I've been thinking................. (yea.. I know it is dangerous but I don't care)

I have only been in 'jam from digest 1699, so I am not veteran, but I think I have some
knowledge of the jam.. agreed? good... we shall go on...

All the time newbies join the list and start to ask: where are the samples in SDV from?
when is the new album coming out? in Live in Tokyo vid (btw, this vid is the 8th
most sold music vid in Finland RIGHT now) Kevin Moore's kb stand has some Japanese
what is this in engvish? Whalbums?
My gf doesn't like prog, I am making her a compilation tape of "easy listening prog",
    what should I include?

These wouldn't fit very well in Dream Theater FAQ, so I thought I should start to maintain
    YTSEJAM mailing list FAQ.......

The first version will be available by the end of the week (that means Friday)
    at http://www.hlti.fi/~opk/ytsefaq/

mail me if you agree (like I think Mike Bahr does :) or disagress or just want to
tell me what questions I should include...

    Take care

Okay, does anyone have the DEFINITIVE answer as to what the first U.S. DT
single is going to be? And WHEN we should be expecting our local rock
    stations to be receiving it?

According to Portnoy on the website, it's going to be "Burning My Soul"
and yet I keep hearing it's going to be "You Not Me"

Which is it? Which is the one I should be calling up my local stations
and DEMANDING to hear (as should you ALL!!!).

I just don't want to sound like a dork demanding BMS and getting YNM, ya
    know?

Any INFORMED responses welcomed. All others will be stripped naked and
    pointed and laughed at. ;)

    Hi

Yesterday, I've bought the new Genesis album "Calling All Stations".

I like it. It's better then many albums before.

Ray Wilson's voice is more like Peter Gabriel then Phil Collins.

To me the album is not commecial.

    Hi!

Well, it's NDTC, but if the guitar players can discuss 7-strings
and stuff like that, so can I. (Besides, 99% of the posts here are
    NDTC....)

    Well here it is:

I currently own a Roland JV-50 + an expantion board, what brings
me to 700+ sounds. Problem is that the JV-50 don't synthesize.
So, I'm looking for an additional keyboard. Now, the JV-50 has tons
of piano sounds and pad stuff and strings, so I'm basicly looking
for a keyboard that has mostly leads and hammonds.

I would have bought a Nord Lead or a JP-8000, but they're way too
expensive for a keyboard that provides only leads. (I rather
    get a Mini-Moog for 200$ with amazing sound than a JP-8000 for 2000$
    with less amazing sound....)

I've tried to get a Korg DW-8000 (the one that Moore uses. Know that
cool distorted organ on the 6:00 intro (and most of Awake)? Ever
listened to the cool leads on WDADU or I&W?). I've contacted a UK
company called "Phuture Sounds" (no, that's not a spelling mistake!),
but the fucker doesn't answer my mails, plus the final price including
shipment & taxes will be about 800$ - way too much for a 10-years old
keyboard that Korg doesn't support anymore....

    So, here's the question:

    1) Have any of you ever dealt with that company?
    2) Can any of you recommend a keyboard thay will fit to my demands?

Okay, here's a hint. If it's not an executable file, a zip file or program or such, it doesn't have any possibility of destroying your hard drive. If somebody actually did create an email that destroyed your hard drive just from reading it, it'd have to be some hellified code! So hellified that the programmer would have to account for all the different email programs that everybody uses, and the different electronic transfers it goes through.

I'm still reading email from my account at ASU, and if I got that email, it would theoretically wipe out a server at ASU...since I'm not actually downloading it onto my hard drive (it's a hyperterm link I'm usin' here) it won't hurt me.

So PLEASE, if you get any more "virus warnings" that say "do NOT read this email!!!" don't bother wasting your time forwarding it. It's just a hoax.

Sorry for all you "non-dethers" on this list, but the concert last night kicked SO much ass I have to report at least a little bit of it. If 'n all yer not interested in hearing just HOW much ass they kicked, press the delete key now.

:) I also post this 'cuz the Megadeth mailing list is run by a fuckin' prick who kicked me and several "friends" off for stupid reasons, and he sends me death threats every time I post about how much a prick he is. :)

    ON TO THE SHOW!

The show was presented by Miller Genuine Draft, and we ALL know how well those guys at the beer industry know music... >:P so the line-up was far beyond anything I've ever seen before...even more ackward than the Metallica Lollipalooza fair. But after an hour wait in the muggy Arizona monsoon air and brief stints from several Indians (why is it that EVERY metal show I go to there's some Indian dude making an ass out of himself?) KUPD finally opened the doors and let us into the America West Arena.

