That is the pimp-daddy supreme of all DiMeola albums, complete with
the disco tropical casino king on the cover. This album is what
shred used to be, and should be again.

FOTOFLAME! Hehehe I HATE THAT! That's exactly the same thing as
having a poster of Cindy Crawford on your ceiling instead of a real
    girlfriend. :)

I suppose, to an extent, but what I'm really talking about here is
his methods and his playing structure. It's easier to understand,
from the perspective of someone who is going to try and play this
stuff, a more basic rendition of a tune, than one where you're
expected to know the tune in order to truly follow along.
Technically, yes, you understand how to copy his techniques better
than you know how to emulate a horn's techniques, but from a playing
perspective, you can't tell me (and I know you didn't say it... I'm
just making a point here) it would be easier to learn to emulate
Stern's phrasing and approach than it is to emulate Miles Davis.
Stern knows too much, and thus, he does a lot more.

    > Following all the changes isn't something that's necessary to enjoy
    > jazz music.

I certainly think it is. I mean, it ties the piece together...
especially during solos where chordal accompaniment drops out... it's
important to know where it's going. You don't have to be a musician
to do this... I'm talking about being able to just hear where a song
is going (the way you can hear, knowing the song, where Take the Time
is going, and sing the guitar lines even though you may have no idea
    about how it's done).

    > I agree, but I still see some fault with your logic. Jazz has just
    > as many subgenres as any other type of music. Fusion is just one of
    > those. You claim you have to start at the basics. But where is that?

Yeah. I know... this is a dilemna that I'm having trouble
addressing (and saw it even as I wrote the post)... what I'm trying
to get across, is that _I_ bought all the fusion stuff, and _I_
started learning all that stuff, thinking I was learning jazz, and
    _I_ got a rude awakening.
I'm trying to say that it's important to get traditional
instrumental (or even vocal) renditions of songs, if you want to
learn to really play jazz. Even if you just want to play rock, it is
STILL the best thing you can do for your playing. A traditional
version of any standard, would usually have some instrument that can
play chords, at least one that plays melodies, a bass instrument
(could be the same one that's playing chords) and usually a
percussion element. The version should stick to the progression, and
not deviate (reharmonize, or radically alter) from the original song.
I'm not saying that this is what you should have to listen to... I'm
saying that this is the obvious place to start when learning jazz,
because you hear everything, and can hopefully understand everything.
You can hardly hear how Tribal Tech's "Stella by Starlight" sounds
like the original... if that's your point of origin, your version of
    Stella will probably be F.U.B.A.R.

    > "Useful"? Learning any artists music is as useful as you make it to
    > be.

That's sort of taking that in a whole different direction than my
post. You can't make learning most Mahavishnu Orchestra solos or
most DiMeola solos very useful when playing jazz. You'll miss the
groove and the feel altogether, even if you can summon them up
quickly enough to use them over changes.

    > I'm not too familiar with DiMeola, but I know McLaughlin has
    > played over and written some pretty wacked out changes in his years.
    > Also, many standards have fairly simple progressions....

Many do, yes. But you have to improv over them and still swing,
without sounding too scalar. I don't think DiMeola does a great job
of staying away from sounding scalar... that's part of why he doesn't
sound jazzy to me. McLaughlin can pull this off, but he can't
swing... listen to his album of standards, and then toss in some Wes
Montgomery... which one would people more readily identify as jazz?
McLaughlin just doesn't have the feel for that kind of stuff, and I
really believe that's a significant element to just "skip." For an
artist, it's widely accepted that you should learn the basics, and be
able to reproduce form, shape, and dynamics before you branch off to
impressionist or abstract works. I feel the same way about jazz...
but that's just MY opinion, and MY advice... not necessarily the "way
    it must be."

Could this dude be any cooler? Maybe I spoke too soon... maybe
he'll make the next post say "E-mail Mike Bahr, and he'll sell you a
copy." but I think that just rules.

    > I disagree actually. Have you played a JPM series?

Yup. Used to work at Guitar Center. Played the first ones in the
store (and GC gets em before anyone else) and have played several of
them over the past couple years.

    > I agree the price is probably too high but as far as a direct comparison
    > to the RG570 I desagree.

Why? Same wood. Same or better trem. IMO, better neck (I don't
like the thinner JPM neck... I was raised on a Maple RG550 neck. :).
Both are going to have the Ibanez rollercoaster-neck syndrome. The
difference is the pretty colors and the pickups, neither of which
matter to me, because I am a Duncan (and possibly now an EMG) user,
and would throw those thin little DiMarzios in the trash. But that's
not even the main issue; look at the cost differences... over a
grand for a JPM, under $500 for an RG. Under $400 for a used RG,
which, IMO if gotten from the right era, destroys both the new RG and
the new JPM. There is no way that the price difference is validated,
except for the fact that you're paying tribute to your guitar hero...
which is fine, but since I've got too damn many guitar heros, that's
not something I wanna do (unless it was the Jason Becker guitar that
was donated to Hard Rock... I'd give my left nad for that)

    > those and they don't play or sound very similar. To start with the feel
    > of the neck (and action) on the JPM is far superior.

