I know exactly what you mean. I was obsessed with DT long before I
realized how talented they had to be to pull off some of the stuff they
did. Does anyone else feel the same sense that time has no meaning when
listening to DT? I can listen to ACOS or WFS and barely notice the
difference in time. All right, that's an extreme example, but I first
got I&W on cassete. The times are not listed for the individual song on
the tape. I didn't realize how long the songs were till I got the CD a
year and a half later. I seriously didn't even notice the 9 minute
difference between WFS and LTL. I just sort of space out when I listen
to DT, I guess. And what is also strange is that even today, after
hundreds of listens to each album, I hear something new everytime.

    Hello there in the jam!!!!
Although this message is not connected with DT in any way, but still....
Anyway, those who are interested only in DT can simply skip it......
Yesterday I was to the Zildjian day over here, actually the first part of
the show was not very interesting - there were local drummers, who were
very good, but comparing to what was later, they were simply poor.
But, when Dennis came out to the stage and started playing - wow!!!!! To be
honest, never before I heard a drum player playing alone for that long, he
played for more than 30 minutes without having a second break.
He is unbeliviebly fast - the things played using only ONE bass drum were
that fast that everybody thought that he must probably using the double
bass, but he really played it with only one bdrum and one pedal.
I am not discussing his hands technique here, cause there are no words I
can say about it, only - that is really fast, and unlike many fast drummers
he doesn't use the snare only, but he plays all over the kit, and that is a
    thing to look at.
Hey!!! If there is a Zildjian day in the city where you live - go and see
    it!!! That is a must!
    Ok, that's all for now..
Please, if anybody knows any records where Dennis plays, please, email me.

hmmm...tough choice...if i _had_ to pin it down to just one album, it
would probably be "Hold Your Fire" (although "Grace Under Pressure" is a
_very_ close second and "Power Windows" is slightly behind at third...)

Yes. Bruce and co. are supporting Lynrd Skynrd on their upcoming UK
tour . . . is it worth paying 17 pounds for 45 minutes of Bruce and Adrian?
I think so. During the interval, I will probably leave the concert and go
to the pub, with no intention of returning for the Skynrd set.

Only four weeks until Falling Into Infinity is released. Whoopy Doo.

    Sure...

Both "Images & Words" and "Awake" covers have references to the songs or objects from the songs.

    Images and Words:

    - the sparrow falling; - the bed; - the portrait frame the little girl is holding; - the moon...

Well, I'm not with the CD right here at the University, but I think that I could find more.

    Awake:

    - six o'clock :-); - the mirror; - the silent man; - the web; - some planets (as a reference to space-dye vest, I think); - some shadows, if I'm not mistaken.

Again, I'm sure I've not listed all the things and I'm sure that other people will complete my list...

Having seen just one time the new cover, I think that it matches at least elements from two songs: "Hollow Years" and "Lines in the Sand", but I'll tell you more when I get my own copy of "Falling into Infinity". :-)

    See ya, Roger...

Nope, not BMS this time...TWO DT songs in two days! Last night, on WGIR = NH, I heard the very end of YNM, which was pretty damn cool, from what I = heard...then, this afternoon, at 1:00 on WAAF Boston, they were playing = the "Lost Song" thing where they bring back a song that used to be = played a lot, and whoever gets it wins two tickets to WCW Monday Nitro. = SO ANYWAY, I thought, no way, they're never going to play DT...then, = there it was, PMU, on WAAF! I never thought that they would play = something cool ever again. After an incorrect guess of "Whitesnake," = Mike Hewitt from NH got it...so Mike, if you're on the 'jam, enjoy WCW = action!

Sorry to quote the whole thing, but I think what Matt says is worth reading. In addition I think many of us get to caught up in critiquing the music we listen to with our predisposed opinions, rather than just listening to the band and giving them the freedom to produce what is right for them. Dream Theater doesn't have to write songs just for us, they should write what *they* want to play. It sure is nice of them to share it with us though ;) Too often people like us tend to confine our taste in a bands style and then panic when that band shows any sign of change, and you know what happens then...

This is a surefire way to start an argument, but what the heck....

