This comes from Tony Levin's homepgae:

"An unusual request: Last Saturday night, at the Knitting
Factory in NYC, the second show started with a band improv
that went GREAT. Sometimes things just click like that, and
it comes out like a finished piece. After the show, I ran to
Robert, our sound mixer, to assure that the ADAT's had been
working. They hadn't! Neither had the DAT player. In other
words, we not only have no good recording of the piece, we
don't even have a tape to remind us how it went! We tried
the same thing on Sunday, at the Boston House of Blues --
completely different. So... to get to the point, my
practical nature tells me that SOMEONE in the audience MUST
have taped that performance. And I'd like to ask if, as a
favor, anyone who has a tape of that first piece in the
second set could mail us a copy of it, so we can learn the
piece for our next album. Address: Papabear Records, PO Box
    498, Woodstock, NY 12498. thanks."

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Jonathan A.: Thanks a lot for the "ytse-boot camp" post. I sprayed Coke all
over my monitor while reading it. You'd think I'd have learned not to drink
while reading the 'jam...with Eckie, Bafu, and KorgX3 out there, no one is
    safe. :)

    Matt J. remarked:
    >I don't believe I've seen Dirty Water Scott post before...
    >..interesting first post.

Scott Cook has been around for quite some time. It would, of course, be
easier to identify him if he didn't have that habit of changing the "From"
line in his mailer every week or so. AKA "Dill Dough", "The Emperor of
Earth", and "Phil Atio", as I recall....

Jay O. gave us some reviews:
    >Glass Hammer - Perelandra (***)

Glass Hammer! Cool, I can get into this. Too few stars though. :)

    > The second GH CD I've bought; I also have "Journey of the Dunadan."
    >Both albums are music-plus-non-musical-interlude type concept albums.
    >The first was based on Tolkein's works; this one doesn't mention any
    >source in the liner notes, but I thought it was based on something by
    >C.S. Lewis. Anyway...

It's based loosely on the "fairy tales for adults" series by Lewis (the
second book in the trilogy is named "Perelandra", but most of the story and
concept comes from the band themselves.

    > Sound-wise, they've improved as well; bringing in a few more

    >less-meandering compositions. Sound-wise, they're about 1/3 Floyd,
    >1/3 Fates Warning - APSOG, and 1/3 Arena. Mostly electronic/keyboardy
    >sounds, and lots of harmonic-type vocals.

Actually, GH has had pretty much the same lineup for some time, at least
live. Fred Schendel and Steve DeArqe/Babb are the two main musicians and
vocalists, like you said, but David Carter (guitars) and Walter Moore
(drums, backing vocals) solidify the live lineup. Carter only played on one
or two tracks on "JOTD" but is all over "Perelandra" and so is Moore.

The most recent release "On To Evermore" showcases all four of them, each
of them playing a mind-numbing number of instruments, and Moore even
handling lead vocals for the first time on some songs.

If you liked "Perelandra" and "JOTD", then you'll want to pick up "Live and
Revived", a disc showcasing studio rehearsal recordings and several tracks
which were written for the "lost album" between "JOTD" and "Perelandra".
(It was never recorded). Then get "On To Evermore", which continues the
story that was begun in "Perelandra". Even better sound and amazing songs.
    Glass Hammer rules!

    >Iced Earth - Days of Purgatory (***1/2)
    >There's also a blurb in the
    >liner notes about a "reworked Dante's Inferno" from Burnt Offerings;
    >but nothing from Offerings is on this disc. Is there a second disc
    >to this that's sold separately?

"Days of Purgatory" was released in two versions, one which was released in
Europe with two discs and one single-disc version for U.S. distribution.
See http://www.icedearth.com/ for tracklistings for the discs; with 11
songs on the first and 10 on the second, it's too long to stick here.

    Greetings, O ye Jammer-faithful...

I picked up my copy of this fine publication yesterday at the Sam Ash music
store on Route 4 in Paramus, NJ. It contains an excellent interview with John
Petrucci, John Myung (who, typically, doesn't actually say a whole lot) and
Mike Portnoy, as well as a TON of prog-rock and fusion album reviews and
several other goodies. Happily, they offer subscriptions, and not only am I
planning to subscribe haste poste haste, I'm going to try and see if they
can't use another writer. Wish me luck, eh? :^)

I also picked up an unbelievable concert video yesterday as well: Niacin,
featuring John Novello on Hammond organ and synthesizer, the one and only
Billy Sheehan on bass and Dennis Chambers on drums, captured live at the Blue
Note in Tokyo. This is kick-ass fusion of the highest order. Highly
    recommended.

Well, it's incredible to see the mix between the choirs and the
heavy metal parts. IMO, much better (and original, must I add) than most
of the stuff released by a lot of the bands today. In fact, the choirs
grabbed my attention so hard that the first time I listened to this album
I didn't even realize that it was heavy metal. Only after my 2nd or 3rd
listens was that I paid attention to the distorted guitars.

A real pitty that these so creative musicians (and there are many
musicians this creative in the Underground) have to pass thru hard times
(if you know about the recordings of this album, you know what I'm talking
    about).

For instance, Opeth has sold only 10,000 copies of "Morningrise"
(and this is the 2nd best selling act of Century Media, with Emperor's
not-so-new album having sold 30,000 copies). I wonder how many minutes
took for Metallica's "Reload" to sell 10,000 copies.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a fan of Metallica's work (well, not
that much of a fan of the latest material but still a fan overall), but
Opeth, Emperor, Therion and many, many other bands out there are, at
least, as creative as Metallica. The thing with Metallica is, IMO, that
they were the right band at the right time at the right place (in my point
of view, "The Black Album" was released at the right time, with the right
mix of heavy and soft songs -- had it been released, say, 2 years after
1991, it wouldn't sell that much, I think).

