    Hiyis

Just some irrelevant thoughts for y'all to mull over and then forget about...

DT touring Oz: this would be pretty cool. That's all I'll say. Why is it
that as soon as it's announced that the band are thinking of coming here,
all of the Australian jammers come out of the woodwork? Funny, that...

    ---

FII: still couldn't find it in any store in Australia, so I ordered it from CDnow. Here, then, is my review:

NM - very bloody cool YNM - bloody cool PS - bloody cool HY - very bloody cool BMS - very bloody cool HK - very bloody cool LITS - extremely very bloody cool TAMP - pretty good JLMB - bloody cool AL - very bloody cool TOT - bloody cool

I think that Hollow Years would make a great single, but I also think it would be a bad choice this early in the game. What if everyone buys the single and loves it, thinking that this is what DT always do? I think they should make sure they have a relatively successful single before releasing HY.

    ---

About the Elektra site: hello? Why did no one mention to me before that you can get the Lie clip in Quicktime from here? How long has it been there? For those that haven't downloaded it, it's only about 20 seconds - JP's solo, then part of the chorus. You only see JP and James (why doesn't anyone ever call him 'Jimmy'? I'm calling him 'Jimmy' from now on...)

    ---

Expecting my Seven Wonders disc in the next couple of days... I hate it when you know you're about to receive something, but you're not sure of the exact day, and when you get home from work you're always disappointed to see that it hasn't arrived...

    ---

The Official DT Page: lets do a petition and get the band to change it to Under a Cyber Moon! Yeah! Because I've got my photo there! We can do it, brothers and sisters (and other Family members)!

That's about all. See yis around.

    Hi!

    >2 things... first on a lighter note... looked at the song listing (for FII >as of a year ago...), now of course some of the songs aren't on there, but >for the one's that are... the time has gone down in every case....

The songs weren't shorted that much. Maybe they timed the demos including all pauses or something, or they were slower, whatever. Take Away My Pain and YNM were reworked, they cut LITS, and of course they cut the middle section of BMS -- which made IMHO this song a lot better! But I didn't hear any significant changes to the other songs. Maybe some drum pattern or solos or something, but that's it.

So don't be afraid that the label might have ruined some of the songs somehow.

    Later,

    Steffen

To those of you wondering how the new Judas Priest is: Tower in Burlington, MA has been giving free cassette singles of it away, and my friend picked one up. We played it in his car at a Dunkin Donuts at about 3 in the morning and I thought the Gates of Hell had been let wide open. People were walking up to us going, "THIS is Judas Priest? Man... I gotta get this...." (and yes, at 3 AM, Dunkin Donuts is a happenin' place). It's the heaviest, most evil shit I have heard in a long time - definitely NOT the Judas Priest I remember, and very close to death metal, IMO. Wild guitar tones, too. A definite buy - if you're into the heavier side of music, check it out.

I wonder if Alan Estrada is related to Erik in any way? Man, hope they don't have the same teeth! :) (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist that one....)

Can you believe those losers at Eleckra. Not only did they misspell the name of the band at lest twice on the page (see discography, "ACOS, Produced by: Dream Theatre") but they totally left out any information about WDADU and LATM. What the hell? They also misspelled Doug's Pinnick's name in the interview portion ("Appearing on LITS is King's X vocalist Doug Pinnice"). Knowing how we (the DT fans) are frustrated with their label's B.S., can you imagine how the guy in DT must feel?

    > When Petrucci, or >whoever says that they think their older material is "immature," it isn't a knock >down of anybody who loves that particular style of DT/progmetal/whatever, but a >reflection of what the artist thinks when he looks back at his art.

How true. I know that backk when I was writing a lot (short stories, poetry, lyrics, etc.), I got a lot of rave reviews for some of my work. A lot of it was probably friends "blowing sunshine up my ass", so to speak, but some of it was sincere. I look back on most of the stuff I wrote then, and it looks horrible to me. I can hardly stand to read it anymore. Does that invalidate the opinions of anyone that still likes the stuff? Of course not, it just means that *I* no longer like it.

(As a side note, there's only one story I ever wrote that I actually liked for more that a couple years after it was written. It was called "The Worst Way To Die", and it was basically an excuse to see how nasty I could be to the title character - e-mail me if you want to know what the "worst way to die" was.)

So I can understand how Petrucci can feel the way he does. We're not immature if we still like the old stuff, It's just not where he is today. Anybody else remember on the Awake tour where he said they wouldn't be playing anything off of WDADU? Same deal there, IMHO. Of course, your nipples may vary.

    > I'm thinking Met.2 will be like a stylistic >compilation of Dream Theater, with bits 'n pieces of WDADU, I&W, Awake, ACOS, FII, >and of course, something new and unexpected.

I don't think you'll see a stylistic "compilation" for exactly the reason I mentioned above. That's not what the band is doing now. I *do* expect something totally unexpected. :)

I don't know if someone has already mentioned them, but Black Jester is a pretty cool Italian progressive metal band. I got "Welcome to the Moonlight Circus" at the same time as Shadow Gallery's "Carved In Stone", so I didn't listen to it too much. But I brought it to work the other day and it's very good.

PS - Does anyone have their first CD? I think it's called "Diary of...." ???

You betcha. Its either Extinct Instinct or Instinct Extinct (I think that its the former). I just got it on a recent trip to Japan but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I also like their live EP. Unless they have doctored it up a lot in the studio, they sound pretty decent live.

    greetings all,

quick question/comment regarding the upcoming tour. i've been on the ticketmaster site and checked for Dream Theater. the few dates they do have are small, sardine can, general admission clubs/bars. now, i heard last year that they were gonna move up to bigger venues with reserved seating. what's the deal with them still playing these places? i think they're big enough now to fill a venue without cramming thousands of us into some phone booth. i want to see them again in the worst way, but i refuse to go to the birch hell again. how 'bout a small theater or something? like the theater under the garden? anyone have any info on this? being close to the fans is one thing, but as their fanbase grows, we fans are gonna crush each other.

    thanks for the time.

I've never seen them before although I've been listening for 6 yrs. now, and found out about 2 local shows for "Awake" after the fact (F@#%,F#@%,F@#%). I went to Best Buy first, saw it for $14.99, then went to an indpendently owned new/used store that had it for $13.99. Yeah, it's only a buck, but hey, it's still a buck :). And I think that was Smokey Robinson that sang that song. I could be wrong there, though.

Not like, "These guys > sound like DT," but more like "If you're a DT fan, you'll like this > band's progressive metal sound." That's pretty cool IMO. Apparently the > christian music industry may be more familiar with DT than the music > industry as a whole. I don't ever recall seeing a band compared to DT in > a band review (apart from the jam & some Magna Carta releases, of > course). Has anybody else noticed this? For the curious, the bands > compared to DT that I can remember were: Metropolis (duh!), Ultimatium, > Atomic Opera, The new King James album, Sardonyx, Majesty, Liquid > Eclipse, Sea of Dreams and Veni Domine. I have noticed this, but more in magazines that cover bands like that. I haven't seen it in too many stores. And I doubt that that particular Majesty was the one that kept DT from using the name because, as far as I know, this Majesty hasn't been around that long. Anyway, HM Magazine has used DT as a reference for bands a number of times, even in interviews with bands like Tourniquet and such. A lot of the bands don't really sound like DT, but do fit inot the genre (i.e. Atomic Opera). On to other things, looks like I MAY be able to make the Chicago show. Not sure yet, but I'm going to do my damndest :).
