    Ahoy,

This post has no real topic... I am just here to gloat. My Seven Wonders
CD is here, and it is excellent! Thank you to Ryan Whitaker for the CD
production and to Mike Bahr for his previous bootleg releases. Also, my
check to Knights of the Round
www.knightsoftheround.com has been sent for The Quiet Room's debut CD (go
and check it out in RealAudio!), and I will momentarily be walking out the
door to go and get Falling Into Infinity! (note the lack of abbreviation,
I've waited too long to abbreviate) And maybe if I'm feeling ambitious I'll
go buy Warlords III:Reign of Heroes too. Damn, this is what it's about.

I must say that I am fortunate to have been able to wait until today to pick
up the disk today. I was getting really jealous watching everyone posting
about FII. So I faithfully read all the opinions. I was starting to get a
little worried from all the negativity about the songs. I'm not ready to
give it a rating yet, but I will say this. There's a lot of shit going on in
this album. This album IS GREAT, but so are all the other DT albums. The
degree of greatness remains to be seen. It will probably require another
month of listening before I know how deep this album really goes. It has
definitely made a nice first impression. Lines in the Sand is about as
progressive as any song I've heard them do, and is probably my early
favorite. Am I the only "cheeze ball" who likes Anna Lee? It's not SDV, but
it's a nice song. I must say that Myung has definitely made his presence
known to the bass world. I like the production. Some very interesting Vocal
work which is something I didn't expect. I really hope this band makes in
the mainstream. The boys did good. I have a semi-hard-on as I'm sitting
hear feeling the bass vibrations for a second time. My prediction "This jam
will turn into the "NegaJam." I know that I am not at all dissapointed. Ah

    OK, here goes...

ANM - Cool tune - love the freaked - out intro. Wish the guitar sound
had more guts, but the Stick playing is cool. Drum sound is OK, the vox
are a bit loud. Cool lyrics...

YNM - Does anyone know how to scratch a song off of a CD? Horrid
production - thin and too dry. Portnoy's wild drumming is the major
    saving grace.

"Peruvian Skies" - Beautiful. From the Floyd - esque beginning through
the powerful end, my fav track so far.

That's the first three. I actually think Shirley did a good job with
"Peruvian...". YNM, on the other hand, makes me dislike it more every
time I hear it. I keep expecting JP to break into "Shaft" !

    AMEN CHRIS!!!

Hey!! For all you jammers in the upstate New York area!!!

My friend has his own college radio show (and he's not even in college)
at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. HE PLAYS DREAM THEATER
EVERY SHOW, and played a shitload of stuff off of FII last night.

    TUNE IN:
His show is every Monday from 8-10PM
    His "handle" is "80-PROOF"
    His name is Joe Hanna
Station: 91.1 WSPN - Skidmore College

It's not your average college radio show, and its a very popular
    station up there.

So if you're up there, listen to the show and give him a call, and
say FUCK YEAH! Tell him you heard about him on the Ytsejam and he'll
freak out!! He'll play any of your requests as long as its at least
as new as the 80's and has a heavy edge to it.

He doesn't own a computer, but I tell him about the 'Jam
all the time...he really wants to join us soon, but most importantly
he is a recent DT convert and is now a TOTAL DT FREAK like me :)

    Just had to tell ya's......

The new vanden plas album is more mature in comparison with colour temple,
the music is more progressive and more heavier, the lyrics are much more
interesting and about the feeling listen to it, it's such like a sweet
dream with some nightmares reborns *What Hell Is This*. This album is all
in ambiance just like Nightime birds from the gathering in an another
style, it's a whole story where each chapter brings you to nirvana.
Definitly, the best album of the year *IMPO*. I can't wait listen this
stuff live. My favourite Song: Rainmaker.
Vanden Plas has now find their own style, and I'm sure that most of DT fans
will appreciate their work, specially 'cause this "Chef d'Oeuvre" is not
    accessible in first step.

    Just try it !

What? For me Annie Haslam is the best female singer that I've already
listened. Try live version of "Ashes are Burning". There is a great
bass solo and at the end, Haslam's voice was incredible!!! I hope
that you change your opinion someday :)))

I believe that when bands release around 3 albums or more , tour setlists can't satisfy everyone because people will always feel that the concert was great but some songs were missing. To try and avoid this as much as possible in the upcoming DT tour I suggest doing what many bands have done for their tours. We should set up a homepage with a list of every DT song and make a poll of the songs that most people would want to hear live. This would give the chance so that everybody can make like their "ideal" 2 hour setlist and the songs that have more votes could be the ones in the tour. I know that we are in no position to determine what songs to be played in a tour but I'm sure that the band will appreciate knowing our opinion and from there they can develop their own setlist if they don't approve totally ours. I don't have the knowledge to do this in HTML so I hope that jammers get interested in this idea and that we can develop. Let's see what everybody thinks!

Wonder why? hmmmmmm > Maybe that is what DT fans believe to be the best album (probably due to a lot of keyboards) but if you go into alt.music.rush you will most likely get Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, or Power Windows. I've been lurking around the NMS and the newsgroup for a while now and every time someone asks that question those three come up a lot. As for myself (and rush IS my favorite band) I have always been extremely fond of A Farewell To Kings. Hold Your Fire is the best keyboard period album and also one of my favorites but if you like powerfull guitar over keyboards then you might want to go for one of the pre-Signals albums - Mainly AFTK, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures. In any case you can't buy a bad album cause there aren't any!