There is no reason the action on one guitar should be better than
the other. They're pretty similar, with regards to the bridge and
nut. Have your RG set up right.

    > and it is very quiet in comparison...my RG makes some awful hum.

This is a problem with your RG. Have that fixed. It's not normal.

            Patitucci is DA MAN!

That's kind of awkward, seeing as Mike Varney is the Mike Varney of
Magna Carta, just as he was and is the Mike Varney of Shrapnel. :)

    > 1983 - Alcatrazz/No Parole - Yngwie wrote most of the music. Great

No one escapes Varney-control. :) Especially in the 80's.

I don't think it's fair to say this. Joe WAS doing it when Yngwie
came out. And I really don't hear an influence. It would be
interesting to see if Joe considered Yngwie even a slight influence.

    > And of course there are probably a lot of others, but this is enough
    > typing for me (when did Vai's Flexible come out?)...

I sort of missed the point of this post, but I'm sure it's because I
can't read. Have you considered that Yngwie stole a great many of
his licks from DiMeola and Uli Jon Roth and Eddie Van Halen(who were
well established guitar gods in the mid-late 70's)? I believe he
even listed those in his Mike Varney Spotlight column, which was
before he was a crack whore and a dickhead. During his crack whore
phase he denied claiming those were influences, even though it's in
    print.

Cool posters have been going up around town advertising the forthcoming
DT gig, and I am determined to have one for my bedroom wall. Black background,
luminous green foreground with one of the banner images from the rsabbs.com
    website magnified about a thousand times . . . very cool. :-)

What's the best way of stealing a poster which has been pasted on to a brick

There, that wasn't so hard, was it?

LTE arrived today, too. Had to listen to my newly arrived Virtual XI first, though. Both very, very good. Worth the wait, although I'd heard most of Maiden's album already (damn Internet).

Got Big Wreck's "The Oaf (My Luck is Wasted)" single yesterday, just to see what they sound like. Quite good. Better than 95% of the crap out there at the moment.

    > We will ALWAYS play our own headlining shows, but we don't want to ever limit > ourselves to only one type of environment for the rest of our career...

Exactly. When DT does shows at places like the Jaxx or any of the other places they've been playing at, they are pretty much preaching to the converted. While I don't doubt that DT makes some new fans at these types of shows (I brought my ex-girlfriend to one and she bought FII the day it came out with no prompting from me), the majority of the people at these shows are already fans. By securing a support slot they can now expose thousands of people every night to their music who may have either never heard of DT or who have heard of them but didn't know that they kick ass as much as they do. Either way, it's a win-win situation. Besides, support slots can actually do a lot of band morale, not that DT is in trouble in that area. It gives you something to prove every night. It makes you hungry. That's a good thing. I'll go see DT in any environment.

December 4th and 5th, 1994. First at the Buena Vista Theater in Tucson (a shithole if I ever saw one, but it's where I first met the band!!) and then at Club Rio in Tempe (woefully short on capacity... packed beyond discomfort! A big change from when it barely got half full during two Images tour shows a year earlier). BTW, I *did* run tape at both, and the tapes came out just fine, though I confess I never did anything further with those recordings (mainly because the Awake tour is VERY well represented by Kick Into a Dream and the Mind Control/Urawa PPV video)... any interest? Standard Awake tour setlist, both. The Tucson tape is clearer because attendance was significantly lower, and thus less obnoxious clapping and noise.

I imagine if DT played both Phoenix and Tucson again, the attendees for both shows would be nearly identical. :) We've become a close-knit group, truly.

DT was supposed to play at the Electric Ballsack last winter, but then the Ballroom lost their liquor license and became a sick joke of a concert venue, so DT changed it to Bash on Ash. Bash couldn't get their shit together in some way or another, and the band wound up skipping AZ altogether, citing 98-KUPD's lack of support as the final nail in the coffin.

    > First of all I apologize for the Rockies spoiling the Diamond Backs opening > day, 9 to 1 . Well not really, Go Rockies...... :)

Well, shee-it, we're talking about an expansion team playing the world series champs. The outcome was predictable. Thankfully, we at least have someone to root for now... it fills a bigger void in the minds of most Arizonans that many people realize. Win or lose, I'm happy the D-backs are here.

Not only them, but the singer guy from Dixie Dregs was there too! Actual prog-ness on local TV!! Can you believe it?!

Yeh, it was rather kick-ass. I was watchin' the opening ceremonies on TV (much like many of us who can't afford a $50 parking lot fee and $300 ticket) and although the local station's coverage of the event was BEYOND shitty, their appearance was truly awesome. The cameras cut to Alice Cooper's smiling face (Oh, cool!) then it zoomed out and there was Dave Mustaine, Rob Halford, the two dudes from the Dreggs (Damn, doesn't anybody know a Dreg's name besides Steve Morse? No, Morse wasn't one of them) and some other local pop artists, and they broke into a mariachi-meets-industrial-meets-Alf version of the National Anthem.

Okay, so the Rockies came in and won the game...

..BUT THEY DON'T HAVE A RETRACTABLE ROOF BABY! BWAHAHAHAHA!

~Eckie thinks Portnoy and the boys should bring the show to BOB
