Hey Ytsejammers!
I finally revamped my web page, only after 13/14 months of stagnation.
But it's redone. Not complete, but MUCH BETTER than before. Hope you
check it out and let me know what you think.

thanks
Bruce
PS. Any word on Powermad in Baltimore. Such as when everyone is
playing and where the hell Tall Cedars Hall is? Has anyone tried
calling Global Connections?

Ahh, guess I'll join on in for this thread... for me, the most
chilling/intense DT moment is the few seconds between Eve and Learning
to Live on Lost in the Sky, where there is sort of a crowd chant
combined with the ending of Eve & beginning of LtL. That, and I guess
the piano intro to Surrounded between WfS and Surrounded when they did
the 2 as a medley on the I&W tour (such as on LitS, the boot)

I just recently found an old magazine article on Dream Theater from a magazine called "Heavens Metal." I was a Christian Heavy Metal Magazine that had a column called "What So and So Sez" in which they would interview secular artists.
This has a GOOD interview with Michael Portnoy. This was just after Images and Words was released. It has got a good explanation of the meanings of the songs "Pull Me Under" and "Another Day" (which I am sure Chris Merlo will want to mention are already in the Faq).
It also mentions that Pull Me Under, not only is loosely based on Hamlet, but on the life of Jesus Christ, and the similarities between the two.
I have transcribed it and put it on my home page.

Well, since i haven't seen a full review yet of the Irving Plaza show... I guess i owe the Ytsejammer community one :)
Let's start from the beginning shall we...
My plan to arrive early failed quite miserably. We missed the 5:58 train and we were not waiting another hour to catch the next one. So, we decided to drive in. What a mistake that was. We arrived at Irving Plaza a little after 8:15pm and a little after 5 or 6 near misses with those damn NYC taxi drivers. There was still a line around the block but moved kinda quickly. We entered the building to find a spot right in the middle of the floor. The crowd was good that night. Still crowded, but not that "I can't move my arms or breathe" kinda crowded. There i was introduced to one of our very own YtseJammers, Al (I hope thats yur name, cause i think thats what i heard you say :). Didn't meet any other jammers until after... So here we go, on with the show....
Yur standard basic setlist. But at the request of another jammer [Chris Groves] i'll include one..but it is not even close to the order... The show started with Big Wreck. I wasn't impressed (again). Saw them at New Haven, weren't impressive there either..felt kinda sorry for them though, the crowd was screamin at them "You Suck" "You Blow" "Play Some Slayer". The lead singer actually replied.."Does it look like i know any Slayer? How about some Simon and Garfunkle?"..Anyway, their songs pretty much sounded too much alike, they were so drawn out, it was just getting quite boring. They don't sound BAD, but i just can't get into their music..oh well, on with the good stuff...
The five unreleased songs played over the PA then 'Rooster' came on. The crowd was unbeleivably siked! Derek came on and started groovin with his keyboards. Then all the members finally took the stage and the crowd went friggin nuts!! Portnoy looked very happy because of this along with Labrie... They started off with
Lines in the sand : great opener actually, didn't think it would be, but it is. The backing vocals were great too. They make the song sound more full.
New Millenium : I like this song more and more, everytime i hear it live.
Peruvian Skies : What else can i say? just beautiful.
Burning My Soul : What a great kick ass song! sounded better this time around, a little more crunch.
Take Away My Pain: can you get any more emotional? Much better than the album version. The song sounds much better without the drums starting it up.
Just let me Breathe: I love this song...it just keeps going and going from begining to end.
Change of Seasons: great as always...It's great how it just pops up during the show...
Pull Me Under: No matter how many times i hear this song, everytime i see it live, it's just like the first time i heard it.
YtseJam: The solos were AWESOME! the drum solo seemed a little longer than the one in New Haven, CT.
Metropolis: well, what do you think :)
The band stopped cold right before the last verse (finished after). This is where Mike brought out his daughter Melody. What a cutie :) (Baby, not Mike) Then, a little suprise. Thats right folks, Nightmare Cinema. Petrucci on Drums, Portnoy on Bass, Myung on Keys, Derek on guitar, and James on vocals...
Perfect Strangers: not as tight as Dream Theater but not too shabby :) Looked like the band was havin a great time!! almost as much as the crowd was. Derek and Mike runnin around all over the stage. It was certainly a sight to behold.
Thats about it for the show...I probably forgot a song. oh well
I had the pleasure of meeting Wisha for a second time... and had an encounter with the YtseGoon and his funky hat! we all waited in the freezing cold for two hours after the show along with 30 or so other people.
First one out the door was Mr. Petrucci who graciously signed everything and anything the people had to offer..all except one guys ass :) Next out was Mr. Myung who ran for the bus, but didn't quite run fast enough :) Everone surrounded him and was again gracious enough to sign autographs and press the flesh. Mr. Labrie was next, answering questions about his home town near Toronto and my friend, Rich's question about how many octaves he had (4) which kinda stumped him. Someone asked James if he played any other instruments. He replied that he also plays drums, then someone asked why he didn't play them on Perfect Strangers. This brought out James' question of 'Who is gonna sing?' someone replied 'Mike', which James replied "Yeah...Right...Mike" :) Mr. Sherinian came out with a lovely young woman clinging to him. I asked him what it was like workin for Alice Cooper. He said it was great and would be playing New Years Eve in Detroit with Alice. He said he had the night off. Last but not least, The Man himself, Mr. Portnoy. He had to go somewhere but gave his word that he would be back to sign autographs. After a little bit, he did indeed return. Tried to pry a little info outta him about the Christmas CD. He said I'll just hafta wait (what can i say, i'm just impatient :) He DID say it wouldn't be live material, and it would not be the unreleased songs from FII. So now my question is..What does that leave? :)
Just wanna finish up by saying the guys were GREAT and thank them for an awesome show and stickin around to hang out with the fans in the freezing cold!
I apologize for the length of the post!

