This always bugs me for some reason. I just don't see why a song has to
be completely revolutionary to be good. I can see where they are coming
from to some extent, but I rather listen to a song that sounds cool to me
rather than something just because it's different than anything else.
Maybe I am just weird...

Hi everyone!
Okay, I have a few more minutes to mention a few things that I found out on Tuesday. First of all, the Liquid Tension project may have the release date pushed back as Mike said they had just heard the mixes of the songs and were not satisfied with them so the songs will be need to be remixed - probably push the date back by a month or two. Also in regards to LT, Mike mentioned Magna Carta had contacted him about it earlier this year (March?) around the same time they contacted Terry Bozio (who's project ended up being BLS). Anyway, Mike sent a list of people he wanted on it and originally Billy Sheehan and Jens Johannsen <sp?> were going to be on it - no guitar players on the list had been picked (among the guitarists on the list was Dimebag Darrell). Anyway, DT got the OK to record FII so Mike's side project was put on hold. After FII was done, neither Billy nor Jens were available, but Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin were. Apparently none of the guitarists on Mike's list were available, so John Petrucci was asked and agreed. John P had not been asked previously since Mike said this was his project and didn't wanted it associated with DT (nothing against JP of course).
Other things - Mike gave me photo copies of most of the setlists up to 11/18, so when I have some time I'll type these up and send them to D-Man for the setlist project. Mike also gave me photo copies of the studio log!! I will type this up when I get the time and it will be made available to all, some way or other - D-Man, you up to putting this on your page???
I'm sure there's more, but this is all I can think of at the moment.
One last thing - in regards to re-recording Metropolis part 1 - I'm way behind on Jams so I dunno if anyone mentioned this but... being that several of the shows have been recorded on ADAT (Fix shows, and at least the Chicago Touring into Inifity gig), there's a possiblity that a live version with the extended jam may make an appearance somewhere - maybe a b-side, maybe on the Xmas CD, maybe even on the M2 CD - who knows. Also, while it seems logical that DT would record the unreleased songs to include on the M2 CD, doesn't it seem logical that maybe the band may even have more tunes by that time to record and put on M2? I recall hearing that it originally ACOS was gonna have 2 other new songs (I think one was Raise the Knife) and later opted for the Uncovered tracks. So who knows what will appear on M2, if it even appears (I'm sure it will, but ya never know).

I had this loooonnnng ago, and traded it. I definitely think I ended up on the better end of the deal (and I don't even remember what I traded it for).

I don't post much, but last night was the most incredible musical experience of my life. Me and my friend waited in the front of the line for several hours in the pouring rain before even getting in. About 7:00 Petrucci, his wife, and Portnoy got into a minivan right next to us by the door and started talking with us. They said they would sign auto's after the show, and that they were going to get some food. The guy behind me walked up to MP and showed him his Majesty symbol tatooed on his arm. Mike replied, "looks better than mine" and they pulled away after MP autographed the guy's awake shirt. I couldn't believe where I stood: front row right under LaBrie's microphone. After Lines (the opener) LaBrie gave us high-fives. I could see fingers moving all night. The set-list was great, LaBrie was on, Derek was excellent, Portnoy hilarious (broke his drum and then busted on the guy fixing it), Petrucci made it look effortless, Myung totally into his Chapman stick. That was cool watching him play it. LaBrie was sticking the Mic in our faces during PMU and Lie. **** for the performance. After the show I waited patiently in the rain, and I saw Derek. He said his favorite song off FII was "Lines" he autographed my FII cd. Then LaBrie came out and signed autographs, then Myung. I asked JM what TOT was about and he said "it would take too long to explain" I told him I really liked his lyrics and he shook my hand and said "thanks" Petrucci came out and he got stampeeded by the fans. Finally MP. They were fucking cool as shit. I thought I may get autographs, but to actually get questions and answers was cool. The best musical experience of my life. Thank you Dream Theater. C-Ya in Philly. I got all 5 autographs on my FII Cd cover. Looks pretty cool. Sorry so long.

hi. quickie: i imagine jammers type OFB instead of DT for the same reason metallica released load - you do something for years and you start to get sick of it, so you change and try something new. it's a refreshing change of pace. Well, i still type DT and headbang to puppets, so i dunno what this revelation means to me at this current point in my life. But hey, it was my thought for the week, i didn't want to let it go to waste... Moo.

