"Who the fuck are you?" - hey that was me but as I said, I'm a lurker,
therefore I keep a low profile. I asked if Merlo was there and Pat said you
two has seen him but not others. I had 2 other dudes with me who did not want
    to stay
afterward so I did not have time to find other jammers. I guess I wasn't in a
    talkative
mood given that Big Wreck was playing and I was having to shout to ask
questions (and a bit tired after driving up from Raleigh).

But .. I WAS wearing my Ytsejam t-shirt! I guess no one saw me - they were all
    "in the front rooooooow."

And I missed Phil Kaplan's pre-show jam (though I had asked him about it
    earlier in
    the week).

Here's the set list I think I heard (looks the same as Denver's setlist)

Order close but probably not exact ...

    LiTS
    BMS
    Voices
    HY
Crack in The Mirror/Puppies on Acid/ACOS II Innocence
    JLMB
    PS/PMU
    TAMP
    Scarred
    ACOS IV Winters/Ytsejam/Drum solo
    NM

    Encore: Metropolis I (extended jam)

Perhaps I'll meet more of you in DC if DT does not make it to NC on the next
    leg.
Everyone already thinks I'm crazy for going that far "for a concert!" They
    just don't
    get it!

Whoops. That wasn't supposed to go to the 'Jam at all. It was just supposed to
go to a few friends, I accidentally got the ytsejam address in there. Sorry if
    anyone got offended.

Yep the 26th date is not longer. Rumor has that DT will play multiple
    dates there in January.

I also thought it was distasteful and crazy for Big Wreck to solo
    during their set.

Well, since I got all of this started (the first meaningful thread in
a while!), I might as well confess...

I had fully intended to ask JP about Vanessa, who she is/was etc., when
I met the band at the HMV "unplugged" session here in Toronto. Well, I
was totally excited about meeting one of my guitar heroes, not to mention
I spent too much time talking to James, that I totally forgot. I bet
that would have cleared things up before they got muddy...

But hey...let the debate continue...this is good shit!

Speaking of drummers, I just noticed Dave Weckl (http://www.daveweckl.com/tour.htm) is beginning to tour again. On the implied suggestion from a fellow jammer (Adam Barndhart) who simply called Dave "sacry", I shall be going to check this bad boy out at Berklee on 12/17.

all i'm saying is that knwoing past VH fans, they aren't gonna be too happy with yet *another* singer... plus, gary always has side projects that may take his focus off VH... just my thoughts.

and as far as "VH won't die as long as Ed continues playing," well, Eddie said it himself that if Gary doesn't work as a new singer, he'd hang up VH. that's not me talking...

well, i don't think all of it will come true. i do think that Extreme will do more stuff together, though. i wish Gary and VH a good career, too. but something tells me it's not totally over in the Extreme camp.

    NOTE: Reply to DreamNDay@dreamt.org

Holy shit!! I'm still recovering from the show last night. It was like a dream come true, thanks to Mike! Here's a rundown

Big Wreck: The singer bears a striking resemblence to Chris Cornell. The way he looks and moves, it was kinda creepy. they had some talent, but I would never listen to them.

Before DT came on, I saw a jam shirt in the audience. I shook the guy's hand and we introduced ourselves.

Now, for DT!!! Derek came out first and tried to get the crowd pumped. He was wearing a purple velvet shirt and swayed his hips when he walked, which confirms how I feel about him a little more (Don't ask if you don't know what I'm talking about. Don't wanna get that started again ;) They went right into Lines In The Sand. John and Mike sand James' part on the chorus while James sang Doug's. Next was Burning My Soul, which had the crowd jumping, followed by Voices. At the end of Voices, Mike noticed that I was pumping my fist along with his cymbal crashes and I guess he noticed I knew all the words and the time sig's and everything, so he gave a look in my direction smiled, and nodded. I screamed MIIIIIIIIIIKKEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and he laughed. After that the order of the set is a blur, but I do remember them playing The Crimson Sunrise, Innocence, The Darkest Of Winters, Peruvian Skies, Hollow Years (which sounded great, surprisingly, on an electric guitar), New Millenium, Just Let Me Breathe, Scarred, Under A Glass Moon, Pull Me Under, The Ytse Jam, with a new middle section, and of course, Metropolis, played with it's new middle section. They threw little teasers in, like the beginning of 6:00, Puppies on Acid, which I was hoping was going to be The Mirror, and the double bass part of Metallica's One. Mike played THREE drum solos, one during Ytsejam, one during JLMB, and another one that I can't remember. Mike kept looking and pointing at me, which was my highlight of the night. Every time he pointed, I screamed, which got him laughing. One time he threw his drumstick to me, but the assholes behind me started a big fight, so I never got my hands on it. All in all, the show was incredible. John P always seems out of it when I see him. I was at his feet all night, so he was looking me right in the eye at times. He has this cold blank stare (to quote ACOS) that pierces right through you. It gave me the creeps. But he was in top form. James sounded great, I'm glad he doesn't scream like he used to. I never noticed how he sticks his tounge out when he hits high notes! LOL! John M played the Chaplain Stick on NM. That thing amazed me! I've never seen a 12 string bass before!

