Dear everyone... Thank you all for sending me the reason why DT cancelled the Nottingham gig last Tuesday and, yes, I *did* post before checking the backlog of 180 or so 'Jams and , yes, I *did* title it "Disgusted at DT" although some of you seem to have misinterpreted it. Despite the title I wasn't disgusted at DT personally, especially since they had a valid reason, and I'm glad Mike tried to get the go ahead for the instrumental set. I do, however, distinctly remember saying I was "annoyed with DT, or Rock City, or whoever was responsible" and not the band members of DT directly *unless* it was cancelled for some stupid reason (not illnesses/family bereavements/extremely bad weather etc etc...) but since there seemed to be a valid reason I don't see why you got so stressed at me! I know it's all in the past and it happened the way it happened but it *was* going to be my very first time seeing DT and I'm sure you (all of you who have been fortunate enough to see DT live) were all just as excited as I was last Tuesday the very first time you saw them play. Fell free to flame me or whatever...it's not like I know the band members as personal friends or anything AND I'm still a gigantic fan of their music anyway. I don't see that bit changing in the foreseeable future.

    Chris Parnham

P.S. Mike, if you want to "flame my ass" personally as someone suggested then please do so. I'm sure I'd be honoured even though most would agree I'm not worthy of a personal e-mail from you! If anyone else decides to do so and I see a few names I've never seen before then I'll probably just delete them without reading them. Ha!

P.P.S. Glen Brooks, don't get too excited about your first ever DT gig - it may not ever happen just yet! (Hmmm, sound familiar, anyone?)

    > I am very disappointed about the news I heard. I can't stand > the sight of another good band biting the dust.

yeah, but with FNM it was imminent...

    > Does anyone know why this happened?

well, they've always been going different directions. i mean, i can't even count on both hands how many side projects that the members of FNM have been involved in. part of what made FNM so awesome in my mind was the fact that every member wanted to do something different, that when they came together it was so great.

i read in a recent (AoTY) interview, and roddy said that when they got together it was constant pulling in one way or another. i guess part of that tension made FNM great, and part of that tension made it obvious that they wouldn't be around/together forever. 15 years is a good string as a band...and i guess that's 10 or 11 years with mike patton...

hell, i'm glad they put AoTY out...i thought they broke up after KFAD...

    > What are the band member's plans?

patton is still in mr. bungle, plus he's got another side band... i forget the name. it's got the bassist from mr.bungle, plus the guitarist from the melvins, plus drummer dave lombardo from slayer/grip inc. (and most recently played drums on the forth- coming testament album)...

roddy is in another band called imperial teen. i don't know what billy's doing, but i'm sure something. and puffy will probably land a gig soon...he got that kick-ass gig playing drums for ozzy's band and black sabbath last year at ozzfest '97...

    > Shit!!

yeah, i suppose they'll be doing that too... "you can't kill it!!" ..take it from our drummer "puff"- being good, it gets you stuff!

Man, this sucks. Why don't they do any of this shit up here in MA? Instead= we get clinics by people like that freak from Smashing Pumpkins, and Bob= Weir, and drummers galore. But NO, do we get Dave LaRue? Of COURSE not.

    Sorry. I'm venting.

As far as JLMB sounding line AEnima: I can sort of hear a comparison, but= only when I stretch my imagination pretty far. I mean, the songs have some= similarities, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that they sound a lot= alike. Not that I'm knocking Tool; apart from DT, they're one of the best= bands out there. I just don't see the comparison between the two songs= unless I try really hard. :)

I got two CD's last night: 'School of Fish', by School of Fish, and= 'Visions' by Stratovarius (The ONLY copy at Newbury Comics! I'd looked= there a dozen times for this album and couldn't find it, and then took a= look on a whim last night in the 'Random S CDs' section, only to see it= staring me in the face - for $13!!!). SoF is a great poppy, late 80's band= that did the song '3 Strange Days' - they're fun. If you're into late 80's= pop (not metal) then check them out. Stratovarius is just friggin' unreal.= I'm so impressed with their rhythm section - to stay that tight at that= speed is impressive. Great album. Now all I have to do is find some Haji's= Kitchen, Angra, Opeth, Ron Thal, and Symphony X somewhere north of Boston= and I'll be all set!

    Hi everybody!