I could not figure out which of the 37 addresses in your sig was the one I should write to, so it's going to the jam.
I think you have a GREAT idea! Like a Consumer Reports for colleges or something. I would just be careful not to make it look like all schools suck and people should just stay home. You might want to point out a few of the positive aspects of the schools you put on the page. Otherwise, I think it's a really cool thing and I would gladly support it.

Hey all, I found something...kinda interesting on the thrash song "The Disintegrators" off of Cryptic Writings. I didn't pick it up until I put the headphones on last night and went to sleep to the CD. At 0:29 into the song, you can clearly hear a voice saying "6-6-6" in the right speaker. Anyone else hear this? I thought it was kinda interesting considering the religious beliefs some of the members of MD have.

well now, see, here's a thread!
Question: If You Had To Pick that One Part Of That One DT Song That Always Makes You Cream, What Would You Pick?
What I'm looking for here is not just any old cool part that you really like but the part that sends chills down your spine and makes you want to laugh and cry. A non DT example, for me, is when the tubular bells kick in in Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells II, or when the rain comes down in IM's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
For me, I think it would probably be in Voices with the "And then what would you do" sample, around there.

What? That's a complaint you could make about, say, RUSH, but what do you call all the pasted-together interlude/intros to songs, or that fact that some songs they'll only play little snippets of and then transition right into something else?
The thing I LOVE about DT is that they LOVE to mess with their stuff. Nothing is sacred. God bless 'em. Listen to some of their demos. How they ever figure that one song should become three and so forth, is beyond me.

Just in case any of you in the Boston area don't have APSOG yet, it is availabole at Newbury Comics for $9.99, a very nice price for some incredible music.
Oh, once again, I went on a music shopping semi-spree and bought Marillion "Essential Collection" to try to get a taste for them, and Enchant's A Blueprint of the World, after getting their other CD... still have yet to listen to either...

Well, I guess that's where our differnces lay. FII is music that I want to listen to...especially now a-days that my taste for metal is dying...I dont like it 'just because it's DT'
>xpect fans to accept it because of the "statement" you're making. You >have a responsibilty to give the people whatever it is that makes them like >you. Otherwise you risk becoming a band that I am not allowed to mention >on this list, that starts with M and ends with A and has BULLSHIT in the >middle.
Well, frankly, as a musician, I could never write music for other people. Even if I had crazy fans, that would eat my feces if they ran into it. If my tastes and intersests in music change, I'm not gonna keep on writing music I wouldnt find interesting anymore, just to please fans. Of course I was disappointed by MbullshitA :) too, but If they're happy doing what they do now, fine. I can use my money on other CD's. I never even condider that any of my favorite bands/musicians, would even consider pleasing me...i just want them to keep on doing what they like and keeping it all fresh. If they go off on a tangent I dont like, I'll just go on my own way until they join me again, if they ever do...
Music is an artform, not a product.
BTW , I came up with a short, compact definition of 'maturity'. The less you let your ego get in the way of your music, the more mature you are.
Think about it, how many time have you kept on tinkering on a song, just because it's too simple? It happens to me all the time...why not just let inspiration guide you?
live easy, Ernesto

ARRGH! I wasn't into kewl music when Headbanger's Ball was on in the US. I wish I could get a hold of the Drain sth interview from the European HB. Huh huh...hey Beavis...okay nevermind. eMpTyV is all REALLY crappy shows now. It bites ass...all those really shitty GenX shows absolutely make me sick (as do the really awful rap videos with scantily-clad "bitches" all over the place). The only worthwhile show on eMpTyV is Daria...what a kickass show....

Kickass. Some people say I'm good, but my "I can play crap" is part of a more generalized "I suck at everything" attitude I have...I've felt this inadequacy thing my whole life, for at least one BIG reason I know....

