    My friends...

Just got through FII.... I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP!!!! 8-D

Much happiness in the household... I fookin' LOVE this album! So much more
mature! So much more emotional! So much... better? Hmmm... that's a tough
one. I will say this, however - I must rank it on an equal with I&W and
Awake. This baby's THAT good... at least IMHO. ;-) By the way, I did my
part to help pay the bills for the guys... I bought the CD AND the tape.
(Gotta have something for the car, you know!)

'Nuff said, 'cause everyone's a critic, and I don't wanna waste too much
space. I just wanted to say my piece. Keep rocking!

    - Matt T.

    P.S.:

    > Happy 'Jam #3000 - A New Millenium of Ytsejams!!! (and a damn good tune, as
    > well).

Damn.... I was gonna post something like this! Ya beat me to it! :-)

NP: 3 guesses, and the first 2 don't count... ;-D

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids.

3000 ytsejams, with no end in sight....

So I walk into the nearest Blockbuster Music after work, grab the 1 copy of
FII they have in the racks, and take it up front. I hand it to the girl
saying, "I didn't think you guys would have any copies of this." She smiles
and says, "Yeah, we got a few in."

While she's ringing it up, she asks me, "You a really big Dream Theater
fan?" I nod frantically with a big grin and she says, "Do you have any of
their bootlegs?" I nod again and we start chatting. I find out she's a big
DT fan as well. We discuss our mutual hatred of the local AOR-oriented
radio stations, and I direct her to Mike Bahr's site so she can get hold of
some DT bootlegs, and start to leave -- when she asks me to wait a second,
and asks if I'm doing anything that night!

She must have misread my raised eyebrows, because she grinned sheepishly
and said, "Nobody I know likes DT, it'd be nice to talk to somebody who
appreciates good music." So we make a date for later that evening.

I'm listening to FII now, smirking, loving the music, and generally
    enjoying being a prog fan.

Oh yeah, my thoughts on the disc: Pretty good so far. I *like* Peruvian
Skies (that's as far as I've gotten right now).

    Cheers,
    Phil

i done gone and wrote a review for the school paper.....which i mentioned
last week on this here forum......

and today, I just become a published critic, fancy that......

so, it ain't a huge paper (Wayne State University's The South End)
but, it's a safe bet to say this is one of the first reviews of FII to
appear in print, and esp. in the college media.....

and those of you who favored me by reading it last week (thanks!, btw) can
attest that it's a good review, if not particularly professional (hey,
    it's my first one.....)

the paper's web site is down, but if anyone who ain't read it cares to
www.umich.edu/~ahtrap/fii_review has a very close to final draft.....the
editor dude put what i wrote into the paper uncut in any way......

unfortunately, he also chose to throw in two more music reviews todays,
leaving no room to print the cover picture......

So, is the new producer into grunge?

The first 2 songs don't even sound like DT. You, Not Me: Who is this
band? Sounds like Sound Theater, or Dream Jam. Total grunge sound with
not much clarity, even more so than HitNF by Queensryche. I think that
CD had much more clarity. Bass and guitar is turned way up (on the low
end), with everyone else turned down. Portnoy's not doing much of
    anything so far. Shit!
It almost sounded like another vocalist. Very strange indeed, this
    alternative approach.

Look a little closer. It says "Lyrics written by John Petrucci and
    Desmond Child."

If your gonna say something at least get it right. this is not a
flame just pointing out fact. anyway who cares if he is used to write
a "hit song" that would mean more exposure and more mony for these
guys which they very well deserve.

the reason this is , was that they recorded the songs individually and
not each individual track per instrument individually. I like it as
it provides a change in mood, feel , and sound from song to song. And
ohh god, YNM is an excellent song all around. don't knock it cause DC

Well, I haven't heard the MC tributes, so maybe her voice has gone
downhill (She must be close to/in he 40's by now?) Her stuff with
Renaissance is bliss. Kinda folky, but perfectly controlled and pure,
and she has a better range than Mariah Carey (i.e. she can actually sing
at the top end, rather than just make orgasm noises.)

On a related note, I picked up FII after work today (big surpise.) I
thought I'd plan music for the trip; so my car CD player had Renaissance's
'Prologue' playing. Track? "Bound for Infinity." :)

Or do the Cauliflower's growing in you ears need to be picked ? There is NO grunge on FII, if you think it does, seek urgent medical attention. :)

    To clear up your point....

The "lyrics" were written by JP and DC (stated at the end of the lyrics), but the "song" was written by DT and DC (stated in the last part of the liner). So the original poster was correct.

All sneers and gripes aside about whether they "sold out" or not (I don't believe so), I _do_ know that I have a few friends I want to have listen to this, because they may be more "into" this album. Some people I know don't even give the other albums a chance. So if DT can draw more people by having a "hit song", than the more power to them. Trying to make a song more radio friendly so you can continue to do what you love and get more people aware of you isn't necessarily a bad thing. Where I draw the line is when a band focuses their entire efforts on what the public wants (radio songs) and not what they want, and I don't believe in a second that this is what FII is. Dream Theater is a diverse band with diverse talents, emotions, and ideas. I fully hope the next album will be as different from FII as FII is from Awake. I want to see (hear) what DT is capable of and not see them forced into any one style.

Unrelated: As for NM, if I had only heard the first 30 seconds, I would swear I was listening to RUSH.

Well Jason you have already proved to all of us in recent weeks that you can't read the DTIFC fanzine and that you take no notice of the almost daily post's about the 'Seven Wonders' disc and now the the egg is really gonna be sticking ot your your face with your most recent words of wisdom on FII.

    >Just picked up FII 2 hours ago at midnight. (Saw maybe 1 or 2 >other buyers?) It's a little too earlier to post much of a music >review (Hollow Years jumps out as being very non-DT yet VERY cool!!) but >I just have to comment on the sound quality, or the LACK of sound quality.

So how many times have you listened to it once or twice ? Get yourself a decent system to listen to it . Hollow Years, is the first intelligent thing you have written to the jam.

    >All of those MP3 and Real Audio files weren't far from the truth. The >sound SUCKS on this album! Can hardly hear the snare in some places.

Yeah a loud crashing snare in Anna Lee would have really fitted in brilliantly.

    >It has no brightness or airy-ness at all. It should be somewhere between this sound and >the ACOS coffee-can sound and it would be perfect. >Vocals get "blurry" in many places. Either too many effects or not enough. Hard to >understand the lyrics in many places. I guess guitar/bass/keys sound decent for the most >part but the drums and vox blow. Less treble then WDADU - I didn't think that was >possible! I usually have the treble set at 0 or 1 on my stereo in truck and that works >just find but I had the treble cranked and it still sounded like I had cotton balls >shoved in my ears. I think it sounds worse than QR's HitNF.

Once again I say get a decent system, it sounded damned good on my Marantz system, thirty year old speakers an all.

    >Lets hope the music grows on me. I'm gonna give it time.

Don't bother, your probably the kind of guy who complains about winning a new car and not being the right colour.

Steve Z and I were sitting there in the parking lot at Tower Records, listening to it and we saw a bunch of cop cars and fire trucks ride buy. I said it was probably a mass-suicide at a DT listening party. hehe

Nah they were coming to take you back to your padded cell.

    >Also, DOUG PINICK (sp?) - DIE DIE DIE!!!! What a mistake THAT was. Ugh!

Well this is where you totally blow my respect and any credability that you ever had. Doug's vocals are awesome and make the song even better.

    >Welp, that's it for now. I can't wait to read the 87 ytsejams that >will be showing up in my box in the next 24 hours. :)

You've already proved to us all that you don't acually read any jams.