I had a great weekend in France where I attended the DT/Angra/Vanden Plas show at the Bourges festival and the special Angra kind-of-Ronnie-Scott's-show in Paris. Not only the shows were great but what made the weekend really special was to meet internet friends from all around the world: USA, England, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan, Russia (did I forget anybody ?) !! Hi to all of you, I'm sure we will meet again somewhere some time! :-) There were three buses going to Bourges from Paris, two for fans and one for the press. The bus ride was nice except for the fact that Mark Metzger didn't bring enough wine. :-) Completely by chance I got to know fellow 'jammer Jacob (Volodya) from Open All Night Records (Great CD! More about this in a separate post!). There were also two members of Superior in our bus, hi Bernd! :-) I'm really looking forward to the new album!! About the show in Bourges I don't have much more to say than that three of my favourite bands played and all blew me away. Jacob already posted the setlists, so you know that Angra played a new song (I can't wait for the album!!) and that DT's setlist was quite special, for the first time in Europe they played "Speak To Me"! James LaBrie's voice seemed okay again, I mean I already saw better but also worse performances of him. Mike Portnoy sang the first verse of "Take The Time", just until James came in with "I think it's time for a chaaaaaange".... :-) Oh, and if you get a bootleg of this show (which isn't impossible if you keep on reading the 'jam) and hear a guy screaming "Bafu!" during the intro, that would be fellow 'jammer Mark Metzger. On the way back to Paris the bus in which Angra and Vanden Plas were travelling had a breakdown and since there was no other possibility for them, our bus (one of the fan buses, that is) had to return half the way to Bourges and pick up the bands and roadies. Great, you may say, travelling in a bus with Angra and Vanden Plas... but it was around 4 or 5 in the morning and everybody, bands and fans, was just completely exhausted and tired and trying to get a little bit of sleep. Finally we arrived in Paris at 9 in the morning. Later that day at Angra's special show Vanden Plas' singer Andy Kuntz announced "Wait For Sleep" as "Get No Sleep" with reference to that night... Okay, on to Angra's special show: It was fun!! Again, Jacob already posted the setlist. It's difficult to name the highlights of this evening, but what I really enjoyed were Vanden Plas' plugged version of "Des Hauts, Des Bas" and Superior's "Why", played just with a guitar and two singers by Bernd Basmer, Michael Tangermann (Superior) and Andre Matos (Angra). And I learned something else that night: Don't let an american company's vice-president drink too much european beer, even if he also buys one for you each time. Mind the consequences! ;-) (Ok Mark, I'm just kidding, thanks for the beer!)

Summary: I travelled a long way, spent much money, saw two great shows and met a lot of nice people. It was well worth it!!! See you next time!

Hello. Time for my yearly (or something) post. Won't take long...

    Power metal:

I just love all these categories of music. Some might say they are useless as in music every band/artist/group/whatever usually try to make their own kind of music (well, some of them anyway) and every single person has their own idea of them. So there are no clear-cut lines and things get a bit fuzzy on the edges. But it's fun to delve into those once in a while. This is my take:

I think that power metal is composed of three main elements: Melodic, speed (ic =) and symphonic. I think it might have once been called melodic speed metal, before speed broke all the state limits (hahahaaahaa.. hah.... yeah, a joke =P). I think the name comes from what emerges when all these are used. Energetic drumming, rhythms. Melodic leads. Symphonic.... stuff. And what it all amounts to is powerful music. One big concentration of this is German metal (due to certain band/or even bands). I've also heard one dainty stigma called 'True' metal, but I seem to remember it was also used for prog metal on one accasion too. So that's my take. I'm just happy that in the 90's I don't have to listen to only 'metal'. Now it's prog and power metal ;)

    Graham:

Referring to his reply to the dude that broke his quitar: Another thing that I love is the way Graham just 'goes off' once in awhile. It seems almost periodical... makes you ponder... Okay, what was it this time? Someone peed on your cereal? Again ?!? I read the post twice and still couldn't find a smiley, so I guess you didn't remember to switch your 'sarcasm' flameproof on =P. Anyways, on ytsejam, sarcasm's no fucking guarantee!!!

    =) <- Caaan't flaaame meee!

So, once again no real information. Some lame personal views and one pitiful flame attempt. See you next year. I'll shut up now.

    >Does anyone have this album?

Yes! It's a great album. I'd call it standard fusion instrumental stuff, with mindblowing chops and cool funky grooves. I heard a rumor that, after or during his brief stint in Poison, Kotzen made a comment about how he had "lost all his chops" or something.. Listen to this disc to hear how utterly ludicrous that self-effacing comment was (if it's true)..

If you like this stuff check out Kotzen's "Electric Joy" for a slightly less fusiony, but equally cool, instrumental guitar album. Also, his work with Greg Howe (can't remember the title of their latest) is worth getting..
