Heh, that's a damn fine soapbox I constructed, isn't it?
Anyhoo, yer right...this problem is far and beyond the music industry
alone. I'm an artist who has yet to establish some sort of constant
income flow, but in searching for a career in the art world, I've found
one constant in almost every success story (excluding the great shock
artists of our time):
It's who you know, not how good you are. But I digest. I've stomped on
this topic far too much on this list. IT's time to take it
TO THE SPICE GIRL LIST! THEN THE GREEN DAY LIST! AND FINALLY
THE HANSON LIST!
Oh yeah, I also FINALLY got a real ISP, so for those of you I didn't run
into on the IRC last night, you missed a hysterical time. IT was a fuckin'
riot! But wait, I'm still trying to segue into my DTC for this post
(48 posts, and only 1.8 percent of DTC? Damn I'm loud. Is that correct,
Itchy?)
I Finally got a good listen to the new DT songs for myself, and I must say,
THEY FUCKIN' ROCK!!! Sure, Peruvian Skies sounds like Metallica...a
little too much in the beginning, but then it sounds a lot like
Metallica/Pink Floyd/Rush, and well, it sounds like Dream Theater. :)
You Knot Me...er, NOT Me kicks much ass too, and I'm probably gonna blow
out my PC speakers with Burning My Soul by the time the album gets out...the
distortion on those guitars in that song is HELLIFIED!
There's gonna be some serious nad busting when this album comes out.
(Ewwww, lemme rephrase that...) THis album's gonna kick ass! James'
voice is a LOT different than the last two discs, but it's a kick ass
voice nonetheless. Eckie likes it.
Anyhoo, all of the new stuff I've listened to definitely has the Eckie
Stamp of Approval (tm)! I don't know what all that bitching was about
back about a month ago. If some of the songs sound too "commercial",
well, DUH! DT has to make "commercial" songs if they want at least a
chance to be played on the radio!

My first semester in theory, the teacher let me play Erotomania in
class. Then he made me count along with it for the class. After class he
asked me if all their stuff was like that. Then he went out and got his
own copies. I think that anyone taking music theory should bring their
DT CDs with them every day, just in case :)

No kidding. The 'jam has been _way_ to uptight about this stuff
lately. If you want only DTC, go join Voices (or whatever the
moderated DT list is called.) The Ytsejam is here for it's users.
If someone wants to review a Marillion album, or have a once-a-week
football league post, big deal. It takes all of half a second to
skip it. Sure, we need some moderation to keep down the "Hey!
What's your TOP TEN Dream Theatre Songs, DOOD?" posts, but the
other stuff just ain't worth complaining about.

This is too weird. I was discussing music with two of my co-workers
today. I complained about prog being too underground, and the mainstream
stuff being crap. Dave agreed, and said the same was true of the folk
music he listened to. Jim agreed, and said the same was true of the
christian music he listened to. Then I get home, and there's a rant
on the jam about it. Deja Vu all over again!

And Remember the Alamo! I mean, remember Marillion! Their most-
commercial album (Holidays in Eden) was followed up by their most
progressive album (Brave.) IMHO, o'course. So if DT puts out
something half-commercial, it's hardly the end of civilization
as we know it.

They sound different because there are different makes. If the note says to
hit the snare, you hit it, you don't have more than one snare to choose from.

The re-release, released by One Way Records, doesn't have any liner...no
lyrics, and only a few small pictures of the band. I don't know if it sounds
better than the original for I've never actually heard the first, but the
music itself is execllent. Jus'g otta turn it up more than usual.

Seeing all these posts about "burning my soul" on the radio makes me
happy. I finally got to hear BMS today from my friend's elektra sampler CD
and I was just thinking that with radio exposure we will see Dream Theater
become Spice Theater, but rather DT becoming like Tool where many people
know about them but they are not caught in MTV's web.
Oh yeah, I like BMS. But I kinda get a little bored after that short
keyboard solo. But the beginning of the song is very cool.

