OK, a whole bunch of stuff here (and there are more posts
coming after this one)
Eckie's rant / people's responses, etc
First off, please don't send mail to the jam and say shit like
"right on, eckie" and that's it. If you have a decent response to it,
send it to the jam, but otherwise, please just mail eckie and tell him
personally how cool he is (or something)
On this front, I am very mixed. First off, I think the music
industry is in a very strange time right now. It doesn't know where
it wants to go. Its very obvious from watching MTV or just flipping
through the radio a bit. You have many different types of music
become very popular simultaneously and I think it is going to be very
interesting to see what happens.
Right now, I think so-called "alternative" music is on its way
out. I think alot of the newer "alternative" bands are actually
better musicians and can write better music. One of the ones that
come to my mind is Our Lady Peace. Their new album is very straight
forward rock and very listenable, not just alot of over distorted
guitars and screaming. I think the we can slam on our guitars for 2
minutes and scream some un-understable lyrics bands are quickly
dropping out and not re-surfacing.
I also hear bands that we talk about all the time here on the
"alternative" stations these days. Bands like Faith No More, Tool,
and others who alot of people on this list love are coming to the
forefront of music and knocking the people who don't know how to play
or write right off the radio. I definately see a trend towards more
straightforward rock or interesting rock (tool and fnm are perfect
examples of this) I think song writing is going to be alot more
prominent in the near future.
Along with these more rock-oriented bands coming forward there
are also alot of other genres coming more in to the spotlight. Two
huges examples of this are electronic music and ska music. I have
friends who have been listening to ska for 8 and 10 years, now I think
if I asked my mom, she would know who the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
are. On the electronic front, bands like Prodigy and the Chemical
Brothers are being heard on the radio and are becoming more and more
popular. A few years ago alot of people had never heard anything from
either of these genres and now they are on the radio all the time.
(quick editorial note here) Some people on this list dislike
and put down techno and industrial music saying it has not heart or
soul because it is done with computer and synths. Well, as a big fan
of industrial music, I have to disagree highly. I have many friends
in industrial groups and they put alot of hard work and emotion in to
their songs. Also, if you ever go to an industrial show, you will
definately see alot of emotion.
Lastly, there has been a huge explosion of hip-hop, rap and
dance artists in the recent past. Yet another genre of music which
was typical underground for a long time and now has come to a
forefront in music. (fun note: try watching mtv (when playing videos)
for a half hour and count how many videos have puffy daddy in them or
at least involved in them :)
So, in all I think many different types of music are very
in-style now, but I think that is going to change soon. When you
start hearing bad songs in a certain genre you know they are
overplaying it too much and too many bands are doing it. People do
eventually get sick of the same shit over and over again. I think
everything is going to get so overplayed that something new is going
to have to come forward and step up to listeners needs. I think that
it is going to be definately some sort of straightforward rock as well
as bands who do something different. I think bands like tool and fnm
are going to last a while and you are going to see some of the heavier
bands making more and more of an influence.

A bunch of administrative stuff here. First off, we are
currently at 1089 subscribers. I wanted to say a quick welcome back
to all the students who were gone all summer and are back now.
Just a couple of things I want to say NOW before shit gets
crazy here. I know the new album is coming out soon and I want to lay
down some ground rules before it comes out.
First of all, do NOT post "This album kicks ass!!!" and that's
it. I totally want to see reviews and peoples opinions, but don't
send in two lines. Write a decent review and send it in. I don't
want the list cluttered with stupid one line stuff.
Second, do not start fights and flame wars on this list. I am
going to be ultra hostile when the new album comes out and people
starting stupid fights and continuing stupid fights are gonna get
thrown the hell off this list. If you want to play flame wars, go to
alt.flame, do not stay here.
Well, I think those are the basic two rules. Keep the
comments and stuff to private mail. Mail reviews and new info and
other stuff like that to the jam.

Just to help document DT's expanse across the American Airwaves, they
just hit Minnesota's X105 with Burning My Soul. I caught the last 20
seconds of it and all I remember is James using his "Awake" voice. Of
course, that was the end of the song and it was at a climax so I have no
idea if he does that throughout.
But my point is that the wheels are in motion, my friends! I guess BOTH
singles are going to get a fair amount of airplay it seems.