Hot damn! What a treat! Alrighty. Here goes my official FII review- not to be confused with the other six trillion FII reviews:

I obsessively waited in the parking lot for the record store owner to arrive. When he did, I ran my ass into the store and demanded three copies (for my friend, girlfriend and myself), payed for them and split.

I arrived home at 10:20 AM and got the headphones on. I noticed the clock turned to 10:21. I was ready...

    "New Millennium"

Experimental. Progressive Groovy. Trippy. Heavy. Perfect. No complaints here.

    "You Not Me"

Mike pulls you in and then Petrucci revs things up with a wah-ified groove. Keeps groovin'...and groovin'... then the chorus (hmmm. What's up?)...groove...groove...groove...hmmm?...groovy solo from JP...hmmm?...groove.

    "Peruvian Skies"

An acoustic guitar doubles the electric. Pretty soulful, but not quite as moody as the Fix For '96 versions. The harmonies could (should) have been a little higher in the mix IMO. Other than that I have no complaints about this one. I love it when the heavy part slams you in the face.

    "Hollow Years"

Really catchy and melodic. I do hear the Sting influence. The productuion on this one sounds a little dry, but I like this one nevertheless.

    "Burning My Soul"

Crunch time. This is one heavy tune. When I first heard it last December, I couldn't stop bouncing up and down to it and it still has that effect on me. I do think that these are the worst lyrics ever on a DT album though, but I can get over it.

    "Hell's Kitchen"

Trippy. I love the way this builds. The climax of this song is better than sex! :) It calms down a little bit and fades into...

    "Lines In The Sand"

O.K. Simply put, this KICKS THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF ANY SONG I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!!! It is a huge improvement of the Fix versions. (which I previously thought could not be done.) At the begining of his solo, JP plays this HIP Jazz run that just gives me the chills. Doug Pinnick's vocals are perfect. The fusion section in the middle is SO GOOD! I could go on and on about this song. It is really THAT good!

    Part Two coming up next...

Let me take that back; >it's obviously not difficult at all. I realize you aren't saying that - >you are just bashing the *ignorant* jammers who dislike it!

Argh! It's always my friends who I get in these types of arguments with. Kevin, you assume much with my assertion. What I'm trying to say, is that if you don't agree with me, that you're ignorant, and wrong. :) No... just kidding. First, like and dislike have nothing to do with what I stated about DT and grunge. If you like or dislike the album, that's fine. I don't see where I state that ignorance is a matter of likes and dislikes, but if it does read that way, I will be happy to reconsider my wording. If, after listening to the album, you dislike it, then you've formed an opinion (though that opinion, I expect, is subject to a great deal of change over the next few months and even the next year or so). Whether that opinion is of any use or value to me remains to be seen, as I explain below. I'm sorry to have to spam the list with this sort of simple logic. I inferred ignorance from two very typical views that I see on this list. Not everyone is guilty of this ignorance, but then, I didn't call everyone ignorant. It is your own choice to agree with me or disagree with me. I contend that 1). people who dislike the new Dream Theater because they're not showing off the polyrhythms, complex patterns, shred licks, or "balls n' chunk" in every song are ignoring the fact that Dream Theater is progressive and continues to grow and CHANGE. Likewise, this album would expectedly NOT be like Images and Words, or like Awake, BECAUSE of this progressiveness. 2). People who disqualify all slow music as "grunge" or "bad" are ignoring a great deal of both beautiful and technical music, solely because of the tempo, and regardless of the possibility that there could be 64th notes spewing here and there.

    >Aha! I guess >the only thing I can really take umbrage with would be the part about people >on the list not caring. Each side of a given debate should have its opinion >voiced - be it distasteful or not. So, all you who hate the new one, or will >hate the new one, be you ignorant or not, *I* am listening. Like everyone >else on the list cares what I say about that kind of thing...

Again, you assume that my statement would preclude one side of an argument, by virtue of my own tastes. I didn't state that either. When I said "everyone on the list cares what they say about that kind of thing" I was implying that after one or two listens, your (referring to anyone's) opinion about how crappy, simple, grungy, good, or heinous Falling Into Infinity is, can have little value to anyone with an open mind. You simply can't digest even the most simplistic pieces of music fully after only one or two listens. With music as complex as a full rock band's music, it's going to take a lot longer. That having been said, I will yield to you that my opinion, after one listen, should I decide to share it with the jam, is equally useless, and of little merit, even, and perhaps especially if I say "It RULES!" Before anyone can make a realistic and worthwhile evaluation of a piece of music, he or she must first UNDERSTAND that piece of music. Thus, if you buy the album, listen to it while you're driving home, get halfway through it, and want to come here and tell me it's shit, I want you to understand that I _DON'T CARE_ about what you have to say. If I don't care about the opinion offered, in light of it's under informed origin, then it's false to state that everyone cares about the opinion, right? If you dislike the album after the first half of a listen, that too is still fine and dandy. But you are not possessed of an open mind if you make that blanket statement after only hearing the album a few times (or halfway through, once), and not giving it a chance because of it's apparent lack of technique, speed, aggression, or complexity. I don't care about the opinions of anyone who approaches a new album and isn't willing to give it an open minded fair shot.

Thanks to those of you who complimented me on my post, though it was hardly deserving, and thanks to any of you who are giving me reasonable counter-arguments. Makes my day a lil more fun.

Tidbit o' the day: Up to and including his performance on Poison's _Flesh and Blood_, shredder Richie Kotzen insisted on recording all of his guitar parts while completely naked. No word on whether his subsequent releases were recorded in this manner. Kinda nasty, huh?
