People are unsubscribing, because there's a new Dream Theater album
about to be released... On any other mailinglist, that would be THE
reason to get ON the list... Doesn't that tell you guys something ?
Btw, I'm also thinking of getting off the list, until things settle
down a bit... I am sure I'll enjoy FII a LOT more *without* all the
      bitchin' :-)

I just read my last post to the 'jam (the one concerning the
changes between Images and Words and Awake) and I'd like to say that I
apologize for the number of misspellings/grammatical errors. Well, I was
rushing to try to post that the fastest I could and it ended up having
many (indeed, far many) more errors than I thought... :-(

I think that I'll start using a spell checker... :-)

King Crimson has so many line-up changes through-out the years, they make Yes look like a happy family. The only constant member is Robert Fripp who reforms the band everytime there's 'King Crimson music' to be played. Every period of the band is very different. I personally don't like 'In the Court of the Crimson King' myself. But i love the 'Red' era (Frip, Bill Bruford, John Wetton, and David Cross??) Pick up 'Larks Tongue in Aspic' if you ever find it. I listen to that and can't believe it was written in the 70's. The current KC is also very good. The album 'Thrak' is just amazing. The 80's Crimson is a little more3 pop-like; it's growing on me.

Well I have posted 3/4 times about the fan club, if you want I'll forward you my origonal messages to you ? So why didn't you just read the inside page (2) of the fanzine, all the info is their ? Obvisiously you suffer from selective reading ? I am still laughing at your response, BTW, if you want to continue this 'argument' please direct your 'constructive critisism' to me and not the jam. Sorry next time I'll hit the <sarcasm> button before I hit send.

Why couldn't you just answer like that in the first place instead of coming off like an asshole? In the first post you said something like "How many times do I have to tell you?". To be honest, I've never seen that topic come up before - at least in the past few months.

Okay I was outta line with my post yesterday about the fan club, I was however, being very sarcastic, that of course didn't come across at all. I have posted a number of times about it and if you are a fan club member all you need to know is in the fanzine on page 2 ! Do yourself and the jam a favour, read it, please ! Good job I am such a placid natured guy and that I can laugh off such things as Jason's finger, I don't like causing trouble on this list, it is a damn good list to be on most of the time. Their are some terrific ppl on the jam, Doc, Spine, Gabbo, D-Man, Itchy, Chalkface and many more, shame the assholes spoil it for the rest of us sometimes. Sorry for any offence that I may have caused...

That's interesting - it would be cool if this was the UK release date, despite what has been said so far. I still can't believe they wouldn't bother releasing it over here, and 22nd is a Monday so it's quite possible...

I read someone's post about how good the production on Images and Words is (you can hear every instrument equally all the time). There is no question that Images and Words is one of the best albums (rock, metal, classical, jazz, showtunes, traditional, folk, whatever) ever recorded.

As such, I was pleased to find that Image and Words' producer, David Prater, had also worked on the Firehouse album, Hold Your Fire. Several friends of mine and myself were going to see Firehouse at Club Bene here in New Jersey. To that end, I listened to the Hold Your Fire all week so that I'd know the music.

After the show, we waited to meet the band (the girl I was with wanted pictures and autographs). I'd also like to say that I really enjoyed the show. They're a great rock band with a great sound and very catchy, hook-filled songs.

After the whole "I'm a big fan and enjoyed the show" shpiel, I asked what I really wanted to know: "What was it like working with David Prater?" I was quite amused by the response, which I think came from Firehouse's guitarist. I'll use quote marks here, but I assure you that I'm paraphrasing what I remember him saying, and not by any stretch of the imagination quoting what he said word for word:

"Oh! That guy! (sighs heavily) Well, we didn't work with him on the most recent album. We did Hold Your Fire with him. He's got one formula for production and no one can deviate from it. He gets very frustrated when it doesn't sound right. Once he smashed a guitar over the mixing console out of anger. There was no way we were going to work with him again. I know Dream Theater worked with him on one of their albums, and they wouldn't work with him again."

Then, my friend and I asked the bass player:

"David Prater? Big guy. Like six and a half feet tall. Used to play in a band in the seventies... He was an asshole! He'd get real pissed off...was impossible to work with. He kicked his dog! (retrospectively, and more calmly:) Ah... I sent him a card at the holidays... (quoting himself, with a tone of bitterness:) 'Merry Christmas... ...faggot!'"

For the record, all the guys in Firehouse heavily praised his production work. And for good reason. Any production work I've heard by him has been stellar. I guess all the great arts masters had some personality flaw...And believe me, I'm so impressed with this guy's work that I will gladly put him the catagory with Ludwig van Beethoven (who was a mental case who spent his existence tormenting his sister and nephew), Van Gogh (who was a nut for obvious reasons), and Isaac Newton (who was a miserable wretch who when he wasn't working on the principia, the theory of light, the theory of gravitation, or inventing the calculus was passing death sentences on people and having them hanged.) I guess we should just be happy that David Prater kicked his dog instead of cutting off his ear.

Well, I don't know what your software calls preview, but if it is a MIME attachment, then you should always save it before you try to do anything with it.

And, of course, avoid getting binaries from promiscuous/uncertain sources. :-) And for those of you with M$-DOG or Windows, always use an anti-virus just for safety. And those running Linux shouldn't run anything as root. But I think that you already knew that. :-)

Greetings! my favourite group for the last 10 years or so (which, oddly, was when I started really getting into music) has been Pink Floyd. But, it is because I liked Pink Floyd that I got into Dream Theater..

It went like this: Back in 1991, when Floyd was taking a seven year break from music, I started searching for other "floydian' groups. I was on a Floud mailing list, and we started discussing other groups. It was there that I was introduced to Marillion (My first Marillion album was 'Bsides', primarilly for 'Grendel' (what an awesome song!)). I also started my journey into the mighty Queensryche. I dove headlong into Empire and Mindcrime, and eventually owned all their albums...

then I heard about a new, queensrycheish group: DT. I got Images and Words. Listened to it. Struck me as cheesey 80's stuff at first. Put it away for a few weeks. Dug it out. Gave it another try. WOW!! It was SO COLOURFUL!!! I fell in love with DT ever since. Unfortunately, being stuck in Alterno-Hell of Pennsylvania, Ive never got to a concert =(.

Sorry,, needed to get that offmy chest.. it is easy to go from Floyd to DT.

About Alternoshit music.. dont knock music because of the lack of complexity. I personally have been a HUGE Pearl Jam fan. Although they might not have the amazing technical wizardry of DT, the emotion they poured out at their concerts blew me away.. music does not have to be complex to be good.. it just has to hit an emotion...

I must also thank the jam .. I have been worried and depressed about the RECENT state of music.. where are the "Wall"s, the "Operation Mindcrime"s, the "Misplaced Childhood" of the late 90's? But I found out that great music has not died, it just now lies burried in the underground. Got "A pleasant shade of grey" and I now rest assured that terrific albums are still made. Thanks for introducing me to awesome music!