The guitar files have been updated with extra files made detailing credits
and parts that I would like people to particularly check. It may take a
few days to update the web page, so either keep checking the web page or
wait for my post.
I have come to the conclusion that I do not want to do this detailed of a
transcription for the bass part. It is just too time consuming for me to
work on the instrument part that I don't even play. So here are my two
suggestions:
1) I can finish a general bass tab of the whole song with mistakes and
general accuracy.
or
2) A couple of you bass players may want to do a similar project as the
guitarists have done. You could take what I have done so far, or let me
finish it all, and then take that and really work on correcting it. But I
would need to have somebody step up to bat and take charge of it, recruit
people, organize it, etc. If there isn't interest, then that is ok.
Don't want to upset any of you bass players, but I'm worn out after the
guitar part. Once I get my second wind, I'll probably want to start
working on Moonbubbles or Bombay Vindaloo.
Let me know if any of you get any inspiration.

Does anybody know a phone number for Magna Carta? I know they have a web
address, but has anyone ever talked to them over the phone? I have emailed
them about 10 times over the past 1/2 year, and they have never once
answered my email. Thought I might try calling them instead.
Nobody mentioned having heard of the Flower Kings. I may go ahead and buy
one of their CDs. But if anyone has heard of them, I really would
appreciate your comments.
Mike Backof sent me a tape (a long time ago) of one song of Enchant and
listed the album as "Conscience of the King." I can't find any record of
this album even existing. Anybody have any info? They definitely have a
different singer.
Finally, any recommendations for groups in the vein of Enchant? Is Royal
Hunt any good?

Ya know, that really sucks when shit like that happens. Like with Asia,
one of my all time favorite bands when I was about 6 years old. I went on
and on listening to Asia and Alpha for about 10 more years. Surprised, I
found Astra, didn't like it, oh well, so much for Asia. Then I go into a
pawn shop one day and see this nice happy cassette of Aqua in the used bin
and I'm like "Holy shit!" The stupid thing is that I should have had some
way of knowing it was out 4 years prior, but, oh, well, Mr. marketing
exec at BigShot Record Co. doesn't think it would "be prudent at this
juncture" (conjunction juction, what's your function? sorry, that just
popped in my head - Korg) to market the CD because it "might" not sell.
And there's the bullshit point of the whole issue. Anything that gets
marketed will get bought unless it is absolutely, terribly, so incredibly
absurd that only Tammy Faye Bakker wouldn't even hang it from her
Christmas tree. If Dream Theater got marketed and was portrayed by the
media to be "cool," they would sell easily. All you'd have to do is show
various shots of them making out with each other in black and white with a
chicken clucking in the background and you'd have instant multi-platinum
sales. Not that I'd want to see that, but hey, it'd work.
Anyway, that's my rant for the month. Carry on.

I saw Flower Kings at ProgFest 97... they were good, a very fusiony type of prog band... kinda sleepy music at times. Roine Stolte is a good guitarist.

With no UK release planned for FII it seems all the UK jammers are comming out of the woodwork. Obtaining the new album should not be such a problem. Most of my CD purchases are through cdconnection.com anyway.
The real disappointment is that this could mean the lack of any UK tour dates. I think we UK Jammers need to get organised enough to take a trip overseas to see 'em live.
Although I am looking forward to the new album I wonder how well it will stand up against some of the new music I have been listening too since joining the jam. Reading about different bands must be one of the main benefits of the ytsejam..
Someone asked if WDADU had ever been remixed/remastered. I don't know if this has occured or not but it would be a great idea. I find the current WDADU unlistenable most of the time.

Hmm, well i think the first step would be to get all the ppl who feel strongly about this to get together. (And I'm not just talking about the industry, but everything else). If i had web-space, i'd set up a page for that, but I don't.:P But I will some day, and if somebody hasn't taken the initiative by then, I sure as heck will. But the sooner the better. Any volunteers to start this thing?

Hey all!
Well, I'm gonna snap out of lurk mode now, since I had to share this with the 'jam. I was in my Intro to Music Theory class today, and my professor was demonstrating examples of simple, compound, and complex meters by playing a few bits of songs. After playing some classical stuff and some alternative-sounding song to demonstrate the simple and compound meters, he said, "OK, here's something with a pretty complex meter to it...but we won't quite get to learning how to count it until later on." So, of course, DT springs to my mind before he starts playing it. And lo and behold, he starts playing the beginning to Caught in a Web. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. So after class, I asked him about it, and it turns out that he's a fairly big fan of DT, and that his friend's mother was one of the band members' landlord. He said that he had gotten one of the demos from before WDADU from his friend, but I'm not sure which one it was specifically. Anyways, I figured I'd mention it to everyone since it was one of the cooler classroom experiences I've had. :)