Well, after the show, I went outside to the bus. Derek was standing there. We got our stuff signed, and I asked him if they were coming back next tour. He said "Yeah, we love it here. We played here last year, didn't we?" My friend said "Don't you know where you play"? He replied "Well we do a lot of shows". Hmm...HOW many shows did they play last year? A whole 5? Oh well, he was a nice guy. Next for us to meet was John Myung. I was just talking to people asking about endorsements. I knew Mike had one from Tama, and Petrucci is endorsed by Ibanez and Mesa/Boogie, but I didn't know about John M, so I asked him. He said that he's just finsihed working on a signature 6 string bass with Yamaha that's coming out soon. James was next. I asked him about this years Christmas CD. He said, "Well, I don't know what we're gonna do. It's gonna be cool". I asked about the unreleased stuff we heard before the show, and he said it's probably gonna be on the Metropolis Part 2 EP coming out around the fall of 98. I asked him about his vocal melodies, and he said he writes most of them, and that he wrote lyrics on 2 of the unreleased songs. Somone told him they liked "Anna Lee". He said "Thanks. Does anyone know what that song's aboot?" (Noticed the Canadian accent on the word about) No one said a word. I said. "It sounds like a story about a young girl who's molested and abused". James said "Yeah, it's about incest. Good job, man!" :) Mike was next, which had me pumped. I asked him if it was me he was looking and pointing at all night and he said I was, and that he tried throwing the stick to me. I told him I couldn't get it, and he said he'd give me a new one but all his shit was already gone with the truck. I had a nice conversation with him. I told him that my three idols were him, John P, and Mike Patton (knew that would get a response) and we got to talking about Mr. Bungle. I told him that Mike blew off his fans at Roseland in September and that not all musicians were as nice as Dream Theater. Then I told him that I had a bootleg video from the Manhattan Center in 94 and it looked like he had a Pro-Pain tank top on. He said "WOW!! You're very observant!" We got to talking about Pro-Pain. Before he got on the bus, he thanked me for coming and told me it was real nice meeting me. John P was the last one to come out, which makes this my third time meeting him. He was wearing a Big Wreck hat. Someone asked him what the design on it was and he said "I dunno, but it looks cool!" We waited maybe an hour and a half to 2 hours to meet everyone, but it was worth it. They were so cool, but security guards at the chance are dickheads. They prevented us from meeting the band last year, but this year it looked like the band had the say. Well, I've gone on long enough. Now to your regularly scheduled jam.

    >You say this like this is a good thing. Most Metallica fans from the >first four albums DON'T like TBA. A return to the feel of that album >is still a disappointment. Sorry.

I would tend to agree that TBA was a "let-down" from earlier Metallica. The funny thing is, a lot people I know were introduced to Metallica by TBA. They went on to get into AJFA, MOP, and RTL. But they still love TBA, maybe because it was their first.

I was a big Led Zeppelin fan, but all of their albums but In Through The Out Door had been released by the time I started to get into music. I bought all of the Zep stuff totally out of order, but liked them all, even though they had changed a lot from release to release. Then I hear people (in their 40's), who say that Zep went downhill after LZ II was released?!

I followed Queensryche from the beginning, and loved everything up until Empire. I felt that Empire was the falling point. Other people started with O:M, but couldn't get into The Warning, even though I think it's a classic.

It seems like it's all timing. If you like the first release "you hear" from a band, you tend to like everything else that is "as good" or "better". (That's subjective, of course)

So it might be possible to take someone untouched by Metallica, and start them with Load. Next take them to TBA, and then to AJFA. They may love them all, but still have a warm spot for Load, since it was their first, and it was "fresh" to them. Would that be twisted or what?

So once again, it may all be in the timing. Fans who are with a band from the start tend to be disappointed when they get to a release that is perceived to be a "drop" in quality from the previous release. Other people may get into a band later, go totally out of order, and miss that "drop" that is felt by people who are "living" the time line.

Don't know what to call this effect, but it seems to explain a lot of the differing perceptions that people have about these bands and their releases.

Can you imagine this as an ancient review?: "Beethoven's 5th Symphony is a disappointment, it's commercial, and it's a sellout. Personally, I will only listen to the first 4. IF there's a 6th, I only hope he can regain the energy he has obviously lost." ;-)

Sorry about the long, non-DT post. Sometimes I can't help but ponder this weird stuff...

    hasta, BH

    >No! Hey, christmas gifts should be surprises, shouldn't they?

    >Steffen - THE MIRROR

The 96 CD yes I can. If you mean the 97 CD, besdies the band no one seems to know and as Steffan said some of us like to be surprised. If I remember from last year, the fanzine/CD arrived in mid December, surely you can wait a few more weeks ?

Yes, you're completely right! I didn't say that Steve Gadd is the BEST, I said he's ONE OF THE BESTS. I like Buddy Rich too, but I didn't mention him because, for me, it's obvious that he is on of the bests (if not the best) jazz drummers of all times, and every people who likes drumming must agree with it.

Yup, you couldn't have said it better. I wasn't scrutinizing you when you said that Steve Gadd is one of the bests, I was pointing out who was better :) Anyways, I personally believe that Buddy could outdrum most drummers today with one hand. My drum teacher used to be very quick to point that out. I have a video at home that has Buddy playing his heart out in his final performance. The one that he had a heart attack in when he was playing (he still finished the show) talk about perserverance. Later, J