I personally feel (and I think a lot of Rush fans would agree) that Hold Your Fire and Moving Pictures are their two best albums. If you prefer a more electronic sound with lots of keyboards, go for HYF. If you prefer a more guitar-oriented sound, go with MP. If you have lots of money, buy them both and see which you like better :).

Something else you might want to consider is buying Chronicles, which is a two-CD set featuring songs from all of their albums (except the last three, which are newer). It doesn't show off the "progressive" side of Rush as well as I would like, but it's a good way to get an idea of what their different albums sound like.

    Hope this helps....

Hey, I would just say go out and buy "Chronicles", which is their 2-CD "Best of" of sorts. That way, you can see which types of songs you like the best, what album they're from, and then go on from there.......

Wow....this is VERY R&B-ish, but this album kicks my ass beyond belief in some sort of way. The is very cool and mellow, the musicianship is good and grooves very nicely. But above all, this CD exudes sex like craazy. Move over, Barry White. The whole time I listened to this CD, all that was thought about was sex. Definitely a CD to have sex to. man, oh man. I don't know if it was the CD or maybe cuz I might be hard-up (as a typical male), but I'm pretty sure the CD had a lot to do with it......

    Hey,

Has anyone here ever heard of a guitarist named Richard Johnson? I saw him in clinic at "Morrell Music" in my home town. His speciality is an extremely unique "percussive guitar technique". Not that he just bangs on his guitar. He does do some of that, but it's mostly actual playing, although in a really weird way. He claims to not know the names of any of the chords and to never have his guitar actually in tune. Anyway, he did some really amazing things on 6 and 12 string Taylor, hand-made, $12000, acoustic guitars, for he hates electric. He had a few releases on tape and CD. Using a soundboard, some employees of the shop filmed it with (I think) two cameras. I'll try to get a hold of copy.

If any YtseJammer can give me more info on this guy, please email me privately.

There's a whole new sentence on the DT page:

"With their new album Falling Into Infinity, the hailed standard-bearers of progressive hard rock Dream Theater, once again show they are in top form. Check out their first single Burning My Soul. (Soming Soon)

... and then there's the same old stuff that's been there since ACoS.

    FII tonight! Yeah!!

This one is for all the people that were bitching about how the cover artwork doesn't contain song titles...

New Millennium [note the double n, lots of people (including me) tend to misspell it...]

The sea symbolizes infinity, and the flow of time is infinite. Millennium is a period of time.

    You Not Me

The two people sitting there, are gazing at each other. From each person's point he's seeing you (the other person) not me (himself).

    Peruvian Skies

err...you can see the sky in the picture.

    Hollow Years

Years symbolize the theme of time, like in NM. Hollow might be the space which is unseen through the binoculars.

    Burning my Soul

Burning, as in using fire, which is opposite to the water that stop the fire. Also, fire is timed, unlike the sea which is infinite. The human soul, or spirit, might be considered timeless.

    Hell's Kitchen

Hell is supposedly timeless, like the infinite sea.

    Lines in the Sand

Sand -> beach -> sea. There is a very distinct line separating the sea and the sky.

    Take Away My Pain

Sometimes, for the pain to disappear, or to at least wane, a person might want to go to a deserted island (yes, in the infinite sea).

    Just Let Me Breathe

If you're drowning in the sea, you will need to breathe. Also, if you are flying very high in the sky, you might experience the feeling of lack of air.

    Anna Lee

Two proper nouns...you don't really expect me to find this in the picture, right?

On a second thought, anna is some kind of a coin and lee means a shelter from winds. A coin is the shape of the lens in the binoculars (a major theme in the art work) and the particular place at sea that is shown in the picture is some kind of a lee since there's apparently no wind at all...

    Trial of Tears

Tears -> water -> sea. Sea of tears?

    I - It's raining

..and what fills the infinite sea, but the infinite cycle of nature?

    II - Deep in Heaven

Deep usually refers to the sea. The sky in the picture give a somewhat "heavenly" feeling.

    III - The Wasteland

The wasteland is opposite to the sea.

This presentation was to show you all how you can find secret meanings where you didn't expect to find them...
