Is this the infamous Majesty that wouldn't let OFB share their name? I
wonder if they're happy with all the unreleased material Mike Bahr helped
them put out..... ;)

Rogerio asked about Gentle Giant...I haven't heard Playing The Fool, but
I do have Acquiring The Taste, Three Friends, and Interview. GG is one
of the most wacky, original bands I've ever heard. They have incredible
versatility--they can go from complex madrigals to a fuzzed-out guitar
solo to some dissonant percussion interludes to a catchy prog riff in a
matter of moments. The music is unbelievably complex sometimes, but the
emphasis is on the composition, rather than the performance. Acquiring
is really mellow, and the lead track "Pantagruel's Nativity" is awesome.
Very dissonant, but cool. Three Friends is a concept album, and a really
good one at that. (By the way, each member of the band can play like
five different instruments, and they'll use all of em in one song.) It's
got some heavier moments than Acquiring. Interview is a lot more
accessible, and there's a lot of Hammond B3 on this. Very angular, kind
of like Keith Emerson and Ian Anderson had gotten together. "Another
Show" and the title track absolutley rock. Recommended. (P.S. 1/1 isn't
a time signature. It is, theoretically, just the way g-sharp major is a
key. You'll never see it. G-sharp major would have eight sharps in
it--it's enharmonic to a-flat, so the only reason you'd write in g# is
to be an asshole.)

Hey you jammers!!!!
I finally got the damn modem on my new computer to work. That means I'll
be reding the jams everytime I visit my house in Nogales, that's once a
week. I'll have tons of stuff to read about everytime I get home...
Anyway... Damn, FII is the greatest album!!! I love it. I've played the
CD and the tape more than 300 times each. I can't get enough of it. I
agree with the ones who are saying it's the album were the whole band just
kicks ass... I get excited even talking about the damn thing. I hope
everyone likes it as much as me. Oh, to those who think JL is a arrogant
SOB, you are wrong!!! Just because he want's to succeed does not mean he's
trying to be a sell out or anything in that manner. I hope you guys are
enjoying the new album, we've been waiting long enough. I hope all is well
with you all.
CONGRATULATIONS DREAM THEATER!!! On making another work of art... You guys
rule!!! May this album sell in great proportions, you deserve it.:)
Sincerely,
Hector Crisantes

As for the whole long NMS crap that was posted by Mike Bahr, I
have to opine that it doesn't belong on this list. I thought we
went through that already? Just because someone insults MB's
virtue elsewhere, that doesn't mean it should be fodder for the
jam. Someone would argue that things are too far off the DT path
as it is. *shrug*
I bought a cool cd yesterday some of you might be interested in.
It is a cd by Jens Johansson, Anders Johansson, and Allan Holdsworth
called "Heavy Machinery." It is quite impressive, and has plenty of
strange time sigs, for those of you who get off on that sort of thing ;-)
FYI - Circuit City is selling FII for $12.99, which is two bucks less
than Best Buy. As some Motown group once sang, "Ya better shop around."
Or something like that...

>=A0<Picture>=A0File Under: Heavy prog-rock, turgid with silent lucidity Why=
is
it that instrumental prowess seems to preclude any ability with language or
poetry? It's as if the study required to make an everyday guitarist and his
band into pyrotechnic phenoms makes it impossible for them to get their
thoughts on paper without either: a) generating nonsense, or b) masking the
nonsense with highfalutin' phrases, like, say, "falling into infinity."=20
>
>East Coast prog-rockers Dream Theater are as guilty as any of their peers
of getting caught up in would-be poetics, but their problems only begin with
their lyrical clumsiness. Whatever chance more reflective tunes on Falling
Into Infinity might have had to strike an emotional chord is usually drowned
in a sea of overplaying, with drummer Mike Portnoy the worst offender.
Singer James LaBrie is guilty too, spreading it on as thick as cream cheese
in an effort to squeeze feeling out of sappy lyrics. Yet given all that,
there are moments on Falling Into Infinity of real skill, and even a few
spots where Dream Theater comes up with new ideas, rather than copying some
combination of its influences. The introduction to "Burning My Soul," the
leadoff single, gets a sexy groove going with a chugging bass line and a
soulful organ part, while "Anna Lee" is a fairly pretty ballad, despite its
inane, heavy-handed lyrics ("They invite your hands to fill their needs/
Will you be the same?/ Shameless smile/ To steal from you the innocence that
bleeds").=20
>
>At best, Dream Theater hammers out its licks with energy and precision; at
worst, though, the band is only too happy to deliver drivel like: "Sometimes
the anguish we survive/ And the mysteries we nurture/ Are the fabrics of our
lives." Hey, it worked for Queensr=FFche, didn't it? --Bob Remstein=20

Blackened is almost all in 4/4, with only some measures in 2/4, 3/4 and
7/4.
Fight Fire With Fire has it's acoustic beginning in 3/4, and the rest
in 4/4. 1/1 is a quite unusual, not to say NOT ever used, measure. =) A
little music theory (as the one I have, MUCH litle... =) ) would clear
that thing out.
BTW, before some music maniac comes and flame my ass off, that's what
thw songbooks say, I don't know enough about music to get up to that all
by myself. =)

If everybody can stand another "how I was converted to DT story"....I was watching Headbanger's Ball on MTV long, long ago, back when I still thought Skid Row was awesome. Anyway, this really evil sounding so ng came on....(it was "No Rain"...just kidding ;) ) of course, it was Pull Me Under....MTV played an edited version of it, only about 4:30 instead of the full 8 minutes on I&W. I hadn't gotten any new albums in a while, so I went out and got it. (At a mall, no less. Just went to Musicland, walked right in and got. Sheesh.) On my way back home, I was like, what the hell is this? And what is up with that cheesy-ass synth? Of course, I took an immediate liking to Another Day...I kept waiting for a speed metal song, which is what I thought DT was *LOL* I listened to the whole thing, but I didn't listen to it again for about two weeks. I picked it up again, and I noticed the guitarist kept changing what he was doing....and that drummer is really fast...then I tried to play along with Learning to Live, and I couldn't do it, so I listened to it more carefully...enlightenment, ladeez and gents, enlightenment. =)

I really don't understand why ppl find the lyrics to AL cheesy or bad. I can't find anything wrong with them. In fact, IMO, they're one of the better-written lyrics on FII.
And I insist...the ToT intro does NOT sound like Xanadu. Stop paying so much attention to the damn wood blocks:)
cool FII moments: On LITS, The bluesy fill Derek does b4 they go back into the da(C)-dumm(D) riff in the middle section.
The keys solo on ToT, when the slide guitar comes in...tingles anyone? :)
Right b4 the first verse on JLMB, when JP hits that funky chord w/ the wah-wah, and Mike goes back to the tom-tom groove. Awesome.

That's cool, I'd lve to see Faith No More. If I still lived in SLC, then I probably would've! I was born in Murray, a 'burb of there.

It looks like from my last post that a lot of you haven't heard of Meshuggah. Well, if you want some crazy time signatures- you'll find the album "Destroy Erase Improve" full of them. For those of you who crapped the first time you heard "Metropolis" for the first time (and the 1000 times after that..) you'll definitely appreciate these guys. And so a bunch of you don't go out and buy it expecting a progressive band- I'll tell you they're NOT! I don't know if I'd call them "death metal", but they are really heavy, and really good.
