This discussion about FII is confusing me a bit... I've been wondering =
if I should buy the CD or not, since I *love* I&W and Awake. I've seen =
so many people with so different opinions about FII and the discussion =
on this f-n list doesn't help me the least... But for all of you =
jammers, I've got a question: Which one should I buy first (I will buy =
them all - in time):
FII, Dark Side of the Moon (PF), Meddle (PF), WDADU, The Light (Spock's =
Beard) or Aquarium (Aqua)... Just kiddin' with that last one, OK?
And another thing:
I don't really know what to think about John Petrucci... I mean, he's an =
inevidable asset for the band DT, and he sure as hell got the *speed* =
and the *perfection*... but has he got the *feeling*? After listening to =
Satriani and Vai (The Masters!!!) I find some of Petrucci's play =
rather... pathetic... oh maybe that's not the word I'm seeking... excuse =
me, but Petrucci's play doesn't have the *sparkle* or the *move* that JS =
and SV have. Oh, what an UNFAIR comparison, you think...
When I first heard of JP there was a friend of mine having seen the LIT =
video, and he said that JP was the best he's ever seen... maybe he (and =
I) got it all wrong, so forgive me.

Actually, I'd like to turn this is a more on-topic direction and bring up a
point I made shortly after FII came out and see if it sticks this time. :)
The observation that I made was that most of the songs on FII contain
lyrics about water (the ocean, rain, rivers, tears, etc.). More than that,
most of these lyrics are metaphorical in that the water represents
something else (a cleansing influence, or a barrier to be crossed, for
example).
I don't think this represents an overall "theme", at least partially
because all the songs aren't connected in this way. It just struck me
during the early listens of the album. When I mentioned this the first
time, several people said to me "Well, the band is from LI, so they're
close to the water - of course they'd write about it a lot". Well, I only
live about 20 miles or so from the ocean, and while I may not write up to
the standards of DT, I can safely say that although the ocean *is* a part
of my *life*, it has never been a major component in my writing, so I'm not
sure I buy that argument.
And...to add my penny to the FII opinions thread - I'm part of the minority
that believe tha FII is by far DT's best and most coherent album yet,
although I must admit, I don't love every song on it.
My favorite DT instumental is Eve. It would take a major coup to displace
it. Hell, I played Eve at my *wedding*. :)
And my favorite mis-heard lyric on FII: "People that go though flesh" on
New Millenium (instead of "People so cold, ruthless") - followed closely by
"Strike up your best X-rated posture" on JLMB.
Let's keep this up everyone. Coherent, intelligent, on-topic content on the
Ytsejam - who would've thunk it?

Well, I hadn't gotten to part 4 or 5 or whatever before I made that last
post, so I guess I'll have to repsond here. That's what I get for not
catching up with the reading before posting. :)

Actually, I'm not sure that you can call such a catch-all thing as
"experience" a theme. Just about every (thoughtful) song that is written is
based on *someone's* experience, so you could use this same arguement for
just about any album.
But, to play devil's advocate, I'd like to suggest that rather than
Experience, this album is more about Emotion. even though the songs are
very diverse, each one seems to have it's own "emotional" signature, from
the anticipation on NM, to the anger of JLMB to the sadness of AL and the
roller-coaster in TAMP, to LITS, which seems to represent emotions and
feelings that don't even really have names.
I wrote a poem once called Voices (it predated Awake) in which the main
character internalized his emotions, and ended up with a different "voice"
in his head representing a different emotion. To me, this is what FII does
- each song is a representation a a different emotion, which in the end
probably paints a fairly accurate picture of the band's "state of mind"
leading up to the album's recording/release.

Well, to use an (probably bad) analogy, picture a man that's married to a
beautiful woman. After a few years, his mind starts to wander and he starts
having fantasies (or an affair) with what the rest of the world might
consider a very plain-looking woman. While we on the outside can't
understand what he's doing, the truth is that her looks are not the issue.
She is attractive to him because she is *different*.
I think the same can be true here. Just because JP is capable of doing more
doesn't mean that "stretching" his abilities can't lead to simpler music
rather than more complex.

well, probably neither. i mean both groups are
big into the beatles and queen. extreme tends to
go more along more VH influences, where i feel t
hat KX tends to be a chunky/funky/soulful mix of
the beatles, traditional gospel (you can hear it
in doug's vocals), and a bit of u2... i'm quite
positive that nuno and camp have heard of KX, and
vice versa. but both bands came out around the
same time, and i don't see one of them being a
major influence on the other at all.

like DT, is one of those bands who has a wide
range of musical works. i love so 'em much,