Uhmmm, maybe, but I think it has more to due with the unsettling one-more-than-6 effect. Most "normal" music-listeners (read: people who know next to nothing or absolutely nothing about music) find odd time signatures hard to keep a tapping foot steady to.
><shudder> That's why I always wanted to hide behind a full-sized double >bass... :-)

Well, not all of us are so...striking. If you only like the band for the girls' looks, then you miss the whole premise of the band and should just go listen to the Spice Whores. :( I admit I'm jealous of Drain's looks, but hey, not all of us are gifted with Scandanavian-type blood.

And you won't just find one walking around. We are rare because we dare to shuck off the fetters of a stereotypical society! HA! HAHAHAHA! (okay, forgive me, I'm tired) Seriously, not many people, whether male OR female, are able to basically ignore the general populous' ideas of what they should do or not (the NORMALITY thing). The reason there are goths now, aside from a few of them, is because suddenly there is a large enough population of them, and others are willing to fit in with SOME group.

Hmm, if anyone TOUCHED my guitar without my permission I swear to my DT signatures and my p2 266 that I would literally beat the shit out of them (ahhh, heavy boots and fast kicks!). I ALWAYS play with the door closed, and I find it really hard to play either the oboe OR the guitar with ANYONE watching. I get really tense. Fortunately for my formal performance career, I've been better about relaxing when I play oboe...but that's not what I'll talk about here. Another problem for me is that I hang around with some really amazing guitarists who have been playing for near 10 years. I've been playing like almost one and a half. Is this a fair comparison? Not really, but I can't get over the fact that I suck in comparison to them, so I obsess about it...plus, as I said before, I already have a general "I suck" sort of philosophy.
>> I tend to listen to more modern stuff, but I have nothing against the >> Bangles, so don't start testosterone-flaming me ;) >But in this case I'll make an exception. How dare you insult the >Bangles! Your musical narrow-mindedness makes me sick to my stomach! I. > aw forget it. My hearts not in it. ..
And why should it be?! I didn't diss them at all!!! I merely said *I* didn't listen to that kind of music. Am I to say that they suck or something? NO.
Re: JP again >I have to talk to him about becoming a student... I would _kill_ to study >with Petrucci
Oh MAN, I couldn't even work up the nerve to ASK. I'd DIE to study with him...even though it would be pointless to die...oh well hehe. Figures of speech never hurt anyone.... Anyway, that brings me to a new point: what the heck are guys going to do with a female student?! Especially in such a testosterone-laden area of performance.... I'm almost afraid to GET a teacher, because I don't know if a) they would want to teach a GIRL :p, or b) how they would treat a girl vs. a boy student.

You sound like my friend, Brian...heh.... [side note: I saw Machine Head with Drain sth and Corrosion of COnformity; great concert (LOUD :)!] I like to occasionally pump loud music from my little system here, but I usually tend just to turn up my vol. level on my amp and start playing "Seasons In The Abyss" or "Crucified." :) Everyone at this school--okay, ALMOST everyone--is a spoiled rich brat or a neohippie who gets stoned/drunk every day (or at least every Thurs-Sun) and doesn't have any respect for ANYONE with different priorities. DTC!!! COOL!!!!
Hmm... I'd say most of the old-school guitar/keyboard duet work. Stuff like the duet breaks to "The Killing Hand", "Afterlife", TTT, or "Metropolis". Heck, that's why I began liking DT in the first place. The thing that stuck out in my mind about them (after only hearing 2 songs) was the duet work in the TTT video, and the split screen effect. That's still my fav video to date. Others? How about the kinda-like-Yngwie-but-with-class shred solo in Erotomania? The fast solo in Lie? Yeah, those are great. Definite catching points for me. How about ALL of "Space Dye Vest"...yeah definitely. As for the new material....hmm...the WILD drum stuff in LITS. I can't even begin to FATHOM what the heck he's doing. I wish I could see this live, but I live in Arizona (seeing Megadeth live 4 times in the timespan of 6 months will have to do :). I'm a guitarist, and I have to say that Portnoy is my favorite part of DT. That's a BIG statement coming from me. Only Ted Kirkpatrick (Tourniquet) and Nick Menza are in the same league with him and Peart in my book.
Enough ramblings! Goodnight, and cheers to the start of a good thread!