I'm not into all this "I like the cover so I'll like the album" stuff, BUT,
the best title Dream Theater ever had for an album WAS When Dream And Day
Unite, even if the cover was stupid. The armpit thing didn't interest me too
much either.
Have we noticed an amazing quantity lately of all the one hit wonders? Early
80's were the same way - late 80's saw some musical sense (definitely not
completely sensible tho)- now the one hit wonders return to take advantage of
the path paved by Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.

Rest of album - SUCKS
Others? Lisa Bonham, Meredith Brooks, 3rd Eye Blind (Graduate SUCKS - I
heard a DJ play this song and say how cool it was but you could tell he
didn't really want to say it), Cake, Space Hog, Stabbing Westward, No
(skanky) Doubt, Toadies, Filter, etc... And we mustn't forget the one album
wonders like Alanis (will be anyway), Bush, Hootie, and many others I'm
forgetting. And this is just in the past YEAR AND A HALF! Unfortunately I
had some of those albums and when I bought them I was propagating this
musical nonsense. I've since sold them, and now I know better. Jammers,
DON'T BUY THIS CRAP!!! The stuff comes and goes in cycles - just like
business and the economy. We're in a down cycle right now. My friend was
telling me how Joe Satriani (I think it was him) espouses this view.
Granted, you will ALWAYS have your flashes in the pan - just part of the
biz. Good music comes, and good music goes, but it will always come back
again. We just need to be patient, which is hard when DT's got a new album
coming out and the morons at East/West are busy looking for Spice Girl and
Hanson sound-alikes and not promoting real music. And if you want to debate
me, debate my argument and not my selection of music/artists. I'm not an
expert and will never claim to be, so if you like No Doubt or Cake, or if you
think Jane's addiction had nothing to do with the beginning of alternative
music and think I'm an idiot, hold your tongue and talk to your pet rock. If
you don't think quality appears in cycles in the music industry, then we can
argue.
Lollapalooza is a good sign for us. This once "I gotta be there" music-fest
is now an overpriced under-headlined freakshow. I don't think the average
listener knows what he (or she) wants to listen to right now. Nirvana and
Soundgarden are gone while Pearl Jam makes crap. Let's listen to Bugs from
Vitalogy! What an inspiring and creative song! Uh, no. The roots of
grunge/alternative are giving way, and the tree will soon topple. Let's hope
prog takes its place!!!! Go YTSE-MILITIA!!! It's too bad Dream Theater
mentions Kurt Cobain and MTV in one of their new songs. Are they trying to
kiss ass?

As far as FII goes - BANDS CHANGE. Approach this album with an OPEN MIND and
you will like it. Some bands change their sounds for the better -
Soundgarden did it - just listen to Ultramega OK and you'll see what I'm
talking about. Some for the worse. Blood Sugar Sex Magic RULED! One Hot
Minute was alternative fecal matter. DT has changed - the jury will be out
for some time before we can say if it's positive or negative. In the
meantime, fill your 6CD changer with WDADU, I&W, LATM, Awake, ACOS, and FII,
crank up the volume, and wake the neighbors up. And if you've got some
singles and bootlegs, you need a bigger CD changer. ;-)

holy poop! that would rule! my music professor spent the whole class
wednesday trying to explain what an octave is and what harmonics are, and
then today he spent the whole class playing "when the saints go marching
in" 50 different ways trying to teach us what improvisation is. This guy
is very narrow-minded and doesn't seem to "appreciate" very many different
styles of music. Kinda sad coming from a music appreciation teacher.

Humm...
Is this Rudess/Morgenstein project the one that was the opening
act for Dream Theater during the "Home for Holidays" tour?? If yes, then I
think that they kick serious butt. Well, maybe a bit too heavy, but really
nice prog metal.

Actually, I find Lollapalooza seems to be getting better, because rather tham being the 'alterna-festival', this year it had a lot of variety...not to mention that THEY OFFERED KING CRIMSON TO PLAY ON THE BILL.

It is my understanding that JLMB is about the sad current state in which the music industry is in. I'd like to see MTV play THAT song=)

i have two of their albums (rockktroplis and "the flower king" by ronie stolt, and the band became "the flower kings") and they're actually really good. They're very symphonic (long, long songs) and they do tend to get a big drawn out, but overall it's a great symphonic progressive band.