BTW, returning to the discussion about "Theli", I love "To Mega
Therion" and "Cults of the Shadow(s)" as well as "The Siren of the Woods"
(yes, the minimalist/new-age/whatever you call it song on this album).

    >>Furthermore, "One I Want" can be thought of as "Big Fat Money" part II. > >Really, I think Ballot or the Bullet is more Big Fat Money-ish then One I want, >but I'm not very good on comparisons. I meant lyrically; my point was that "serious" lyrics didn't start in Van Halen with Cherone. They're both humorous, "tounge-in-cheek" songs with a lot of repetitive lyrical motifs that have a serious theme behind the humor. Kind of like this: >Re: Bahr Wars, A New Beginning. Stop. Please. We give in. >No more anti-Bahr, anti-bootlegger, pro-Bahr, pro-bootleg, >pro-shot, probate, procreate, whatever. Nobody cares anymore. This looks like part of an early draft for "Big Fat Money." "Asshole" is a little strong. Unless, of course, you're talking about me. Also, you might want to reconsider some of the things you posted. I know you're not as abrasive and seemingly-paranoid as that, since I've dealt with you, but I'm guessing that most people here haven't. I owe you almost as much as I owe Mark Metzger, so I'll defend you here (though you probably don't want me to, since my support is worse than no support around here) like I have in similar forums, but even I was surprised by that outburst. Heh heh, it's almost here, May 20th. I got my Dream Theatre ticket (hey, I can't help it, I even told the lady who was at the counter and she defended the spelling, saying "It's the English spelling" but we all know that's wrong 'cuz it's the NAME OF THE BAND, but she don't know any better...she works as a sales clerk at Dillard's for Ged's sake) ANYWAYS, onto the juicy stuph:

ATTN: Anybody attending the May 20th Dream Theater concert at Club Rio,

So far we have three jammers confirmed for this, but I dunno if anybody's been swappin' emails behind my back >;) and it's more than that, but

We're gonna have a tailgate party at the parking lot of Club Rio (starting at around noon-ish) to hopefully greet the band when they get there, hang out before they do, and basically talk shit about people on this list. ;) It'll be a knee slappin' good time yall! I'll see if I can get a charcoal grill out there with some hamburger meat and hotdogs, Ed better bring his sound system in that nice SUV of his ;) we'll need some music to hang out to.

Actually, we had a great time at the first Fates Gig (or was it the second? I'm so confused) meeting eachother at Hooters and then raiding Guitar Center...not like the employees didn't mind seein' a bunch of people running around the store wearing a variety of Dream Theater shirts....

I know Ed, Vince, myself, and even...dare I mention his name, MIKE BAHR will be there ;) ready with stuff to get signed and to give to the band, even my banner(s) and hopefully some T-shirts, I dunno 'bout the t-shirts at this point tho 'cuz I'm an unemployed slacker currently enrolled full time at school, and having a few t's printed is gonna cost me cash I don't have right now. (remember, I need to save money for the shirts 'n shit they're gonna be sellin' there!)

Anyhoo, I'm bringing my guitar DEFINITELY, to get signed by the shred mongoid himself JP and DT's only fan who's crazier about them than I am, MP (yeah, so he's a drummer, I want my guitar signed by him dammit! He rules!), just wondering how the band is about signing instruments and what not, I dunno how to sneak a guitar into the club....without wearing a black t-shirt that says "Security" on the back....bwahahaha

We'll try to find a blonde for Derek before the show, a simple sacrifice for a simple wish from a bad ass keyboard player.

On to the second part of this note,

I know I'm not the only one on this list addicted to these cooler-than-cool net-friendly computer games, has anybody organized a Quake/Quake2/Starcraft tournament for the 'jammers of the world yet? I think that would, as so many of our Phx metalheads elegantly put it, "ROCK NADZ!" I'm trying to figure out how Quake2 skins are made (correctly) so I can get some kick ass stuff on the net...sure, being a Phx Coyote in Q2 rules, but I think it would kick ass more seeing a Mike Portnoy running around with a nuclear blaster!

Anyhoo, I'm not the most reliable person on the jam, but maybe organization of somethin' like this is just the exercise I need in uh...organizational skills. If anybody's interested in it, email me or sumthin' and I'll see what I can do. If anybody has experience in this kinda thing, PLEEEEEEASE help me out here :) I don't mean a tournament right now, it's finals real soon, so that's just stupid. Something to do during the summer....

Now I gotta go take care of these damn scrubs. Graham didn't give these bungholes a good 'nuff teaching in sarcasm, and they can't aim worth a ding dong on an acid trip. Give 'em time tho, by the time they're done, we're gonna have some great additions to the jam!

This is my first posting on the jam. I'm a swedish progger and I have been reading the jams for some time, and I like what I read, well most of it anyway but hey I can always scroll away.

I would say buy Script for a jesters tear first, IMHO it's still one of the best albums around. After that I would try to find the maxisingle of Market square heroes with the brilliant rendering of the Beowulf epic called Grendel. You should also be able to find that song on the B-sides themselfs album. Fugazi is also a very good album. Personally I don't think Marillion is as good without Fish and also that Fish is not as good without Marillion as they were together. But I prefer Fish over Marillion without Fish. Just listen to Shadowplay on the Fish album Internal exile. Not all songs on Fish albums are good but there are a lot of great songs, and his lyrics are really good.

    Enough ranting Martin