Here's what $28 *per ticket* got me, Vince, Dale, and our non-jamming friend Robert: (In order of appearance, the best band being the last)

The Misfits: WHOA! Punk on steroids and a very bad day! I've never seen these guys and I've only heard a couple of thier songs on the radio, and this show was just fun to watch! Being a punk band (yes, VERY punk) I had a little bit of difficulty telling apart the songs (it's always *song*,"1234"*next song*) but before thier set list was over, they had the ENTIRE floor of the AWA turned into the biggest fuckin' mosh pit I've EVER seen! It was SO much fun watching the Gravity Kills fans running for thier lives! *cackle*

The Nixons: The Phoenix fans ate these guys for dinner! When they came onto the stage they were overwhelmed by "BOOOOOOOOOO"s from around the arena and the only time they could get any positive response from the crowd was when they said "We'd like to hear some noise for Megadeth." Bottles, lighters, and assorted shit flew onto the stage hitting every member of the band and just when I thought the Dicksons couldn't take it anymore, the frontman approaches the mike between songs, "Alright, I understand that when you throw stuff at us, you're doing it out of love, so on this next song, show us all your love for the Nixons, Phoenix!" They ended thier set with the drummer trashing his set across the stage and the band members running off the stage.

Gravity Kills: I had bought thier first CD on an impulse buy and thought thier music was pretty good. I thought they would be a good band to see in concert, so I had a little bit of hope for this band, especially after hearing nothing but feedback and whining from the prior band (see above). What happened when the lights went down was the most insulting display of stupidity and corndogmanship I've ever seen. On the stage was a REALLY small drum set (it was like, a bass drum and a snare, and that was IT) and a keyboard mounted on this device that looked like something out of Krang's Technodrome. The frontman (some faggot in a tight black silk shirt and tight black jeans), the "guitarist" (I couldn't hear much of a guitar at all 'n didn't even know if he was playing that instrument!), and the monkeyboy (this guy is no musician) run out onto the stage. Monkeyboy starts swivelling this keyboard around and faking the keyboard playing, just slapping his hand in the same fuckin' area while you heard something else blaring from the speakers! THIS WAS THE WHITE MILLIE VANILLE! I've never shouted so much to get a band off the stage....in fact our group fell asleep through a couple songs! The sad part of this show was that the crowd was actually pumped up by this band.... I wonder just how many people knew that the monkeyboy wasn't even playing the keyboard....

MEGADETH: After suffering severely through those last two bands, we needed some death metal, and we needed it badly... Megadeth came out in the best shape and form I've ever seen/heard these guys on any recording, any show I've attended, EVER! AND VERY HEAVY!!!

Holy Wars...The Punishment Due Wake Up Dead Hangar 18 (it all gets blurry at this point, I was having waaay too much fun) Almost Honest In My Darkest Hour Sin Trust Use the Man (KILLER Tiger-striped double-neck flying W!!!) Angry Again A Tout le Monde Reckoning Day She Wolf Symphony of Destruction Sweating Bullets (what Deth concert would be complete without it?) And they altered a couple of thier songs by combining them into one (ala Mirror/Lie) with Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? and FFF (With Vic Menza on the drums)

I might have missed a couple songs...like I said, it was such a great time when Megadeth went on stage I was having way too much fun. These guys DEFINITELY made up for the shit we endured prior thier set (and more!).

And security was light! We should've taken Mike Bahr on his offer and borrowed his DAT recorder!!! Or even a CAMCORDER!!!! Our view was spectacular!

Okay, I've read all of the stuff about radio stations that won't\can't play\don't have DT stuff. I've also read all about radio stations that fit the format that don't have anything by Dream Theater yet. This aggravates the shit out of me! Literally, I am sitting in a pile of my own shit here! We all went out of our way to sign the petition to get DT in the studio, now are they promoting them properly? Are we and DT getting the shit end of the stick? Are we getting fucked over because East\West doesn't give a fuck about DT, or are they actually promoting this album well and we haven't given it a chance? If the answer is that we are getting the shit end of the stick here, maybe something needs to be done a.s.a.p. Maybe we need to get another petition together and sign it a.s.a.p. to get proper promotion.. Now what the hell am I talking about, What is proper promotion? In my eye, proper promotion is sending promotional disks to ALL radio stations that fit the format, and flyers, posters and promotional disks to companies that sell DT's disks... If they aren't doing this (in my eye) they aren't holding up their part of the bargain. The bargain being that when DT put their names on the dotted line 9-10 years ago, that they would get proper promotion. Looks like E\W isn't holding up their part of the bargain. It looks like that if this album flops because of poor promotion that DT needs to sue the shit out of East\West? Or am I totally wrong for saying that? Can they even sue them? I'm really not sure. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. Well, that's about it. Lata, J

