you already predicting the demise of VH? There hasn't been
any music released yet and you say it is going to suck. Why? It
sounds more wishful thinking than anything else. Extreme is dead, sad
but true. VH won't die as long as Ed continues playing. From all
reports, he is as excited as ever about making music. I don't think
    your "prediction" will come true.

I saw DT open with learning to live at the paladium(RI) a few years back. I
also saw them open with metropolis and pull me under. I thought learning to
live was a little long to open with. They rocked on it anyway. I didnt like
when they had the intro of PMU recorded and then came in when the double
bass kicks in. The recorded intro to metropolis worked okay since there
isnt much going on there. Lines in the sand is a great opener but whos to
    say...
I am also interested in the Boston jam list. I havent read all the current
digests yet so if the info is there cool, if not I hope to see it soon

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Since Thanksgiving is just round the corner, I wanted to toss out some
thoughts about what I'm thankful for...

I'm thankful that I've got my hearing and that it's still so keen. Music
is pure life to me, and being without music would be hell on earth.

I'm glad that there's so many different kinds of music. Even if you don't
like a particular kind, there's always something else out there that you
do like. In particular, I'm glad that there's so many excellent prog bands
    out there.

I'm thankful for the Ytsejam, and the cool Ytsepersonalities who hang out
here; also for their recommendations which have led me to discover lots
    of cool new bands.

I'm grateful for Skadz, who's provided us with this list and lets us post
about damn near anything that we please, but keeps things from getting
totally out of hand at times. Bravo Skadz.

And, of course, I'm glad that five guys formed a band called Dream Theater
and saw fit to grace us with their music. Labrie, Portnoy, Sherinian,
Petrucci and Myung are five of the finest musicians around, and Dream
Theater's music is outstanding. Thanks for doing what you do, guys.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. Don't destroy *too* much bird, and spare a
thought for those less fortunate who have not heard of Dream Theater. :)

    Cheers,
    Phil

Wrong. During the time that you state above (12:05 through 12:30 in ToT) there is not
a bass "Solo." A solo is when the musician is the only one playing or his instrument
is the unquestionable focus of the moment. Well, the bass is definitely not playing
alone and while it does come up in the mix a little, I don't think it does enough take
all your attention off the other instruments. All that is IMO, of course, and isn't
really the point anyway. The point is that FII DOES NOT end with a bass solo (as the
review in question said). ToT ends at 13:07, which is 37 seconds AFTER the 12:30
mark. From 12:30 to the end of FII there is a slow fade out with all the instruments
playing softly with the guitar, bass and Mike's cymbal riding getting equal billing to
    my ear.

If Metallica can show up on the Jam due to being one of DTs influences, so
can Yes... dtrc (DT related content). :)

KEYS TO ASCENSION 2 is *really* good stuff. I was really disappointed with
the new studio material from Keys 1 (although, the live material was great),
but the studion material on Keys 2 is 70s-quality Yes material. In
particular, Mind Drive the first track on the album, which is 18+ minutes,
is great. Like a classic Yes piece, it has some slow, acoustical parts
which are very moving (reminiscent of Turn of the Century), as well as some
fast-paced instrumental parts (like CttE)--in fact the song ends with an
incredible 3min+ instrumental section. Unlike most long Yes songs, Mind
Drive is not divided into movements. The subsequent three tracks on the
album don't quite measure up to Mind Drive, but they're still really
good--two of them open with Yes vocal harmonies (like ...Good People) and
two of them end with instrumental sections (like Mind Drive does, but not as
fast). The last piece is a brief instrumental which is slow but really
moves me. The song lengths are 18, 9, 7, 6, and 4 minutes. Great
song-writing all around. And, of course, the live stuff is great as well.

OPEN YOUR EYES, which is classic Yes minus Wakeman, plus Billy Sherwood and
Igor whats-his-name, is great too. On the first listen I thought it was
okay; on the second listen I really liked it. I don't like it as much as
KTA2 at present, but I probably won't have a definite opinion about it for
awhile. The song lengths run between 4 and 6 minutes, for the most part,
except the last track which has a 15minute piece starting at about 7:52 (a
couple minutes after the last song on the album ends). Don't get too
excited; the entire piece consists of birds tweeting in the background (much
like the intro to CttE) with a 3second vocal harmony interlude about every
minute or so. Really weird. Good song-writing overall; kind of like a
later Rush album: the pieces are shorter, but really well-written.

I recommend both albums, and I will probably submit KTA2 as one of my albums
of the year (I'll need to listen to it several more times first, though).

DTC: I haven't had a chance to write since seeing the Tradewinds show last
Friday. Great show, as everyone has said, although I was pretty
disappointed that they didn't play Scarred. However, I've never seen UaGM
played live before, so that made up for it. I must add that I also liked
the new slightly-extended electric version of The Silent Man. Hope to get a
boot of it sometime. Anyway, I'm writing primarily because I've yet to see
anyone post (possibly because I overlooked it) about the pre-show b sides.
Let me just say that "Raise the Knife" kicks ass! Oh, if only they had
included it instead of YNM and AL or the like. Where We Used To Be was
incredible as well. The others were pretty good, but I couldn't figure out
which one was Cover My Eyes and which was Speak to Me. Oh well. I'm really
looking forward to having those songs in my possession.

Okay, I've written my quota for the month.

    ~Topher

PS Happy Thanksgiving all...and *watch* football while *listening* to DT.

BTW I realise that I just wrote a fairly large amount of ndtc, but I'd like
to believe that it was relevant to the topic of this mailing list. However,
the recent post entitled "Good Morning" with a blithering idiot's version of
the National Anthem is simply not funny, tasteful, or in any relevant to the
jam (and if it is, somehow, the writer should mention that somewhere in the
post). I mean no offense to Brian Hayden; I just didn't think that the post
    was at all necessary.

Yes, you're completely right! I didn't say that Steve Gadd is the BEST, I
said he's ONE OF THE BESTS. I like Buddy Rich too, but I didn't mention him
because, for me, it's obvious that he is on of the bests (if not the best)
jazz drummers of all times, and every people who likes drumming must agree
    with it.

There are so many lines in the song that can be interpreted to fit either
version. "The monster you created in your daddy's name" could be symbolic
of Vanessa's feelings about the lie. Will we ever know the truth?

And if it was released by some other band it wouldn't have grown on you?

If DT would release a mediocre (technically speaking, i.e., sloppy playing,
etc) rap album (assuming that you dislike rap), would it grow on you because
it is DT? That is not right...

A friend of mine just got off the phone with Jaxx and it turns out
that the DT show scheduled for December 26th at Jaxx in Virgina has
been canceled. :( The owner said that DT is having trouble with
their managment but they WILL be coming to Jaxx at a later date. No
    idea when.
