            Well, after wanting to put in my $.02 after every jam I read, I finally
    accumulated about a buck twenty, so here it comes:
            I agree with whoever said it earlier, that I would buy a DT album, no
    matter what it sounded like. I just know it would grow on me. I was one
    of those who heard the TAMP sample from scream.no and thought they were
    kidding. But, I dubbed it down to a cassette, shoved it into my walkman
    and played it for a few days, and I see the merit of it now. The same with
    some other .ra samples I've gotten. Maybe it's LaBrie's voice that I've
    just gotten attached to.
            I'm not going to comment on the deteriorating lyrics, 'cuz (this is where
    most people attack me) I find lyrics to be a secondary element to a song
    and I rarely get around to paying attention to them (at least with a band
    who plays music comlex enough to _really_ listen to, such as DT). Only
    things like ska really revolve around them (yep - chalk up one more rude
    jammer :-). It takes a powerful lyricist like Sting or Joni Mitchell to
    grab my attention. Lyrics just aren't DT's main assett.
            My biggest thought about DT's change of sound over the years is that they
    aren't exploiting the studio as much as they used to. Things sound more
    live and raw. I've found that this shows that a band isn't regarding music
    as as much of constructive art anymore, but as more of a bandwidth for
    personal statement. I&W was just thicker and more thought out that ACOS
    and what I've heard of FII. It IMO, they've shifted the focus from
    intricacy (sp?) to expressiveness. Not a good thing or a bad thing, just a
    thing, really.
            Finally, one last comment about the keyboards. When I first heard I&W (my
    first DT album - I was turned onto it by the son of a guy that went to High
    School with Mike Portnoy) the thing that struck me was the keyboards. They
    sounded like a guitar - but not the sound - the way Kevin played 'em. If
    he had been using a good guitar patch, I would have thought it _was_ a
    guitar. That's something Derrick just can't (or at least doesn't) do.
            Just to sum up, buy any DT you can, 'cuz if you like one, you'll come to
    like 'em all. We need to stress tolerance in the music world. BTW, I
    think Awake was their best album, by leaps and bounds.

    Bootlegs are always expensive and if it weren't for trades, I wouldn't
    have know many interesting versions of some of my preferred songs (the
    acoustic version of "Wait for Sleep", the Dream Theater "Tears" cover of
    Rush -- I know about the Christmas CD, but I'm talking about the
    other version floating around -- etc.).

            Well, I guess that this "Rogerio" is me. :-) Well, I may re-start
    the DT bootleg discography, no problems... Let's see what happens (I won't
    have time to start this project until the end of this month, I think but
    I'll do my best).

    Itchy was exploring the supposed strangeness of signing off from the jam because the new cd was coming out. I don't think this is really too odd. I can see where people wouldn't want to read review after review after review - basically consisting of two extremes: it sucks or it rules. I am already sick of reading track-by-track analysis. A nice, well-constructed review is one thing, but it seems the majority of the posts are not constructed with such care. One must remember that there are many people subsribed to this list not for Dream Theater news, but for a window into the world of progressive, sometimes heavy, complex music. A world in which DT is a leading citizen - but not the only one. I have the time to selectively read the jam, so I have no need to unsubscribe, but I can see where people with more demands upon their time might take a nice sabbatical from the rigors of everyday jam life.

    I totally disagree. I think the band uses the sudio almost as another instrument. Its a progression I've noticed from each album. On a lot of FII tracks you hear a lot of effects. Listen to Burning My Soul. It's pretty straight forward for DT, but listen to the production. KJLB's voice sounds very chorused and shimmery. There's also electronic voice samples during the intro and chorus.

    In other songs, there's some very dense Floydian sections that just sound very trippy and laid-back. Listen to the beginning of Hell's Kitchen. The music makes you feel almost drowsy (A real good band can pull you into that mode every once in a while.) and there are some really fitting samples underneath. (at least that's what I thought I heard.) The guys (and I really noticed this on Awake) are, as Mike Portnoy said "Stretching the boundries of instrumentation" and I noticed that on several FII tracks. So, with all the effects, samples and Instruments such as the 7-string and Chapman Stick (plus we're getting Rhodes and Mellotron- far out!), I think FII will (for the most part) be a real studio-oriented album.

    I just wanted to verify how easy it is to go from Floyd to Dream Theater. I have been a big Floyd fan for quite some time now...longer than I can remember. I remember that at a party, a drummer who I knew, who liked Rush and all those other progressive favorites, told me if I liked Floyd, I'd love this new band, called Dream Theater. I even got to hear a sample of Metropolis...I liked it, but I went out and bought Awake. I have been a fan of Dream Theater ever since!