OK, Damon Fibraio, keyboard guru here. For organs, without buying the gear I have which is out of your price range anyway, lookinto the Voz, (spelling anybody) V3 module. It is only a few hundred bucks. Also look into emu's vintage keys or classic keys modules. The Voz is more programmible in the organ arena. I know Kevin used a Korg 01w for some sounds on IW. Good luck in finding one. For what you are looking for in synthesis, you would want an analog synth. The DW8000 is good, but there are better. A Minimoog will run you a lot of money, over 1 thousand bucks. Why? Because it is a vintage machine now and everybody wants it. Supply and demand, you know? I use a Roland XP50, which does great at everything, including organs, but that's not your answer. For leads, try the following. These will work also for any synthesizer sounds you want. Look for any synth with nobs. That's right. Try to find anything made by Moog, Oberheim, old Rolands, and such. Prophet may work for you as well as sequential. If you can't find anything, and really don't want to dump money into a JP8000 or Nord lead, which do more than leads by the way, a Prophecy could be found cheap. That unit only does leads, though. Modern synth seem to do well at analog sounds, but they are expensive. Korg's trinity, Derek's baby keyboard, does great, but the price is too high. So, look for any analog synth you can find. Actually, there a few racks that may help you. You can run them into the MIDI ports of you JV. Roland sells an expansion unit called Vintage Keys. MVT1, I think. Maybe it's Mvg1. Don't remember. It has about 255 sounds including leads, cool synth sounds, synth basses, and even electronic drums. Emu's Classic Keys and Vintage keys do the same thing. They all have all sorts of vintage keys sounds, even melotrons for that genesis/Yes/King Crimson touch. So, there you have it. The downside? They are not programmable without an editor to run on your computer. If you are looking for something you can tweak sounds on, don't go with tehese racks, find an old analog synth and a organ module. If you have about 1700, you can buy the Roland VK7, which is the most amazing Hammond B3 simulator I have ever seen, down to the drawbars and overdrive nob and ability to connect a real leslie. OK, enough. I will shut the fuck up now.

The gist of the message below ----- Opening of orders for Seven Wonders. All seven of Mike Bahr's past Dream Theater boots (plus bonus Mind Control) all on one disc digitally replicated in full-CD quality on ONE CD in MP3 format for $22.

The background ----- Hi, my name is Ryan Whitaker. I've been on the Jam since right after the 600th Jam. Some of you IRC people might remember me as Samsonite (Samsonadz!) when Skadz first opened the IRC server. E-Man, D-Man, Augie, Ben Lautthade =), Raytheon, DrX, Gabbo, ad infinitum were quite frequent members back then. I haven't been on there in the past year and a half though due to lack of time. Anyway, now that several may know me now, on with the sales pitch.

MP3s are the coolest things in the world these days. So, I had a good idea almost a month ago. I thought that it would be a good idea to put all of Mike Bahr's DT releases onto one CD. That way, people who have just joined the list and are new to his creations can get all of them in one fell swoop. People who already have the discs could benefit from this by the sheer convenience. In WinAmp, the MP3 player I include on the CD, I have a tracklist of 90 tracks, all available at the touch of a button. I can even set all 90 tracks on shuffle.

The technical details ----- Boy, did all those CDs take FOREVER to convert, even on my K6-233. =) All tracks were ripped digitally from the originals into WAV format. Then I converted all 90 tracks into MP3s using a 128000 bitrate, which is CD-quality. The result of this? Songs that sound EXACTLY the same as what's on the originals, and a CD that would take you half a day to listen to it in its entirety. To listen to it in full CD quality, you'll need a Pentium. I was using a 486/66 last month and I could still play MP3's, but I had to lower the quality a tad. The player I include is WinAmp 1.2, the best and free MP3 player for Windows 95. The CD is ISO 9660 compliant, so you will be able to use this on Macs and anywhere else as well, but you'll just have to find the player yourself. =)

The pricing explanation ----- Why $22 and not the oh-so-popular $20? I'm operating in a much smaller scale than Mike. My media prices are more than he spends due to the fact that I don't buy in near the bulk he does. Also, the CD liners were INCREDIBLY expensive. 50 full-color liners are costing me near $240! The front cover liner is a booklet with a page dedicated to each CD with full tracklisting. I always think that the CD liners are what give CDs their personality, so I spared no expense to make sure they look SWEET (at nearly $5 a pop, I sure hope so).

The CDs ----- Subconscious, Acoustic Dreams, When Dream and Today Unite, Antiquities, Scenes from a Memory, Precious Things, The Darkest of Winters, and as a bonus the 2-CD boot, Mind Control.

The ordering info ----- Forgive me if I revert to some of Mike Bahr's shipping options. Shipping is free in the Continental USA and Canada. Shipping to Mexico, South America, and the two dangling states is $2.00 for up to 5 discs, $5.00 for more than five. Everywhere else, $5.00 for one or two discs, $8.00 for more than two.

Send me e-mail at David-Whitaker@worldnet.att.net to reserve your order (and so I can begin production on your disc). Then send me snail mail with your name, address, e-mail address, and check or money order ($22 times number of discs) to: Ryan Whitaker - Seven Wonders 2001 S. 9th St. Waco, TX 76706

Seeing as I don't have a website and I'm dealing on a smaller scale, PLEASE e-mail me if you want an update on your order. The discs will be shipped out the very next day after I get your payment.

Fine print ----- All sales are final. If your disc is messed up, send it back within a week of receipt and I will ship you a new one along with payment for the stamps you used to ship it to me. If your computer is too slow, etc. then just get a new computer. =)

Final comments ----- Making a CD is a TON of work and is EXPENSIVE. And I didn't even have to collect the material. This gives me a whole new perspective and appreciation for what Mr. Bahr does. He's given me his blessing to go ahead with this project, and I sincerely thank him for that.

Thank you, D. Ryan Whitaker David-Whitaker@worldnet.att.net (note the hyphen!)
