Jammers,
The New issue of _Guitar Player_ with Kenny Wayne Shepherd on the cover has
a short article detailing Petrucci's setup for recording FII. Check it out
if interested in that sorta gearhead stuff :)

Hmm, the first time I heard the keys solo at the beginning of TTT
(also happened to be the first time I heard DT :), I got some pretty
major goosebumps. Also Wait for Sleep, especially the piano at the
beginning, and that part at the beginning of ACOS (official release)
when the heavy, crunchy guitars come in.
Non DT goose bump stuff, anything by Saviour Machine.

Well, it is the day after and another successful concert was had. Let
me tell you about it.
My day started at 3 when I arrived at Phil Kaplan's house to meet with
a few other jammers for some pre-show festivities. Because most of
the people were musicians, (with me being the exception) they held a
jam session. Chris Merlo was there. (Didn't recognise him without
the hat.) Along with a guy and his girlfriend (He play guitar, she
plays bass. Kewl!) and another guy from Philly. (I'm sorry, but I
am horrible with names.) They played all sorts of stuff. I couldn't
ask for a better warmup. We had originally planned on going to the
Cheesecake Factory for dinner, but we were running short on time
(mainly because no one knew the best way to get to the Ballroom from
Chevy Chase) so we stopped at a Roy Rogers.
We arrived at the Ballroom about twenty minutes before the doors
opened. We spent most of that time freezing our asses off and yelling
"Bafu!!" at the top of our lungs. Yes, we were looking for Bafu Vai,
who was supposed to be at the show.
We finally get in and I find out that Chris has backstage passes
waiting for him. (I didn't get one. :^( ) The funny thing was, they
buchered his name badly. (Clint Merlot :^) We get in and I take a
brief look at the T-Shirts before passing. They again suck. Chris
passes the backstage passes to the couple and the guy from Philly.
The last two were reserved for Bafu and another jammer he was supposed
to meet here. We then muscle our way to the front for a good view.
We continue the Bafu call, with no success. Before Big Wreck came on,
there was some instrumental music that was very DTish but wasn't.
Someone there speculated that it might be Liquid Tension. (More on
that later...)
Big Wreck came on. I kinda felt sorry for them, because they weren't
bad. It is just that they weren't appropriate for opening a DT show.
After the first song, we made a lot of cheering noises, which got the
band's attention. The lead made a comment on how dedicated we are and
that we must have camped out at that spot for three days.
(apperently, Mr. Philly has been doing this at all the shows he has
been to.) The lead a couple of times told us that we need to make
more noise. (A sure way for that not to happen.) Apperently toward
the end, someone up front insulted the band in some way and they were
starting to get on him a little bit. That's when Merlo yelled out
"Big Wreck!" and got the band back into a slightly friendlier mood.
Bafu finally found us during the break. Chris was suprised. The
demos played (I liked Raise The Knife.) and The Rooser played. ("Here
they come to kill the Bafu!!" :^) And Derek came on and started the
festivities. Man, he's got that Keith Emerson Keyboard God posing
down! If he just didn't look like a fag doing it sometimes. Myung
has improved his stage presence since the last time I saw him 3 years
ago. He actually stayed in front of the stage for most of the
concert. I also saw him crack a smile once after jamming with John P.
John P., on the other hand, look stiff as a board. I got the feeling
that he might not be feeling well. Portnoy and LaBrie were pretty
much themselves. Mike kept trying to work the crowd into a frenzy.
I'm not going to list the set, because I don't remember. It was
pretty standard. The only unusual parts were Derek losing power to
his keyboards during Scarred, (It didn't matter, his part was done
and they fixed it without any hassle.) and a little jam session
between Derek and Mike after Ytsejam which mike called "The McGee".
Generally, they were buying time for Myung to get his Chapman Stick
ready. Mike introduced New Millenium as "Magoo the McGee". Goofy.
Part 2 comes next with the aftershow...

This is a pretty acurate statement. The only drummers that I have seen
that can compare are Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, and William Kennedy. This
is not a knock to any other drummers, I just haven't seen all my favorites
yet (ie.. Bozzio, etc.)

