I would strongly recommend picking up Trick of the Tale and Seconds Out.
Twop of the best Phil Collins era genesis albums, and guess what? TT is
progressive as hell. Wind and Wuthering is good as well, but I would
recommend TT and SO.

Yes, I have checked out these groups.
Stratovarius I like alot (I have Visions) I have Angra's Angels Cry, and I like it for the most part, but it annoys the Hell out of me when Matos does those girly-voice parts (I like his voice 90% of the time though) Symphony X's The Divine Wings of Tragedy just totally kicks ass.
But my question is more like "how do we define power metal" (as opposed to say heavy metal)?
I always think of "metal" as being stuff that has really heavy (head-bangin') relentless driving riffs. Symphony X certainly comes to mind, as does older Metallica for example.
So when we talk about "power metal", are we saying "metal", with the addition of...............something? To me, that added thing is a progressive influence (to me Stratovarius in particular certainly is at least a little progressive) or in the case of Symphony X a heavy classical influence.
I realize that power metal and prog are different, but wouldn't everyone agree that power metal is prog influenced? (Isn't that why most of us like both?)
Aww hell..... now I'm really confused. :-)

I had to respond because that particular song may very well be my favorite song of this year and last year combined. I got used to listening to it all the time when I was downstate last summer and christmas, but up here in the north country they never play it. It really riles you up! And it's pretty funny too.
The only connection I can think of stylistically would be the drum beat, which is kinda similar i guess. The drum intro for jlmb is sort of like the backround drums in AEnema. other then that, I never noticed a real strong similarity between the two. Subject-wise, they are very similar. Both about being basically fed up. Interesting concept.
I think that will be my next album purchase. I need that song!

He used to be the hot guitar teacher in DC about 7 years ago, I don't know what he has been up to since. I have his first CD and wasn't impressed. My guitar teacher at the time was a student of his and I thought my teachers songs were much better. As far as I know, it is, and Jaxx might have them on the 4th. BTW, to whoever said they heard Daytona's was pretty cool, it isn't. The sound there sucks the left one - for the bands AND the fans. (having been in both positions...)
I really hope that Jaxx gets the show they want - it's a far superior place to see a band like DT. Or any band, for that matter...

Now that my seminar is done (14th), I rewarded myself with some new CDs last night. And MAN! Do they kick ass or what??!!
I picked up Savatage's "Wake of Magellan", which I think is awesome after just 1 listen. Also, I picked up 2 jazz CDs: Chick Corea Electric Band's "Beneath the Mask" and the Dave Weckl Band's new release "Rhythm of the Soul".
All 3 of these CDs are incredible, and I've listened to them each only once. I love Dave Weckl as a jazz drummer --> he can prob. blow away many rock drummers that I like. Beneath the Mask is my second favorite Chick Corea CD to Eye of the Beholder.

It isnt the new people that tick me off. It's the new people that come in and after reading five jams think they have the system licked that get my panties in a bunch. There is more to this list than a bunch of loonies posting over and over about the same shit. There is a community here. I never felt it before, but it is there if you will let yourself feel it. And it takes longer than 3 posts. Try three years. When I see someone come in here, stay for a week or two, flame away and then bail, I feel sorry for them because I think they have missed out on something special.
So I challenge all the people that are sitting back and thinking "My god, these are the biggest Dream Theater fans in the world? I dont want to associate myself with them" to give this list a chance (if you can handle the 10 jams a day! : ). You will be infinitely surprised at the people that turn up, the experiences you will go through because of the list, and the knowledge you will attain. Its not every day that you get 1500 people sitting in a large room talking about almost the same thing.

I agree with you on this. I am the one who do not like Spock's Beard after listening to The Light and Beware of Darkness. The reason is I feel that Spock's sounds too much like Yes (especially the bass part) with metal influence. And I think Neal's singing is a bit annoying in some tracks. Some of their long songs do not have a reason to be that long.
But this is just my opinion.

I just had to add to the Pink Floyd thread. I have recently gotten into them a great deal. My fave album is the Wall (album that got me into Pink Floyd). Then I would have to say Dark Side Of The Moon, followed by Animals (very good album), Wish You Were Here, and Meddle.
On a related note, fans of Pink Floyd should check out Porcupine Tree. They a UK band with definite Pink Floyd influences, yet original. I like to think of them as a Pink Floyd of the 90's.
OK, on to the tabs. I was looking for drum tabs in general on the net, and lo and behold the first site I find (amazingly!) has Dream Theater tabs! Anyway, check em out for yourselves here: http://meded.med.uci.edu/~nprakash/trans.html