Hey Guys,
I have to disagree with those who think LitS is a bad opener. For those of you who haven't seen DT live on this tour yet, the intro to LitS is SO ballsy and dramatic. It starts the show off at about a 10. By the end of the show, it's well past 11:)
Later all!

DOH! I can't beleive i forgot THREE songs! Voices, Hollow Years and Scarred
Voices: Seemed better than new haven and i don't know why
Hollow Years: This song needs to get played on the radio!
Scarred: Kinda funny how this rare song became a permanant one in the set.
I also forgot to mention that Mike said 'Trail Of Tears' will more than likely show up on the second leg of the tour. Later YtseJim

I read Mr. Brito's mail about finding the "perfect order" to play the songs on each DT album. I admit there is a certain amount of pace that you want for your listening... three ballads in a row would be really depressing to hear, right? However I have never found a really good order for the music because there always seems like something out of place. On FII, I think that YNM doesn't follow NM well, and that HY doesn't follow PS well, but OTOH I can't think of an order that would work well for those songs. I agree that TOT should be last and NM should be first. Beyond that... who knows. With that in mind, I generally hit "random" whenever I'm playing DT discs. Oh sure, it splits up AMBI, HK/LITS, and WFS/LTL on their respective CDs, but the pure surprise and the element of the unknown add a certain concert-like feel to listening to the CDs. Just my opinion.
I'm about a week behind in e-mail just now, so if you e-mailed me and didn't hear back, bear with me, I'll get it done within the next couple of days, caught up to zero again. :) It's been a VERY busy week.
In other news, my web page has been updated. Please feel free to give it a look if you're a bootin' kinda person. :)

Hmmm...goosebumps....
I think:
The end bit of Take the Time. All of Space Dye Vest. The solo(s) in Scarred. That kind of "running" riff in the heavy part of Peruvian Skies (simple but effective). When it kicks back into the opening riff on Ytse Jam. "Does this voice the wounds of your soul?" in CIAW. "Watch the Sparrow falling..." in PMU.
Non DT:
The first lead break on Arcturus' first song from the first album. The victim of changes bit of "Victim of Changes" by Judas Priest Most of "The Last Sunset" album by Conception. Most of Opeth's two albums. Most of Malmsteen's "Trilogy"
There's more but thats all I can think of now....
Cheers

For those that missed it the first time:

A T T E N T I O N A L L Y T S E J A M M E R S
*******************************************************************************
In celebration of BIG WRECK's tour with DREAM THEATER, Atlantic Records, in conjunction with YTSEJAM, is pleased to announce JAMMIN' WITH BIG WRECK:
an exclusive contest you will only find here on the jam. Those of you who have already seen BIG WRECK on the DT tour can attest to the fact that this Boston-based group delivers a tight and furious set of guitar-driven rock that is unmatched by anything topping the charts today. Comparisons here on the jam have likened the band to everyone from Soundgarden to Stevie Ray Vaughn to STP.
HOW IT WORKS: The first 10 people to PRIVATELY e-mail me the correct answer to the Big Wreck trivia question at the bottom of this message will receieve a Big Wreck Prize Package, which will include: publicity photos, bios, stickers, and promotional flats. Of these 10 people, I will select one Grand Prize winner who will receive, in addition to the aforementioned items, the video for the band's current single "The Oaf." To have a shot at the Grand Prize, all you have to do is include in your e-mail answer a short little blurb about why you think you should win the Grand Prize. It's that simple. Once the ten people have been selected, I will post the names and e-mail addresses of the winners (and the grand prize winner) to the jam. Upon seeing this, the winners will then send me their mailing addresses PRIVATELY.
WHERE TO SEND YOUR ANSWER: rrivera@zoo.uvm.edu
PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately, this offer only applies to jammers residing in the United States. Furthermore, only the first ten responses will be accepted. Any response posted publicly on the jam will be considered null and void. You also must be on the jam to win (meaning no forwarding this message to your cyber-pals who aren't on the list nor to alt.music.dream-theater). Lastly, by entering this contest you are not going to be put any worthless mailing lists. It goes no further than here, so relax.
AND THE QUESTION IS: What does each member of Big Wreck play?
HINT: Go to to www.bigwreck.com or the Atlantic Records Homepage at www.atlantic-records.com to find out the answer.

I can remember the exact place i was when i first heard this song and i loved the acousticness of it, i also love acoustic solo's, so i was so disappointed when this one seemed to finish before it started.......