I have only seen videos of him with Allan and I just love his style,

I've heard that the CD will contain studio outtakes of the FII sessions.
This means different versions/bloopers of various FII outakes.

The good stuff:
The song selection worked really well - loved all the new jam pieces,
including the tease of playing the intro of ToT and then going into
"Scarred". I think "Voices" second and BMS third would have worked
better, but that's just me. TAMP is _tremendously_ better live - I
really dislike it on FII, but I enjoyed it last night. JLMB also came
across much better in a live setting - again, not one of my favs on the
CD, but very impressive live. (Could this be because I don't like the
production on FII? Nah... :) NM sounded weird and wonderful live, with
the Stick playing coming across well - it's still really odd to watch
someone play one of those. The sense of humor came across well,
especially during MP's solo and the "McGee" blues jam. Derek continues
to be, well, odd, but he sounded great. Myung was ON - he was smokin'.
The bad stuff:
The sound. The Cap Ballroom pretty much sounds like crap anyway, but I
think the soundman was asleep for most of the set - the mix was beyond
awful for most of LiTS, and went screwy again at several spots during
the set. Somehow, I don't think the band was too pleased either - they
seemed to be having problems with the monitor mix. They came out kinda
flat - the set didn't really get going until about "Scarred". JP's tech
was nowhere to be seen when he broke a string during a solo - I'm
zeroing on which song that was - and he had to go back behind the amps
to get another guitar. Derek's keys were absent from the mix at times,
and he lost power to his side of the stage for about a minute - during
"Scarred", if I remember correctly - and could do nothing but sit there
looking pissed. I think it may be time for the band to review the roadie
situation - they don't seem to be doing to good of job. The band
themselves were excellent, with the exception of Labrie butchering
"Metropolis" - I don't know if he was having voice problems, or what,
but he did not execute the song well at all. The lights were
distinguished by their blandness, as well.
Conclusions:
OFB is still as good as ever, I just think this was kind of a flat show.
Their supporting crew, however, did an awful job. I'm still looking
forward to seeing them at Jaxx. I know they'll play there, it's just a
question of when, and the sound there is excellent.

We left to the sound of the "Lounge" UAGM. We were dancing to it a
little bit before we were asked to leave. I went quickly to my car
and put on my coat and grabbed my camera and my ACOS CD. and went to
the back. I was disappointed that there was a big fence separating us
from the tour bus. One of the security guards was holding a set of
Portnoy's drum sticks. He was instantly besieged by fans wanting
them. He asked how much are you willing to pay for them. Smart man.
Derek was the first to make an appearance. He, of course, was with a
beautiful woman, which he escorted to the bus. about 5-10 minutes
later, they leave the bus and go back into the building. That was
quick. :^)
Myung was the first to make an appearance. He quietly made his way to
the fence and signed stuff as we stuck it through the fence. He
didn't say much at all, if anything. He went into the bus afterwards.
Next out was James. For him, they were letting people through the
fence 5 people at a time. He looked like death warmed over. He took
care of everyone, though. He even went outside the fence to sign
everyone's stuff. I even got my picture taken with him. What a great
guy.
Derek was the next one. We all asked him about the babe. He said
that she was his accountant. (Yeah, right! :^) Guys were making all
sorts of jokes and Derek was cracking up bad. As he was leaving, he
was talking to us about how nice it is being the only single man in
the band. He was cracking up all the way back to the bus.
After a long wait, Portnoy comes out. He's carrying a bunch of his
gear with him. The crowd tries to get his attention, but he says that
he has to stow his gear first. A girl inside the fence tells us to
get his attention, we should yell "We Magoo'd the McGee" in unison.
As he comes back we do this and he tells us to stop. He was very
friendly and very talkative. We asked him about "McGee". Apperently,
McGee is his drum tech and the crew made up this song for him. It was
something that was stuck in Mike's brain. Someone asked about Spock's
Beard and he said that he would ver much like to tour with them and is
trying to arrainge that for the next leg. (Cool!) Someone else asked
him about Liquid Tension and he confirmed that that was played before
the show and it should be released sometime in Feb. Someone gave him
a bootleg to sign and he realized that he didn't have it. Everyone
was trying to get him to come out from behind the fence. He said that
he didn't think he was supposed to. We told him that James had come
out, which seemed to suprise him. He let me and a couple other guys
in to take pictures.
As we were signing Mike's stuff, John P. quickly went into the bus.
He didn't come out, which has me suspecting that he wasn't feeling
well. I ended up with four sigs and two pictures with band members.
It was a good night. :^)

