Yup! I was listening to Aftertaste, cuz it's been in my car for a while, and I was thinking, "this snare sound just RIPS! it's the best I've ever heard". And then FII came out, and I was very pleased with the drum sound of course :-)

Yes... I even talked with Cassiano about this when we were going to the Dream Theater show here in Brazil and he said that it's just because both melodies share the same tone (I don't know if this makes sense in English)... (well, I still only have a tape with 7 songs from the new album, and I won't buy the album until Wednesday because I wouldn't study otherwise :-) ).

Hmm, did you read the "Screw...of it" part? I'm sick of people agruing the fact that they can like FII. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. It's when someone says "they sold out. they suck." That pisses off people. And then the people who have not been fully reading the jams said "i have a right to not like this FII. but i do like FII." What's wrong with you people? READ THE POST, THEN REPLY!!!

I picked up Savatage's new album yesterday. It's (once again) a great album!!!
There are two things I wanted to share with you. 1) At the liner (Special thanks) only two bands are mentioned. Dream Theater and Trans Siberian Orchestra. DT, cool! Does anyone know why guys from Savatage thank DT?
2) It seems that misters Oliva & O'Neill like rap. Listen to "Paragon Innocence". Chorus is just like chorus from Bobby Brown's "Humpin' Around" :)

The Jazz Mandolin Project played a free concert the Student Union here at UMCP last night, and I had the fortune of catching the show. One word: fabulous. These guys were tight, energetic (actually seemed to *want* to play a concert!), and friendly with the audience - one of the best bands I've ever seen live, even if they only played for less than 90 minutes (some dumbass pulled the fire alarm and the building had to be evacuated).
What do they sound like? The band consists of an extremely dextrous electric mandolinist (played melodies and countermelodies with separate fingers at the same time), a bassist with a huge effects rig (at one point, he grinned and did a high-pitched wanky distortion guitar solo, other times he did orchestral effects and such), and a kick-ass drummer who did more with a small kit than a lot of big-kit drummers. Any fans of the Flecktones I know would love these guys.
I bought their self-titled album, and the bassist's (Stacy Starkweather) solo CD, "Every November". Good stuff, but more laid back than they were live. Stacy's CD is more straight-ahead jazz with a horn section.
They've got a website (with sound clips even) if'n anybody's interested...
And that's it for my review. Happy now?!

I was just reading on a jam from the 23rd, (I'm generally a few days behind, because I'm special!) that someone thought TAMP sounded a little like U2? I thought that was interesteing, although I didn't notice that, because *I* thought New Millenium, especially the chorus, sounded like U2 on talent steroids. Anyone else?

Speaking of JLMB, someone mentioned earlier about the dueling guitar solo that you can only hear with headphones. I was wondering if this was not a give and take with the keyboard and guitar, only the keyboard has that guitar sound to it. Anyone, know? I'm not a musician (I only write lyrics and music in my head that'll probably never see the light of day), but this solo seems pretty impressive if it is battling keyboards and guitar.
And please, someone e-mail me about the following: Where are Metal Edge magaizines sold (i.e. chain store that carry it)? I can't find one. Since I live in the US, where should I send about the fan club, the NY address or the one in England printed in FII? And do I need to include a SASE? And is Where Are You Now on the net somewhere? Where is it?
And I do like all of the new album, but not because I have to. I just do. I cannot pigeonhole a song as to why I like it or not no matter who it is by. Music in in the ear of the beholder. There is no possible way DT could release an album that completely satisfies all of their fans. There's just too many of us. And the guys in DT are only human. So they have to make the music that they are proud of. The way some people are digging into it takes out some of the fun and enjoyment in actually listening to it (at least, for me). But it has been bringing in some interesting jam content (which is good). That's what we're here for. Except the cussing people out posts. Those are just there for humor ;)

Hey people!!! I just want to add some comments about some songs in the CD. Here they go:
1) Trial of Tears reminds a lot of a Rush song, but it wasn't the beggining of the song that struck me as sounding similar to Rush (although it kinda does sound like Xanadu), it was the part that starts at 3:08 when James starts singing "I may have wasted all those years...". This just sounds to me like something off a Rush album. There's a few other things that make this song sound similar to a Rush song, but this is all I'm gonna say about this.
2) To the person that said NM is mostly in 4/4, you're going to have to listen more carefully. The way I would describe the time signatures in this song (please bear along with this somewhat non-musically trained person's explanation) is a playing around with 4/4 and 3/4 in a similar way to what is done somewhere in Learning to Live (forgot which part). I can hear many parts in this song where there's three measures of 4/4 and one of 3/4, and this then repeats itself. There's also a 6/4 (or is it 3/4?) part in the song, along with, of course, some obvious 4/4 parts.
3) Where does James hit the highest note on the disc? I think it's in NM, around the end of the song, in one of the backing voices. Boy it sounds high! Anyone know what note it is? I wonder how long it took him to be able to hit that note right in the studio!
4) I think You Not Me is actually pretty cool. It's weird to read almost everybody saying that they don't like this song much. I can't find what's wrong with it. By the way, the extra time in the song (comparing to the MP3) is definitely in the extended outro (my fave part of the song).
5) I think that what makes Peruvian Skies so good is the emotional buildup throughout the song. It seems to happen so naturally as the song progresses. It just flows so well for me. It sounds incredibly well written. That's something about the songs in this disc that I like. Many of the changes just flow so well. The abrupt changes in some other DT songs in previous albums don't bother me at all (I actually like them a lot), but I think it's a plus when the changes in a song happen naturally. What i mean is that it's nice to hear a song just flowing through instead of sounding like different tidbits tied around together to form one song. Please don't get me wrong here. I'm not bashing on DT songs that have abrupt changes. I love these songs as well. I just think that it reflects better songwriting when the changes inside a song just happen and do not seem somewhat forced.
6) I just want to quickly say that I love this CD. It rules. I guess a CD must be VERY GOOD when you're out at a pub with a chick and you kinda feel like listening to the CD at that moment instead of being there. By the way, do not use this last comment to make any judgements about me, since i know that sounds like something that maybe a total loser would experience (to the people to whom this happens frequently, don't take this as me thinking that you're total losers or anything). I am not ashamed at all of that happening, by the way :-)
7) One question, could somebody define to me what grunge is and what it sounds like? Don't think I've never heard grunge (trust me, I have listened to plenty of it), I just don't know how to identify it.