    Mike, As for being in Pa, I can fortunately say that most shows do come to Ohio, so I don't have to worry about missing too many! I am hoping that John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy keep their promise they made to us at the climics that they'd be in Cleveland this time as well as Columbus.And in case you haven't heard, there are many rumors that Pink Floyd will be touring again as well with a new album this year, so it may turn out to be a very great year indeed! You can always come to Ohio to see a show if you don't live too far away, most of the venues here are pretty nice!

Notice how it sounds exactly the same everytime it hits? And for me, that goes for the rest of the album. The production is not dynamic enough. As awesome as those songs are, you can appreciate them a lot better when you hear them live.

    On the contrary, I find they're experimenting a lot more with sounds. Just the beginning of ANM show such a variety of sounds all over the place.

    Well speaking as a guitarist, i find Derek's playing a lot more guitar like. (Didn't MP say one of his main influences was Randy Rhoades?) Not only his phrasing, but also the agression.     Yeah, I have a dss and get the stations. "Music choice" runs from channels 501 - 531 and the music they play totally ranges from Classical music to Jazz to metal to oldies. It is real cool and I always have channel 512 tuned in which is the Metal station. The other day I heard The Mirror on the station. :)

    The reason Awake is guitar dominated is because KM did not put too much effort into the recording. He knew he was going to move on after Awake, so how could anyone expect him to put his mind into Awake? Kevin Moore is the reason Awake is so heavy.

    This evening I MP3 encoded John Petrucci's Purple Rain cover from his 8/18/97 guitar clinic in Orlando, FL.

    This is an incredible instrumental rendition of Prince's Purple Rain. I feel that it does a great job of showing just how emotional JP can really play, not to mention all of the varied styles that he can play fluently. The song has been digitized @ 44kHz from a video tape so generously provided by Dane (Daus Studenberg) down in Florida. I'm not sure what format the original footage was shot on, but the VHS tape dub that I got is mono, but with good audio quality and minimal crowd chatter. The MP3 that I've created was recorded direct from my Hi-Fi VCR (like it matters) to my computer via a SB32PnP. The song is 8:52 long, so the fact that it was mono kind of worked to its advantage. The total MP3 size is 4.2meg.

    My question is, could one of you true DT fans who run either a DT or prog-rock page put this up for more fans to enjoy? I'd email it to people individually, but it would make a lot more sense to have it available as a download.

    Well, I think it was my post that started the anti-Sony bit, so I'll mention that my flakey CD boombox (that doesn't play discs with circular scratches on them) has had a rough life. I put myself thru college working at a grocery store, and the boombox followed me there for stock night. It's been kicked, dropped, rammed with half-ton pallets of groceries... I'm surprised it plays anything. :)

    On the other hand, when I bought my stereo I auditioned some nice sony stuff against some similarily-priced Onkyo stuff. Onkyo put DT in the room with me. Sony put them across the street. :(

    I propose one point each for classic Rush (I won't start a flame war defining "classic Rush"; just pick some album between 2112 and Roll The Bones as a starting point) album, or pre-Empire Queensryche albums.

    I futher propose one point for a clued-in sales clerk, and minus one for the terminally un-clued. Case in point: I tried to special-order a copy of Marillion's at-the-time-new album, "Made Again," since I didn't think Musicland in Grand Forks would be getting a copy for the shelves. I was told by the clerk that they would be getting a large number of the band's new one in (color me shocked!), but that I had the title wrong (what?)... "it's called 'Smells Like Children.'" Augh!

    There are basically four "versions" of King Crimson. The first is the "psychedelic-influenced prog", from '69 to '72 or '73... "In The Court of the Crimson King" is the best album of the era. Second is the "Balls-and-chunk guitar prog", from '73 or so to around '80. "Red" is the album to get. Third is the "pop-influenced prog", typified by the album "Discipline", and streching from '80 to just before the current album. The fourth is the "double trio" that made the current album "Thrak". It kinda defies classification. "Industrial- and-Beatles-influenced Thrash jazz" maybe?

    There's a number of box-set/greatest-hit sort of things out there; the best single-disc intro to KC is "The Concise King Crimson". It's the only one that treats the first three eras equally well. Get it if you want to try out all three eras if you're on a budget; if your not, get the three albums mentioned above, or try a boxed set.