Two words:
Myung smiled.
In fact, at one point he turned his bass vertical and played a few notes
that way. I thought he might do a spin, but hey, I'll take what I can
get.
In fact, ALL the guys looked like they were having a good time, which is
more than I can say for that OTHER kyboard player.
I think LitS not the best opener. I can't say bad, because nothing about
that song is bad. It's just not fair of them to kick our asses that much
that close to the beginning of the show. After LitS, the rest of the show
was almost anti-climactic.
The highlight:
during ACoS, at the 5/4 par tthat follows the former "please don't go"
part, JP walked to the front of the stage, planted his feet wide apart,
and stared dead-ahead while he played it, as if to say, "I am here to play
this part and your asses are here to be kicked by it." Chills, man.

Uh no. ;-)
I meant the LAST 2 tracks on the CD. They are labeled:
19: Indulge in Reverie
20: A Late Summer's Rain/Schizophrenia
They may be an addition of mr. Whitaker to the CD but I don't think so.
Can someone please tell me what those tracks are? thanx.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I think I just found out a very big bug in WinAmp (it may be the windows
itself, who knows when we're talking about M*******t? ;-)
Anyhow: once WinAmp (I have version 1.55 - the one that Ryan gives with
the CD, but it also happens on 1.00) reserves memory for an MP3, it
doesn't free it, so after listening to about 10 MP3s, my windows goes
insane - font problems, graphics problems etc. or crashes.
Has anyone else ever ran into this bug? Do you know if it's the WinAmp
or the Windoze? thanx again.
----------------------------------------------
Oh what the heck, I'll join the new thread too:
DT-moments that give me chills:
- Space Dye-Vest: the whole song.
- TAMP: the last two lines before the guitar solo, and the solo itself.
- Learning to Live: Pretty much the whole song. Very strong points: the
WHOHOHOO - WHOHOOHO - WHOOOHOOOHOOOOAAAAA section; The second time the
"chorus" appears (you know, after the WFS part...) this is the climax
of the song IMO.
- WFS live when connected with surrounded. The very end, when Kev's
supposed to end with a chord and instead he starts surrounded.
- Scarred: The key and guitar solos. It's like Kev's solo is completed
by John's one.
- LSoaD: "And she listens OOOOOOPENNNNNNLLLLLLLLYYYY" before the unison
(or was it the last chorus? I don't remmeber.).
- ACOS: Another World: the "I'm sick of all you hypocrites" to "I won't
let them push me away", espescially the "AWAAAAAAY" part of it; The
"I seat down with my son" to end of "The Crimson Sunset".
- LITS: The "Once we admit... we're dying" part.
- TKH (James's version ofcourse - esspecially on LATM): "When I go back
again, will it be the same?". That's emotion.
---------------------------------------------
To the jammer who said I forgot LtL in my "Nothing is sacred" response:
Shit! how could have I forgot it? ;-)

Sounds to me like whoever reviewed the album didn't listen to it.
There isn't a real Stick solo on the disc... and I don't recall a
serious Myung solo on the disc either.
The Chapman Stick is only very obvious on NM, and it's only present
on two songs off the disc, to my knowledge. Everything else sounds

ROFL! I know it's tempting. It's tempting for me to get on a plane

Studio covers? It's not live... maybe some older outakes... maybe
redo some older songs (WDADU?) Perhaps voice interviews... I doubt
CD Rom Media... This is an interesting puzzle. I can't wait to see
